- This Lenovo Legion Y720 gaming laptop is in my shop because it's overheating and there's a giant hole in the corner. Even though this computer is in rough shape, the tech is still good for what they need and they want to upgrade the RAM to give it some more power. I ended up upgrading the NVMe to 1TB as well. These are actually really easy laptops to work on but they do suffer from weak hinge mounts on the display lid and overheating.

Have you ever gone through an entire repair just to realize there was a massive problem you missed in the beginning?

I was fixing a laptop and not checking the fan put it all together and still wondering why it was still overheating, I noticed I forgot to plug it in
oh and i forgot to plug the front panel connectors and thought i broke the pc i fixed because pressing the power button did nothing
That 300 Gb storage in 2023 is painful and relatable
Thankfully 1TB NVMe's are super affordable. $40!
Its from 2018, laptops at those times had a 256 gb ssd + 1tb hdd

i hope repair shops around here were as passionate as you. Last time i gave it to servicing they forgot to use thermal paste. So i bought screwdrivers and paste and started doing it all on my own

I have the very same laptop and I still use it to this day since I had it in 2018! Still works like a charm.

I'm an idiot and forgot to check it during my diag. They upgraded to a 1TB NVMe though, so it's a nice laptop!

I remember when in 2017, a fast 128 or 256 gb ssd plus a 1tb HDD was common for gaming. Now he’s are genuine RUST, thankfully nvme is cheap af. I might grab a 1tb and a sata

Fixed one of these same laptops for a coworker, a “repair shop” left ribbon cables unplugged, which was why it kept crashing. Upgraded ram and a sdd, handles all the indi games he wanted to play.
In fairness, I have experience living with that nightmare of storage space for a horrible yet legitimate reason. My computer had one of the first SSDs available and the selling point at the time was "all it really needs is enough space to run the OS"... and then Adobe, which is nesseccary to my job, ate literally everything else.
... no matter how I told it not to. Nearly a decade of registry keys also doesn't help.

My friend was wondering why his old laptop quit working. Then I remembered it was used for at least 5 hours a day for like 4 or 5 years and was never cleaned once. That thing suffocated

This is my first time seeing this channel and I already love this guy.
My Alienware is a 2017 and I have never cleaned it. The fact it still functions is remarkable and at this point, I let it keep going.
Only issue is that the battery percentage drops 1-2% every few months which is hilarious and strange

I have the desktop version of this, the Lenovo y720 Cube, and for some ungodly reason my ssd was shipped with 97 GB, of which my OS uses like 35 right off the bat and of course %appdata% is huge since these pcs are.. what 7 years old now? I think somewhere around that.
What the, 97GB!? Of useless garbage probably. NVMe's are super cheap right now though my man, like $40 for a good 1TB. Clone your drive over and you can download as much 8k homework as your heart desires!

Holly molly! I have that laptop. It's gotten a lot of upgrades along the years, an SSD, over clocked, a new hard disk, regularly cleaned and on a cool pad. Still works great

true story: my old laptop was amazingly hot when playing games, IT CAN'T EVEN PLAY ROBLOX without shutting off due to overheating. I decided to remove the fan and holy shit there was carpet blocking the heatfins. I removed it and my laptop performed better than before.
Life lesson: always add fan cleaning as part of laptop maintenance
Why can't there be technicians or tech shops like you where i live? I'd happily pay whatever the price is for thorough, comprehensive and above all effective repairs.

I'd check why those voltages are 35V and -35V. That replacement board may have something missing/bypassed/shorted/mis-designed. The 12.5V is intended for the 555 from the zener dropping the voltage.
A 555 timer is max 16V for a NE555 timer on TI's website, and that's being exceeded substantially on this board with the higher voltages.
There's probably other parts on those voltage rails that are getting stressed from the higher voltages also
As for the zener's, use the higher wattage ones. They are usually a little larger, and dissipate heat better. Digikey has lots of options

Have you ever had an inspiron 7559 come through there? I’ve got one as a backup pc and surprisingly it hasn’t had any heating problems despite not being cleaned out for 5 years. My only issue is the hinges are not designed very well.
You know what? I've only had 1 and it was some weird sound issue. I never see those things, so either they're really reliable or not many people bought them. I do remember the hinges were sketchy af though when I was working on it
@@SalemTechspertsoh yeah, it did have some sound issue with Realtek drivers but i fixed that just by overwriting the Realtek ones with some generic microsoft drivers i found online.

Had an lenovo tab3 7 essential that had been drop kicked across a gym, thrown at the ground "accidently" too many times to count, left out in the hot sun for 20 minutes, and it still worked for 4 years. The only problems it had were a small part of the screen, not accepting touch, and the back falling off if dropped.
Got a new tablet and gave it a send-off with 8 hits from a metal bat. (it took until the 10th hit to dent even a bit and would recommend this tablet for any apocalypse)
As the guy who gets handed the software work after the repairs are finished I felt that storage. Now its time to ask if they want to play file cleanup or buy new storage
That's still more storage than my entire fleet of drives.

I have one of those laptops and even though mine is clean and is absolutely never used without a cooling pad, it still heats up a lot. I'm surprised that thing still works.

In the beginning I was like, check for low storage first before anything else! Watch the whole clip, and laughed at the end because I also felt that same reaction before. After doing all of that just to find out their was a bigger issue, the pain is so relatable.😅
If the customer managed to treat that laptop so badly I'm sorry to say but there's no saving it, it will go back to that state if in the hands of the same careless owner.

Seeing videos like this makes me wonder about the condition of my old laptop. Whenever I try to turn it on it sounds like an airplane trying to take off and takes 5-10 minutes to load. 😅 I bet it's caked in dust on the inside.
