GoPro HERO 9 vs Hero 7 is it worth the upgrade ?

- I wanted to do a test and really see if the 9 was worth the upgrade because I was a little hesitant to get it at first.
So you can see the real differences in the features that the GoPro hero 9 has and compare them against the 7.

Simple, still not worth it. Hero 7 will do like 90% of the job. unless, you want to show off to some body that your Go Pro is the latest upgraded version.

I love my hero 7. For me, no need to upgrade since hero 7 still gives me great and amazing videos for my motovlog videos. Great comparison 👍

I have the gopro hero 7 black, and recently my stepbrother got the hero 9. Personally, I am not a professional filmer, so I am not shooting anything above 2.7k. The 7 works perfectly, no glitching, and stays cool. I have yet to test the hero 9, but the overall ease of use is not the greatest. If you don't have nails, or stron fingers, you'll find it pretty difficult to open the battery door, unlike the 7 which opens with the push of a button. Also it isn't as noticeable on camera, but the 7 is waay smaller and compact than the 9. At the end of the day, the hero 9 comes with great features, but it isn't too much of a difference that a little bit of editing can't fix. I would still buy the hero 7 over the hero 9.

Great video with all info i needed, so thank you for that. first time gopro buyer and originally was going to get the HERO7 in the sales, but the deals, especially bundle deals for the 9 makes it more sense to go straight for that.

The 9 doesn't fit in the 7 unfortunately, I was in the same boat, I had a case for the 7... the mic extension (at this point) doesn't work with the 9 but I hear an update to make it work is coming in a week or 2... but I ordered a Ulanzi case for the 9 and it looks so good! :) hope that helps! cheers

Thank so much for taking the time to make this video. This helped me decide if I wanted to pull the trigger on the new one or now. I use my Hero7's to film pov and 3rd person downhill mtb videos. I feel the sharper and more stable image will really add to the videos if used on the helmet. I will likely still use a Hero 7 for my chest mount to give that slightly more immersed/raw and real feel.

I didn't like it because frankly all I got from this is that the 9 is great and he loves it. I'm slightly exaggerating but most of this video was him talking about stuff 9 does that 7 doesn't. Not exactly the point though, that's an apple to oranges comparison. Of course the 7 sucks at timewarp... Because it doesn't do time warp!

7 is a great camera, I dont try to hate on it, I think the 9 has some cool different features that make it great to use for me. It doesn't make a difference to me which camera people use, I am just sharing my experience for anyone wanting to know

I have a Go Pro 7 can you use the Go pro mic adapter on the 9 as I like to plug in a external mic that is inside my motorcycle helmet

I use my GoPro mounted on my motorcycle going at 200+ kph and also free diving in open sea with whales. Not sure I want to do that with a $1000+ phone 🧐

hi Ant.. thanks so much for writing. Its always great when you are new to it... because you just keep with it and grow and grow!!! I would suggest something as easy as imovie which is on your mac right now. You can import your gopro video when you connect it to the computer and there are a lot of great tutorials (on youtube) on how to use it and getting started!

Thanks Danny for the video comparison. The GoPro 9 looks very good and I never have had a GoPro. May wait for the price to come down or sales on this unit. Probably by that time version 10 will be released.
Question for you Danny: The displays on the camera, is there any option to turn off one or both while recording? This would be for just special use for me. i dont mind the displays for normal use.

I would say it could be good if you had decent lighting and kept it on a tripod and turned hypersmooth off for better low light quality.

I actually dont have any other action cameras, (I wish my channel was bigger and they would send me them to review but I buy these cameras for now) however the 9 with the max lens mod on motorbikes is AMAZING!!!! you would love that combo
What type and size SD card do you use? I am hearing about some issues despite using the recommended brands.

what about upgrading from a hero 5 black? i broke my housing case clip. so trying to decide if i want to fork out the $400 deal at costo to get spare battery, hard case, 64gb sd card, accessories kit.
That is always the tough decision to make. Although that’s not a bad price. Check out GoPros website though because I think they just launched a deal

Hi Danilo... thank you so much for the kind words!!! as far as the screen, I think a lot of people think that the screen is more like an iPhone, but since this is an action cam, they made the touch needing a little more force. so usually holding it with one and and touching will work perfectly. Now if its just completely unresponsive maybe just hold the mode/power button down for like 10 seconds to restart it. (I haven't had any problems with mine)

Loving your videos, they are great! One question: is that true that you cannot see in real time in your GoPro App what you are recording from the 9? People say that it was possible with the 7. Moreover, I'm doubting between getting a second-hand 7 (dunno what would it be a fair price) or getting the 9 :-) Thanks in advance!

Does the front screen on the 9 soak up more battery? Is there an option to not have it on?
Yes you can quickly turn it to just the numbers or completely off .. I believe it would save the battery and heat

Hey! Amazing comparison. Sadly, I purchased the 7 few days back but actually isn't that bad to be fair. I am still confused with the best video settings for it though (For TH-cam). My best guess is:
4k 60fps protune on with gopro colour with upload out of premier pro downsizing to 1080p and using vbr 2 pass, maximum render and depth. 🤔
What are your suggestions?
You nailed it with the set up. That’s exactly would I used ... except sometimes I would go to 2.7 and linear mode. The 7 is still rad! I did a video about my set up, the audio mod with ulanzi case and a smart lav + is a great pairing with it!!

Hey dan, need some advise. I need a gopro to strap to a drone . Mainly to film clear high field shots at my sons peewee football games. Do you think the hero 9 would be the best option for me, Or should i stick with the cheaper hero 7?
Great question . When you say strap to the drone, which drone are you thinking ? And whether the gopro would even be better than a drone camera (depending on the drone) ... however I think the 9 is good for that extra bit of resolution and higher bitrate... but 7 would also look good if you can get a good enough price for the 7 to make it worth it.
I'm struggling here with the hero 9, I like latest and greatest, but I use my gopro 7 black for on motorcycle shots, on car shots, and on helmet stuff, b-roll using the karma (which the 9 doesn't fit). For those type of videos, would the hero 9 be that much of a jump over the 7?
I would say if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. The 9 is awesome and could argue that you wouldn’t need the karma with its advanced boost hypersmooth. The Mac lens mod, if you ever try it out on the 9 might be the selling point for you ... it is amazing

Just upgraded from 7 to 9! I love the 7, my favorite feature about the 9 is actually the horizon leveling which you didn’t talk about but that’s gonna make mountain biking content worlds easier to watcg

Curious about the color differences that didn't get mentioned. Were both set either to gopro or flat, and was any color grading done after?
Ya sorry, I didn’t mention that. They were both set on the default gopro color. However I’ve changed my settings to flat which I think looks better

When you compared audio with the media mod on the 7, it sounded to me like audio on the 9 (without the mod) sounded very much like the 7 (with the mod) would you agree?
the 9 does sound pretty good with no mics, however when any wind comes at you it does its best to stop the wind where it kind of messes the sound. but thanks for the comment!!!

There are a lot of easy simple free editing apps, could be on your phone or computer. Gopro released one but it’s not free. I paid for Final Cut Pro a while back but it’s a great one

Hi does the Hero 7 fit the Karma Drone harness of the 5? I’m considering upgrading from my Hero 4 Black as the camera body cracked...or I might put a drop or two of crazy glue to fix the crack! The 7 is still available in Costa Rica but pricey!
The 7 is the same size as the 5 so it should fit
