After much research I’m going to buy one of these for my bungalow home. Placed against the outside wall with ‘V’ outlet pipe, one through the wall into bedroom and one into lounge. Manrose flap vents on the inside. Small marine ply canopy to protect from worst of the weather. Put away in garage in summer and cap off inlet pipes. Got to be cheaper than keep on firing up my oil fired boiler every time. Nothing ventured - nothing gained.
Hi Martin I've just filtered 5L of old engine oil I had . I did a 50/50 mix 5L engine oil & 5L Diesel . I can say it runs great & seams to put more heat out .
Indeed it does just as you say but it also soots it up much quicker. I have had my heater over 4 years now i also use the afterburner controler and have never had to take mine apart to clean the soot out.
They are absolutely marvellous Martin. The one in the living room only needs to be on for half an hour and it warms the whole of downstairs, so obviously the shed is very warm. I think our local marina sells red diesel, so will try there. I look forward to your experiments. Take care, Jeff
Hi Martin I've been watching your diesel heater videos with interest. The cost of using electric heating has become so expensive I think a lot of people are looking at these heaters as an alternative. I've seen one man on TH-cam using this type of heater to heat his house. He has heater in a box outside though. Keep up the good work Martin very good content. 👍
I bought a diesel heater years ago to heat up my garage when I was doing odd jobs. I think I paid £40 used for it, first modification was to put in a fuel filter and run it on veggie oil as its about 40% cheaper than diesel. It runs absolutely fine on neat veggie oil, except when the temperature drops below zero and I have to add about 20% diesel to the tank. When the garage is warm I can go back to pure vegetable oil again. Still not cheap to run, but cheaper than an electric heater.
Fitted mine yesterday, was very easy after watching these vids. Until I wondered why it was sucking instead of blowing 😳. Fitted it back to front, assumed fan was by the outlet 🙄🙄. Cable ties back up the rubber pipe clips to stop leaks, job done....
Going to build a small cabin next year, plan on using two of these. A bigger one for the living area, and a small one for the bedroom. Run the whole thing off a couple solar panels charging a few batteries.
Really enjoy your videos. I just got mine a couple days ago. But I was going crazy trying to get it to prime, pushing the "settings and Right arrow buttons" together. I was getting no results. I have the same blue interface you have, but maybe mine is an older version of the Blue face control panel, watched a video someone made about a year ago with this controller, they got the primer pump to work by holding both the Left and Right buttons down together and that worked for me. Hope that helps a few people out there.
I think the law may have changed in this country a few years ago regarding waste engine oil heaters so maybe something to look into before you go ahead and use old engine oil. What you can and what you do are 2 separate things😉. Looking forward to the next one👍
Thanks Martin great review ,make a little guard /heat shield to fasten on to the two studs on exhaust manifold to prevent heat damage to the fuel line thanks again Martin 👍👨🏻🏭
I just bought same unit. Appreciate your video. I need to figure out how to safely plumb the exhaust thru the wall. Stick frame construction in Oregon US with wood cladding. House is heated with forced air gas, quite reasonable on cost. Electric has gone costly, and currently heating garage with 2Kw resistance heater, and shop with 3Kw resistance heater. My last electric bill was 3.5x what we pay to heat the house. At current rates, diesel is cheaper for temperature rise while in use. I plan to keep electric at 52F when not in use. Thanks.
Don't use any thing but diesel red is OK I had a faulty one and had to strip it down and decoke it it was thick with soot but it has worked fine for a year now every thing you want to know about these heater is on David Mclukie channel love your channel keep up the good work
A cool mod to these would be to utilize peltier devices maybe with some sort of water jacket hooked with the exhaust and let them charge a smallish 12v battery. So it could be really "portable/offgrid" and on the go type of thing... And with a wee bit more electronics it could have a couple of USB ports so you get heat and convert the waste/exhaust heat to electricity...
Martin, you may need to pair the remote to the unit. I’ve got the same controller and remote with the heater in my camper van. It’s been in a few years, but to pair I think you press the on button and the ok button at the same time on the remote. It should then say “pairing” on the remote screen. You then go to the controller and press the arrow key on the right and HFA or something similar should come on the controller screen. It should be paired then. Looking forward for your alternative fuel tests 👍
We’ll done mate, it’s a learning curve with these things, but overall I’m happy with mine, I’ve just made a frame to locate it externally, I don’t want sawdust being sucked in, bare in mind a Briggs Stratton 750 micron filter is half the size of normal ones and only a fiver, best of luck.
