    I would say Garfield is the opposite of Dilbert in this regard. Because while Dilbert and Scott Adams couldn't be further apart in demeanor, Jim Davis is as inoffensive and vanilla as Garfield itself is. He's just a guy that makes a comic that at best makes you go "haha, oh Garfield, you're so fat and lazy". He doesn't even get offended if someone says Garfield sucks because it's just a paycheck for him at this point, it's why he thinks Garfield Minus Garfield is funnier than his own work.

      Funny story, Jon is based on a character in his prior comic that he made much more like himself. Garfield's Jon is purposefully pathetic and self denigrating because he was bummed about how that comic failed.

    I feel like you can look at the totality of Dilbert as an excellent, real time example of how money and success will turn you into a complete asshole. Dilbert started as a comic strip about how out-of-touch and incompetent corporate leadership (the Pointy Haired Boss) often is when compared to the base level workers doing the actual heavy lifting (Dilbert). But over time, as his comic found success, Scott Adams became less of a Dilbert and more of a Pointy Haired Boss himself, and the comic's focus shifted accordingly. I feel like this is pretty much the natural endpoint of that progression, so this is hardly surprising to me.

      @TeeJayRivers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the point about losing touch with your origins is fair, Dilbert has definitely changed in tone over the years. But it's worth pointing out that Scott Adams never actually worked as an engineer. He worked at as a bank teller first and moved up to bank manager, and then took a management role at Pacific Bell later on, which is where he got his inspiration for the comic.
      Also, Scott Adams has been a crazy asshole for at least a decade and probably a lot longer. Back in 2011 he made some... let's say "bizarre" comments about sexual assault, and when he inevitably caught flak for it, he used fake social media accounts to try and make it look like he had support in his views. And that's just one example.

      there is a thing that happens very often where a creator outgrows editors at the same time they stop having any of the problems normal people have. it's a real nasty 1-2 punch of they don't have a filter anymore, and also they are suddenly much less relatable.
      Heinlein is one of the ur-examples; in his early work there's a little right wing stuff you can easily brush off, and then his later work is a lot of the reason we associate 'libertarian' with 'thinks society is too down on pedophilia.' when your life suddenly lacks the experiences that define everyone else's, all you're left with are your personal pet peeves about society as a source of conflict, and shit gets WEIRD.

    As a (quite long ago) former Dilbert fan, it really has been a trip to see the slow AND rapid descent of the comic and its creator into the Dumbass Hole. There were always signs that Adams wasn't the smartest man in the room who believed he was (his books attempt to paint mindless and obvious actions as clever and witty,) but never to the extreme of the last 6 years. Politics and social media have both sapped his intelligence and bolstered his ego to a frightening degree. Not that it quite matters, as Dilbert as a product fell off right around the time the tie disappeared and was replaced with the id lanyard
    That fucking lanyard, IT'S TO BLAME!

    The line, if anyone is curious to know what was said within the context it was said, was in relation to a poll about the phrase "White lives matter". The poll showed that I think it was something like 60 or 70% of black americans disagreed with that phrase. From this information Mr. Adams took that 60-70% of black people didn't think the lives of white americans mattered. And as a result he stated that white people should avoid black people because black people didn't care about the lives of white people.
    I'm not sure if he's a moron, an out of touch boomer, or an intentionally dense race baiter. Whatever the case, its very weird.

This was before I knew anything about his political beliefs or past actions. I just knew him as Dilbert guy. Anyways, I remember it clearly because there was just something about his tone of voice that really made me feel weird. I don't know how to describe it but his tone just screams "I know everything and no one can correct me. If they do than they're wrong".
