  • I've been building a full custom car audio system with multiple amplifiers 10 speakers and subwoofers and plenty of wiring. Now I need to make custom A-Pillars in order to mount the 3" mid range speakers high above the dash. How is this done? Well, it starts with a good plan and making custom speaker rings. Lets get that done!

    I just wanted to thank you for being one of the many knowledgeable TH-camrs that are not only willing, but also capable of making these how-to videos.
    I am currently in the middle of making my very first super tweeter pods.
    I'm kind of regretting not videoing it because I put them in my c-pillars and I haven't found anything like that here on TH-cam yet.
    I didn't beam them into anybody's ear either. I placed them up high above the head, as if somebody sitting in the backseat would have somebody shouting over the back of their head above them.
    I'm curious what it will sound like within both firing toward the center console from above.
    Thanks again for all the knowledge and inspiration.

No 3D printing, no fancy CNC cutting etc. lets face it, more than half the people watching your videos dont own a fancy 3d printer or fancy CNC machine to cut out those fancy thin rings. We only have a drill or cordless and a jigsaw.

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm. Thats a pretty good point. I just dont want to hack up the assembly, I can tell it goes pretty deep under the dash, I'd want to take it apart so it can be reinstalled to go back to OEM, and not really in the mood to pull a dash...

    • @caseytbss
      @caseytbss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CarAudioFabrication yeah mine were in the sail panels, so they were about a foot long and removed pretty easy. Multi tool and cut it off flush and cap it would allow yours to be put back together with aluminum ducting tape if going back to oem. Might not look the prettiest under the skirt if a person looked, but hey.... I’m assuming that’s only if getting traded. Also a person could look up the parts explosion diagram online and it would show how far back that part goes if you did want to remove.
      Just throwing this stuff out there as ideas for anyone else that’s getting ready to build pillars.
      Did you see in one of the Facebook groups how a fella made a deal and he heats the a pillar and remolds it to create a tweeter spot that looks totally OEM? WILD! Looked amazing!

    I would keep those mids on axis as much as possible away from the glass. I made this mistake in my system, and after many hours of tweaking the sound via DSP, unfortunately I had to eventually put them on axis to achieve the best sound. Remember off axis performance works two ways they are going to bounce a lot of sound off the glass which will boost the 800 to 1200 hertz range, and no matter how much DSP you apply it never will sound perfect.

    • @twinkyunouwantmycreamfilli8297
      @twinkyunouwantmycreamfilli8297 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If available, you would refer to the frequency response graphs that will show how they performed at varying degrees compared to on axis.
      Not all manufacturers provide this info, though. But typically the more respected ones do.

    Can you mount the midrange in the lower kick panels aimed toward the driver (with an angle similar to the tweeters) and time align them? I have the same vehicle and did it with 6x9 3 way components and it doesn't sound too bad. I just don't know how much better it will sound because I can't fabricate and didn't want speaker pods sticking out.

  • @thedalillama

    Does anyone have experience with the Focal 3" and 4" mids? I have a huge A-pillar and am wondering if it's worth going with the larger the mid. The door will hold a separately controlled 6.5" and is too far away from the A-pillar for my taste.
    Unfortunately, the O.D. on the 4" is quite a bit larger than the 3". So, this isn't a no-brainer.

  • @weduhpeople8504
    @weduhpeople8504 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was debating on buying some aluminum pods from a company in Germany that produces it for specific brand speakers. It comes with hardware that allows for speaker movement that could be locked down for optimal speaker aiming. The con is that it would be enticing to thieves whereas a custom molded pods into the A piller would look almost factory part of the car and less enticing to thieves as well as can be more stealth. What are your thoughts? Also for a common car like the 10th gen Honda civic could you make them for popular speakers and buy them from you? Pretty sure most of your audience doesn’t have all the sophisticated fabrication tools and modeling software you have. So it’s not a viable diy for the shade tree installer.

    Hello Mark!, My name is Franz and I have big question i know you can answer easily.
    1 year ago i got a 4 channel amplifier capable of 75 W rms per channel at 4 ohm and 100 W rms at 2 ohm per channel.
    I hooked up 4 coaxial full range speakers of 4 ohm (One per channel). The problem was
    i was lacking of highs. So i am thinking about adding extra tweeters to my system by putting
    them in parallel with the coaxial speakers with their respective crossover (crossover only for the
    tweeters because the coaxial are full range(they have mid bass and tweeter)).
    Is that solution ok, or is it wrong? (For example: 4 ohm coaxial in parallel to 4 ohm tweeter per
    channel: So the amplifier is gonna see 2 ohm per channel, so my max power per channel
    is going to be 100 W rms) Mathematically i know, the impedance is not linear in the
    frequency axis and the coaxial is gonna request more power than the extra tweeter butttt....
    And here is another question, if i turn up the volume slowwwwly,
    how i know when my amplifier or tweeter is gonna blow up or start clipping?
    Post data: My neighbor has an oscilloscope hehehe.
    My actual system is: (JBL 600Wrms 4ohm mono amp ==> subwoofer Rockford P3 600Wrms 4ohm)
    (Rockford prime amp r400-d4 ==> 4 coaxial speakers = Rockford T1650)

    (in the future ==> one new amp for adding only midrange woofer and bullet tweeter)

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 3d printer with this size of build volume would be in the $100k club. Coming up with a model for this would require a 3d scanner (well over $20k). Unless you mean a 3d printed pod that is just bolted to the A-Pillar, in which case I don't really like that look, it feels cheap.

    • @marklashta814

      @@CarAudioFabrication I mean just printing the speaker rings. The exact same plastic parts as what you made. But instead of laser cut ( congrats on the new laser cutter if thats yours you're using!) just 3d print the rings. Then do the same fiberglassing as you have planned.

    • @RumpleBlumpkins
      @RumpleBlumpkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marklashta814 I would think a 3d printed ring has a significant amount more of time involved. The print time for a 3d printer vs cut time of the laser is probably a big factor. 3 minute cut time, vs im sure probably 1-2 hour print time?
