Glen Campbell's fantastic guitar solo on "Galveston"

  • WATCH MY COVER OF THIS SOLO HERE • "Galveston" (Live) Gui...
SOURCE VIDEO FOR MY LESSON AND COVER . THIS SOLO IS PURE BRILLIANCE!!! The lines show a really deep understanding of both the song structure and the tradition of his musical background. It's also extremely virtuoustic and contains of all the hallmark's that make Glen's playing legendary. Beautiful phrasing, octave runs, arpeggios and sweep, the odd outside notes and chromatic runs weaved in so masterfully. This was REALLY hard to copy- probably the hardest cover I've done.
Clean Strat (sounds like early 60s to me) with no gain to hide behind. (distortion sounding guitars are much easier to play and hide a multitude of sins)
Anyway, here's the cleaned up video- I remixed the sound, applying EQ, rounded out the bass, and normalized the peaks, with about a 3 db gain addition. This sounds better than the original video I took it from.
Guitar players who dig Glen - PLEASE SUBSCRIBE. I have other classic CG solo covers and lessons posted here, with much more on the way.

No one with knowledge of guitar players considers Glenn Campbell “underrated”. Renowned guitarists appreciated and admired his skills.
Glenn Campbell was a member of the ‘Wrecking Crew’. Those were the best of the best studio session players, performing on more hit songs then can be listed here.
Some people may have recently discovered Glenn, so he appears underrated to them, but in the music world, he is far from “underrated”.

When I was in my 20s I won a free ticket from a radio show contest to see Glen Campbell. At that time I hated him. If one of his songs was on the radio I'd change channel. But I was a starving student and would never pass up anything free ;-) So my friend and I went to his concert and it literally changed my life. I saw real musical talent and prowess for the first time. I was so inspired that I changed from being a bedroom strummer to a semi-professional musician and paid my way through university and beyond by playing music. Thanks, Glen Campbell! You made me about $50,000. And more importantly, you made me a very happy little musician.

I love Glen's music (and have done since I was a child), and I must admit a lot of the people I mentioned have been around for a while, but there are some wonderful country musicians out there still playing and singing with passion and expertise. In my opinion country (even including 'crossover') is the future. Much of what passes for modern rock, folk, etc is just a bunch of footnotes in music history.

One of the things that impresses me is that if you listen to this same song played in Sioux Falls (it appears to be part of the same tour) the solo is totally different. My grandmother loved Glen Campbell so I've been familiar with the songs he was known for (like this one) since I was a kid in the 70s, but it's been great finding him for myself as a Strat player. He was legit and quite low key. Reminds me of Joe Brown in some ways.

His singing voice brought him fame and folks thought the guitar was a prop. But he played guitar for the Wrecking Crew before he was famous and you don't play with them unless you are at the top of your profession.

You know your stuff Don. I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Campbell in concert. It was in Little Rock, Arkansas (late 60s) and he performed some of his work with the Beach Boys. He moved on to Elvis Presley … If you closed your eyes you would not be able to tell them apart. Not sure if this is true, but I heard he did singing for artists that were unable to perform during sessions.

    • @Jimi_Lee

There are so many lists of top ten. A lot of old timers get lost and forgotten when they do those things, and a lot of those lists have an agenda or obvious biases.

Like Roy Clark, Glen Campbell was truly one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. They excelled in improvisation demonstrating mastery of the guitar. While neither would be considered a master in anyone musical genre they are better labeled as "cross over" guitarists. Excelling in rock, blues, jazz, country, classical and better than 90% of the players in each category I'd wager. Guitar playing phenom's of our time.

He just takes a nice pop song (always liked Galveston) and rips a beautiful, hot, edgy solo on it that fits perfectly.

    • @fumingriley
      @fumingriley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Agreed, the solo stays within the harmony of the song, to me that's what makes it so good. He doesn't go off on some crazy string bending adventure.

Yes he does it so naturally and always plays so uncontrived. There are a few versions of him doing this on Galveston each one 'off the cuff' and flawless. He had fantastic fingers and for us guitar players always leaves you a little bedazzled realising we need to practice harder..lol. Miss him so much:(.

      itzkatsawayo,
You are soooo right. I am just now starting guitar. The Masters, like Mr. Campbell make this stuff look so easy. The world changes when you discover that your right hand really has no clue what the left is doing and, what's more, doesn't seem to care! The finger tips are painful after only a few minutes. These stage performers have had to work through a lot of actual pain and frustration to just "Get good." They earned their place on that stage.
I chose the name, GuiTardZan for a reason.....But I'm getting better. And I do appreciate, in a small way, something of what Glen Campbell accomplished.

@@dkj4183 you're right. I'm a daily guitar player and only got serious about learning music theory in the past year. I had piano lessons about 50 years ago. I have to learn theory by visualizing a keyboard or looking at an image of one (still waiting to buy my own keyboard). I can quickly understand theory on a keyboard, then once I understand it on the keyboard I can easily transfer that knowledge to the fretboard.

It becomes so very obvious where Steve got his influence, and the incredible impact Campbell had on his playing and singing style. The smile says it all.
