500 WHP Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo - One Take TheSmokingTire

  • We recently drove our friend Dan's 300ZX 2+2 which had been converted from NA to Twin-Turbo spec, and it makes a stout 325 WHP. This one, a Turbo from birth, makes nearly 200 HP more than that, with a 6" shorter wheelbase.

Saw one of these pull into the parking lot of a grocery store I was coming out of one day. Then some woman probably in her early 60s came out of it and it immediately made my day. Totally wasn't expecting it, but I have nothing but respect and admiration for her. What an absolute legend.

I assure you that if SpecialtyZ in Chatsworth, CA worked on the car, it's no joke. Those guys know what parts work and what don't. They're helping me with my 300Z project as we speak. If you're doubting he can get 500 rwhp on E85, well you had better do your research. Just ask your 800+ hp Supra friends. We can get a ton of hp out of these 3.0L motors. The next gen, of course, is the Nissan GT-R that's smoking almost everyone in 1/2 mile shootouts. Forced induction + e85 = God's gift to horsepower junkies.

Man that kind of powerband is perfect for the street. Good turbo shove at 3500rpm is PERFECT. To hell with all those big turbo cars that spool at 4500rpm and give you 2000rpm of powerband.
Pushing those stock turbos pretty hard, but neat to see it making that kind of power with them.

I miss my 300zx. I had it briefly for 2 years before selling it. I was moving plus it had a number of problems that needed addressing. The previous owner did a number of modifications on it (engine, sound, interior). Had about high 300s whp. So much fun. Sooooo much fun. Could take off so quick and provide fun daily driving. Amazing car. Wish I could get it back. Will go down in history as one of the best out of Japan along with the R34 Skyline and mk4 Supra.

These are great cars. My second car as a high school student was a 92 TT and it served me well. Making power with the VG30DETT is extremely easy although even the 300hp from factory is more than enough to put you back in your seat. Anyone interested in owning a 300ZX needs to be prepared for a maintenance nightmare however. With an engine bay so cramped that not even the smallest of hands can reach critical components and a level of complication like a Swiss watch on steroids, don't count on doing much maintenance unless you have a lift. If you can find a TT with low miles, BUY IT. Prices on early 90s TTs with low miles are approaching original MSRP and are going up all the time. Mine had 20,000 miles on it (one owner) when I bought it and I sold it with 48,000 miles less than six years later and got $5,000 more than I paid for it.

This is a great car. Speciality Z in chatsworth know what they are doing and they love the conversion of E85. I have a great car build and they toned it. Check out my chanel and vids of the car: Z4ronin chasing GTR, 458....
I am a second owner much like him, clean car, its my 4th Z. It was stock turbos and engine with mods and ECU, Intake, exhaust down pipes suspension etc... and it did 500 hp 91 Octane . The car is capable of the hp however it eventually blow a rod thru the motor going well over 170 mph ( video will be released soon).
yes the stock turbos can handle it and i prefer it due to quick spool especially from low and mid torque. These cars f this era were much more capable than what was produced vs no a days the cars claim much more than it is actually produced with.
The car now is completely rebuild engine, piston, rods, block, every wire and hose, turbos stock still but rebuilt with a little extra gig, new wire harness you name it.. i assume it will produce well over 500 without E85.
when car is done tuned we will have it here on the smoking tires

He made a really good point about comparing the Z to a Corvette from the same era. If you compare a '90 Z to a '90 corvette, the vette will look dated inside and out while the Z still looks relevant today.

i would love to have one of those cars, my friend at my old job had 300zx turbo that was pretty beat up but sounded absolutely MEAN. but my god 4 cams, 2 turbos? that's a very expensive engine rebuild.

  • @iknowwazup

These are definitely one of my favs from that era, never been keen on the 2 plus 2 but the other guys was modded some and had twin turbo with engine swap so it was better at least. This guys is much nicer though, with good power. Sold mine in 98 or 99 for the first vr4, always wanted to get another one, maybe I will.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I prrefer the well sorted TT setup to the V8, but if you're starting with an NA or blown motor project car, the LS is a strong choice

Oh shit. I also got a 93 2-seater factory TT in that Blue. Mine is all stock at 160,000 miles though.
    I previously owned a 93 n/a 2+2 in the same Blue.
From the perspective of owning both, I would point out that the 2+2 rolls a bit more through corners and the TT is much faster obviously. Although the NA was an awesome car to have being young and on a budget. The 300zx has been my favorite car since I was 12 and still is 12 years later. LONG LIVE THE Z!
