Back when Windows 11 was announced with those ridiculous requirements, journalists noticed a Surface AiO with 7820HK in the Microsoft store. So the hypocrites just added it to the supported CPU list. That's why you have the support
And yet when you disable that asinine TPM2.0 check Windows 11 runs flawlessly including all updates on much older architecture. Have it running on my 2012 HP Z620 workstation as fast as greased lightning.
I remembered using Thinkpads in school and they were always junky so I wrote them off for a long time. I recently found myself in need of a decent laptop for a fair price. I got a T480 with a i7-8650 with Nvidia mx150 for around 200 usd and I couldn't be happier. It far surpassed my expectations and has become my favorite laptop I've ever used/owned. It came with an empty SSD so I installed Debian. I know the video is about the T470p but I just wanted to say that I have come around to liking Thinkpads, and now understand the cult following.
I Bought this same model of T470p nearly a year earlier, it's great for what it is. The reason why it supports Windows 11 il because of the TPM 2.0 protocol implemented in the i7-7820HQ, wich is not present in other CPUs from Intel's 7th gen. The main differences between T470p (this top tier model) and the T480 (the top model too) are the internal battery, wich let you change the external without turning off, the "u" variant of CPU, wich have a consumption 3x times smaller than the "HQ" variant (15 VS 45 watts max) wich provide better battery life on the T480 by 25% if you have the biggest external battery on both. The second main important point is of course the generation of the components, and i think about the MX-150 vs the 940MX. Yes, this will not be a enormous difference, but the fact that the MX-150 is a disguised GT-1030 wich uses the Pascal architecture versus the 940MX on the previous one, gives us better power efficiency and a +50/60% performance on benchmarks on average. In conclusion, T480 is better if you want biggest Battery (up to 24Whr internal +72Whr external and a "U" CPU) and if you need a little extra boost on graphics performances with a more modern GPU. Overall, those two laptops are very High end "Old" machines, wich will for flawlessly for standard day to day usage for most people. Nice video, if you want more information on Lenovo platforms, you can see their PDF on internet, here are the ones of those 2 platforms, but you only need to tap "T-XXX platform specs" to find all the infos on the lenovo platform you want to know about. I recommend people to look at the X270 platform for those who want 12,5" laptop experience, it will not support WIN 11 but with a Win 10 of a Linux it's absolutely perfect for long outdoor trips. In defence to the T470p, batteries can be cheaper due to them being used for many generations (T440-T460) and (X240-X270). Nice you mention the X270, a great small form factor ThinkPad. I'll be making a video on that soon. Thanks for your time👍