You're a good man Martin sharing all this information. I'm about to order one of these units for my cold workshop and set it up like you have shown. Thanks so much for sharing.
Great video👍 just fitted a normal diesel heater in a box and was worried it might overheat or something but portable one seems fine all crammed in that unit so you’ve put my mind at rest🥵👍
Martin, if you can get it, gearbox oil is just a grade or two different in viscosity from diesel or paraffin fuels, so that might work better than used engine oil, because it's just oil with no soot in it.
Nice one Martin, watched your other video, really like the idea of it being in a case all in one, I've a log cabin garage and thinking this is the best option, loving your channels and down to earth videos, keep doing what you are doing it's a winner. Graham.
Not sure I'd want this type of heater inside a building I was going to be in, just from a carbon monoxide point of view. The components look a bit cheap. I'd be inclined to have the whole unit outside, and plumb the heat outlet through the wall. Some white spirit in the diesel would stop it freezing up in really cold weather too. Absolutely ideal for the type of use you're using it for though, and very economical if you can get it running on old engine oil etc.
Nice one Mart , a mate of mine used to run his diesel Astra mk1 on cooking oil , I will ask him what he thinks it could run on , he’s a top engineer and knows his stuff, hope you are well mate
just screw on a 3x3 block of wood each end to lift it clear for exhaust and air filter pipe use the clamp bolt air filter pipe onto rear of case next to controller that lets you still take off outer cover and buy an extra long exhaust pipe wrapped with heat tape and keep it as a use anywere unit in poly tunnel or other cabin spray booth or house say you were diy plastering a wall wanting it to dry off fast or you had a burst pipe and need to dry out a room it got many many uses a a portable take anywere unit make a little cat flap for exhaust in other side of cabin to shove exhaust out
The cable size should be an adequate size to carry the design fault current of the unit. That's basic design formula before ti would have gone into production.

So glad you are going to move the muffler and the fresh air in for the combustion chamber Sir. The mufflers are very leaky and it's better to not have to compete for air with any furnace. Cheers! New subscriber here.
Hi again Martin. I've taken the lounge and bought one of these units since my last question. Last two quick questions. 1) Will this unit need to be primed every time it is turned on or does it only need doing on installation? 2) Roughly how long would a new car battery last before it needs recharging? A rough idea is fine, Assuming you haven't tested battery life yet. 1 hour, 10, 20, 100? Cheers mate.
One thing to note is it's not an 8Kw heater it's 3Kw at best. This needs to be taken into consideration if you have a bigger area to heat. The heaters are great when used in the correct size shed/garage etc.
Definately change the exhust setup, the silencers are designed to be outside, ie under a camper van etc, they are not seem welded plus as you mentioned in a previous video they have a hole to allow condensation to escape
Thanks the vid Martin. I've tested these heaters with countless different combinations of engine oil mixtures and the end result is always the same, the burn chamber clogs up eventually, and the unit fails to start (the carbons in used engine oil are just too heavy for the heater to cope with). I would normally say, don't use engine oil in them, but if you've got a unit for testing purposes, give it a go and when it clogs up, make a vid on how to clean a clogged up burn chamber.

Re the fuel filter . After a couple of years use running mine on red diesel there is quite a lot of debris in the bottom of the tank that has come with the fuel .
I think that eunning 100% heating oil will probably ruin your fuel pump after a while. Diesel is a better lubricant. I think a 50/50 mix would be fine though. Great video. My heater was ordered today.
A really interesting video, one comment, if you put those jubilee clips on the other way round you'd have better access through the slot. A question. With those inlet and exhaust pipes coming out of the bottom does this mean that you can't stand the unit on a flat surface for example the floor? Don't put the air inlet outside, you'll use a lot more fuel if you do. Good luck with the alternative fuel tests, looking forward to seeing them.
Correct the so called supplied flexi will not bend close enough to where clamped. Tried as much as i could with a jig and vice can only now get bottom of pipe to be 3/4" below. Obviously need this to stand on the floor so will be making some sort of 90 degree bend to clear rubber matting. Air inlet i have routed through rear foot hole and up the back. Used lower hole below pump with a stand off around 1/2" long and can then use the longer supplied screws.
@@retrorestore That's very disappointing. Really it isn't portable if you have to modify it to make it stand up, a big design flaw, what a shame. Thanks for replying so quickly.
Just got one of these. Set it up yesterday, Any suggestions as what best to use to protect the shed and insulation form catching fire. I have done the exhaust rap but still like to do something more just for pease of mind.
