ARMA 3 Editor - Simple unit respawn setup

  • Today I take a look at the BIS respawn function built into ARMA 3 and how to incorporate it into your missions. In the example I setup a mission containing three playable units, and three respawn locations which will be used to randomize the respawn location.
    Setup a multiplayer mission as desired and place down markers for the respawn locations you desire (placing more markers will increase randomization between them).
    Name the markers as respawn_west for western units, (or for other factions use respawn_east for eastern, respawn_guerrila for independent, respawn_civilian for civilian.)
    Inside your missions description.ext file include the chosen respawn type and respawn delay commands: (mission example below)
    respawn = "BASE";
    respawnDelay = 3;
    Save your mission and it will have respawn setup as dictated by the respawn type and time values as well as respawn locations that have been setup by the marker locations.

    Thank you so much :D at first I was pissed because it wasn't working then I realized I had not spelled my map name correctly or put it multiplayer maps. Then once I fixed it I realized it was my error. Thanks for the awesome and helpful video, keep up the amazing work.

    @Wak Slob - The description.ext file is a file that needs to be created manually, I do have a video detailing the use and creation of .ext files. Here is the link -

    For anyone having trouble with this and NOT getting a respawn option with only using the objective marker "respawn_west" and description.ext, after an hour of anger and frustration, I finally got it to work.
    Follow the directions for objective marker 'respawn_west' and editing the description.ext file with respawn = "base"; respawndelay 3; but ALSO place a module-> multiplayer -> respawn position and then sync that respawn position to any character you want respawning. I may be incorrect and this may vary with multiple players but this is the only reliable way I've gotten it to work. Happy respawning friends.

      Darko Namibia I can't think of any reason that would cause that issue. As you can see in this example I threw together - www.mediafire.com/download/5da1r6fgu6g1h8x/Respawn_Test_MP.VR.rar the respawn module is not needed. I'd be curious to know if the issue persists when trying that mission.

    Great video, but there is no file with the extension ".ext" in the mission root folder. Only a file called "missions.sqm" exists.

    How do you put the re-spawns INSIDE buildings, so you actually spawn inside not ontop..? I'm using the markers to re-spawn with. How do I change their altitude or just make them spawn players INSIDE the buildings instead of on the roof.. it's the most annoying thing I've ever seen.

    So you mention "team switching" for single player. I assume that's where your player is killed and then you're asked to pick another playable unit. Is there a way that you just automatically switch to someone in your group?

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bangingthebeldam Yes team-switching is BI's solution to respawn in single player, not the same but close enough I suppose. I don't know any way of overriding the default system of team-switching to other playable units in single player scenarios so to setup what you mentioned would require the entire group to be playable and you would still need to select one of them to switch into after being killed.

  • @Rookie7201

    There is the respawn module now. In your sector control video you showed yourself placing it down but everytime I try to use it, it doesn't work. I export it to multiplayer and start a new server on internet but it doesnt work.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rookie7201 There is a respawn module of sorts, it more or less acts as the marker position "respawn_west" (or whichever side it is configured for) the description.ext entries still need to be made. At the time of that video the module did work as intended, but yeah I've also noticed issues with it lately.
      As it simply acts as a respawn position it's usefulness can be debated, I still find myself just simply using markers.

      @pickinthatbanjo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AwareGamingNation You need to use respawn templates for that, the BI Wiki contains some info on that topic - community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3_Respawn#Respawn_Templates
      I have yet to do a full tutorial on working with respawn templates but I did do something with them using the Zeus system if I recall. I will dig that video up and link it shortly.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AwareGamingNation th-cam.com/video/wTViW9hli4U/w-d-xo.html Yeah if you disregard everything I say about the virtual arsenal in this video, you can see that the description.ext file has the respawn template added to it. And in the editor multiple respawn points were placed. This basically results in being able to pick spawn location based off of the respawn locations placed in the editor.
      I need to look further into respawn templates before doing a video that details them fully so for now that is about all I can say until I learn a bit more on the topic.

    I used the respawn module that is in the game now and it works but the AI seem to always spawn next to me and the game I am making will not work if this happens.I am hoping you can help me with this.I think they actually spawn where they die.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like a respawn type of instant is selected in the description.ext file, which would look like either;
      respawn = "2"; or respawn = "INSTANT";
      To change this, open up the description.ext file and change the line titled respawn to;
      respawn = "BASE"; or respawn = "3";

    • @66thoth
      @66thoth 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      respawn = "BASE";
      respawnDelay = 20;
      #include "VAS\menu.hpp"
      class CfgFunctions
      {
      #include "VAS\cfgfunctions.hpp"
      };
      That is my description.exe

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, the only other reason I can think of that would cause units to spawn where they shouldn't would be a missing respawn marker. Have you placed a marker titled "respawn_west" for bluefor, or "respawn_east" for oppfor?

