Dust bowl was only 100 years ago- people have forgotten that US citizens starved to death. Appreciate what you have. The world is a brutal place
We forget our history so fast. Even our recent history.
My mom was a Texan, it's not a New Year without black eyed peas with a smoked ham hock. She always added jalapenos to her cornbread. Loved watching this, found you through Uncle Roger. Happy New Year.

My granny would also put a dime (covered) in the cabbage for good fortune. Been eating like that for years. Never got rich though lol

I am vegan but Kent is still my favorite cook, he has a real feel for the food, and cooks like me; no measure by eye. He is also the Beanmaster, he knows that beans are good for your heart and your pocket. I bought enough ingredients to make bean stew for two days and i cost me less than $5cad. I just covert his dishes with vegan milk and butter etc. Thanks Kent you are the best

My black eyed peas are waiting! Absolutely love your videos! This is my first Christmas/New years without my mother. She was 96 and left in August. I’m keeping her traditions alive!

My husband bought me 3 of your cook books for Christmas. What beautiful cook books. The pictures, stories and recipes. A Taste of Cowboy, Comfort food the Cowboy way and Faith, Family and Feast . Absolutely the best cookbooks I've ever had. Wishing You , Shan and the pups a very Happy and Healthy New Year.
My wife is from Kansas and is half African American and her family tradition was eating black-eyed peas on New Years to bring good luck (Something I never heard of being raised in New Jersey). She ate this stuff called "Hoppin' John" (pretty similar to your Black Eyed Pea Soup) but I don't care for it so we started our own tradition making Cowboy Caviar, so we still get the good luck!

It's been a tradition in my parents' house to cook up black eyed peas with bacon, thyme, chiles and onions for New Years Day. I've loved black eyed peas since I was little.

I grew up in Charleston, SC. We ate small reddish brown field peas with rice. Most everyone I knew made this for New Year's Day.
Always spread laughter!!! It stimulates endorphins. Endorphins make people happy. Happy people don't kill each other! Plus, by spreading laughter, the universe heals not only you, but the world, (according to my grandmother). Blessings and peace be with you everyday 🙏.

In Kentucky, it was cooked cabbage. Mamma said cabbage was for folding money and blackeyed peas was for coins. Cornbread was made in a cast iron skillet, started on the stove and finished in the oven. Flipped over onto a plate, brown crusty side up, cut into triangles, with a slather of butter down the middle. Granny made a mixture of butter and sorghum molasses on her plate and smeared some on each bite of cornbread.

Black eyed peas with salt pork and a little brown sugar was a New Years Eve tradition, with Johnny Cake. And we always had apple cider vinegar on the table to splash over greens, spinach, kale, beet greens, or collards. And technically you can’t cal it bourbon unless it’s produced in Kentucky.

We all have our traditions. Never heard of Black eyed Peas as to being good luck on New Years. Until I moved here, although most of the anglo people here do that. Still harvesting some Collards as well as Mustard Greens so eating that as well. Per my boyfriend, we will be doing the "traditional" Menudo (yes breakfast of champions) New Years morning. May everyone have a safe and sane New Year's eve and into 2024!

Kent/Shannon, I might mention, adding bourbon to the receipt does not add alcohol. Alcohol evaporates at 170* so you are adding flavor only.
We always ate 'clay peas' every New Year's Day...with pork jawbone/fatback, greens and cornbread. That was in growing up in Appalachia..we never raised black eyed peas. I FINALLY found those same clay peas...they are called "red island peas" now!
Raised by my Texan grandma and Louisiana Grandpa, it wasn’t new years without black eyed peas. Thank you for showing Eureka, I’ll have to visit there. Looks like a cool place

My Paternal Grandfather was one of the many that lined up on the Oklahoma Border and rode hard to claim a Peice of Oklahoma land. My Dad’s Family still farms that land.

While living in Germany, one of my son's teachers taught history through food and customs. She sent recipes home and the parents made the food on the day she started a new country. I had to make black eyed pea burgers for Africa history period. Lots of work but delicious.
