Incredible, exhaustive coverage on all the heaters you presented. This has to be the best diesel heater review I have ever gleaned on TH-cam. I learned a lot. thank you so much. This is definitely a must save.
Great video, both informative and entertaining. Having made a few myself I can appreciate the amount of effort you have put into it. Well done. 👍🏻
Thanks mate, yeah it did take quite a while a put together. We just kept adding more and more until we had to say thats enough
I've had my Hcalory for a year now. Never had it smoke and still runs great. Always run it every month up to tempature on high to keep it clean when it's warm outside.
I use the cheap green hose👍. Works fine.
Just an update: I ordered an HLN 2kW heater from Kevin today and responses were fast and order process was simple. The wifi controller isn’t available yet, still a month out per Kevin, but he offered me a free upgrade once it does become available if it’s not ready by the time my order ships. Top notch customer service. Thanks for the recommendations!
how much did it cost for the HLN 2kW?
Thanks
What's the price on the HLN?
One small detail to add, I have the 5kW Maxspeedingrods and it's controller does go to sleep with a black screen after a few minutes. I also tested the burn mixture with a CO tester and found it to be perfect, averaging 1-2ppm once at temp. The fan is also double balanced and is very quiet, despite being brushed. It's controller also has audible speech assistant. I'm very impressed with it so far.
Superb video. This has got to be the reference for anyone looking to buy a diesel heater.
I own two Lavaner pro heaters a 2K and 5K they are excellent machines you really do them justice with your comments.
Thanks mate, we really appreciate that, it took us a long time to make so we are happy people like it
Outstanding video guys. I've been looking at buying one of these to use for roof top or ground tent and possibly a little garage heat. This video was very helpful
Incredible and important details! And yes please, if those extra videos aren't done yet, do them.
Very informative thank you for all the advice.😊
Top job guys, a very informative and entertaining watch. As a potential new user and purchaser, I'm sure glad I just found this video pop up in my suggested things to watch today.
Thanks mate
what a brilliant video for someone like me, looking at one of these to permanently install in my workshop ( 20x8 container) been using a propane heater and the bloody thing is just not right (fumes etc ) anyway i was going to buy the all in one units but after seeing this it makes a lot of sense to buy the stand alone type cos then i can run things the way i want etc, i think ill get the Laverna 5kw one .
thanks again for a superb informative video.
You will like it. My neighbor gave me a vevor stand alone 5kw for Christmas and i don't miss the propane. Still use some just to jump start the heat.
Brilliant review mate and bonus points for the Bottom clip :)
Such a good review
Great informative video for the newbies among us.
What a handy vid , straight to the save menu 👍
Wow 😵
Not sure what else to say TBH
I've been working with all makes of night heaters for the last 30 odd years and TBH 90% of videos on the subject just make me mad, too many 5 min experts who simply open a box and are instant experts, not here, you obv know your onions 👌
Well done and thank you 👍
My favourite make is Makuni, I own 2 and also a Lavaner pro , unfortunately I have to fit anything the customer buys so usually a no name Chinese one but to be fair any customer who could afford a webasto or an eber wouldn't employ me 🤣
Excellent video mate, thanks for the advice, when I lived in a van many moons ago, I survived two Scottish winters without any insulation in the van and Diesel heaters where not thought of then so your advice will help loads this time around cheers
Just a heads up on VEVOR heaters, many of them are fitted with IEC power connectors (100 - 250v ac) but being used for 12 - 24v dc absolute no no. I have just spent several years testing chinese goods for quality and safety and although now retired just help looking at such things. Enjoyed the vid and found it both useful and enlightening!
I was shocked, but not at all surprised to see that. It's disappointing that the Chinese manufacturers keep sabotaging themselves with small things on otherwise good products.
Thanks for that
Thanks sharing, impresive video
Nice video, info is good,& very simpel But very informative, well Done❤
Brilliant vids man. God bless you!!! This helpt me bit to late but now i know what to look for in the future😂🎉
Thanks mate, glad you like it
Brillaint! Been following your guides for a while now, and always point people to them when they ask me about diesel heaters! Thanks (why done you open an online store?)
Thanks mate much appreciated :)
Nice video mate very informative.
thanks mate, appreciated
Awesome video, subscribed.
Thanks mate
yes, make the video on the broadlink connectivity, please 😊
Thanks
I got a Sven saw yrs ago in Colorado..talking 1979, I recently swapped out the blade just so I had a spare. The original family still have the business, not China. Anyhow, ultra lite, collapsible for packing long-term. Appreciate your updates
Thanks for the great video !!
