I have a very early 456 (either 1993 or 1994, depending on where you look it up - pre-airbag, super old ECUs with the separate "SLOW DOWN 1-6" and "SLOW DOWN 7-12" lights). It had a ton of issues that were evident within about two weeks of when I got it (disclaimer: I bought it from a TH-camr whose channel name rhymes with "goovie's harage"). Ignoring some (a lot of) engine work it needed that isn't relevant here, it had a mess of electrical issues. I sent out the fuseboard for a reman at GT Car Parts in Arizona (US), and it was literally like night and day, whether headlight flickering going away, engine electronic issues disappearing, the Christmas tree on the dash going out, highly recommended. Expensive, and the reman itself isn't really DIY-able, but absolutely worth it for taking that out as a variable with respect to gremlins in the electric systems. For general thoughts about 456 ownership (or at least purchasing) compared to the 550/575, 355, and 360, the prices get low enough to be "Why bother with a great condition 996 Turbo or decent 997.1 Turbo? I CAN buy that Ferrari I liked as a teenager." But the 456 parts have the same price as parts for the 550 with no regard to the 456 often selling for about half as much as a 550. And then there's the general nonsense of the reliability of 30+ year old Ferrari engineering (it was a new car model in 1992!). BUT, when it works, it is so, so good.
To flush coolant out, take your highest water point on the car probably the coolant reservoir put hose pipe in there take the bottom radiator hose off and run hose pipe until the water runs clear best to do it with the thermostat out quite easy, really love your stuff ….❤
Nein nein nein!!!! Don't use das vaser from der garden hose. Buy distilled water, about 15 gallons, drain the old coolant ,use a radiator flush from LM with distilled water, run the engine for 30 minutes, then drain. Then flush and drain again just with water, when only clean water comes out, drain and fill with proper coolant. Never use utility water it's got minerals that destroy the engine parts.
Hello Scott, I am an avid Alfa Romeo driver (currently number 16). Previously I had the two liter versions. Since I moved from Germany to Gran Canaria I drive a second hand 147. I am not really happy with it, I miss the power here in the mountains. But fortunately it is rust free. Biggest problems overheating and lack of power due to defects, cylinder head gasket twice, a damaged valve (piece broken off) and finally a defective spark plug, 8 replaced. I do not want to spend much more on it, year of manufacture 2006, mileage 208,000 and it is an oil lover. Half a year ago, after the valves had been replaced (and also the cylinder head gasket, timing belt and water pump), it started overheating again and lost coolant. I then put clean water in the radiator to be able to continue driving and then, in doses according to the instructions, added MOTUL Antifreeze additive to prevent radiator leaks “STOP LEAK”, with antifreeze. I think the cooling system was not properly bled during the last repair. I turned the heating to the highest setting, ran the engine later with the filler cap for the coolant off and gradually added antifreeze and the additive in doses. There is no bleeding on these Twin Spark engines. Fortunately, I no longer have any water loss and the heating is working again, you don't need it here, but it was the cause of a lot of trouble because there was air in the system. I am not a fan of those additives because of blockages, but it worked. Flush your cooling system until it is clean, there are all kinds of remedies on the market and bleed your cooling system. If there is air in it, the pressure will increase enormously and you will have problems again! Good luck Willem Bloemendal ps the 456 is a beautiful car. It needs some love...😀
Another great video, albeit about an absolute nightmare of a car! I've always liked the 456's looks, but I had no idea they were so problem-prone! Ferrari should be ashamed of themselves for making such a dreadful money-pit. That said, if anyone can get to the bottom of all the problems and get the car fully functional again, it's you Scott. So keep up the good work, and see you in the next video 🙂
Cheers mate Ferrari 456 buyer beware. But again without you posting this video there's several who may not take the opportunity of purchasing one of these maybe just maybe you have and I believe you have helped someone think You know what I should be a Ferrari owner even at this price range and with this level of things not sorted out to have the reference material of your awesome TH-cam videos so again thank you for posting
Well, if you have the time a patience, ability to source parts not necessarily OEM then i still think its worth the gamble when these work they are a great ferrari
Drain the cooling system first. Then use a vacuum filler to pull a vacuum on the cooling system. Use a mixture of water and Prestone flush and refill the cooling system. Drive her for a week and then fully drain the system again. Once you run some water through it revacuum the cooling system and fill with your preferred coolant. My recommendation is euro purple or blue coolant, but any solid etherlene glycol coolant will do for a vehicle in those years.
