Yes, the mother too stopped to give a lift to a person who has no money to buy a bus fare to go home. Very matured young man. Many at his age are lost and rebellious. His grandma and mother taught him life lessons well. He lives by experiencing it in his daily life. Older generation went through hardship and poverty so they will always advise younger generation to cherish food. Chinese upbringing to value family, community and help others. Father has more Western values and individual thinking. He will grow up to be a good man.
I'm now an old English woman, & was similarly taught by the example of my parents who lived through the great depression in an area which was badly affected. I was a child during post WW2 austerity - nothing approaching the devastation China experienced. I am totally convinced that it is the right way to live, but there seem to be few of us left now, & I feel a misfit in my own country. We made so many mistakes that China has avoided thus far. I am very sad to hear that many young people are lost & rebellious. In my own country, as a stereotype, I notice not only a lack of good parenting for several reasons, but when not at school, parents take them to recreational activities still with their own peer group. Thus they suddenly enter the adult world without any experience of it & feel lost. The only adults they have met are parents & teachers. I find that the few children I know who mature, have had experience with other adults often watching them at work as they chat. IMO children need to learn much more than academic attainment. It's a difficult one. They need education to get a good job in the city, & lead a better life style which is what all parents hope for their children and they need to acquire other skills. I suspect that Richard has matured so well because of his experience in the adult world through his travels with his father. Yes, much much better than summer camps.
I probably will never get tired of watching any video of wonderful town of Yangshuo! This isn't even the main downtown of Guilin city, yet you can already witness the extent of rapid social and economic development that happened in China rn, which is fantastic to learn in this case knowing how the region around Guilin must be pretty challenging for a great, rapid socio-economic transformation and modernization but China had once again proven themselves to be fully capable of doing that😃😍
I get this nice warm feeling watching Richard. He’s a lot more matured than kids the same age in western society. I would like to see more of him, please.
Richard is lucky to be living in China during its economic transformation and booming years as during his grandma's younger days, many, including my ancestors, would risked the high seas trying to escape the hardship and poverty to a foreign land, history seems to be turning around and those who stayed are now better off than many overseas chinese
In this country they also skin alive fully conscious dogs in fur leather factory and throw them away in a huge garbage bin. Where they die of pain and hunger. And they take sharks out of oceans and cut their fins and throw them back in the ocean. For stupid dish called shark fin soup. God please save the world. China is destroying the earth in the matter of no time. If these 1.4 billion people keep eating marine life 24/7, soon there won't be a single fish left in the oceans. God make china go extinct before they make marine life go extinct
Richard has a big heart! I think this is the most precious gift he got from his family. As a Chinese living in Germany for years, I still always feel the positive influence of my parents and grandparent. The culture, the food, the tradition, as well as the attitude towards life will stay with me for the rest of my life, no matter where I live. P.S. I really hope the corona will end soon so that I can come back to China to visit my parents and friends, I miss the food sooooooooo much!!

Actually according to psychologists, moms passed on intelligence to her kids at 99% rate while dads passed the physical attributes. I really love visiting China after watching those various blogs by among foreigners visited China. Great interview 👏
Humble understatement of him to say that he is learning English. His English might be not as perfect as it whould have been, had he grown up in an anglophone country, but he has no problems to express his thoughts and his pronunciation is neat. It also seems like he is really relaxed talking in English, not anxious. I think he accepted the translation offer when speaking about his grandma out of sheer politeness, no real need to do so. His English is really good. Good boy! I hope, he will have a long and happy life.

I’d been to YangShou once about 19 years ago, we’d been to the popular show “The Imagine of Liu San Jie”, which was amazing, we loved it so much! I’m a GuangZhou born Chinese, I moved to Auckland of New Zealand when I 13 years old, and now, I lived in Toronto of Canada. I love to go back to my mother land “China” so much, love the food and friends over there. And I missed my family and old friends in New Zealand a lot too!

Wow, amazing. Oli, when I first saw your video in 2019, I was amazed how mature you were. Now seeing Richard, I am amazed at another mature young man! It's usually difficult to have a conversation this deep with this age group but Richard is very precocious. When he mentioned that he's never been able to go aboard, I can see his eyes had some degree of angst and regret. I hope that he will have a chance to travel to New Zealand and abroad soon.

Great to know more about Richard, nice interview. What people don't realize is that Richard's upbringing is kind of the standard in China, because some comments say that most his age are rebellious or out of touch (maybe in the West), on the contrary I think most are like Richard. The lessons he's learning in his household are very standard (with each household's individual twist) and in essence, the stories he told have the very particular Chinese characteristics: filial piety, humility, devotion, conservation/presevation, and perseverance. This is true even in Chinese households outside China.
Shenzhen is my hometown. I left Shenzhen for the UK about 16years ago. The change about Shenzhen the last one and half decades is absolutely enormous. I haven't been back to Shenzhen since the Christmas in 2019 due to the pandemic. I always image how many new things I would see when I get a chance to go back to Shenzhen again.
My favorite thing about the Barretts is how they brim with joy that shows how humbled and privileged they feel about doing what they do and love. Big up da man dem!

Richard is born also as a Chinese citizen with a Chinese mother. He can choose between his New Zealand and Chinese citizenship at 18.
China doesn't allow dual citizenship so how can he be both? His parents would have had to choose his nationality for him when he was born.

Great to know more about Richard, nice interview. What people don't realize is that Richard's upbringing is kind of the standard in China, because some comments say that most his age are rebellious or out of touch (maybe in the West), on the contrary I think most are like Richard. The lessons he's learning in his household are very standard (with each household's individual twist) and in essence, the stories he told have the very particular Chinese characteristics: filial piety, humility, devotion, conservation/presevation, and perseverance. This is true even in Chinese households outside China.
Shenzhen is my hometown. I left Shenzhen for the UK about 16years ago. The change about Shenzhen the last one and half decades is absolutely enormous. I haven't been back to Shenzhen since the Christmas in 2019 due to the pandemic. I always image how many new things I would see when I get a chance to go back to Shenzhen again.
