Oli, you were interviewing perhaps the most hard working generation of all time in China. Most of them came from the poorest/most underdeveloped areas of the country to big cities and hope to leave their marks. They worked through all kinds of harshest conditions so that their children would have much better lives. They never complained. Just worked harder. These are the true heros of the China miracle that we came to know. Thanks for showing their everyday life to the bigger audience.
Thank you for showing the life of the hardest working people in a most prosperous city. Huge appreciation to Hong Jie and her colleagues for keeping the City nice and clean.
Chinese policy is always pay a little bit instead 100% free because government don’t want them supposed there are free lunch in this planet, no work no gain
Paying one cent means the workers are buying it using their hard earned money and thus not a beggar. That is why they still need to pay, to maintain the workers dignity. Also to give those receiving that they cannot take it for granted. It is a psychological thing. The Chinese understand this very well.
This CONCEPT was introduced by the govn to " Respect and Reward " those working class groups that many people would NOT work in. Street cleaners is one of this group. Sanitation workers , Parks manitenance, River maintenance, etc . Hard Work under the SKY irrespective of WEATHER or SEASON. ...... Recently...Insurance coverage was introduced including better pension, health care, etc for these groups on workers.
China as a whole really respect their workers. That is the main reason why people are passionate about their work. I am not saying that people don't look down on some jobs and look up on other jobs. It happens in all societies. But Chinese are generally respect other people doing their jobs. And people doing their jobs do not feel bad about doing the jobs they chose, based on economic or education situations. They believe in hard work and the result of hard work. So society respects them and they respect themselves, thus the passion.
This is one of the best episodes of your channel. Other vloggers on China just pay lip service about how clean Chinese cities are. Yet you actually get into the details of the people who quietly making it possible. You now earned my utmost respect.

Growing up in Shenzhen I wouldn't say so... I mean, there are clean streets and dirty streets, however I wouldn't say it's the cleanest in the world... that's too much
No. As a Chinese I don't agree with u. Japan has the cleanest streets in the world! They can even drink water from their flush toilet and also the nuclear contaminated water can be drinking!
We need this in America..but too bad people here are spoiled selfish doesn't care for other safety. Only in rich neighbors you'll see clean. China can show the world how every inches of the cities can be clean if you have the right mind of people.
Hongjie's attitude towards work, life and the people around her is so positive and heart warming. She shows that she cares for the team's wellbeing and is respectful. Anyone who works with her would be so lucky!
In fact, the Chinese meaning of Hong Jie is a sister that her surname is Hong. When Chinese people call others, they like to call them brothers or sisters, uncles or aunts as family members call them according to their age
no, i don't think it's because of that, 1 cents is basically free, they could have just give free meals , the reason for the 1 cent is i think for the resturant to have acutal numbers of meals given out, which would later be compensated by the municiple government.
many people in china would offer them cold drinks and food for free , and be very polite to them. chinese culture influence people to respect thoes who do labour work like cleaners or delivery man, or dangerous work like fire fighter, police or soilders. disadvantaged people like disabled people, old people, young people. here we have empathy towards others which was part of confucius teaching.
Absolutely excellent video. Excellent on at least 2 fronts. 1. Shows the pride people have in keeping their city clean, something those of us in the West have forgotten. And 2. It shows the human side of the Chinese and counters the relentless efforts of western media to dehumanise Chinese - present them as some sort of ‘evil’ automatons.
The one thing so noticeable about Chinas cities, is how clean and well managed the streets are. Contrast that to Kensington, Philadelphia, a litter strewn paradise.
I watched the Kensington street of Ph too. Feel so bad the young peoples walked like dead people or zombies on the side walk. A lot garbage on streets.
No offen just want to be clear, part of Philadelphia areas are also incredibly clean, there will be a big contrast when comparing Center city and out skirt neighborhoods, Check out Benjamin Franklin blvd, and Society Hill, those are very safe places for visitors.
In fact, as an immigrant society, the U.S. government only needs to spend a small amount of money to hire specialized cleaners, which can also increase employment and reduce unemployed people. In theory, the U.S. should be easier to increase such jobs than China.
My appreciation to Hong Jie and her mates for keeping China's Pride clean. Enjoyed your vid... U have a knack for this. My Best Wishes to your Father. Greetings of Peace from E Africa
There are so many lower skill jobs in the UK that are unfilled because people simply don't want to work in them when they can earn more money from government handouts. If the UK copied China's system, valuing hard work with less handouts for doing nothing, then maybe we would have cleaner streets.

The contents in Oli's video lately has highlight the real life to live in China, keep up with the good work
that's really insightful, glad ya made this! and that's hella heartwarming that they're providing their co-workers essentially almost free food once per week. It really does increase morale!