Roughly how much would the HLN 2kW cost me ?
Also in the uk
Thanks
I appreciate your buyer's guide.
I bought a Chinese heater and after installing it, it worked for 2 hours before it thew a high temp sensor code.
Reminded the first didn't work, I expected is that a replacement wouldn't either.
So, I ordered three new sensors from three different manufacturers.
I also ordered a rebuild kit.
It's still 15 days out.
When the first high temp sensor arrived, I installed it, only to have the unit throw two new codes:
Underpower and overpower.
Yet another reminder that it's Chinese.
I've ordered a new motherboard and controller... 20 days out.
If it doesn't work, there will be a sledgehammer party at Peter's house.
I expect I'll be buying either an
Hcaloric or something a bit more expensive.
Thanks again for the buyer's guide.
I'm polishing-up my sledgehammer...
To be honest mate, it sounds like you have a dead cell in your battery or a vey low battery. Either that or the motherboard. I have pnly ever seen error code 2 on 12v if the battery was damaged or the motherboard
Lucky for me, I ran into you !!
While in wholesale denial, I checked the battery with my voltmeter anyway...
My brand new battery was only kicking 8.4 volts.
Luckily, I'd bought two.🤣👍
Houston ?
We have heat !!
2 hours later, the pump dies.
I already ordered the quieter pump, I'm just not sure what I did with it.
Honestly, have you ever heard of anyone having this much trouble ?
My new heater arrived. Been testing, OLOEY 12V-24V Diesel Air Heater 5-8kw £80. Worked out of the box, no smoke. But the inlet silencer not very good, just hollow inside. So have a few exhaust silencers so put one on the air intake, what a difference. Stopped the intake roar. Have a box silencer for outlet, definitely better than the tin plate one. The controller just has a 6 step temp. controller. Better as you can change at will from remote.
Video prices expensive.
I put a pick-up tube directly on a 5 gallon gas can so i had a bigger fuel tank.
Awesome video, thanks for putting this together! Where did you find the sheet metal box found at 31:13 for exterior mounting?
Hi mate, from the UK ebay. Search diesel heater turret box
😂😂 Little Mo and Trevor. Brutal. I'm done 😂
Excellent video and so helpful for CDH newbie like me.
I’ve just bought a Hcalory Bluetooth 5KW standalone that you recommended on FB (not yet installed) for my double garage. I’m now wondering if it’s worth upgrading a lot of the accessories (combustion intake, exhaust, fuel pump, etc etc) to the HLN kit??🤔. Will they be universal sizes? I’m happy to prioritise quality/safety over price for this install.
Hi mate, I don't think they sell the HLN kit bits separately but it might be worth a try. And thank you much appreciated for your kind words
Can you do a review on the HLN air and water heater, im struggling to find out if it give hot water for IE shower Kitchen and heating? Or any other heater that does the water ie Bobil system?
I've spent weeks trying to decide if a diesel heater was the correct choice for my Bongo Friendee petrol driven, self-converted camper. It's almost the last job, and I've done 95% of the design and actual work myself: not bad for a 69yr old disabled old bag methinks😉 This video told me everything I needed to know and was very unsure about, thank you so much. It's down to the Lavaner Pro 2kw and the HLN Aerolyn 4kw now, but I'm wondering if the HLN, which I think is my prefered choice, would be over-kill? The van living space is only 130cm x 210cm and there's no space beneath the front seats, which is where most people seem to mount them although it could possibly go beneath the R&R bed, by the back door, but then I'd worry about sleeping above it! Having it outside the van would be difficult as I can't bend my back much and I can't kneel down either, so filling the tank would be a huge challenge! I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas/solutions which could help, thanks 👍😊
Hi Lynette, yeah i think the 4kw hln would be over kill but they do a 2kw hln too that would be perfect for a bongo.
Yeah as long as these is nothing in the way under the van is should be fine, but with a HLN you wouldn't really need to be getting down to it as they are so reliable. Where are you based? We would be happy to take a look for free for you we are based in Bradford
Fantastic review, I vote for a video on the RM4 please
Your wish is my command, we have one ready to make the video with :)
Where would you recomend placing a diesel heater in LWB van please, front middle back?
Question: Which unit is amenable to draw off straight from my diesel fuel tank. I have a 2016 sprinter which appears to have taps installed on my fuel tank. Can I run a fuel line from that to the heater and where would I place the fuel pump?
What 4 to 5 kilowatt would you recommend for a sailboat? Do any of the higher end ones make a combination of the air and domestic water heater?