I recommend using polyurethane hoses, which last very long. You can get them cut in the sizes and diameters you need. I did that on all my cars, as I was tired of replacing hoses. Find a provider of Poly hoses, they sell then by the meter.
Hi Scott, great episode, unbelievable prices for some of those parts. Horrible job, as you cannot test it unless the engine is all back together. 😬 I hope that sensor comes out OK.. I would heat\cool the temperature sensor thread with my butane torch a few times before trying to remove it. Great Music on this one.!
Yes, this is worth pursuing. The 456 is such a beautiful, simple, elegant design, it makes you wonder why no one else had come up with it by the time Pininfarina did.
Love your work BRO, please keep these videos long so much information here👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Yes you should give the cooling system a flush👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks for sharing, Stay Safe BRO😍😍😍
Good stuff, Scott is BACK! Always loved the 456 until I saw one this year with terrible window fitment similar as yours and other signs of bad build quality. Really put me off. A Citroen XM would probably give me a better ownership experience than this.
first of all, fill the system with coolant, I see that there is water with rust flowing there, the water boils much earlier than the coolant, which causes the pressure in the system to increase
Thanks Scott 👍 Iain Tyrrel told us that sometimes the 456 has a problem with not getting full power from a badly adjusted throttle cable. Please can you check thanks again
I always liked the 456, quite a nice shape and with a v12 but...my god, what a pile of poo to deal with. I really hope whoever does buy it knows what they're dealing with! I do love your vids Scott, keep 'em coming.
I think I might have one of the cars with a few issues, im hoping there are well maintained examples out there where most of the common issues have been sorted
Just flush your coolant system a few times with tap water and end with a flush with demineralised water. Coolant additive is only necessary when it stays in the car for a long period of time to keep it from oxidizing or freezing.
I think I'll stick to building and displaying Lego versions of these sorts of cars. Way cheaper and a lot less worry! 😀 Still fun to watch your videos Scott. Thanks!
Drain and fill with tap water , drain and fill with de-mineralised water , then drain and fill with the correct coolant concentrate in the correct amount to reach 50/50 ratio and top up with de-mineralised water. You need coolant to stop corrosion even if you don't need it for anti freeze properties.
My Cerbera's cooling system was overheating and chucking rusty water out like that. I used 3 Harpic Power Plus tablets, cran the car up to temp and drained it when it cooled down, the water was filthy so I did it again but it was totally unnecessary. All rust gone. The tablets have got citric acid in them which is safer to use than white vinegar. You're welcome.
8:36 So embarrassing to see, that all the 90's Ferrari engineering, at this price point, could not provide you with a bonnet/ hood mechanism, that has a 'maintenance position' (like 90°s upwards...)?!
I’ve had my 456 now for 2 years and so far all is good. The service book and history made sense, it had 3 previous owners and a high milage, which is key for any car with the F133 engine. They are basically run in around 70-90k km. Regular driving with generous warm up as well as cool down times plus regular service intervals is absolute key. The hose issues are well know, same as the Cat ECU issue. I took mine to an independent Ferrari expert and asked to do basically do anything necessary to make it mechanically sound. That included replacing all hoses around the engine. It’s a bit of a financial hit right upfront but pays dividend in the long run. It’s also what Ferrari will do when you enroll your car in their ramp up to Ferrari classiche program. But I’d rather pay an expert who works on that specific engine and car generation every day. Bottom line: yes it’s a 200.000£ car with equivalent service prices BUT if you use common sense and buy the right car with a sound history and a good milage, you can at least reduce the risk. The problems usually arise once the car has sat for long periods of time. You can avoid this … pirelli even has winter tires for the car (and I can attest how much fun that car is in winter). Now I will go and pray to Enzo’s shrine to keep all the horrors from this video from me…!
