I rented a low mileage 2019 or 2020 Escape and took it round trip from Phoenix to Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri. I was very impressed with it. It holds its’ own on Interstates next to the big rigs. As much as we mock at the overdose of electronics, all the ones on board with this one worked and actually made for better safety. Took many hours to find them all and get the radio to work with an iPhone. That was the biggest challenge, but when it’s all synced up, it was a great vehicle.
I drive a 2012 ford escape limited . It's the last model of escape that was an actual SUV before ford started making them all crossovers. I wish they would go back to the old body style.
Let me know how it’s holding up now. I think Scotty changed his mind since. But the titanium escape is interesting. One thing I see is you can’t replace the battery easily.
I have a 2014 Escape, spec out exactly like that one with 288K miles. Oil every 3k, replaced turbo, and rebuilt suspension. Runs and drives like a new one.
Here in South Africa, they're known as the "Kuga", unfortunately, they're also known for having turbo and gearbox issues, and even more known for catching fire, since Ford South Africa ignored a recall notice that was sent out for them years ago.
@@reinardharmse4375 same here. They're junk. Done 6 trans on those this year alone. Also one with a coolant valve issue that caused an overheat condition and melted the engine harness at the crank sensor.🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
my wife just got a 2014 escape titanium w the 2.0 Ecoboost, she loves it. the 1.6 had a timing belt, the 2.0 has a timing chain. I. glad the one she wanted has a chain
I bought the 2018 S model, which is the base model but it has a 2.5 L and no turbo, which means it will probably last longer and so far, it gets the job done. No luxury but for the pace it has, I think it's a good option. Btw, no turbo lag! 👌🏼
I'm very picky with Fords. I dont like any of the newer ones, but there's a certain few older Fords I like. I also like the Fusions but its unfortunate that they're discontinued. My list goes Toyota, Mazda, and Honda for 2013 up. 2013 down I wouldn't buy anything other than Toyota or Honda, but its not like older Mazdas or Subarus are bad either. Newer Subarus are electrical nightmares, and they have horrible craftsmanship from the factory. They also use very cheap materials, so there's really dumb things that break that are a pain to fix for something that shouldn't have been broken in the first place
JoeAceJR you have to be crazy throwing mazda in there. Honda and Toyota both are great when it comes to manuals. I've had 21 cars all Hondas only 3 automatics
@@eln0n01 Newer Mazdas are not bad at all, and are probably better than newer Hondas. Unlike Toyota or Honda, Mazda actually has some personality and isn't just... a car. You don't feel dead inside when driving a Mazda. While they won't last as long as Toyotas, I think its a very good compromise to buy a Mazda instead of a Toyota
I thought they stopped making the 1.6 in 2014 or 15? Then started using the 1.5. With the 4 wheel drive that should have a 2.0. If just front wheel drive it would have a 1.5.
I have a 2006 Ford Escape it’s 14 years old and gets its regular oil changes every 3 months still going strong 💪🏽 olny thing I changed on it was the radio system to a 7 inch touchscreen with apple CarPlay and android auto with a backup camera
Cost of staying in motels while driving across the country was outrageous. I am sorry I didn’t realize that it was so expensive to stay in what are essentially 3 star rooms. I would have slept in the car.
"I just did the opposite. Love my 17' Explorer. The Rav 4 lost a transmission at 40,000 miles. And yes, normal wear and tear. Second Rav 4 to do this. No Toyota's for me again.
Surprised you didn't comment on the battery location. Just had to swap out the battery in mine. You have to remove either the air box or the windshield wipers and cowl to get at it. Those stores that usually change batteries for you if you buy one of theirs laughed at me and said no way.
Our 2017 Escape Titanium was only a couple thousand more than the SE you tested, just under $30K fully loaded, FWD. Unless you live up north, you don’t need the cost and lower mpg of the AWD. Ours has the 2.0 Ecoboost which has a lot more power than the 1.6...great pickup for a little crossover. Zero problems in 84K miles. Seats could be a little comfier on a long drive. All in all, a really nice product from Ford.