Thank you Oli! First it is amazing to see restaurants (more than one) offering a free meal per week! Workers feel appreciated and they do take proud of their work. Second, it is right for you to bring up: most of the workers from other provinces will eventually go back home with a new house (since they have made money and sent half back home to support the family and build a new house or two) A good retirement after decades of hard work. That is how poverty is eliminated.
Next one "life as a volunteer social workers in Shenzhen". Every city in China have such a group of people who use their free time to do social works. They help directing tracffics, cleaning the streets, etc. It should be meaningful to do a video about them.
If you go to Hunan today, it seems even little cities and villages are wealthy now as well. I visited a tiny village at CNY in the mountains and they had expensive cars parked in the driveways, with all the modern appliances in their homes you might find in the city.
Did anyone NOTICE that in CHINA ... basic Necessities are "Cheap" so that many can affort it. Clothes, food, bulbs, pens, reading glasses, transport, bicycles, e-bikes, etc are widely availiable at "cheap" prices ? Even handphones at Yuan 200 to 300 ? ( Us 30 to 45 ) . Lower income workers are "Rewarded" ....... Not PAMPERED .
I like your last one about the "engaging" , a different perspective. I think you can also put out more of it, telling the true thoughts of Americans/Canadians who really have been to China, now that the governing system in these places are literally broken, people should have their voice heard.
1 cent meal.... wow!!! This video warms the heart. China is a caring society. It’s not just the cost of the meal, it’s also the opportunity cost the restaurant has to bear. This also speaks volumes about the general public’s acceptance of the cleaners’ presence in the restaurants, no wonder they are happy workers. And to charge 1 cent, a token sum, instead of giving a free meal also gives the recipients some sense of dignity. This also a good way for the restaurants to account for the meals being given away and prevents an errant worker from selling away free meals
What goes out will come around and these generous restaurants need not worry about having no business for as long as they do their part for society. This video really warms the heart.
If there are no cleaners what would LIFE BE. Respect for thier honest job. As now in US they are facing workers strike to bad, need to address if not what would LIFE BE.
OMG. I love your vlog so much, especially the one that is so sentimental and positive energy to inspire others who come from the same background as these street cleaners. I like the fact that you actually put efforts in making vlog to show most ordinary working class people in China rather than flash and rich and well to doing people in China. This video also shows the openness and fairness of the new Chinese society. What a society to work for and to live in. This is a fantastic vlog. Keep coming and we keep watching.
Thanks Oli, for showing areas how China upkeep and have things organised for common folks. Eg the hotline service you shown in other video. Good job, Oli. These are shots we won't get to know as tourists.
Ollie, can't believe how much you've changed from a very shy boy to now stepping out to help others. Hat off to you. wish you have a very happy life and all the very best wishes.
I am not sure how such a simple life can make them happy and none of them seem to complain that they work as cleaners. Its also amazing how the businesses give them free meals. What a wonderful working arrangement. Those courtesies and systems will never work here in the States.
This is an excellent idea for a series showing the daily lives of the ordinary person going about their daily lives. Best way to break down perceived barriers of people who have never been to China to understand that people everywhere have more things in common than they think. The street cleaners may appear to do lowly work but there is dignity in their work. Kudos for showing a glimpse of it.
The world would be a better place for everyone if only there are more Barrett to reveal the true lives in China. I am not surprise by these hard working people as I have seen and experience the various cities of China myself and marvel at the cleanliness in the streets and roads in China.
So different parts of society come together, forming a positive social environment for respect for street cleaners. In doing so, corporations show social responsibility, ie, Tencent here in this story, building & enhancing a good public reputation; the restaurants receiving cleaners in uniform, a good advertisement for showing they are a social responsible business. That is how 'political correctness' should be.
Great video Oli. Can we have more like this. It really gives us an insight into people's lives in China. One thing, can you also ask them what problems they have in their work and what they would like to see improved.
Hi, Oli, since I'm working online doing translation, I check out your Barrett channel daily and tonight, (well, it's already the next morning) I'm quite awed by this unusual video clip that you've shared. Yes, it's rather atypical of the clips you upload but it's interesting in its own way and very heart-warming. Thanks, again. I've been to Shenzhen once, for 3 days and I love it there. The park there, 东湖公园, East Lake Park, is awesome. The streets are so clean, you could almost walk around barefoot. I like the story in this one and I'm sharing it with friends and relatives. Well done! Keep up the good work and thank you for doing this, i.e. telling the world this side of China which the world should know. My prayers for you dad's speedy recovery! I love how they are humanizing the workers by giving almost a free meal each week :) Please do the same stories for other public workers (like delivery guy, police, bus drivers, etc)
This is what I like about your channel: you bring so many different aspects of life in China to us. If it is a shoe factorry, mud bath in the mountains or like this one about street cleaners. Please keep finding other interesting topics. The other thing is that you still had 15 negative comments to this video. What kind of idiot would give a "thumb down" to this ???