The T470p is a great machine and heavily underrated. Find yourself a good model with enough ram and you'll see it fly though. Though, limit your expectations as it is getting quite old. But for simple editing and rendering it should do just fine.
I think you install windows a little backwards. Don't let it connect. Make a local account. Then run bloaty nosy. Then let Windows get the drivers and updates. Then debloat again. Then get official drivers for the graphics. But hey, you do you. I do 2-4 installs of 11 per week. And the P denotes workstation class. The T480 is obviously going to be a regular T class. Everything is connected via x2 PCIe lanes anyway, not x4 like it should be. The HDD Caddy connector is not SATA, have a look there are extra pins. It was a very short lived Server connection for PCIe 2.5" drives.
I have T470 and was thinking about getting this model, but in the end I increased my budget and bought max specs P52 (i7 8850H, 64 GB RAM, P3200 Max-Q).
No type-c and a cpu with a high tdp make me lean heavily towards the t480. I'd rather have somewhat better battery life and type-c since i have a desktop that i use for real work
I understand your view, but for raw performance this is a better choice. I agree that battery life would be better on the T480 since it had two and U Series CPUs.
Are you sure about that? I’m pretty sure the 8th gen U processors match/slightly better than the 7th gen HQ ones at quite a bit lower power requirements.
I disagree, get a T460P instead. While having almost the same performance in most regards, it stays considerably cooler than the T470p which allows for an almost silent use while doing office tasks etc.. The T470P on the other hand lets its fan run way more often, regardless if you get the 7700HQ or 7820HQ.
Nice! -- QUESTION -- I ordered a used T480 with the FHD/1080P screen. However, the sent the one with a "touch" screen which is a feature I would never use. It is also FHD/1080p. My question is, I can return it and get the one without "touch". Do they both view the same or is the Touch screen worse quality or a battery hog? Please help. I must decide quickly and I think they intentionally stuck me with this screen.
Hi, thanks for your question. In regards to touch screen laptops, they do use more resources in the background so yes it would lead to a lower battery life. But not by much. However, they also tend to keep their value than their non-touch counterparts so if you were to sell it on later then it'd be a better investment. Also, I'd always opt for a FHD 1080p screen as they look much better. The 768p screens are TN and awful. IMO, I think you got quite lucky but it's up to you whether you want to return or not.
@@cephacore ...intersting... My T480 has the touch with 1080p and the UHD 620 graphics vs HD 620. I assumed that I wanted to non-touch screen and the basic HD 620 graphics. They said they would exchange it no problem. Would you recommend that I keep it and be done. I thought that the UHD 620 caused heating issues and contributed little and that the touch screen was not a clear as the "normal" 1080p screen but now I am not sure. I can't find any direct side by side comparison of the two. Some say it gets 30 percent worse battery life but not sure why if that is in fact true.
I own T580 (two batteries, one is removable. really good option). T470 look very thick to me. T490 is great, but T490S is even better (I own both). After owning X1 carbon 5 for few days, and if I can go back a year ago, I will focus on X1 Carbon Gen 6 or/and X1 Yoga Gen 6 (both at ebay today around $150. Instead of owning so many T490/T490s/T580 (all under $125). P70 also great. 15.3" screen will not make it to my choices.
I still kinda prefer t480p since you have 4c/8t processor aswell and since it is a U version, it can be kept cool pretty easily with almost the same cooling setup. There's also an mx150 variant but i guess it is rare and can be rather pricey, also a powerbridge if someone needed an extra battery
Did they make a T480p? Thought they stopped that naming scheme and made the P52. Either way, yes the MX150 is highly sought after since it's great for battery life
@@cephacore oopss sorry, my bad, a little bit of typo, it's supposed to be only t480. Yeahh the mx150 variant is great but hard to find in the used market sadly hahahah
Make sure you don’t get a bricked Motherboard BIOS Update. The bricked update if it won’t downgrade is a killing event of the motherboard. Good luck. Enable the ability to self flash to the last known BIOS that hopefully was working.
The 7th gen cpus aren't officially supported under Windows 11, but you can install Windows 11, you just can't upgrade from Windows 10 has been my experience.
Actually if your laptop has tpm 2.0 it should support Win 11, the 8 gen is a simplification because all 8 gen laptops have tpm 2.0. Most of the business class 6, 7 gens have tpm 2.0 but personally i would no install Win 11 on the dual core ones.
I think thats not as good when it comes to gaming, the T480 I found has a thunderbolt 4 port which i can use to plug in an external gpu using gpu adapters or docks. Either way that does have a stronger cpu but without a thunderbolt is kindof a hard choice
Yeah I was looking at it more in the way of CPU power, which the T470p excels at. Wouldn't really game on a ThinkPad but if you were, an external GPU setup would be the way.
@@cephacore Kinda sad they didn't put thunderbolt on it, but if I say more which laptop is better now than the ThinkPads is the Dell Latitude 5420 (if I remember correctly) it has 2 thunderbolt ports and can get under 20k Pesos for second hand, which has an i5 11th Gen and an amazing screen Ps: You should defo check the capabilities of that dell laptop out, since I'm planning on getting that as an upgrade to my t480

yeah I used to buy used parts for upgrading my pc over the years, mostly upgrading used gpu. last one was 1060 then I replaced with rx 580, both were artifacting after being used no more than a year. after all that hassle I decide to grab brand new rx6600, I hope it'll last at least 5 years or more.
I normally look out for refurbished sellers on eBay who offer some sort of warranty. Other than that, yes it's a big risk and makes sense why ppl buy new.
Have always bought computers used, have never had a problem and have saved my self a lot of money by now. You just have to be sure who you are buying from, check reviews of sellers etc.
Yeah the i7 actually performs worse than the i5 due to the thermal throttling. - order yourself a Honeywell PT9750 thermal pad and Re-paste and clean your heatsink. Will see a massive improvement.
This laptop doesn't have USB-C display out. it's e-waste. If you wanted to save money dell precisions and Latitudes fill this price gap nicely. Alternatively the Peak computing is getting p51 workstation with pascal based P5000. its based of desktop gtx 1070 with 16g of Vram. and my unit was 450 usd.
You have to consider the price I bought this for, which is a hell of a lot less than a P51 workstation which normally go for £300. This wasn't so deserves to be uplifted. I don't agree it's e-waste. HP Stream's, IdeaPads from 2016 are e-waste as they are obsolete and there are simply better options for similar prices. This is one of them.

