    READ BELOW IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE/QUESTION
    Thanks a ton for the upload. I'm going to assume you are a service tech for nissan since you have an actual bay/lift area and have the most comprehensive guide on youtube. Not sure why folks are having trouble understanding what to do. I think it's the fact you are running it a second time with the drain bolt out that's tripping people up. It's an odd concept if you aren't mechanically inclined. I understood everything to the T though so thanks for the video dude. First person with a great video, straight to the point, no bs. I would maybe pin in your comments section about the crush washer. I only saw it because I read every single comment and that one was at the bottom.
    Or if you want to pin this so people can see some top F.A.Q.S.
    Things you will need for this video:
    4.5 qts of fluid NISSAN NS3 ONLY OEM (You don't need the 7 qts as many people have believed. That is only for a rebuild)
    crush washer - he says in another comment it's the same size as the oil plug, you can find this at probably any auto parts store.
    19mm wrench for the drain bolt
    I think he said a 5mm allen for inside the drain pan overflow plug/tube
    You DO NOT need to change the filter unless rebuilding due to metal shavings entering the system if something breaks
    A long flat head screw driver to remove the port to the system (remove all of the battery assy and rad overflow to make it easier to access (saw this in another video)
    some rags/drain pan
    to perform this you need to make sure your car is level and up to temperature (110*)
    a lift if you are a G unit
    some dignity if you have any left

      I have a question. I have a 2014 Nissan Versa SV Note here 36,000 miles also (salvaged vehicle) now rebuilt title and I had an incident where the transmission fluid line leaked and all the trans fluid came out. When I towed it to a nearby shop in the area they said one of the transmission fluid lines was caused by the radiator being slightly dented along with it overtime causing the leak. The radiator is fine because the a/c works and everything. They then ordered in parts for that line while they put in a temporary line to hold the fluid together which they said they tested and they decided to throw in the Carquest CVT transmission fluid brand instead of the OEM Nissan N-S3 CVT Fluid. Would you think aftermarket transmission fluid would affect my transmission??? I called them and they said it's compatible with N-S3 and said he would show me the bottle where the description says that!? Pls help. Plus I never told them to throw in Carquest CVT transmission fluid in there either. They never called me for any updates! I am always the one calling bout it because it is my car after all!

      " Not sure why folks are having trouble understanding what to do". Do you understand what it takes to do a hip replacement or how to design and engineer building a bridge or building? Probably not as most of us don't. Don't assume everyone knows the ins and outs of things you are familiar with doing or are knowledgeable about. It is clear with the comment section that most have never done this before and that's fine. Why do you think so many have asked effing questions? Are they dumb? No. They might be experts in things you don't have a clue about so show some respect, it goes a long way. One thing both of you left out which maybe would confuse people less is explain the function of the overflow tube he pulls out. It's works like your toilet overflow tube. When a liquid goes above the tube, it drains out, hence into the pan or out the tube if the drain plug is removed when overfilled. In the case of your toilet, it won't flood your house if your water fails to shutoff filling the tank. Wow, that's a difficult one to grasp! It's not an odd concept and you don't need to be mechanically inclined to understand it as you claim.

      I have a 2014 sentra and its at 101,000 miles. Not the original owner. I noticed that at take off it feels like it struggles and when driving on the interstate the rpm fluctuates a little. If im at 2000 its just to say 2300 and back down till i let off the gas and get back on it and its good. And ive had it completely drop really low when getting on the gas like foot to the floor and it isnt increasing power but keeps the same speed. And i let off the gas for a few seconds and its fine. Im really hoping it isnt the cvt going out. Do you think a fluid change would help? Or is the cvt going out? Or a different problem?

