Rise of Bangtan do not have some professional, she is the only one who is doing all the editing. Her name is Aneesa. She is a freelance editor. She is long time ARMY, since 2013/14. She said she could not express in words to her family and friends why she love BTS so much, why BTS mean so much to her, so she thought let me make something to show them. She started this series alone. But as this series grow bigger, more people volunteer. Now she had a group of translator who tranlate this series in various language and 1/2 people who help her to find all these clip. But the main editing and how the story will be told is determined by her.
She is another example, why ARMY is not just another fandom and BTS is not just another artist. ARMYs who have school, college, full time job volunteering to spend time to make videos about BTS, so that people can understand BTS and their message... for what? Aneesa (the editor of Rise of Bangtan) said this series is her love letter to BTS. This is how much BTS mean to a lot of ARMYs.

16:05 "Is it worth it ... to get that job that might make you a little bit more money, to keep your head just slightly above water so you don't drown and starve?" This is the thing that I can't get over (after it eventually dawned on me, but ofc I didn't know how to question it for so long)--why do we straight up *let people starve*? We really don't have to. We have the resources, and we systematically encourage people to hoard them. So what's the goal of our society? ...and what do we want it to be? And what would the systems look like that encourage that?
Also, yeah, mental health! Therapy is for everyone! (Make it accessible for everyone!)
32:43 "I can see how people might be upset because it's something new. But that's what art is .... you want to evolve the artform." YES! And I think this goes pretty well for everything, not just art. Change is scary (more so for some than others), but there is no growth without change and there is no life without growth! (Idk, maybe people especially scared of change think when you are "grown up" you are done growing?)

  • @melwigs
    @melwigs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +123

Even back then fans were already protective and felt sorry for BTS. They weren’t your typical idol group, rough and maybe a little rough looking by idol standards, a so called “repetitive” debut concept, no money or connections, and basically they got pushed back on all sides from under and above. That clip of Bfree you saw is the “under” part lol. If you weren’t part of the big 3 (SM, YG, JYP) you really weren’t supposed to have any sort of following. As I understand it, you debut with a big company you’ve basically already proven your worth and you have a following, that’s it. They still work extremely hard and have to be pretty darn perfect to keep their fans, but they already look good, sound good, act well and their company will get the gigs. Idol fans and those with power in the industry worked to sabotage BTS from a very early stage (because there was something about them, let’s be real) not to mention just constant hate online. Like you’ve seen it’s cutthroat over there, we’re talking death threats.

If you watch "Parasite" or "Squid Game", this unhealthy glorification of an elite university education in South Korea is a theme. BTS members do not discredit a formal education, even if not from an elite university. Despite their crazy schedule, all of them are working on their Masters (Jimin & V got their Bachelor's last year with a special award by the university) except for the youngest Jungkook who should be getting his Bachelor's degree soon. Korea celebrated chuseok a couple of weeks back ☺️ Homosexuality is still taboo in South Korea. Billboard magazine did a disrespectful interview recently and RM as usual handled it with wit and class (but sigh, the prejudice never stop).

Societal pressure is such an Asian thing and happens not just in SK but also Japan, China and Singapore. BTS themselves had to face so much oppression from their own families as they forged against the grain of their Asian culture. RM’s parents wanted him to be a salaryman, Suga fought with his parents and left home to chase his dreams of music production, and J-Hope’s dad didn’t approve of him dancing his way through life. Their music and messages resonate with ARMY and that they are so personal and relatable is why they are so loved.

So all these serious topics BTS were discussing in their lyrics, this is NOT what other idol groups talked about in their music at that time, and honestly even now. The one exception being Seo Taiji & The Boys, one of the most influential groups in SK music history, who brought hip-hop to SK in the 90s, and is also known as the first “Kpop” group. But other than Seo Taiji in the early 90s, for the most part idol music had largely simplistic lyrics. They didn’t talk about societal issues or problems or changes in culture that must be talked about. That wasn’t normal or perceivably marketable by agencies, who are the ones writing lyrics for idols, not necessarily the idols themselves. What BTS did with their music back then in 2013/2015, using their music to talk about the real root of people’s frustrations and anxieties (in this case unmanageable school schedules and educational expectation in South Korea) and, especially, writing it THEMSELVES with their true thoughts and feelings, that was NOT done in idol music. But the creation of BTS and the goal of Bang PD, as well as the rest of the BTS members, was to challenge that formula in idol music. They did it to challenge that standard, but also to help people who have been wronged by governmental and societal bodies to cope. BTS’ rebellious spirit is not by accident, they were planning to rebel, them and Bang PD both, and the rebellious spirit is still just as alive today as it was then. That rebellious spirit is seen in songs from 2013/2014, like NO, it is seen in songs from 2017, Spring Day, and even now that rebellious spirit is still alive, like now with how much push back BTS is getting from the American Music Industry.

