Someone tell the guy who is breaking the glass and window frame that he needs to put his visor down. It protects your eyes and stops you losing the sight in your eye if you get glass fly off and lodge in it. Come on guys this is basic safety stuff you should all know. Be safe

Serious question! Why do the not wear the oxygen mask when going inside the building? At least to help from breathing in toxins and to help prevent cancer!?
BarXaM Fitness they save the air for when they need it most. If it’s light smoke and they can still see and breathe, they’ll continue on until it gets difficult to do so. Also it’s actually not pure oxygen, it’s just regular air. Hope that helps!

Yes, yes it is, it happens a lot here in Mid-town, there could be a crew investigating a smoke condition, a fire in a side walk grate, or even a electric vault fire in the street and people would just walk by and never give what the firefighters were doing a second look.
that's crazy! Never seen something like that in Germany, that's why i was wondering. The firefighters don't even really care.. Guess NY is not compareable to German Citys tho😅

Fire in a window frame, how did that happen?
I don't know. However, around the 0:31 second mark or so, I thought I heard a handie-talkie transmission "they said they were welding in here."

May I ask you a question. Who decides which firemen run hoses, uses hooks to probe and pull, who ventilate? Are they specialized in that field?
And do they ever switch off? Just curious. Thank you.
In my dept. It's whoever calls it. Everyone wants nozzle, but you have to call it first. If you're not nozzle, you grab tools. Second engine on scene typically vents if needed. We're all trained for everything, but we're also a volunteer fire department.
For the FDNY, the officer on the engine decides who gets the nozzle; if it's a small fire it may be a probie or the junior member to give them experience. Ventilation and use of hooks, etc., are for the trucks (ladders).
Virginia Boucher every position of every firetruck has a specific job to do. Depending on what order you are dispatched it will determine your units and your personal tasks that have to be completed.
The first engine dispatched will focus on attacking the fire and bringing hose lines. There is a guy who is assigned that specific task. The others help him bring hose to the fire and extinguish. His driver will pump the water to him
The second third fourth engines will make sure that the first engine has a continuous water supply. Their primary job is to make sure that the first engine parked in front of the address has water either pumped to it from a hydrant connected to another firetruck or that it has its own water supply. Once that task is completed, then the other engines will bring back up fire hoses to help attack the fire.
This process is usually done twice, once in the rear of the building, once in the front.
There are people whose primary job is to go directly to the basement regardless what’s on fire to start from the bottom most level and work their way up to be sure that fire isn’t under anyone at any time.
At the same time there are guys from the ladder companies who go directly to the top floor and roof to report on conditions there.
There are also tasks that have to be completed such as turning off electricity to the building, turning off the gas service, venting, searching for victims, gaining entry, placing ladders, checking exposures, etc the list is endless.
This explanation is a VERY simplified version of what happens. Just know that it isn’t like guys get off and run around and do as they please. Everyone has a job to do, and that job varies from fire to fire. The order of dispatch determines what needs to be done
Truck company is hooks and halligans, engine is hose. Btw dont know your fire dept knowledge but a truck is a ladder truck with no water. An engine is a pumper.
Edward Prawdzik tower ladders are able to supply water if they stretch a line from the engine for an exterior attack depending on the type of job
Oh 1 other thing. Can someone tell me why all those guys have a BA set on for what you can clearly see is a small fire in and around the window frame and even when they have put the fire out they still walk around with the sets on their backs. If you aint using it take the thing off . It just might reduce some of the back problems you will suffer from. Officers should be looking after their guys better.
Because you have to be prepared for anything.... just imagine not having it, and then finding the fire extended somewhere to the 2nd floor. Then you dont have all the tools to do your job.

That's the sort of answer that gets people in trouble.
Its not about playing or a game.
Its about being professional and continually learning.
You do not need 20 or so guys all wandering around with sets on. If you had 5 or 6 guys with sets ready you would be fine. The guy outside cutting away would never need to go inside and could work far more safely and quickly without the set on. Firstly he might want to start with using the visor on the fire helmet he is wearing to protect his eyes while he smashes the window . That is the whole idea of having the visor in the first place.
Doesn't take much to lose your eyesight from glass flying around.
The guys inside the building who are checking for fire spread should be able to find out fairly quickly if they use their thermal image camera well if the fire has spread.
If you guys used smaller high pressure hosereels which a 2 or 3 man team can move around quickly and easily inside a building fire you could reduce the amount of guys you need to put in the risk zone and work far more quickly ( its hard work dragging a main jet around in a building ).
Having spent 23 years in the fire service I have always tried to look at what we do well and what we don't do so well and change accordingly. Having spent many years watching countless videos and speaking to numerous American firefighters I have found that many of the things you do are because you have always done it that way and its tradition.
Well eventually if you do that for too long your luck will run out.
I read the report a few years ago about the Charleston 9 which I am sure you will have heard of.
The bottom line was that the guys should sadly have never been in that building and never lost their lives .
Many of the firefighters who survived realised that many of the tactics were outdated and dangerous and although it was hard to except the knew it was time to change.

@@andyoxleyonhistravels the words I used are just an expression meaning that when it's time to enter an area that requires as SCBA, I already have it on and I dont have to go back to the apparatus to get it. I can appreciate trying to find ways for our members to be more safe with their actions. I just prefer to always have it with me. That doesnt mean I cant take it off to do certain tasks and keep it close by to don it when needed. Perhaps this is just personal preferance. But from my experience this is how we operate. Cheers....

What’s better? Letting it keep burning in the walls and travel from the first floor all the way to the roof of this 100+ year old flammable building or open up a single window and make sure you get the fire completely out?
