You commented about talking too much. Oh my! What you say has a point and valuable information. Watching other videos drives me crazy when people like to hear the sound of their own voices. They repeat the same info over and over. I was a speech teacher. You do a beautiful job just talking in a conversational manner to us. You do not assume we a dumb. Thank you for all the info. I am 71 and every time I watch a video I have renewed energy to go out and finish projects.

Carolyn Imboden same here!!! I've never not been interested in what she has to say! She's very well spoken & doesn't say "uhh" or "ummm"......Im not a speech teacher, but I was taught at a very young age that it's tacky to say uhh & umm in the middle of a speech or conversation & when I hear someone doing that, it drives me nuts! 🤣

It would bother me to no end because when I'm out gardening I'm dripping in sweat and look a right horror and you always look as fresh as can be. My husband and I painted our gazebo black!
It's perfection, the plants look more vibrant and colorful and the finish is demi matte, so you can still see texture of the wood and the lines. And it matches our landscape perfectly.

I love the gazebo the way it is..it's lovely in the winter and summer with all the beautiful green around it
It's so warm and inviting, my favorite spot on your property
Your always talking about winter interest...you paint it a light color it'll disappear...but that's just me , too much white is boring to me .
The white house with all the black detail, is very lovely and stately and all the buildings matching is nice way to tie everything together but its nice to have one little special place

I think you should totally do the espaliered apple trees on the arch. Complete the childhood dream, lol. You don't need to have lots of acreage to have an orchard. I have less than 1/2 an acre and have apple, peach, plum, cherry, almond and pear trees. If you espalier a lot of them it is very doable. I set the trees in a line 12' apart with 4x4 posts between strung with wire cable, and have been able to fit all of the trees and get plenty of fruit for me each year. There are so many varieties that are dwarf or smaller sized, now, for smaller yards. There is one spot in your yard - can't think of exactly where it's located - but it has very little planted in it and is surrounded by a hedge with a building at one end - that big grassy area would be perfect for an orchard...

Laura you holiday paint the gazebo the same as your vegetable garden fence and arbors. A dark color would bear the weight of the mansard roof and make your plantings in front of it really pop, especially the greens. I am always so impressed with how much you do at your home and in your community. You are always very inspiring!

  • @luisvillar4299
    @luisvillar4299 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Color for your gazebo ( which will be my inspiration [that roofline!], for when I build mine halfway across the globe ), merits a Nantucket gray. Hopefully you guys may consider bulking up the posts slightly to balance the weight of the roof. The top-heaviness of this structure is perfect. But I feel the posts kind of needs a little heft. Your videos and this community is my family’s guilty pleasure. Such great ideas.
NOTE: I am literally in the early stages of building my family’s garden. You have given me the confidence to build my own drip irrigation system. I am doing it all by myself on our 7000 square feet of planting space. Thanks again. 😀

Hey Laura, ..... I’m an interior designer,..and just wanted to encourage you, that your roof on the gazebo is not too dark to handle having a white body. To add a bit of visual “beef” having the posts and top caps in black would be very beautiful as well. I think it’s important to have all the buildings the same colour. Love your channel, love your yard, love your family! Thanks for what you do, I’ve learned so much !

Laura, re: Painting gazebo color... A soft creamy white/very pale soft yellow... would look beautiful! It would accent the greenery, flowers and blue sky! It would be inviting and look cottage and cozy. It would be a step away from the white and not Stark to be an eyesore. Happy painting! Thank you for your inspiration and garden love.

I live in a Victorian on 15 acres with a 17 thousand ft barn indoor riding ring. I am a painting maniac. We do everything thing our selves. I think that you may regret painting your arbour especially with the roof being in shakes. Regardless of the colour your roof will still make it look rustic. I like the colour with the foliage. Your property is stunning.

Soft green or white for the gazebo I'm thinking so it blends in better with your home and landscape. I had no idea you were thinking of painting it but in the back of my mind I always thought it wasn't fitting in as it is with your style. I'm sure whichever you choose will look wonderful. And on the red color I am the same I prefer pastels but I have seen Hot or jewel garden beds and they are beautiful too, so maybe next time you design a bed maybe? :) Have a great weekend!

In a few videos you have asked about the use of multicolor or just solids; my personal favorite is one color in an area, then a completing color next to it and so on. (Maybe use the color wheel scheme.) Until the last area or one the family uses the most, then maybe an assortment of beautiful colors. Oh, and also a place for greens only. (for relaxation, peace and nature). But your gardens are beautiful as well. Whatever you chose I’m sure will be gorgeous.

I screen shot your gazebo, with my tablet, and then proceeded to color the gazebo white, then I tried rich brown and lasting light gray.
In order to see what the end result would look like with each color.
To my surprise , I thought the white really looked best !
Try a screen shot and see for yourself.
The white will match your other buildings, making a theme, and continuity with all the buildings on your property.
The white really popped on the bottom and added visual strength, and the tiny dormers painted white,
really tied the the top with the bottom together.
I really love the texture roof shingles,
with adding white paint the gazebo looked very inviting, fresh and cottage looking yet stately.
    Try it yourself and see.

Hi Laura and Aaron! I enjoy your Q&A videos, but wish Aaron would have been included in front of the camera, too. Honestly, I love the Gazebo just the way it is. Just look at the shot @ 7:49 and see how beautiful it is as a backdrop to the plants in front of it. I really don't see the need for it to "blend in", it's a beautiful statement piece. If you really don't like the color, a different shade of brown stain would still look good, but I wouldn't paint it. As others have said, take a photo and try the different colors. Then maybe put them up for everyone to see and vote on? Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to more tours.