TOTALLY agree these cars sat around aren't good. forget a low mileage car mine with 18K in low. A high mileage car with good service history is MUCH better, its been used and proves it works. I certainly believe these can be maintained on a lesser budget, theres no need for OEM hoses etc as far better quality aftermarket.
@ indeed, buying a garage queen is great when you’re interested in having a car sat in your garage. Go on a road-trip and everything suddenly goes wrong. I wish I would have 5% of your DIY talent in me, it would safe me so much money. But I figured this is not the car to start with it, so it goes to the expert. But just the point to not get the OEM part, which sometimes is a faulty design from the get go and rather go for a reengineered part saves money and nerves. Took your advice to replace the Cat ECUs with the upgraded bits and never looked back. Keep up the good work! One day I’ll muster the courage and change my own airfilter…
Hello from Ireland again Scotty. Jesus, I never liked the look of this Ferrari 456, but never knew it had these problems from new, that's crazy Scott. And £200k brand new. Yours is 1997, I believe, This Car is leaking everywhere from old age bro. These hoses look like they are Original and have never been changed lol. That 456 that you got the parts off looks lovely and clean. You're Ferrari sounds awesome mate. Great job Scott. 🙏🙏👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 P.S The best of luck selling this Car to raise money for you know what bro. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
No advice Scott but I still think it’s a great car and worth putting the time and effort into it. For somebody wanting to get into a V12 it isn’t going to ever get any cheaper. Somebody else who understands their problems and quirks will surely buy it.
@ it sounds better than the F80 my friend has just been offered to buy. He’s got 10 others so he had the points. V6 blows my mind, I know the world is changing but come on Ferrari. Not made my mind up on the looks yet either.
I bought one which had 3000 miles fully serviced, it was beautiful, and drove amazing. But for anyone thinking of getting one, the car is engineered and assembled like an absolute piece of shite. Don't be fooled by a perfect car, even if you get it checked at Ferrari and it gets flying colors. Soooooo many parts just deteriorate, and the cost to replace those parts is not even close to justify the cost of the car. If you buy one, you will come out of that experience a changed person, it's a mind boggling experience. (I can easily afford to have it repaired and I was maintaining it regularly at the dealer, but at some point I will like, no more!!!
I understand wanting to stay oem and original with respect to parts but surely modern cooling hoses are better given the progress in technology etc? Why not just look for a modern equivalent than paying thru the nose for Ferrari parts? Great video and one of my favourite channels 😊
*Happy Hallowe'en !* Haha, that was fun :) I guess any 28 year old car can have problems. The fact that the potential for a £5,000 bill is lurking in every body panel, or corner of the engine bay, is certainly scary. When combined with the cars being worth less than £40,000(?), they truly seem to be Hallowe'en nightmares .... For me, if I needed, say £10,000 per year to keep the gremlins at bay, and more for the (I imagine) very high insurance premium, I'd almost need the car for free to justify owning it. And I guess there's not even a remote chance of them going up in value. All the best and greetings from Prague !
Had two of them and took them and my young family all over Europe in them. The 456GT and the 456GTM Only the former had the window issues but were solved easily. Did 180mph with four in it and the GTM did the Mille Miglia Tribute: 1000 miles there, 1000 miles on the event and 1000 miles home. Never missed a beat. Too many were bought and seldom used - lack of use is what kills Ferrari’s
Looking at the temperature guage at 15:57, the lowest tick says 120 degrees, and 8 ticks further it says 190 degrees. That makes each tick 8.75 degrees! Also, what a great spot to put the coolant fan sensor, nice and close to the road surface. What could possibly go wrong?