    Update - This is what I did for the entire process, hope it would help another DIYer.
    Remove the hose between the air filter and the vicinity of driver's headlight (1 screw and loosen 1 hose clamp)
    Remove the battery (2 nuts at the +/- posts, 1 screw in the bottom)
    Loosen the small electrical box/panel between the battery and the coolant reservoir (3 screws).
    Loosen the coolant reservoir (1 screw). Move the reservoir out of the way. Better access to the CVT cap.
    Use a flat head screw driver to remove the CVT cap covering the CVT port (Note 1).
    Raise the car (driver side) a little so I could see the 19mm bolt. Remove the 19mm bolt above a drain pan. It took ~ 3-5 minutes to get all the excess fluid out (my local dealer did not do the final excess fluid removal 2 years ago).
    Loosen (initial loosening and then 1-2 turns) the "5mm tube" (Note 2) with a 5mm Hex key.
    Lower the car to floor level. Remove the jack.
    Use the 5mm Hex, remove the "5mm tube" completely. CVT fluid will pour out. In my case, it took ~1 hours for the fluid to stop.
    Re-install the "5mm tube" with a hex (do not over tighten, you don't want to damage the groove). Re-install the 19mm bolt (with a new washer, and do not tighten too much, this bolt will be removed later).
    Fill 4 1/2 quarts of NS3 through the CVT port (Note 3).
    Reinstall the CVT cap on the CVT port , reinstall the coolant reservoir, the small electrical panel, the battery (Note 4) and the hose.
    Make sure the parking brake is still on, turn on the car, let it sit for ~5 minutes, then with right foot on the brake, began to change gear at ~5-10 seconds interval, from PL in the next 10 minutes.
    Finally, set gear to P. The car was still on.
    With the drain pan still below the CVT reservoir, parking brake still on, remove the 19mm bolt, excess CVT fluid will pour out from through the "5mm tube." Wait until the flow slowed down significantly and drip, re-install the 19mm bolt, tighten it.
    Turn off the car. Clean up the mess and have a beer.
    I drove my car around for ~5 miles. Man, I was so happy. No more complaining, kicking, jumping, growling during acceleration/deceleration, left/right turns.
    Now I have another dilemma, my wife had her Altima's CVT fluid changed (~$230) at a local Nissan dealer ~3 weeks ago. Did they remove the excess CVT fluid ? :( The car had been acting normally, no unusual moves during acceleration/deceleration/left/right/stop.
    Note 1 - This is the hardest part. I believe that a short (~2-3") flat head could do a better job. I also tied a ~3-feet string to my screw driver for easier retrieval in case of dropping it.)
    Note 2 : This "5mm" tube is an excellent design. It controls the fluid level to specs., if we do the final drain. The Nissan dealer that change the CVT fluid on this car 2 years ago did not to the final drain. Bad bad bad dealer.
    Note 3: I found a very small red funnel from Harbor Freight lying around. I also found some kind of clear PVC tubes (for mounting balloon, ~1/4" OD, ~2 feet in length) in the party section at my local Dollar Tree store. The funnel fit into the tube and the tube fit into the CVT port perfectly. Adding fluid through this setup was slow, but it worked.
    Note 4 : I removed the battery connectors from the battery, submerge them in a glass of ~70 water:~30 vinegar by volume for ~2-3 minutes to remove the powdery junk. Stirring occasionally would also help the cleaning. Make sure to rinse/dry well prior to the re-installation on the battery.
    Lesson learned:
    Excess CVT fluid will HARM your car.
    Do not trust work at Nissan dealers.
    2013 Versa SV w/ 298425 miles.
    Thank you, and subbed.

    Thanks for showing how to remove the cap. I struggled at first but I got it after a few runs.
    I had my 2013 Nissan Versa's CVT fluid changed at a Nissan dealer ~2 years ago. Since then, the transmission has been acting strangely, i.e. noisier and jumpy. I thought the car was low on CVT fluid.
    I decided to check the fluid level with a dip stick (from Ebay). While the car was still cold, the CVT level was double of that of the "HOT" mark. I used the oil's dipstick and the result was also about x2 of "HOT."
    Once I removed the 19mm nut, the CVT fluid poured out like a river. They obviously did not drain the excess fluid above the mouth of the tube that had the 5mm hex groove :-(
    The poor car had been tortured by my ignorance. Fortunately I drove only ~5k in the last 2 years.
    Great video.

    This was way easier for him to do than for me. Finally got that stupid cap off with the help of my wife an overpriced long flat head screwdriver (needed the matching Phillips head to get the stupid cap back into place). We could not use those funnels to get the fluid in (ours is 2015). We ended up having to buy yet another funnel that would work from an auto part store that had an extended flexible length.

    As the pinned comment says, this is by far the most comprehensive video. After a lifetime of being intimidated by the CVT, I feel like I can take it on. I do have one question raised by the local dealerships here in PR: does the transmission need to be reprogrammed after every flush or are they just trying to get more money out of me? I was told by two techs that it's essential, stating that without it the transmission just won't work as it's supposed to. But I've been researching for hours and have found nothing to back this claim up. Now I'm not sure if I want to do the change myself (which I feel I can) or just pay the $300+ in order to avoid giving my wife ammo if anything goes sideways 😄.