@@SuperAgentMan there is a case in court in South Africa about an Indian man who died after the car went ablaze after it came back from a dealership for the recall. Apparently they have to put in a new head gasket to fix the issue
I have a 2019 Escape and it's been a pretty good car. Comfortable, easy to drive, and nice looking. I will say though, one and a half years in I have already had to have a new APIM (infotainment computer) placed in. It didn't cost me anything and the dealership gave me a loaner for the time it was being serviced but still.... Its a 2019 c'mon. Other than that it's been a lovely car
I had a 2017 SE Escape with the 2.0 L motor. That was a very quick suv for the money . My wife has a 430bmw & she would laugh when I would get on it to merger etc. Because it was so fast. In case any body is wondering, I would get about 28mpg on average. Never has a single problem in 80k miles. Just changed the oil. Still had original tires and breaks. Would recommend this suv to anybody. I would of bought the new one, but I needed something bigger.

Actually, I got to thank Scotty for this one. I've been wondering if my pump is bad (posted a video previously) and I was wondering. So, looks like the "wheeeeee wheeeeee" is normal in my case.
Ford makes decent quality vehicles. I've owned several over the years: a Fairmont, an Escort, a Mustang, and two Explorers. No, they aren't luxury or perfect vehicles. Yes, I've had a few minor recalls/repairs here and there. But I've never replaced an engine or a transmission. To me, that's pretty good value for the money. My region has historically been a GM/Delco employee area. I hear the old "Fix Or Repair Daily" and "Found On Road Dead" sayings all the time. I just chuckle. It's been more like a minor repair every six to eight years for me. I put more stock in my real world experience over their propaganda. EDIT: I forgot to mention - I've always owned normally aspirated and standard fuel injection (or carb'd) engines. No turbos or GDI for me, so that's probably a factor in my luck.
@J B Yeah, I never really thought about how much more wear a turbocharger causes over time. But now that I've watched Scotty for a while, I get it. I definitely don't want to roll the dice on one. I tend to keep my vehicles a long while, and turbos seem problematic in the long run.
@J B Right on. My current Explorer is a 4.6 liter V8 XLT bought new in 2002 (actually, a dealer's daily driver with 1800 miles on it, but counted as new for the in-service date). I also had to replace a couple of coil packs a while ago (easily done myself). It had an oxygen sensor go bad while still under warranty. There was also one recall - something to do with the cruise control electronics. Other than those things, just brakes, tires, a couple of batteries, and normal maintenance. All in all, solid vehicle. It's served me well for 18 years. It's not a gas miser, but no V8 is. It's also got the towing package with the 3.73 rear, so that's a factor in economy. But I'm not complaining. Plenty of power and pretty comfy ride. (Edit: 4.6 not 4.2)
Daniel I also had a 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer and LOVED it....had 237,000 miles on it (new transmission tho). It was great here in the mountains of Colorado, great size, power, etc. I would still be driving it except it got totaled when I got slammed in the rear by an ATF agent!
Assuming my old used 11yo Ford Escape doesn't rust away first, and I only put 2-3Kmi a year on it these days, I plan on driving it to my grave, because I sure don't want any newer vehicles.
I have a 2015 Ford Fusion with 128k on it. Original wheel bearings and none of my plastic vents make noises. I also change the transmission fluid every 60k. I have the 2.5 engine. Solid built
Got me an 2013 escape sel. And got 84xxx miles and it never idles weirdly or any of that. But I got the Fwd and gotta say once I straight piped it, thing idles even better and accelerates even better. I know it’s not a good idea. But the car overall performs so much better loving it and no issues at all
I was always told turbo vehicles should get an oil change every 3,000 miles period. I can see this as an issue where oil companies state that their oil is good for 10,000/ or one year.
my grandma had a 2013 ford taurus 2.0 4-cyl ecoboost, 133k miles and no issues with the turbo. it's interesting to see some people have a load of issues and others no issues.
@John Wyatt true story. My EX wife, mother to my son, (she could not cook as well), but that is a different story..... 15 years ago when I met her, she had a V6 Mustang. It stopped running. I pop the hood latch. She asks whats that? I reply what is what? She says that door? She was talking about the hood! She bought the car three years prior and never opened the hood. Put gas in, turn key. Poor car.
We had base model 2017 Escapes as fleet vehicles at a former employer. A majority of them had misfire issues that the dealer couldn't fix, and a couple had their transmissions go before 100k. Nice interior, but rough ride.
Great day to be alive. We live in the age of yesterdays tomorrow lands. Henry Ford made a truck/car and everyone else tried to do the same. Ford made the best reservation puddle jumpers we ever owned n drove. Preventative Maintenance is the key.