I'm looking forward to firing mine up soon. Today I got the exhaust mounted through the wall. After watching your video, I mounted a steel plate on the wall for the pipe to go through like you did. I just need to find a power supply for it. How many amps does this heater pull?
Really informative video, watching with interest, just wondered how much fuel these heaters use when in use, also whether they have a timer function so you can decide when you want them to 'fire up' ? I have a cold garage so the timer function would be really useful.
To anyone running one of these. Any major nasty smells with this unit when vented properly. Will it make the interior of what you are heating smell like diesel at all? Thanks.

@@retrorestore That's very disappointing. Really it isn't portable if you have to modify it to make it stand up, a big design flaw, what a shame. Thanks for replying so quickly.
Hi, can you explain why fresh air inlet placed outside uses a lot more fuel?
You got me. I’m now a new follower. Good luck
Thanks for the sub and glad you like the video Andrew.
Love the content mate, but please ensure you have a couple of Carbon Monoxide detectors about.
Thank you
I recon waste oils car/chip and others be interesting to see. Keep it up for the next video 👍
Mate ur accent is class. I want u in a guy Richie movie. 🇮🇪🍻👌
Just got one of these. Set it up yesterday, Any suggestions as what best to use to protect the shed and insulation form catching fire. I have done the exhaust rap but still like to do something more just for pease of mind.
You could try rockwool with the foil protecter on
Great content Martin 👌 thanks 👊
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the video but what controler do you think is better the new one you got ot the one you already have
As long as they do what they are supposed to do, I have no preference.
Very informative video , thankyou
ooooh Sharon will love that
Have you fitted an in line switch between batteries and heater ? Ive 2 batteries, 24 volt
I'm looking forward to firing mine up soon. Today I got the exhaust mounted through the wall. After watching your video, I mounted a steel plate on the wall for the pipe to go through like you did. I just need to find a power supply for it. How many amps does this heater pull?
Probably about 8 amps at start up and 1 amp when running.
I just fitted a 12v 15a bench top supply. £29 plus vat. From TLC electrical.
@@tomf4547 I ended up using an old PC power supply I had lying around. Works great!
10 A
Really informative video, watching with interest, just wondered how much fuel these heaters use when in use, also whether they have a timer function so you can decide when you want them to 'fire up' ? I have a cold garage so the timer function would be really useful.
Yes they have a timed feature Dave.
Hi mate great video, quick question could i use stainless pipe for the air pipe that goes outside?
Yes you can!
Hi i was wondering should i put the black air take filter out side?
7:00 "That's what she said..." 🤣😂🤣
Martin nice Video. QUESTION ..what's that big white cabinet in your video?
I think you mean my powder coating oven
So witch one works best
Very interesting video Martin 👍👍
On the floor generally creates more heat as it rises!
Great video Martin
Thanks Steve👍
Excellent job thank you
I had a x5 with a diesel heater built in from New
Great review again Martin but sadly still no good for me as i can't vent it outside 👍👍👍👍
Great video
a bit of topic but what is the wooden box you have ao the bench made from decking board mate and a good video this has i thinking of buying one
That box is a lawnmower engine stand for working on lawnmower engines.
To anyone running one of these. Any major nasty smells with this unit when vented properly. Will it make the interior of what you are heating smell like diesel at all? Thanks.
No diesel smells as it's is vented to the outside.
thanks very much for the response.
good job love it

Haha, Yes I saw that too lol
Mine works on a mixture of kerosene and old cooking oil from local chippy. Cheapest way imo only downside i have to filter the oil before mixing
Thanks for sharing
What's involved in filtering it? Do you need specific items to do it? Interested in giving it a go
@@knobon i use a cheese cloth and a funnel to filter into 30 gallon drums. repeat process until oil is clear (can get messy). I brought some pond filter/pumps on a carboot hopefully i can make the process less messy
@@bigtony8667 Cheers Mate will give it a go
Hi. Do you have any idea where I can get the inner heat tube, mine has totally melted, Also is there any way to limit the amount of soot these generate. All I use is road diesel.
No, sorry
Ive just bought one of these to heat my workshop. Do you know what size ducting i need for the hot air feed? Ive not received it yet but im going to need one at least 6ft so I'll order one now before it arrives but unsure on size? Thanks
they sell it on ebay.
Will these run on kerosene? I'm thinking of installing on outside with heat pipe coming inside, a bit like an air con unit.
Yes it will