LOL Ferrari are genius .... its as though they put these things in places to fail so they can charge a fortune for partisan to fix it. ECUs that cook in the engine bay of a ferrari 360 then charge £5000+ when they fail
I once had a shop where I worked on ferrari's. Bob bought a new Testarossa. I drove it to a photoshoot. Car threw the fan belts. ferrari refused to pay the repair bill as I was not "certified." I worked on the older out-of-warranty cars primarily. ferrari has always treated its customers poorly. I pitted this customer against another as to who was spending the most money in my shop. Neither one of them ever caught on. LOL!
There are quite a few cooling system cleaning treatments on the market, pick one that is safe with aluminium, the only advice I can give about using these chemicals is you really need to be able to drain the engine block completely, some engines have drain plugs specifically for this purpose, if there are none you can flush the block by removing the thermostat and bottom hose and use a hosepipe in the stat housing.
Yes, there are many treatment agents, most of them are acid- or vinegar-based. I've seen many people also run water with a dissolved dishwasher tab for a couple of hours, then flush, with good results.
Ahh after answering the door every 2 minutes, and being dragged around trick or treating🎃 😂 I finally sat down with a brew and your video popped up!! Woohoo! 👌👍
@ 😂 👻 I can relate to the “being watched” 🐁 🐀 it did make me laugh out loud! I have a Alfa spider 916 autodelta that’s been sat in my garage for a fair few years and every time I go out I’m looking for droppings 😂 always a relief when alls good 😅 great video! 🎃 👻
The 456 is notorious for having radiator problems (i.e. clogging) and I think there is a big rubber hose of the cooling system, located in the back side of the engine prone to failing and very hard to change. The temperature is too hign, even for a stationary 456, maybe even a radiator issue is present.
You are welcome!😊 It seems that original water pump of 456 is crap and there is a modified Ferrari version: the Capristo one, with metallic impeller, is on another level
Hi Scott. I feel ya (with different brands of cars). How often do you put effort into creating a list of alt non-OEM substitutes? I.e. I doubt Ferrari makes thermal switches. You only need a catalog for ones w/ the right thread/connector and temp range. Re an engine flush - IDK if the block is Iron, but if it is, you might do a multi-day flush with a small transfer pump hooked into a heater hose (if accessible) and a bucket for recirculation - first filled with CLR, then swapped over to EvapoRust ThemoCure (you'll want to warm the engine just to pre-warm a few times with that one) - then a final flush - then to the coolant of your choice (AIT, or a more modern OAT, HOAT, or PHOAT - as long as it's labeled and the system is fully flushed). Re the hoses, would not sections of Silicone radiator hose be useful for the more inaccessible sections? I know they'll permeate H20 more than EPDM rubber, but given their longevity and heat resistance, and potential to DIY construct... - for the difficult to reach sections... Also IDK if you saw, but Newco products, Abbot interfast/aicfast (might be custom), Heinbrand (search yellow nylock at site), OEP Products all seem to have yellow insert nylocks, but not always a yellow zinc finish.
Remove the thermostat refill with scale and rust remover and flush with tap. Flush refill with distilled water flush. Refill and replace therma stat with proper coolant. Hope this helps
The Ford Taurus looking of the Ferrari models. I always think the 456 is what you got when you thought you were too cool to own a 430, and didn't want a 612.
I know you are aware of these things, but just wanted to let you know that replacing the fuseboard on my 512 TR solved almost all my electrical problems ( 1 fan not working, starter issues, fuel gauge not working). I thought the whole wiring was slowly degenerating and giving 1 fault after the other. But fuseboard was the main culprit in my case 🙂
I had an early 456 had the window problem sorted by the dealer when I first had it, came back a little while after was a continual problem. It would also stop starting when warm and after a lot of investigation i finally found the problem, a very badly installed dealer fitted imobiliser and once removed this cured it.