Very useful and very amusing. You keep mentioning links below, but I can't see any on my mobile. I'm looking for the price of a Laverner Pro but Google shows nothing.
the first link in the post will take you to the blog post that has all the links in it
I have added the links to the description now
@vanlifesurvivorsguide still not available pal.
Any 2kw all in one heaters? 🤔 looking to find/ make one for fishing in a Bivvy.. and using a leisure battery to keep it going for 2 days.
I was looking at rhe HLN 4kw to replace my old Eberspacher 3dL .
The L is for long rang throw as this in on a sailing boat with 3 outlets and a 5m run .
Will the fan be enough to throw the heat and not over heat rhe unit?
The new Hcalory Bluetooth controllers good?? Seen stand alone unit with Bluetooth but not sure to get it or go with basic...
Great video...but can't find the link ..
Great video and very informative, but it's mainly aimed at vans or indoor rooms, I would really like to see one that covers a marine installation in a boat
Marine environment could be a bit harsh
Wonderful !
I just followed the link to the water drain filters, and they are out of stock.
Where can I buy the lavaner 5kw the link doesn't work?
@vanlifesurvivorsguide a very informative video think I'll be going for the maxking 5kw for a 20ft shed but I'm a bit in dark with power to it ie battery...? Have you any advice or video? Thanks in advance 😊
You can use a 240v to 12v transformer 20 amps or above if you have electric in the shed or yeah you can use a battery or a smart charger if you have electric in the shed or you can just use a battery and charge it every couple of days if you don't. If you look in the description section under the video you will see a link to our facebook group. If you join there we can send you links as it wont let us post links in the comments section on youtube.
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide Thanks for that i appreciate it and will go join the group
Thanks but the links no longer work.
Do have links to the upgraded glow plug and temperature sensor.
This is a fantastic video. Very helpful and informative. Thanks for making it. Just sent a query to HLN to find out the price of a 4KW heater.
I’m interested in one too, did you get a price back please?
@@nickmarkham3327 I requested a price but was told they didn't have any stock until next month.
They wouldn't give a price.
Had mine fitted van about 5 years now. Only a Berlingo van but 10 minutes on it's toasty. Fan was rubbing on intake. Found out inside there are three spacer pins. The bottom one a couple of mill. short. So i taped a spacer to put fan concentric with the housing. All good. Just ordered 5kw one £80 for my flat. Mount on cooker hood vent just as it goes outside, tank in cupboard, battery, timed night charger. Could use solar panel?
Also the exhaust pipe rotted away, so keep eye on exhaust pipe. Also have one of those quiet pumps, not much quieter. Where heater needs to catch up is the silencer, not very good, as said at full blast like jet engine and the sound carries. Some experimenting needed there..
after watching this and rewinding, searching whilst listening , and watching again. I think only 2questions remain..
#1: how much are the HLN AEROLYN kits
#2: what portable AIO kits do you recommend ?
btw: great vid, very thorough and informative !
I would defiantly go with the HLN AEROLYN 5KW, in an AIO setup for a grid down situation.
I'm trying to investigate an all-in-one diesel heater: my vehicle is petrol driven but I'm told I can get a diesel heater anyway, with its own tank. It's this true? Where would I find proper, professional reviews and info please? Thank you for reading this, warmest regards, Lynette McKone
I can't find the stand alone. Hcalory® Diesel Heater Air 5KW anywhere the model you said what can fully switch it's self of .all seems to be out of stock everywhere .
I have two 5 kw unbranded units to heat my insulated garage. I have nat gas overhead heater. But don't like using it. Too noisy burns too much nat gas. No shut off for flue. So when it shuts off all the heat goes up the flue. I have a piece of cardboard with magnets I stick in to seal the flue. Then use my diesel heaters to heat garage. I installed an hcalory engine preheater in my pickup to preheat engine when it gets minus 40. It's on its second year and still working good. So impressed I just bought another for my other pickup. But new one I got comes with different remote and in car control module. Wish they would have stuck with the old controller. But the one I bought last year still works good. Hope the new controller and remote works as good as the older ones
For my garage I have one that is all in one. The other the heater uses a remote fuel tank. Not sure I like the all in one unit. The tank sits right above the burner. If tank cracks or leaks it would drip fuel in burner. Only takes one to heat garage to working temp. I fire both up to heat garage faster. Then shut off the all in one. Did mods to my main one to make burn chamber last longer.
Another good video.
The recommended manufacturers are the ones often quoted within EU van and boat circles. The Russian versions are also good, but with less variety, (but in some ways that can be an advantage).
