I tried mixing vinegar, epsom salt and dawn dish soap in a sprayer and it actually worked to kill the grass and weeds around my fence line. It worked in one day! I didn’t want to spray anything harsh like roundup. If anyone is interested the recipe is 1 gallon of vinegar, 1.5 cups epsom salt, 2 tbsp dawn. You have to stir it well to dissolve the salt so that it doesn’t clog your sprayer.

I’ve found this recipe years ago and it really works. A trick I found is saturating down to the roots to keep it away until next season. One and done.
I've never had a problem with insects in the garden. I have been feeding the birds for 30 years and there are a lot around so I think they take care of the insects.
A lot of people don't care for skunks and raccoons but they eat a lot of insects as well.
Same here. I see the birds in my veggie garden all the time. I have very few problems with insects.

Me too! Sorry to hit the unlike button! I have never used any chemicals either - especially today with the neonics that kill the pollinators and the toxicity a lot of them have to mammals! My father was an organic gardener 60 yrs ago with huge garden and orchard and we never had insects or disease but lots of bees, birds, skunks, raccoons, and possums!
The raccoons in my area like to eat the plants roots. Will encourage the birds and skunks for the birds but the raccoons can stay away!
@Stephen Murphy me too so all the wildlife come here because they know it's healthy. I learn to live with them and I can make compromises if necessary.

Usually by the end of August, I let my chickens out into the gardens and my veggie garden. Things are winding down and they do such a great job of picking through and finding bugs and bug eggs, that I usually don’t have many insect problems from year to year. Plus they are fertilizing and turning over the dirt for me, love my girls!!

Good job, Laura. Thanks for the info. That battery-operated sprayer seems great. It's also nice to know there's an organic option other than the harmful, synthetic poisons (yes, Monsanto [now owned by Bayer], we're looking at you).
This year we bought a new house with a neglected garden and patio - lots of weeds! Because of both financial reasons and being scared to use many commercial herbicides, I have been using white vinegar with a touch of dish soap for weeded areas in garden beds or areas were grass is encroaching into a garden bed. Then for our patio/driveway/pathway areas I add a good amount of salt to the vinegar mixture and that both kills the weeds and then makes sure the ground in those areas is not ideal for plants to grow. I have been so pleased and blown away with the results, particularly because of the price point and the fact that I dont have to worry about environmental damage or danger to my doggie!
That’s all I ever use. Dish Soap is very important. It adheres the vinegar to the leaves. Saturating the roots helps it work longer. Applying in direct sun and heat you’ll see them dead in a couple of hours. So glad there’s others who are environmental conscience.
Can you please tell me the amounts you use? We have chickens and are next to a creek, so we are reluctant to use commercial weed killer. Thank you
@@marygibbons2263 Super simple -- I use a gallon pump sprayer, so I buy a gallon of white vinegar, pour it in and add just an eye-balled squirt of dish soap! It's just pure, undiluted vinegar from the store, so you could use any spray bottle you have. If also adding salt for a patio/hardscape area, I just eyeball that as well (I would guess I use at least 3/4 of a cup), as long as it is super salty because the goal is to literally make the ground uninhabitable for plants.

Environmentally friendly, for the most part :). Careful spraying it near planting areas, it will kill the microbes & other useful biology. It acidifies the soil which is why it kills everything.

I've always just sprayed my plants with soapy water, a trick my papa taught me. The bugs and bunnies taste the soap and stop eating the plant.
Both him and I both have very healthy gardens because of it

You can buy a hand air pump duster for applying your dust. Under $20. Cuts down on over application and wasting product. Dust goes into a plastic or metal jar that screws into the hand pump. A siphon tube in the jar sucks up the dust with each pump of the air plunger which then creates a small puff of air that blows a fine puff of the insecticide dust on whatever you are dusting. Cuts down on wasting powder. Allows you to apply just the right amount on the plants with less wasted on the ground when you hand sprinkle the dust. Dusters sold online or at your garden centers.

Ah yes! The weeding video we’ve been begging for forever! Seriously tho, my family struggles with weeds and finding a decent weed killer. It’s nice to see it’s working and if keeps working we might look into burnout.
That kind of looks like Japanese beetle damage..not sure if you have those there. They come out in the Midwest at the time everything is in full bloom like....this week or next. Eeek. Traps work VERY well and trap them by the hundreds for about a week or two in late June. It’s a lot of beetle carnage (literally beetle juice in the trap bag-ewww), but it is necessary or they will destroy everything in their path. Just when you have everything looking glorious, those beetles are underground, waiting...saying “Ready, set, GO!!”
I appreciate you mentioning that not all bugs are bad. Esp the earwig. They are predators.
Last time i saw skeletonized leaves it was Japanese beetles.
I don't use anything since i have so many birds i don't want them eating poisoned insects.
I also try to use the benefits. And if i find a plant drawing a horrid amount in, i stop using that plant.