    So after the first draining wherein you removed the 19mm bolt & the 5mm Allen bolt, you added 4.5 quarts of Nissan NS3 fluid. Then idle the engine for about 15 minutes while shifting to different gears.
    After that drain the second time, only removing the 19mm bolt.
    My question now is: why you didn't refill the fluid loss after the second draining? How many quarts of fluid was drained on that 2nd time?

    • @paididoy
      @paididoy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don't add additional fluid after the 2nd draining, how will you know you have the correct level of fluid inside that cvt transmission?

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you first drain it the car is off and only what's in the pan gets drained. The second time you drain it while running (with the 5mm Allen installed) and warmed up so w.e is is the torque converter gets drained along with any extra fluid

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The CVT does it automatically . The 5mm is the overflow tube so w.e fluid is extra above that mark it gets drained

    • @diegosc985
      @diegosc985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because it was the overflow tube, it's fluid that must be removed in order to reach peak fluid level.
      If you put that fluid back in, you will have too much fluid in your transmission.

    Hi This was a very informative video. I fully undertand how to do this the right way. (Your way) This raises two very important questions about the external oil cooler. I own 2013 Nissan Sentra SR. First question: Is it recommended to warm up the engine before draining out old oil? If yes, then for how long for warm up? Secondly, I know OEM CTV cooler has only two ports which allows cooliant line run through it and act as heat exchanger to cool the oil which is far from enough cooling. I want to add external direct line oil cooler which will require 4 port CVT cooling device with two functions that acts as heat exhanger and direct oil cooling. Once I drain the oil with 19mm cap off and take out the overflow tube out to drain out most of the oil then reinstall both overflow tube and 19mm cap back on. I know I have to drain out the cooliant too which needs new cooliant anyway. Then replace the 2 port CVT cooler to 4 port CVT cooler. My question is, will 4 and half of oil be enough to fill up the pan to lube up the transmission and fill up the oil through the new 4 port CVT cooler and the extra tubing that runs to the cooler and return line back to CVT cooler while i let the car run for 15 minutes without running low on oil? Or do you recommend adding more than 4 and half of oil before start up? I look forward to your answers...

    Hello Jav, you helped me last week but I have one more quick question if you'd be so kind.
    Heat car up for 15 minutes
    Remove cap from engine bay
    Remove 19mm drain plug
    Remove 5mm drain plug
    Plug 19mm & 5mm drain plugs
    Pour in 4.5 quarts
    Run car 15 minutes (cycle through gears)
    Remove ONLY 19mm drain plug until fluid dribbles then screw plug back in
    My question is.....I'm nervous that too much fluid will dribble out in the end when I'm "leveling out" and I want to be extra super safe, can I add that last 0.5 quart of left over fluid to the trans to be on the safe side or is that a really risky & stupid thing to do because too much fluid is just as dangerous as too little?
    It's only an extra half quart it's not that much right?

    Hi, I’m looking at this video because my Nissan Sentra 2013 just started shuttering a bit, as well as my RPM meter “bouncing” when it surpasses 2-3 RPM. I was thinking it was the CVT and that it maybe needed a fluid change, considering it hasn’t had one since it was bought because Nissan does not inform its customers of that. My question is: is it worth changing the fluids out or is my transmission just done for at this point? My car is 130K miles and has not had CVT service and just started shuddering a bit when you surpass 65 MPH

    Thanks for the video. I wanted to change the CVT fluid on my Nissan Sentra 2015. I didn't know how to open that overflow tube.
    I just have a question for you. I've read in many documents that Nissan Sentra 2013+ needs 7.25 quarts CVT fluid but you filled up just 4.5 quarts and even you started your car and opened that 19 mm bolt and let the extra fluid to come out of your car, which means the car lost almost between 0.5-1 quart of its new CVT fluid. So can you add just 3.5-4 quarts of fluid to save that 1 quart of fluid or is it necessary to do it?

    • @JavsGarage
      @JavsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That 7 quarts is if you're rebuilding the CVT. In that case the torque converter is drained and all the inside lines . But as a service it doesn't require all 7. I said 4 1/2 just to make sure it's filled correctly and there's no need to add more after

The Nissan Versa Forum guys told me the Carquest wouldn't hurt it so much as to where having no fluid in my car to begin with would def hurt it. Drain 5mm then reinsert 19 & 5

      its was over filled a bit, at 2:25 he pulls out the overflow tube. the tube might be 3 inches long, so anything over those 3 inches will drain out. you will still have 3 inches under the tube in the pan full with transmission fluid