If I was going to live in a vehicle, other than an actual motorhome, I'd have to choose a conversion van of some sort (Ford or Chevy - doesn't matter to me), they can be found pretty cheap 15 to 20 years old. and reliable.
Scotty looking on the burned out side, tired needing a break. As a tech I would not recommend thiese with the 1.6l as they tend to blow head gaskets between cyl two and three. Done three in a week just testing them with a pressure test and coolant was found in the cylinders. First sign of it is when it is first started in the morning with a noticeable misfire that clears up after a few mins.
If the wiring is as thin and crappy as my Ford Focus had, I would avoid it. Every wire leading through the conduit from the roof to the hatch had dried and cracked insulation that allowed the wires to short, blowing the brake light fuses and not allowing the car to even start. Car was only about 8 years old with 60,000 miles. That in addition to other issues made sure I'll never buy another Ford again.
BTW, that is prior to the 2017 refresh, no newer than a 2016 model. Anyway, I leased a 2017 Escape Titanium with 2.0 Twin Scroll EB. Quick as hell. Solid transmission, kept it for 31k and 3 years. Was worried about turbo long term so I turned it in. Was happy with it.
One thing about Fords I've noticed from last few years is they all handle well, even cheap end models, one thing they nail is the actual driving aspect
Scotty, are you sure that the Escape is a 2017 model? I have a 2017 Escape SE and it comes with a 1.5L engine not the 1.6L engine. By the way I took it to the dealership fo scheduled maintenance and to check out an engine light. The dealership got back to me saying that I need a new engine as coolant was determined to be leaking into the cylinders. This is covered under the powertrain warranty.
rickrayn, we have the same car. Ours didn’t have the issue you described, but there was a recall for it. Ours has had an issue with the undercarriage panels rattling. The little clips don’t hold them in place very well and at speed, they rattle. Good luck with the engine.
It is definitely pre 2017, as the exterior and interior both got updated for 2017, and as you said, the 1.6L was replaced with a 1.5L. I've heard about a lot of issues with the 1.5, to the point that I feel like I dodged a bullet going for the updated 2.0 in my 2017 Escape Titanium. 62k miles and it doesn't leak anything to anywhere it isn't supposed to. :)
Would love to see a Scotty x Sandy Munro crossover episode! Scotty talking about some of the flaws in some models and/or brand with Sandy and just talk about both their experiences with Dodge. Really want to buy a 2021/2022 Dodge Wagoneer!
Sometimes you hit the mechanical lottery. Had a 2006 Pontiac G6 V6, it had 280,000+ miles. Drove it like MAD, in 2017 it had finally succumbed to rust from flood water. It was FULLY functional except the damn electric power steering. It was TOTAL crap and never worked right. Had 2 GM dealers and my local mechanic replace the darn thing 3 times. GM did it for free, mechanic did it labour free. JUNK. Least reliable car I've ever owned was a 1995 Nissan Maxima SE, holy cow that thing broke down A LOT. How can a pre-Renault Nissan be so bad? The lottery works both ways sometimes. 🤣
We have a 2014 Ford Focus with 76,000 miles and a 2014 Ford Escape that now has 101,000 miles. Our luck with the quality has been the exact opposite of what Scotty describes. I've owned the Focus since it was 14 months old with 25,000 miles. No major issues. We bought the Escape with 68,000 miles at 3 years old, and the transmission went out a year later with 73,000 miles on it. Now, the Escape has a coolant leak that we haven't been able to figure out (going on 3 months). Meanwhile, the Focus is still reliable. The flip side of this of course is that the Escape has a much cushier ride than the Focus does on the road. However, the Focus has more power for its size. (1.6L motor in the Escape, 2.0 L motor in the Focus). I just wanted to tell my story to say, don't believe everything you hear from the masses. I find the Focus to be the better buy and a more reliable car overall.
I have a ‘15 Escape that has 50,000. The AC went earlier in the year that was covered by my Geico warranty. ($250 deductible). My wife drives it and loves it. Perfect size. I’m hoping for 150,000. Change oil every 5000 and just did drain and fill in the transmission. I’ll do it again at 80000
Lol you got me excited. Im getting a lot of practice converting vehicles into campers. When i saw my favorite mechanic with a car camper, it almost blew my mind.
