I remember riding my bicycle up to the hobby shop as a teen in the 80s. My model money was precious. At that time, Jo-Han kits were about $5, everything else was $2-4 more, because they usually had better details or options or better quality, like metal axels instead of plastic, and no holes in the engine. But i was happy to get that Jo-Han kit because i got to go home and actually build it. That is still my joy in the hobby, the build, and the dream of what i want to turn that box of plastic into.

Great detailed instructions. I am a member of the Majura Men's Shed in Canberra (Australia)
One thing let to another, and what started as car shape wooden blocks, have developed into a V8 engine with extractors, opening bonnet with logo, tip tray, upholstered interior, and aluminium bullbar.

What I do for decals etc is " hello darling can I use your cricut machine ;) " for scoring aluminum is either a wheel cutter from wife or pizza cutter. I use lego to make jigs as well. love your channel really love scratch building and mods.

Annealing is a very simple process and extremely helpful in shaping metals such as aluminum, brass and copper. Just buy a Ronson torch and gently heat the metal until the surface blackens. The only mistake you can make is applying too much heat and melting the metal. The process takes mere seconds and, once you see the improved workability, you'll be happy you've taken this valuable, easy step.

Great information on scratch aluminum work. My next project is a scratch FA-18. I've been getting better at realism and decided to make the skin out of aluminum. I've been looking for aluminum tips and tools, no one but you seems to offer any information. This is exactly what I've been looking for thank you so much!

A good trick for shaping slightly thicker aluminum is to color over the surface with red sharpie (only red works)- then gently heat it until the sharpie turns black, At this point it's super close to melting- very easy to shape, and just the act of bending it will harden it

Good video. Here's a tip. If you build a NASCAR vehicle and include a scale water bottle in the car, you can easily replicate a drinking straw with a piece of clear plastic from the plastic string that holds a price tag on clothing.

this worked for me. light your wood stove. lay the curled up pop can/ beer can aluminum sheet on the top of the stove uncurled and weight it down with a piece of 4" OD steel bar about 2 inches long. leave it there for a while and a while and a while... before you know it the dang thing will be flat and uncurled like a sheet of paper. it stinks a little until the paint and coatings off gas but just don't breath it..i don't know if it's what would be technically termed annealed but i think it is somehow different if the tension is out of the inner surface of the curl.

    annealing soda can aluminum:
aluminum anneals at around 625 degrees f (400 c) and you can anneal soda can sheets by writing on them with a sharpie and heating the sheet until the marker burns off (will leave bare metal underneath). You can use about any torch to do this and it just takes practice.
once properly annealed, it is pliable like foil but thicker and sturdier

I gave my first try at the vermillion decals on the Petty 79 Olds 442. I figured that might be the easier car to try them on as the paint scheme is pretty simple. Anyways... I tore it instantly haha. Patience wore thin and rage took over. I put everything in the box and put it in my closet and went and had a "cool down" whiskey. I think I'm going to stick to painting the petty stuff haha.

Annealing aluminum is very easy use a propane torch to heat the metal up evenly until you notice a color change once that color changes happened take the heat off and let it cool naturally. Then it is soft aluminum. If you wish to harden the aluminum again after making your part just get it hot again and drop it in water. The annealing process happens quite quickly with real thin aluminum give it a try it's super easy

I'm wondering if exista small tools that are recplicas of the big ones that can fold metal sheet, also used to build real size body car parts, especially for clasic cars... It would be really nice to play in this way..take a soda can aluminium sheet and start folding with that mini tools...probably the results can be really impressive..

I've just found your page & i must say yours is the best for scratch build or kit bash technique. I'm not yet skilled as you & i want to ask this...@10:41 you mention "cutting board" (red) you like for making the Monte grill. I finished with a curbside Petty Monte i did from old Snap Kit Lowrider (before Salvino's proper NASCAR body Monte). I flared fenders, etc, for stock car wheels & tires But that grill...I about pulled my hair out using screen from kitchen strainer etc. Could you please tell again what/how you used that red cutting board tool for making that neat grill. Thanks

The best way to anneal aluminium is to take bar of soap and rub it on the Aluminium, just a very light film of soap. Gently heat until to soap turns black and allow it to cool down.

I’ve seen Jesse James eniling(I know that I spelled it wrong) with an acetylene torch with no oxygen. The flame was soft, and spitting soot in the air, but he was able to shape much thicker aluminum to make gas tanks for motorcycles. My guess is that you can do the same, by holding your aluminum over a stove burner for a couple of seconds

the can material is not so malleable. the material is stretched to the point of breaking in the manufacture of the can. in other words stretched past the yield point of the material. this gives rigidity to the thinny (.004" give or take)sheet. the bottom is near double the thickness. marvel of technology these cans are...i use the stuff and still am learning to do things with it.. pie plates are good source of workable foil. they are quite malleable and canbe burnished a lot before trouble shows up..