@@ExtremalMetal correct, I highly recommend it.
Do you know which battery sits flush with this laptop? All I can find online is these 72wh really big ones that practically doubles the thickness.
only the 24wh ones sit flat, the 48 and 72wh are quite chunky
I just bought a Thinkpad L380 with i7 8550u with 16gb and 512gb ssd. I paid $220, good condition no damage. It is a good deal?? It seems quite fast. 2884 on cinebench r23.
Seems good, I've got my t480 with i5-8350u with 16gb and 256gb ssd for 205$ including tax and shipping to literally another continent.
do you reccomend this for simple editing and render video with capcut software?
I prefer massgrave + atlasOS
I have T470 and was thinking about getting this model, but in the end I increased my budget and bought max specs P52 (i7 8850H, 64 GB RAM, P3200 Max-Q).
That's a great spec, the P52 is an awesome ThinkPad. Would love to get my hands on one 🙏
@@cephacore The raw performance is admittedly very cool
@@Coleen-Love For longevity avoid touch screens.
Also do you think yours can run Adobe well
I own T580 (two batteries, one is removable. really good option).
A T580 is deffo something I want to get ahold of. People rave about the T480 but the bigger screen is a positive for some
How's the performance of the battery, Is it good?
Yeah it's decent. I picked up a 72wh battery with 84% battery health. Lasts around 3-5 hrs with normal use 👍
How does this compare to the X1Cgen5?
If you're going for portability and battery life, go for the X1 C Gen 5. The T470p is purely for max performance and workstation use 👍
Put Linux in
Make sure you don’t get a bricked Motherboard BIOS Update. The bricked update if it won’t downgrade is a killing event of the motherboard. Good luck. Enable the ability to self flash to the last known BIOS that hopefully was working.
Damn that's crazy, I've always disabled automatic BIOS updates on laptops, better safe than sorry
I'm still on my T440p....might be time for an upgrade.
Solid workhorse that once was
The 7th gen cpus aren't officially supported under Windows 11, but you can install Windows 11, you just can't upgrade from Windows 10 has been my experience.
The i7 7820HQ is actually on the list of supported processors for Windows 11. Quite strange tbh.
@@cephacore Kinda sad they didn't put thunderbolt on it, but if I say more which laptop is better now than the ThinkPads is the Dell Latitude 5420 (if I remember correctly) it has 2 thunderbolt ports and can get under 20k Pesos for second hand, which has an i5 11th Gen and an amazing screen
Ps: You should defo check the capabilities of that dell laptop out, since I'm planning on getting that as an upgrade to my t480
Make sure to replace Windows with Linux. Massive upgrade.
the laptop could seriously need an undervolt on the CPU and/or GPU. That thing ran way too hot and thermal throttled hard when playing games.
I thought about this too, cleaning it out and repasting didn't do much. I'll take a better look at this, already got an update vid in the works 👍
@@cephacore A lot of these corporate workstation machines carry CPUs that look great on paper, but run them with underdimentioned cooling solutions unfortunately, so they throttle hard.
Do more like this laptops. Used old budget laptop with hq cpus and dedicated gpu. I'm tired watching U series laptops I'm looking for used Lap for my work is need little bit more powerful then t470p
Will do, I've got a few more ideas in mind. Stay tuned 👌
£70? This thing cost atleast 168 pound in my country malaysia
I got really lucky with mine. £168 is still a great price tbh 👍

I would say get a T14 at this point. Depends on budget of course. But get this, flip it, then buy a T14
The T14 doesn't have the removable battery. I'd say the replacement to this would be the P14.

Man, kinda makes my W541 look like a chump. Well, other than the screen. Half the reason I got the W541 was that screen, very nice for what it is.
I'd say the W541 was defo one of the best back in the day, especially for performance. Keep it, hope it's usable for years more
My rich uncle got me one of these and It was 900 dollars new you think my uncle got scammed?
Yep
@ oh yeah it came with headphones too so
Good luck... I established a rule for myself more than 2 decades ago, never buy used or refurbished computers, you're just buying someone else's lemon. I was stung twice once in each category. Not worth the hassles.
yeah I used to buy used parts for upgrading my pc over the years, mostly upgrading used gpu. last one was 1060 then I replaced with rx 580, both were artifacting after being used no more than a year. after all that hassle I decide to grab brand new rx6600, I hope it'll last at least 5 years or more.