I won't buy other ford escape. My transmission "started" going at 97K ish miles. I caught it early and have been adding Anti wear fluid too it. Held up ok so far. And around 86K miles, my heated partly failed. When I use my heat, it eats through my coolant like it's soda. The evap coil is not sealed any more and doesn't reclaim the coolant that's gas/vapor form.
Scotty checking it out using the diagnostic computer read out: Started scrolling down... "So far there's no yellow... hmm... maybe I'll just FAST FWD this!"🤣 Subtle humor that cracks you up!
I used to drive one. It was a 15’ escape Titanium. Made it to 120k before I traded it in for an 03 4runner with about the same mileage. It (the escape) never had any problems or issues, but I assume it’s nearing the point where it will have some.
Juan Rodriguez No, because the 4Runner better suited my lifestyle. That’s the main reason. Also I’d gamble that the 4Runner, while older, may last longer without real issues with some basic maintenance. But again the main reason is my lifestyle. I could’ve made the ford work but I was getting a good deal on the yota so I went through with it.
2004 2.3 420 000 km always used penrite 5-40 full synthetic replaced sensors. Soon to replace struts shocks. Used penrite fuel additive cat cleaner. Car went so fast broke timing chain. Car I die with.

My wife has one of these, it goes like a go kart, just remember to disable the auto start stop feature Everytime you start it.

@@delcodriver Yep, most newer Fords are notorious for gearbox and turbo failures around here.
It's made for bike racks or a storage carrier. I won't even haul anything with my v6 suv that can tow 5000 lbs. That's what v8 trucks are for TOWING.
my wife just got a 2014 escape titanium w the 2.0 Ecoboost, she loves it. the 1.6 had a timing belt, the 2.0 has a timing chain. I. glad the one she wanted has a chain
I bought the 2018 S model, which is the base model but it has a 2.5 L and no turbo, which means it will probably last longer and so far, it gets the job done. No luxury but for the pace it has, I think it's a good option. Btw, no turbo lag! 👌🏼
I love ford's. If I have to pick a third option besides hondas and toyota. I'll pick a Ford anytime.
Yeah those a great cars too.
Ford LTDs were well built in the 70's
JoeAceJR you have to be crazy throwing mazda in there. Honda and Toyota both are great when it comes to manuals. I've had 21 cars all Hondas only 3 automatics
@@eln0n01 Newer Mazdas are not bad at all, and are probably better than newer Hondas. Unlike Toyota or Honda, Mazda actually has some personality and isn't just... a car. You don't feel dead inside when driving a Mazda. While they won't last as long as Toyotas, I think its a very good compromise to buy a Mazda instead of a Toyota
I have a 2014 Ford Escape and it's been great.
Scotty, that's a 2016 or earlier. I have a 2017 and my wife has a 2018 and we love them. We both have the 2 liter turbo.
He finally did a review of the escape!
Ayyyy Scotty doing the van life🤙
I just got rid of my ford and bought a Rav4. No more fords for me.
You joined the club.
Best decision
Then Scotty's sale pitch for Toyotas sold itself 😂
My aunt sold her RAV4 for a Ford escape and she likes the Ford escape way more.
I had an 08 Buick rendezvous loved the amount of room of interior too bad the engine was crap. Now have 16 escape and hate it but runs great.
They are called Ford Kuga in Europe and Africa and have been catching fire literally when they age because of the ecoboost engine. Look it up.
There was already a recall on this. This only pertains to the 2013 model 1.6l EcoBoosts
Focuses were recalled in the uk for this
Then get one with the 2.5L engine. No turbo!
How is a vehicle good when a major component goes out in less than 2 years?
I had a 2017 SE Escape with the 2.0 L motor. That was a very quick suv for the money . My wife has a 430bmw & she would laugh when I would get on it to merger etc. Because it was so fast. In case any body is wondering, I would get about 28mpg on average. Never has a single problem in 80k miles. Just changed the oil. Still had original tires and breaks. Would recommend this suv to anybody. I would of bought the new one, but I needed something bigger.
my aunt has a 2014 titanium with the 2.0. 156k miles no issues my 2017 SE 2.0, 71k no issues. they are great crossovers

Actually, I got to thank Scotty for this one. I've been wondering if my pump is bad (posted a video previously) and I was wondering. So, looks like the "wheeeeee wheeeeee" is normal in my case.
In Seattle the fuel pump sounds different, it goes Reeeee, Reeeeee
2013 ford escape SE 1.6L ecoboost . 192000+ miles still running pretty solid
The added weight of all the wood affecting acceleration and shocks.