Thanks for your videos about the produces you use, I'm thinking a lot of people watch you, I went to Lowe's for some Rose RX, my daughter had to stand on the garden cart an use a hoe to reach it, but all the other stuff was full to the end of the shelf. You've helped me to figure out how to garden in this higher Ozark mountain climate that will range from 6a to 7a in temperature, and the storms often go through the lower elevations around us, so it is dryer also. I started using Burnout this season and it works great! Also, I use the Slug/bug stuff you showed. But, I also learned that old coffee grounds are good for the slugs too! I use my organic Coffee grounds!

I use boiling water for the weeds in my paved path. Kills them instantly. Steam would work x
I’m in Scotland so the paving stone weeds are tenacious (since the climate is perfect for them 😒😂). I sprinkle salt over the weeds, THEN go in with boiling water 🤓💖 that kills the existing weed but it makes the area inhospitable for new ones. It doesn’t work *permanently* because rain will eventually wash the salt away BUT it does prevent them from coming back too quickly, especially in summer when there’s less rainfall ☺️
@@TallulahFoxxx I tried salt as heard it kills slugs. I soon discovered it is a slow and painful death and so I repented of my actions. I also believe the salt killed a frog which was what alerted me. I cleaned up any salt residue as thought it too cruel. I've also decided against any boiling water because I have thousands of worms and probably a myriad of other little critters that I don't want to cook. In the past I have always pulled any weeds out by hand just as soon as I have noticed them and I will continue to do the same in the future. Nowadays I have only a small block of land, (too small for me really) and I also have the luxury of time, so keeping my garden weed free is a pleasure as I like to keep busy. I don't have very many slugs and snails anymore, snails go over my back fence into a reserve as food for frogs, lizards and birds. Unfortunately, as I don't like to touch slugs I just squash them nowadays on my concrete. I don't like killing them and I am a bit of a hypocrite, but slugs eat flower petals, caterpillars seem to only eat foliage. Because I don't like killing anything I've now resorted to praying to our wonderful Creator to keep everything in check. After all I do understand that every thing has got to eat.

I think this might be interesting as I’ve read this quote on many sites “There’s really nothing organic about the dish soap mix, either. All three main ingredients are chemicals, and one weed scientist who has written about it argues that toxicity levels in vinegar and salt may be higher than in glyphosate.” It’s worth looking into before using. I think everything should be used with thoughtful caution. Thank you Laura for this excellent video. We’ve had an epic amount of rainfall over the last year in southern NJ and the bugs are rampant and I’m looking for solutions. I will look into these products.
Oh and we used to use a shampoo on dogs that contained salt to kill fleas. It softens the exoskeleton and kills them. Salt can definitely kill earthworms and other beneficials and make the soil a “dead zone” where nothing will grow.
Glyphosate is a antimicrobial which means it is killing all the soil flora and it will kill your intestinal flora too....the weed scientist might just be selling something...definitely not a soil scientist...of course a soil scientist would not recommend salt either..
Anne Beck I’m not sure what he/she would be selling by saying that dish soap isn’t organic. “Unfortunately, something as innocent as dish soap can have potentially dangerous chemicals that may pose as hazards to human health and as contaminants to the environment. ... Some of the basic ingredients in dish soap include surfactants, preservatives, fragrances, colors as well as active or inactive ingredients. “ There’s a downside to everything unfortunately. If your worried about chemicals that effect health, look into the clothing you wear everyday. It’s shocking how many chemicals are in them and no one seems to care. All carried under the word “fragrance”.

I discovered 2 days ago that i have spider mites and I also don't like using pesticides. I shook a few stalks of a few of my flowers n roses onto a brown paper bag n got out the magnifying glass and it matched the pics online to a T! I'm using half and half rubbing alcohol and water especially on the underside of the leaves and its working out great! Funny how everyone is breaking out with all these nasty criters at once and your doing a vid about them! Timing is everything! Thanks for all the information!

Japanese Beetles are horrid here in South Carolina right now. I’ve sprayed Rose RX and Insecticidal Soap, but they’re still munching away undaunted. I was about to break out the old school Sevin Dust, but I will definitely try the safe, organic dust that you mentioned instead. Perfect timing! 👌🏻

I used small containers of beer flush with ground level to draw slugs away from my hostas and cabbages last year. Worked great. Also drew in wasps.