    • @66thoth

    Hi I Like the video, but I am having issues if someone can help that would be great. I have created the text document ext and have added the required text into it. But when I go back onto arma my game changes name, from 'Respawn mission' to 'Respawn20%mission.Altis', and I cant open the game in Arma, please help

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any percentage symbols are a result of the name given to the mission, basically arma does not like spaces. They still work but display as percentage symbols. I tend to name a mission using underscores instead of spaces.
      As far as the mission not opening, there could be a few reasons for that but all of them should have given an error message on startup. Were there any error messages when you tried to load the mission? As the message itself would help towards knowing exactly what went wrong.

    • @lukeycapicino
      @lukeycapicino 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for replying, but when I open the mission in arma the nothing happens as if the file doesn't exsist., there is also a duplicated version of the mission just above the 20% mission. I can click on this and the game loads but with no respawn.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lukeycapicino If you have a duplicated version of one of your missions that will not load, check the mission folder and see if it even has a mission file. If it doesn't than just delete it since you already have another version of it that does load.
      Now the first thing to remember about the BIS respawn system is that it will not work in singleplayer and will only work in multiplayer. So limit your testing to the multiplayer editor and see if you have any better luck.
      The only steps to getting the system working is really just to place a marker called respawn_west (for blufor) and to add respawn = "BASE";
      respawnDelay = 3; to the description.ext file.

    do this respawn work for singleplayer?

  • @nopopshots2722
    @nopopshots2722 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why is that when I take the edited map, save it to multiplayer, then load it up, that I am the only one that can spawn, my friend spawns as a bird and is unable to play the game

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only cause of spawning as a bird I'm familiar with is to setup the option for it in the respawn options of description.ext for the mission. If you create a test mission with only playable units and nothing else does this still happen?

    • @nopopshots2722
      @nopopshots2722 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      currently I am working on a training map for my squad to train on, and I have literally nothing in except for a shooting range, a kill house, and five(5) playable characters. I have a journal entry in synced to the players so they know what to do, and where everything is. besides literally only cosmetics, and 5 playable units with custom loadouts (thanks to VR), there is nothing else in. I looked up tutorials on respawns (which is the problam) and they say to only add a modual of multiplayer, then respawns, and set them to the side you want and who can see it, I tried that didnt work, tried syncing the characters to it, didnt work, tried placing a trigger that is always active, wont work. and now I am here typing to you. I do have a recording software, i have 0 probalms recording what I have and sending it to you if you would like, but it is up to you.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first thing I'd suggest trying is deleting the respawn module since it doesn't seem to be working for you and place a marker named respawn_west (if you are using blufor units) on the location you want to use as a spawn point. Then add these lines to the description.ext file for the mission -
      respawn = "BASE";
      respawnDelay = 8;
      I've heard a few others that had issues with the respawn module as well it's possible something in the recent patches may have broken it though I haven't tested them since, but this will sort it out though and it should stop the bird spawning issue as well.

      On the topic of the description.ext file, I found the place where it is suppose to be, but there is only one map in there, and that map doesnt even have a desc.ext. I went to (C:\Users\SuperSixFour\Documents\Arma 3 - Other Profiles\-EC-Super-HS\mpmissions) but it isnt there. I have 2 profiles in game, so I need to place the map into my original character or does my second character have a different location where the map is at, I have about 10 maps on my second profile, but only the one is in that folder.

    I Tried to change the description.ext in the root folder, which the wiki directed me to. As nothing happened, other than the description.ext changed back to the way it was before, i tried to change the description.ext from my Steam folder. The description.ext in my steam folder, is only different in that it has some weird symbols in the end of it: ŒÜ¶võ†ÓTü.+·sª;
    Every time i try to setup my multiplayer server the game exit and gives me this message:
    "Data file too short 'mpmissions\Zeus%20testing.Altis.pbo'. Expected 902559961 B, got 6124 B"
    I assume that by changing back the description.ext in my Steam folder, i will be able to setup a multiplayer server again, but of course this also means that i can't use the re-spawn system.
    I would appreciate if you would make or direct me to a detailed video, about the description.ext file.
    Ps. In case you don't know what Steam is. (which i assume you do) It's a server system where you can buy your games, and download them from it. I believe that the way your mission's root folders are set up, is different from if you download Arma 3 by Steam or by CD.

    • @pickinthatbanjo
      @pickinthatbanjo  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Description.ext files are stored in your mission folders for each individual mission that you create. More specifically your ARMA 3 profiles or Arma 3 - Other Profiles folder contained in your documents folder.
      I am a bit confused since you say you changed (not exactly sure what you mean by changed, unless you are referring to the file format itself) the description.ext file in your root folder (also which root folder are you referring to?). Also you mention that you also changed a description.ext file in your steam folder which I don't quite understand either since there should not be a description.ext file in your steam folder, the file is only used by ARMA and only used when placed in a mission folder located in the missions folder found inside the ARMA 3 profiles folder.
      In regards to your request though, I did actually create a description.ext tutorial a month or so ago, here is a link to the video - ARMA 3 Editor - Creating Description.ext files

      The only reason I could think of for that to happen would be if they were AAF and set in the Intel tab for friendly to bluefor.

      yeah they can, it depends on how they are setup in the Intel tab. Default is Independent are friendly to blufor, just change it as needed.