Assuming my old used 11yo Ford Escape doesn't rust away first, and I only put 2-3Kmi a year on it these days, I plan on driving it to my grave, because I sure don't want any newer vehicles.
"REV UP YOUR ENGINES!" *PINS IT DOWN THE STREET IN MOVING TRUCK*

Congratulations on your new home scotty!!!
But the car overall performs so much better loving it and no issues at all
3:23 Live Free or Die - Scotty, you are the man! American dream
I work at a dealership detailing cars and we got one of these in on a trade but it has about 111,000 miles and a blown turbo
Must have rarely gotten oil changes, the turbos are pretty reliable on these
Probably abused by driving hard and forgetting the maintenance part
Poor car.
I've got a '19 Escape SEL, 1.5l - 4 awd. Seems to be bulletproof. Very reliable.
I have 2 2016s Chevys both luckily have the 6 speeds it’s been holding up good. One has 135k miles and the other 42k miles.
My brother drives a Ford Escape. It's good to know they are built well.
We had base model 2017 Escapes as fleet vehicles at a former employer. A majority of them had misfire issues that the dealer couldn't fix, and a couple had their transmissions go before 100k. Nice interior, but rough ride.
Texas will miss you Scotty!
Hi Scotty, How about the 2013 Ford Escape?
Great day to be alive. We live in the age of yesterdays tomorrow lands.
Henry Ford made a truck/car and everyone else tried to do the same.
Ford made the best reservation puddle jumpers we ever owned n drove. Preventative Maintenance is the key.
If I was going to live in a vehicle, other than an actual motorhome, I'd have to choose a conversion van of some sort (Ford or Chevy - doesn't matter to me), they can be found pretty cheap 15 to 20 years old. and reliable.
scotty for president! love this guy to bits and i am chinese from singapore
Always hated the stiff noisy ride and weezy turbos in these modern Escapes.
What’s wrong with the turbo?
One thing about Fords I've noticed from last few years is they all handle well, even cheap end models, one thing they nail is the actual driving aspect
My 2005 Ford Escape XLT with the V6 got me to 265,000 miles , still going strong . (rebuilt transmission at 165,000)
Be mindful of the coolant intrusion issue, also the PTU gear oil, it's not lifetime! Change it every 30k.
I am pretty sure it is a 2015
It is definitely pre 2017, as the exterior and interior both got updated for 2017, and as you said, the 1.6L was replaced with a 1.5L.

All that wood makes it worse. There’s no space. U can live there much better without all that wood.
Wood for storage. Where to put stuff when it's time to sleep?
I like the old ones with the column shifter.
I don't know but me,like better the old boxy Escape V6!
I just bought an 05 escape. I love the body of the older ones
Can't wait for part 2 of your history of Mazda video!
Scotty does give a big shock to old engines. He floors every car gas pedal. Id never do that to my car.
If it can't take it, he's gonna break ir.
Owned a 2012 ford focus, and currently own a 2014 ford escape, and I have fallen in love with fords now, so I’m planning on buying a newer escape now🙂
Scotty living in a Ford Escape 😂 Good one Scotty 👍
I have a ‘15 Escape that has 50,000. The AC went earlier in the year that was covered by my Geico warranty. ($250 deductible). My wife drives it and loves it. Perfect size. I’m hoping for 150,000. Change oil every 5000 and just did drain and fill in the transmission. I’ll do it again at 80000
Lol you got me excited. Im getting a lot of practice converting vehicles into campers. When i saw my favorite mechanic with a car camper, it almost blew my mind.

Yep
I won't buy other ford escape. My transmission "started" going at 97K ish miles. I caught it early and have been adding Anti wear fluid too it. Held up ok so far.
And around 86K miles, my heated partly failed. When I use my heat, it eats through my coolant like it's soda.
The evap coil is not sealed any more and doesn't reclaim the coolant that's gas/vapor form.

I’ve already bought my vehicle. I’m subscribed for the hijinks
Its a good starter car I got a 2011 its my first car got it for 800 its good just shakes a lil at a stop light
I used to drive one. It was a 15’ escape Titanium. Made it to 120k before I traded it in for an 03 4runner with about the same mileage. It (the escape) never had any problems or issues, but I assume it’s nearing the point where it will have some.
why? because its a ford? toyota isnt all that.