Man I just can't give any love to the 456 ...such a lemon, my old E46 had a coolent hose that blew out in the same place under the intake...who designs shiz like that..smh .. anyway all I kept thinking was how much I dig the ratarossa ... Well hopefully the 456 sells fast and the money for the F40 build can start
Just to add don't flush your coolant until you're 100% sure you've no more leaks. Otherwise it'll suck in air and rust the coolant again which is counter productive.
Great video Many thanks! Forte Bio Degreaser & Cooling system flush is a great product. Or old school run it up with biological washing powder always strips out rust and dirt.
Glad you enjoyed the graveyard/birthing ward mate 🤣 we think you should turbo the 456 and daily it for a year MINIMUM 😜
I wish to thank you and other channels in informing me that I should never, ever, consider buying a Ferrari at any cost.
LOL nope not even a cheap one
@@Ratarossaespecially not a cheap one😂😂
Buy an Alfa, all the same heartache for a fraction of the cost.....mostly.
Q: How do you know you're driving a Ferrari?
A: It's usually on fire.
I’ve gotta disagree. My 360 just crossed 40,000 miles and has never left me on the side of the road or with an unexpected failure 🤷🏻♂️

Simply drain all coolant. Leave radiator drain open. Put garden hose in, and turn it on. That we used to do in the old days. No fancy chemicals needed
P.S The best of luck selling this Car to raise money for you know what bro. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Cheers buddy, yes I suspect all the hoses are the originals
No advice Scott but I still think it’s a great car and worth putting the time and effort into it. For somebody wanting to get into a V12 it isn’t going to ever get any cheaper. Somebody else who understands their problems and quirks will surely buy it.
they are a great car when they work and that engine is so powerful and a great sounding v12
Thanks buddy, yes I totally agree i really need to do that on this car as not fussed about OEM unlike the BBI
@ looking forward to the complete build on this and the other projects on the go. 😀
Hello Scott, I’ve always had great success using a dish washer tablet for cooling system cleaning.
Excellent tip thanks ...Ill try that
That grenaded engine clip was that of them deliberately pushing it to failure. Very entertaining.
Yes that was on TopGear many many years ago when they launched the car
That car looks like a good candidate for an LS engine swap!
A good summary buddy. Ferraris something suprise with values even the bad models often rise in value 400/412 older 365
@@Ratarossa I really like the 400/412. To me they are the Volvos of the Ferrari lineup : "They're boxy. But they're good" :)
The engine still sounds amazing
Its a great sounding v12 and loads of power .... when it works
Great update..
Thanks 👍
Had two of them and took them and my young family all over Europe in them. The 456GT and the 456GTM
Only the former had the window issues but were solved easily.
@@Ratarossa yeah that does almost seem deliberate..
Well Scott, I think the 'cherished' plate on your 456 bring no good karma
I once had a shop where I worked on ferrari's. Bob bought a new Testarossa. I drove it to a photoshoot. Car threw the fan belts. ferrari refused to pay the repair bill as I was not "certified." I worked on the older out-of-warranty cars primarily. ferrari has always treated its customers poorly. I pitted this customer against another as to who was spending the most money in my shop. Neither one of them ever caught on. LOL!
lol
There are quite a few cooling system cleaning treatments on the market, pick one that is safe with aluminium, the only advice I can give about using these chemicals is you really need to be able to drain the engine block completely, some engines have drain plugs specifically for this purpose, if there are none you can flush the block by removing the thermostat and bottom hose and use a hosepipe in the stat housing.
awesome thanks for this
Yes, there are many treatment agents, most of them are acid- or vinegar-based. I've seen many people also run water with a dissolved dishwasher tab for a couple of hours, then flush, with good results.
