And made a 137mile trip and got 19mpg’s while on cruise control at about 73/75 mph…. Also- when u do these test- you should always clear the system to reset it. Clearing the whole system will reset the system to start fresh. If any ones wondering why I have a 3” x-pipe and 3” mufflers but only running 2.5 exhaust piping connecting it all- talking with my exhaust guy- he said it’s a lot of flow for not being super charged or turbo- and I may loose a bit of bottom end and take off during towing- so keeping the rest of the piping at 2.5 would be the perfect balance of flow and not being over sized. I have no drone inside my cabin, the truck sounds smooth and not crazy loud. With your odo not adjusted You're going a lot faster than 70-75 which will reduce your mpg as well. I am only guessing never buy a pu for good mpg unless its a hybrid or electric! how about a Honda civic!!
So I did the math on 275/65 vs 295/70. The difference in speedometer error (80mph indicated is 84mph actual), means that your odometer is accumulating less mileage than you’re actually covering. The calculated error ends up being 0.9mpg. Whatever mpg you’re calculating you can add 0.9 too.

Thanks for your videos! Up in the air of keeping my current size LT275/70r18 or trying the LT295/70r18. Love the looks of the bigger tires but my current size works well for towing. Also may need to put chains on in the future since moving to Montana. So, I guess I am leaning more towards the smaller tires. Also, I run 47 psi in my tires. Highway/City combo is around 15 mpg. Wind makes a huge difference in fuel economy especially when towing. So, that may have affected your mileage also. Seen as little as 6 mpg towing a travel trailer across Kansas and Oklahoma with a lot of headwind. Could literally see the gas gauge moving!

Recently took a 4 hour road trip with 3 of my buddies. We’re all big dudes. Between us about 900-1000 pounds. I averaged 15.9 mpg. I didn’t use cruise control. I noticed when I put the cruise on it tended to downshift a lot. Next time you road trip try not to use the cruise. You can “control” the downshifting better and get better mpgs.
Hey thanks for watching and subscribing! That’s a great comparison I’m glad to hear your mpg’s! I have heard from some other people I need to not use cruise as well. Not using it I experienced a lot of downshifts too so I totally agree with you!
That is absolutely correct. If you are trying for mpg, get off the cruise. Plus, as a previous commenter, if you didn't have the odometer reprogramed, which they can do, for the larger tires, your milage will not be correct. Additionally, some claim it screws up the transmission shift points which could also contribute to lower MPG. "Not an expert" but i always calculate the tire diameters from the size and compare to oem. Easy to do, especially with a Excel spreadsheet for recording.
I’ve taken a couple 30 mile trips on my 2018 Limited Crewmax all stock... I just got it back in October so I haven’t had the chance to take a long trip yet. On two 30 miles trips on the highway in Pennsylvania, I averaged 19.2, and 17.4 at 70-75 mph.
I've done a fair amount of reading on this as my truck gets around 11.7 combined (mostly highway, and I never use cruise control; personal preference, but in all the vehicles I've owned, I can definitely get better mileage with my foot and judicious use of throttle on hills vs the ecu's method), 6" lift and 35s that was on the truck when I bought it. I know the tires are heavy and they have that 'mud tire' feel when you drive on the highway, by which I mean they grab at every little crack and crevice and can pull the steering wheel out of your hands if you're not paying attention. When they wear out I'm definitely swapping them out for a hybrid tire set, something that rides better on pavement and off-road. I've also looked into re-gearing and have a few places bookmarked that offer sets for the 07-19 model ranges. But yes, as you've now undoubtedly noticed, lifts and tires are not the friend of your wallet for the mpg war. My truck has a 4 inch lift kit, King Shock, With T325/60R20. Lower cover shields, aftermarket air intake (help a little) and a turna cover. My tires are toyo open country (Lightweight compare BF Goodrich and others) I didn’t use cruise control to the reason that the truck doesn’t know what gear it want to be in. It can be flat surface road and can be at 6 gear then downshift to 5 gear for no reason. Stay like that for a while and at time goes into 4 gear. I thinking of going to the dealer unless ya tell me it normal. During the trip on my way back I was in a strong rain storm. For a while I was going around 55mph to 60mph. That might of increase my MPG. With all the item listed I think it help to get a better MPG. And I did this around trip in 26 hours. Only stop for petrol. The cover shield I made to help with air drag and protection. When out of warranty I will do a tune to get a better MPG.

I have a 2016 tundra crewmax lifted on 22 inch wheels and 35 inch tires, I've taken a few 250 plus mile trips averaging around 12 mpg. I tried using cruise control but noticed it affected my mpg to be honest, i also wonder due to the bigger tire and speedometer not being accurate if it isn't really the actual mpg displayed. I will be taking it on a 800 mile trip one way in a few days, im going to try and tally it up using my receipts and a calculator lol.
Hey thanks for that info! I have heard the cruise really decreases the MPG's as well. I tallied mine using the receipt and odometer so I know that's more accurate but I did tally using my trip meter which could be a little off as well. So use your GPS mileage agains your gallons at the pump and I think that is the most accurate. Thanks again for watching!
So, do you think the fuel mileage is more affected by the weight of the tires or the size? Thinking of Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in the P rated 295/70r18 which is only 50 pounds compared to LT tires which usually 60-70 pounds in the same size. Factory tires are about 40 lbs. Being that you did this all interstate makes me think it is sizing not the weight. Thanks for the information.
I think it all goes hand in hand to be honest. I put a lift on it so naturally the aerodynamics are impacted as well as the tread pattern of an aggressive all terrain is going to have more rolling resistance than the stock Michelin’s that were on it. Im sure you’d be better off with the P rated vs LT because weight does play a roll but I just don’t know which impacts it most, ya know? Excited for you to get new tires! It really makes the truck looks so much cooler! Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll subscribe!

That’s awesome man! Sounds like you have a pretty sweet build too! I definitely think cruise control hurt me because like you said it likes to drop a gear to keep the speed up! Thanks for your post! I’m going to try it without cruise in a couple weeks and see how I do!
The bigger tires look cool, but not on your wallet. I'll keep my stock combination.
Smiles per gallon :)
The Gas mpg sucks, but it looks good!
People claim to get 12-13mpg hauling a 30ft tt with 35’s. I get about 7-9 :).
Haha sounds about right!
I have a 33’ travel trailer. I get 6-9mpg. Sucks.
Re-Gear and you'll get your fuel milage back to almost what you had and the performance of your truck will be so much better.
What gearing is best? The tundra comes standard with 4.30 which allows for plenty of power but lacks the fuel economy obviously
@@kccreations5945 I'm not sure but there are some videos out there. I remember seeing one where the guy that did it was very happy with the results. Post the question on Tundras.com. I'd be interested in knowing what it would be too. Great videos too Austin!
I can’t remember where I saw it but I typed in tundra re gear and came across a short video of a shop that re gears tundra. The guy said he puts 5.13 in if your running 37’s and 4.88 for 35’s.
Yeah this is the most inaccurate video. You measured on direction. You need to do the trip twice to actually get a clue..... fail
I got the same results both ways, thanks for being so kind and watching!
Did 34s kill my MPG. Ummm yeah. Wtf. Of course.