I will check out the video on controller types, but on my last investigation of the few dozen I have come across, there were several different types, creating well over 20 possible combinations with some connectors failing to match. Some worked when wires were reconnected to the appropriate pins, but in short, the variety of controllers and mother boards was unforgivable. In a few cases the chip used on the board, in identical units, was completely different, so I must simply accept the term 'universal' on face value.
I have not had problems with the green fuel lines, or even the 'clip on' clamps, but again, in so many areas of these heaters, a bit of standardisation of parts would be the common sense solution. Not much chance there unfortunately.
Not decrying the fine work by this team at vanlife, the solution would be to control imports to ensure a standard 'high quality gateway' into the UK. So many faults, incompatibilities, and downright rip off adverts would be avoided. It is a shame that such videos need to be made as general engineering principle would demand that parts could be obtained which are always compatible and then fitting instructions could be easily copied and swapped.
These heaters are crying out for a warehouse controlled import infrastructure, which must of course involve the main players in its creation. Vanlife would be at the front of the queue, obviously.
Great vid. lots of useful data, and some sense is being made of a snowstorm of parts, incompatibilities, lack of backward compatibility, and vague advertising surrounding these products.
Some day, hopefully, this jungle will be tamed ?
I've got the Maxpeedingrods 5kw ready to install in my garage where I work. Upgraded the exhaust and silencer, plus some marine grade rubber fuel line.
I'm hoping the fact it's Bluetooth will help that the controller is basic? I ideally need to turn it on an hour before I start work each day. Running off kerosene too
The4 maxpeedingrods controller has a timer and is quite good so you should be ok if you remember to set it. The bluetooth is pretty useless unless you are in range of the controller though.
I don't understand what all the consternation is about having a muffler on these units.
Without one, they only make a small hissing sound.
@@Peter-jo3wt It can make a huge difference to the noise but yeah you are right its the air intake that is the real noisy bit
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide
I couldn't hear the intake over the fan, but considering it only ran for 2 hours, it would be petty to complain.
They should call you Chinese Diesel Daddy
What i font understand. I have a vevor model with the display you advertised with. It has no temperature preset. Can i stil upgrade it to one that has one?
which controller do you have?
Thanks for the update, I am just about to purchase a Lavana 2Kw unit. What are your thoughts on tapping into the diesel return line from the engine? This looks like an easier connection than dropping the fuel tank.
I wonder if that HLN air intake can be purchased somewhere.
Update, Autoterm has similar looking ones on their site under "spare parts".
Just a warning my hcalory briefcase heater came with the non-universal controller.
Does the Lavaner Pro MAX and its special controller shut off when it hits the correct temp? Or does it keep running on low like the normal CDH controllers?
it just keeps running, it would be a problem for the battery this is why even the best heaters do it. We do have a solution though in our newest blog post. I will post a link in the description of the video so you can have a look and see if it will be any help to you.
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide I saw the post! Very cool! That universal rf bridge is pretty cool.
Definitely would love to see a video on upgrading a basic 'diesel heater' with a bluetooth controller that has vent function and auto on/off thermostat function.
We're on it mate
@@vanlifesurvivorsguidedo you know if german diesel heaters (webasto/eberspacher) can be controlled by these universal chinese controllers?
Have a picture of a piece of 3.5 mm copper wire soldered into a 13 amp plug as a fuse.
The bitly link for the LAVANER PRO 5KW seems to be broken?
Thanks I will look into it now, if you want to buy the 5KW now before i fix it you can click through the 2kw link and see the other products in the lavaner store just above the photo of the heater
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide Awesome thanks!
In the USA. Where can i purchase the HLN 2kw? Others have failed my expectations, this one looks nice.
Have you tried searching eBay and Amazon ?
He said only from the company itself
Great video, Thank you. After listening to your information I would go with the Lavener Pro Max… best quality for the money. Thx again
Yeah right!, Who in their right mind would want to connnect their heater to the internet....
Just imagine if some hacker takes control of it! 😂
Just went to buy the Lavaner 2kw at the link you gave and it states it does not ship to my address... UK mainland...
Hi mate, you need to either sign up to ali experess so it knows your address then it works differently or download the app on your phone and order from there i believe. Failing that if you scroll down a bit there is an email for Craig he from lavaner and he will point you in the right direction for uk stock and distributers :)
Hey man, Can I get a Lavaner pro max Or the HLN in California US ? Thank you, Jeffrey Faulkner
Love your vids by the way! Thank you!
@@jefffaulkner6294 Thanks mate, yeah you can do they are based in the U.S in the state with the initials WY so I am guessing Wyoming?. contact Kevin from HLN his email is in the description box of the video. Lavaner sell in the U.S too email Craig from Lavaner his email is in the description box too
Surely the Triclicks doesn't all of a sudden become a bad heater just because they change the remote control?