Cars😱always break,it’s how you fix them🤪old or new,but keeps them going for the next generation💪well done SIR👍🍺🍺
Ahh after answering the door every 2 minutes, and being dragged around trick or treating🎃 😂 I finally sat down with a brew and your video popped up!! Woohoo! 👌👍
Thanks buddy, hope you enjoy and didnt spill that tea with the jumpy bit
@ 😂 👻 I can relate to the “being watched” 🐁 🐀 it did make me laugh out loud! I have a Alfa spider 916 autodelta that’s been sat in my garage for a fair few years and every time I go out I’m looking for droppings 😂 always a relief when alls good 😅 great video! 🎃 👻
The 456 is notorious for having radiator problems (i.e. clogging) and I think there is a big rubber hose of the cooling system, located in the back side of the engine prone to failing and very hard to change. The temperature is too hign, even for a stationary 456, maybe even a radiator issue is present.
interesting, i will look into that. was unaware of the rad issue. Thanks buddy
You are welcome!😊
It seems that original water pump of 456 is crap and there is a modified Ferrari version: the Capristo one, with metallic impeller, is on another level
Thanks buddy
Remove the thermostat refill with scale and rust remover and flush with tap. Flush refill with distilled water flush. Refill and replace therma stat with proper coolant. Hope this helps
awesome cheers
The Ford Taurus looking of the Ferrari models. I always think the 456 is what you got when you thought you were too cool to own a 430, and didn't want a 612.
I actually like the looks …. Just not the problems
I think I have a similar problem on my testarossa
We need this channel to hit 1M Subs
That would be great
@ You deserve it brother
16.47: grab yourself a cup, the kettle has boiled!! 🤣
LOL
I had an early 456 had the window problem sorted by the dealer when I first had it, came back a little while after was a continual problem. It would also stop starting when warm and after a lot of investigation i finally found the problem, a very badly installed dealer fitted imobiliser and once removed this cured it.
Very interesting that the window problem came back. That electrical gremlin nice to hear wasn't ferrari's fault
3:03 - Possessed? Maybe it should have been repossessed! (or recalled). That thing looks more fitting for christmas season than halloween :D
LOL
"The cheapest Ferrari is often the most expensive Ferrari".
-Internet collective wisdom (ICW)
ICW is correct
Fill the coolingsystem with dishwashing liquid and let it warm up. Then pull the bottom radiator hose. Repeat until it’s clean
Perfect thanks
The 456 stands for amount of times it’s gonna breakdown
per day
@@Ratarossa 🤣🤣🤣👍
Fantastic 🇬🇧 😮❤
thanks
id be looking around for a shop that makes silicone hoses after hearing ferrari prices
I early spit up my drink with the crucifix made from spanners.
glad you enjoyed it
Find your nearest Wurth stockist and get their cooling system flush. Worth stuff just works.
Brilliant thanks
9:08 - You can see all the dried water there
lots of it
That is a DOG of a car! 😅 Massive Kudos to you for taking it on.
Thanks 👍
@Ratarossa You're a brave man. Great vids btw. Really looking forward to the wrapping up of the BBS, love that car.
Surely you’d get more money striping it for parts. Get each part ice blasted and will look as good as new
Just to add don't flush your coolant until you're 100% sure you've no more leaks. Otherwise it'll suck in air and rust the coolant again which is counter productive.
The £250 hose that's made in England is the only one that looks intact. The chepo ones failed. +1 to England.
LOL
Wow to much for factory part. Would replace with steel braided lines so you don’t have the same problems. Customer from hose man. Cheers
I've heard putting a dishwasher tablet in your radiator helps clean all the gunge out.
A few have said this and its something im going to try
Great video Many thanks! Forte Bio Degreaser & Cooling system flush is a great product. Or old school run it up with biological washing powder always strips out rust and dirt.
Thanks so much for this. I will give it a try
Epic!!! 💰💰💰🔥🔥🔥🤣🤣🤣
worked on few 456 and i confirm they arent great. although most ferrari are the same.