No white on the gazebo, you're right, anything but white, green or gray or decking red, like Maine houses with that type of roofing! I enjoyed watching this video, loved the planters - they look great at the front of the house and came out really pretty!

  • @StudioEmmy
    @StudioEmmy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Laura. I took a break from my gardening just now and enjoyed watching this video. My recommendation for your gazebo color is medium to dark gray that is similar to tree bark. As a quilter, I learned to squint at a landscape to see it for its colors and shades and hues. This helps me when I look at my garden spaces from a distance to see where they may need something I can't see when I'm looking at them without squinting...if that makes sense! Good luck. Sometimes decisions are so hard to make!

I have an all white and green section in my garden. It is gorgeous. My accent color is purple though very little of it. The hosta blooms are purple so that made my decision for the accent color. In that area are hosta with white accent leaves, solid green leaves, or two tone green leaves. There are some silver leaf plants too. You have such a big garden you can have what I like to call rooms and lots of them. My garden it small compared to yours but I do have rooms where it is different around each corner and side of my home yet they all tie together since I will add a plant or two the same from the last room. Why not a "White-Green" room. I love your little family garden show. How lucky you are to live so close to such a large part of your family. My only wish is that you would keep us better updated on the progress of your projects. Also I went back to watch a lot of your earlier videos and I love your small projects that you did. My favorite was the 3 urn challenge. What fun. Keep up the great work and keep that husband of yours busy.

Thanks for the Bonide app suggestion! I love the simplicity and peacefulness of the green and white garden. As far as the color of the gazebo...given your love of cooler colors, not wanting it to pop out of the landscape too much, and the heavy roof of the structure, I would go with a soft green or taupe. Thanks again for all of the great information you share!!!

I think your hair would look cute up in a messy bun. I agree with others that I always think about how hot I would be with my hair down in the hot summer time. You are beautiful and your hair is beautiful in your every day style.
Thanks for the app from Bonide. I am sure it will come in handy.

I agree with another of your subscribers, I know there are apps out there that let you see what a room or structure will look like if you paint it a color you think you might like. Sometimes you think a color would look great only to be disappointed when you finish painting it. It’s going to be really important to get the right color for your gazebo. Your not going to want it to stand out like a sore thumb, but your also not going to want it to disappear either. A color app would help you make the perfect choice, your choice.

I vote to leave the gazebo a darker colour. White or such will make it less cozy, and too bright.

I always watch your videos and think to myself "I wish I could look that cute while gardening " Even after I wipe away sweat I'm still a disaster lol. Good thing I don't post gardening videos because I'd scare off most people from gardening

I'm in the white and green camp. So pretty and cool.
I think a dark stain, black or walnut, would look great on the gazebo. Similar to what you have on the garden fence.

You can paint the gazebo with night purple with silvery tone, the roof can be white or gold✨✨✨✨✨

This was fun. I agree, keep that new area next to the drive, in whites and maybe a few pale pastel colors. It is very cool and restful to look at in the videos. I understand about your hair! LOL I have always had short hair because I am not a hair person and have tons and tons of hair! (Even at 71!) As for color on the gazebo, well I think the color would be more to your liking if it were a pale green and use a stain! Otherwise, I can guarantee you will be forever painting the darn thing. Thanks so much for sharing. You give so much information in these, I have to save them for later viewing. LOL

Great Q&A, especially the Bonide app., just passed that along. I like the white & green garden idea, an think the other side with the urns would be a nice area for a meadow look, an would bring in the pollinators for the veg garden as well. As for the gazebo color, I like green, it is my fave color after all. Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the new area.

First off, that app is awesome and I am definitely going to download it! Second, I feel like almost everyone who asked questions must be newbies to the channel lol. You have specifically made videos about nearly everything that was asked or else answered those same questions in other Q & A's. Thank you to you and Aaron for all your hard work in making these videos! Very inspirational!

My vote for gazebo paint color would be a mossy green. I think that would look amazing....and I just love moss green. It would blend into the landscape, but would definitely not take away from the house or any of the other outbuildings.
Ooooo, or maybe a dark blueish grayish color would be nice too!

I am glad to here you say that the more toad, snakes, and good bugs mean your garden is healthy. My granddaughter go out after dark and walk around my house and catch and release toad. One evening we had over a dozen. When I am mowing and gardening I will see lots of baby toad. I also notice this year a lot of young praying mantis along with adults. They scare me when they fly or move, but I am so glad to see them. How are your honey bees doing?

    Ginger: -
I live in the tropics where ginger is pretty much a staple. We get a "thumb" [yes that is what they are called], from our grocery store... what we look for is young, plump, slightly pinkish thumbs with little [small sugar bead size] nubs coming off it, these shall be the new shoots. We plant into rich soil [we use the stuff out of of the compost bin and hook coop], about 10-15cm deep. We do grow all year round because of our climate, but the general rule of thumb [no pun intended] is plant late winter - mid-spring and harvest six to seven months later once the stems start looking a little sad [in other words not so tropical or lush]. We have a section of our veggie patch dedicated to herbs, but you may want a substantial size pot/planter to allow for the maximum spread [galangal grows downwards as fingers].

I love your idea of a soft dove gray, like the color cedar shingles get over time...something that would go with the roof but be a few shades lighter. I think green wouldn’t provide enough contrast with what you have going around it. Just MHO! But I’d love for you to do a video about how you decide!! Love your channel 😊