No of course not, there were just better options to suggest this year. It has been our favourite basic heater for years but the new controller isn't the universal type so not many options for upgrades anymore and that was always a big plus point.
Where are the links / description .?
Just under the video you will see where it tells you how many views it has had and when it was posted. That is the description box. The last words in it should be ...more. Click the word more
I brought one couple days ago. I thought these things were good on fuel? I got mine on 9° and it’s going through fuel like mad
yeah on 9 it will do nearly half a litre per hour on lowest power it will do much better. 10 hours per litre at about 100ml per hour :)
The same standalone heaters are whats inside the all in one unit. They're the same thing. Why can't they be used in vehicles?
They can be used IF you disassemble it, remove the actual heater and buy a mounting turret and mount the exhaust connection from the heater outside the vehicle but you’ll probably need to extend the wiring to the controller and buy longer fuel line
WHY YOU DONT RECOMMEND THE ALL IN ONE DIESEL HEATERS TO PUT INSIDE YOUR VAN ?
Because the exhaust connection would be inside the vehicle
@@stephenlord599 ok i didnt know that, i thought it had a hose to run out the bottom of your vehicle, yes that would be something i wouldnt trust either
@@owensdaniels6244 the exhaust (and inlet) is cast into the body and straight to the burn chamber .. it’s all one piece.
This should be joined to the exhaust pipe outside any enclosed area. It basically pushes on and is held by a clip ..
@@stephenlord599 SIR WHEN I SAW THAT ON THE VIDEO I LOOKED AT THE DIESEL FUEL HOSE I THOUGHT IT WAS A LITTLE TOO! CLOSE AND BUILT NOT ENOUGH SPACE SO THE FUEL LINE COULD START TO SMOKE! IF IT GOT TOO HOT THERE, BUT THE CHINESE ARE BAD ABOUT MAKING THINGS TOO! TINY TO WORK ON, IM NOT HATING ON THE WONDERFUL CHINESE BUILDERS BUT ITS A FACT!
Nothing wrong with that green fuel line just the installation
Its bad mate, not only is it not fuel grade, can kink, split, degrade, cause air bubbles etc it also means that the pump has to push and pull twice the amount of fuel than it does with the correct diameter fuel line wearing the pumps out quicker too. If you use any other fuel line thicker than 2mm inner diameter or the wrong type with Webasto and eberspacher and your pumps fail they void your warranty down to user error.
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide ive had my set up running with that fuel line for 2 years, i respect your vast knowledge on these things but these are my findings for diesil not petrol, it will only kink if your installation is poor, the ristriction through this feul line is minimal compared to the solid stuff so its not pushing hard at all(im a heating engineer, hydrolics and flow is something i know about) + you need to put a connection piece at every joint inc the filter!!.
Id like to know how old the line (or what you put through it for it to degrade or split, air in the line dose'nt seem to matter as the pumps as its never running dry.
Ive just stripped my heater down to see how see looks inside and i cant believe how little soot there was. None in the burn chamber and just a small amount on the heat exchanger walls. I use this in my workshop so its on all winter set on 1. Very impresive. Only run mine on kerro/diesil. Your vids are top notch so i hope you dont mind me " having a conversation" about "the green stuff" as i only ever use experiance to disprove ....or proove what works or dos'nt. Keep your vids coming there informative and entertaining.
How come we don’t see Chinese people using these heaters
do you see many of them with campervans?
Volume is too low!
Crack 🤣🤣 ffs
Unfortunately, unwatchable with all that garbage inserted. 😢😢
Might be a good video, but too much crap inserted between the information.
Everyone is now inserting childish cartoon stupid crap to get the length of the video set right🤬

They dont work go electric.
thats just not true is it... You must be using it wrong.
@@vanlifesurvivorsguide used it once it worked after that it just blows cold air for 4 seconds and does nothing this is a new unit.no code error either they are a peace of shit .do not buy them you will get ripped off.to un reliable.
Best thing to come out of China (probably the only thing)
@@geoffszczypior644 it sounds like you haven't primed it properly or your battery is dead.

Sorry mate. I can't watch your video with all those movie shorts in between. It's so annoying I have to end watching after 5 min of torture for a supposedly comprehensive guide.
Oh dear, how sad, never mind
Came here for advice, not a comedy show. You do have great info to share, but I don’t have the patience to watch, sorry mate.
Stop with unnecessary unimportant nonsense and just get to the meat and potatoes. Big thumbs down. Can’t get into this.