Used Burnout for the first time last weekend and loved it! Killed crabgrass and weeds within hours. Some will need a second spray, but so impressed.
I’m in FL and have heat, rain and insects/snails/slugs galore, just about year round. They seem to be attacking everything. I’m desperately trying to keep everything healthy. This is SO HELPFUL! THANK YOU! I also have moles which the castor oil deterrent did not work at all. I’m so grateful for these videos. My yard wouldn’t look near as good if it wasn’t for y’all. ☺️

This video is exactly what I needed today! We have been doing a HUGE back yard reno and the weeds are out of control. Yesterday I sprayed a large area, that was almost completely covered with a blanket of weeds, with burn out concentrate mixed to 9% and ONE HOUR later they were all completely dead. We deal with a lot of goat head weed here in Boise and I was so excited that this option took care of it so well!

Perfect timing! This time last year, I was having a horrible problem with slugs, beetles and earwigs. I purchased diatomaceous earth and Sluggo which seemed to do the trick. I also offered the slugs a "beer bash" which caught quite a few. The earwigs seemed to like to congregate underneath pots. This year, I purchased pot feet to raise the pots up for better ventilation. So far, I've only seen some slugs hiding under stones which were found while weeding, but we've been so rainy with much cooler temperatures this spring in Upstate New York. The heat hasn't set in yet.
Thanks for the info. I try to use all natural weed killers as well. One thing I really love is white vinegar. It's cheap I buy it by the gallon sometimes I don't even dilute it and it works great

You're so lucky! I'm in the Republic of Ireland. In early March local farmers spray Roundup (Glyphosate) on the fields in preparation for sowing. I am trying to grow my own organic food, but it's very hard to find organic insect sprays and organic fertilizers in local garden centers. I'm embarrassed to say we are so behind other countries in terms of organic gardening and crop production. Only 1.6% of Irish land is used for organic farming. The cancer rates in the country are appalling by the way.
Yes Laura, I need to get some of that weed control. My soil looks just like yours white dead and full of nothing but weeds. I have brought in lots of topsoil and wood chips to my land and it really has made a difference controlling weeds and it makes my soil look better.

Yay! Weed killer for gravels. Great product info. Also great bug killer stuff.
TIP 1: An easy way to spread powder on plants is to get a knee-hi panty hose and use a paper cup to put the powder in the hose. Then just touch the plant with the hose and dust it. It really works and the powder stays on the plant.
TIP 2: I’ve been dealing with poison oak and have used a mixture of a gallon of water, a cup of salt and a couple squirts (or 2 TBS) of dish soap. Mix this together and pour on the area to kill. If you have a sprayer, you could put it in there and spray the area. It’s kills everything it touches!!! Weeds, grass, poison vines, etc are dead in a few hours or overnight.
Thought I would share these tips with everybody.
I am going to have to try that mixture I have a very aggressive vine I am try to eradicate.
Tess Hackett You can even throw in some white vinegar and that will make it a little stronger. I pour my mixture from a bucket since I don’t have a sprayer. Good Luck. It should work.
I am so glad I found this video! I am fighting Dock! It is never ending. It has a root like a giant carrot and if you don't get it all out more grows from the broken root! Not to mention it gets rows of seeds on it that dry out and start more plants! It is so invasive and running a muck in my Lilly garden.

I know a lot of things say pet safe, but current studies indicate that cats are extremely sensitive to citrus, clove and cinnamon oils. Very toxic for some. Just an FYI. I have thousands of lilies in my garden, and my cats have never been bothered by them, and yet they're supposed to be highly toxic to cats. I take everything with a grain of salt, but I do like to be aware of things

That big weed that you sprayed was wild spinach! In NM we call them quelites, and we can't wait for them to come up every spring. We blanch & freeze them and when we're ready to eat them we sautee them with chopped bacon and chile seeds and eat them with pinto beans and red chile. It's the best 😋

I saw some comments regarding black spot so I thought this might be helpful. Mix 1 part milk to 2 or 3 parts water and spray to control black spot. It works!
The milk can be either fresh or a little sour and the fat content doesn't matter.
I also live in southern Idaho and Rollie Pollies (spelling?) is what's eating all of my low lying leaves. The taller ones is usually caused by earwig damage.

Hi Laura, that is great info. I was wondering if you can do another video that telling us what do the house plant's leaves tell us what did we do wrong. For example, if we see brown tip leaves, that means plants need more humidity; curly leaves means getting too much sun; black dots and brown leaves means bacteria, etc. (If I made mistakes assumptions, I am sorry, and that's why we need your help. LOL)