Oli, well done. I always respect them. We could enjoy the sanitary environment because of their hard works. Giving them a smile is a kind of support to them.😊👏

Little did I know about the city I was born and raised. In Shenzhen we always appreciate the cleaners, I remembered my kinder and primary school teachers telling us to waive hands and say hi to the cleaners when we go out for excursions, good memories flash back. Thanks Oli!

Regardless, these peoples work deserved to be recognized. And you, Oli, are doing a fabulous job!
Thanks for keeping China clean and beautiful.
If there are no cleaners what would LIFE BE. Respect for thier honest job. As now in US they are facing workers strike to bad, need to address if not what would LIFE BE.
Agree, they are an essential part of our society!
Saw a piece of news this morning saying that cleaners in Shenzhen now have 1 free meal every week in the restaurant.
Thanks Oli, for showing areas how China upkeep and have things organised for common folks. Eg the hotline service you shown in other video. Good job, Oli. These are shots we won't get to know as tourists.
So nice to see these workers get the respect they deserve. The one cent meal is a wonderful idea.
Ollie, can't believe how much you've changed from a very shy boy to now stepping out to help others. Hat off to you. wish you have a very happy life and all the very best wishes.
Day in a life of someone is very interesting, makes more people aware of the peoples lives😊👍
I am not sure how such a simple life can make them happy and none of them seem to complain that they work as cleaners. Its also amazing how the businesses give them free meals. What a wonderful working arrangement. Those courtesies and systems will never work here in the States.
Trust your country,they will
Oli you are really doing a good job.we all should appreciate the job that the cleaners do for us every day.
what a nice video. a normal person's simple day but lots of good stories inside.
Thank you the Barrett team. I love you both.
Now I know why China is so clean. Good job!
You are a kind person, you are contributing to Chinese society, harmony.
That is how 'political correctness' should be.
finally. it was time to make a Chinese protagonist. Please more videos with this biographical format.
I visited Chinta twice . Every time I enjoyed the cleanliness of the whole country !!
Amazing quality of footages at very beginning with buildings in cube shape. Thank you Oli for another interesting topic video! I do want to see more of these coming
I love how they are humanizing the workers by giving almost a free meal each week :) Please do the same stories for other public workers (like delivery guy, police, bus drivers, etc)
This is what I like about your channel: you bring so many different aspects of life in China to us. If it is a shoe factorry,
mud bath in the mountains or like this one about street cleaners. Please keep finding other interesting topics. The other
thing is that you still had 15 negative comments to this video. What kind of idiot would give a "thumb down" to this ???
1% scumbag principle
Agree
The Republicans...they dislike Socialism.....😂😂😂
You have the BEST comment! I liked it 👏👏👏
I plan to move back to China with my families in 3 years.
Thank you so much, even I'm a Chinese in Hong Kong , I didn't know that there is a one cent meal for the street cleaners in China
Oli, well done. I always respect them. We could enjoy the sanitary environment because of their hard works. Giving them a smile is a kind of support to them.😊👏
Thank you so much for making this video about the ordinary workers who are the unsung heroes of modern day city life.
KEEP IT UP FOR KEEPING THE CITY OF SHENZHEN CLEAN ,
LOVE YOUR VIDEO THANK YOU MR.BARRET.
👍👍👍❤️🇸🇬
Really really nice to see a positive posting about everyday life in China. Non political and informative. I like
Keep up with this great series - it would be very insightful and enlightening!
Great work, Oli, cannot wait to see the next one day life of someone. It's very good to show how real China is.
As a shenzhener, I like the video, thanks for your efforts.
Very nice video. Support. Thanks for telling the truth
Love it! Thanks for taking us along cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
hard working people, respect
awesome and yes Oli, more videos on the little armies that drive the big cities everyday.
This was really good to watch. Interesting, enlightening and inspirational. Would love to see more of similar stuff of daily life in China! Thanks, Oli, for your videos. Also, all the best to your Dad. Wishing him speedy recovery!
Little did I know about the city I was born and raised. In Shenzhen we always appreciate the cleaners, I remembered my kinder and primary school teachers telling us to waive hands and say hi to the cleaners when we go out for excursions, good memories flash back. Thanks Oli!
This video is very special. All kinds of people in China enjoy their life
Fantastic! I haven’t known that in Shenzhen this one cent program has started! That is meaningful!