As an older ARMY, this was what drew me to BTS. Looks, production, talent, there’s plenty of those in Kpop and even in American music. But I have yet to find other groups who actually try to make meaningful and inspiring songs. I seriously wish girl groups can also make BTS-like songs, instead of just empty poppy music…but then again I’m probably asking too much for an idol group.

It's weird to wrap your head around in the beginning of discovering K-Pop regarding male to male affection in Korea compared to the west (at least it was for me). Men are more touchy feely with each other but homosexuality is not widely accepted. It's a strange dynamic. Some of what they do is considered "fanservice"...flirting with each other to get a reaction from the crowd. The kissing scene between V and J-Hope was a punishment on a series they were on (I think it was Rookie King). I can't count the number of times I have heard people assuming that BTS members are "gay" (because of this cultural difference) or "feminine" because of different beauty standards between the east and west. I personally love their dynamic and they have completely changed my perception of masculinity. It's kind of a shame that most western men can't express their love and friendship among themselves without feeling weird about it. Thanks for your reaction

14:30 this is what (for me) makes BTS' message SO important. A country where there is a pandemic of teenage s*icides because of the intense pressure they are put under, and here are a group of successful men saying "It's okay to not do as well as other people want you to do, focusing on what you want and being HAPPY as that is what truly matters" is SO important. It's easy for fans of other artists to say "this album sold more than bts'"....but the IMPACT their music has had on the youth is unbelievable. I saw a bp stan yesterday say that bp have achieved so much in a shorter period. And whilst yes, that's great for them (disregarding the fact that western doors have been opened to Korean music because of bts), none of their music has had the same impact. And that's what actually matters. Music can get listeners and that's great. But helping young people believe in themselves? That's beyond what any numbers can calculate. And we don't even need to mention stans of western artists...Jim said it himself in this reaction.

I don‘t even get the comparisons with this “fastest“. Yeah, good for the other groups, but in this case for example the comparison falls short, because BTS came from a small company unlike BP. BP‘s hype was already immense when they debuted because of the company. They had a lot of money, they were shown everywhere, they had advertisement from the beginning and they were not cut from broadcast. BP had already a good following due to the company. It doesn‘t mean that the girls didn‘t work hard, of course. I‘m sure they did and that the competition was also tough for them. It is just hard to compare, because BTS and Bighit had to build all by themselves from scratch. Bighit had not even a training system, when they signed the rappers! That is a huge difference. That is one of the things that makes it so impressive. BTS reached their goals without all those benefits and they were the first not from the big 3, who made it this big, even surpassing them. On top of that, the groups that debuted a few years after BTS had already more exposure, because of the rise in kpop (which can be largely attributed to BTS).

very true. After all, what is all the glitz and glamor without the right messaging. Like what is the meaning of all the grand stages, awesome MVs, ridiculous choreos without the message of the music and the impact of it with the audience, that's not something short term. I think that's the reason, I have not been able to point a bad song from them...though, not everything is my favorite. That's sets apart BTS to other artists even those from the west.

12:57 The Korean music industry is much faster paced than the western industries... Like you said in the west it's normal to release an album every two years, keeping fans occupied by slowly releasing single after single that will then later all be included in the album. In Korea it's the other way round, esp if you're just trying to make a name for youself. You gotta come out with two EP's a year minimum, with the lead songs dropping at the same time as the rest of the album, no teasing singles, in order to not be forgotten among the endless number of competitors. It's also common to release Japanese versions of your album often including original Japanese songs as well to promote in the Japanese market.
BTS too have consistently released two EP's or one album and one EP every year since debut. The only exeptions being 2019, where they only released one EP, Map Of The Soul: Persona, and this year 2021, where they haven't released an album at all, only two singles (Butter and Permission to Dance) as well as various collaborations and free songs on soundcloud. It seems like now that they've reached the top they feel comfortable taking longer rests between albums, and honestly deserved. They've been running so hard to get to where they are are now, so good for them to slow down to a jog :)

47:12 I was listening over Yoongi's most recent mixtape and in his song "Moonlight" there's a lyric that goes "One moment I feel like I’ve easily earned what I have and the next moment I’m compensated for the f*cking hard work I’ve done" and I think it's so interesting that all these years later, this humility and mindset is still something they bounce back and forth between. All of them have expressed this same troubled statement in one way or another and objectively, what IS the "correct compensation" for something? Does that even exist? It's almost like, until everyone is taken care of, there's always going to be that...hesitation? Uncertainty? Survivors guilt? Whatever the feeling is. Because honestly, BTS aren't the only people that work hard, they've just been lucky enough to have success born from their hard work. That's not the same for everyone and being aware of that can make living comfortably uncomfortable for some. I wonder if that's some of what BTS thinks or feels when they say things like that? I know I'm over thinking this, but it's just something I'm interested in haha

Hahaha.... Koreans are generally more touchy in fact. That's also what I heard from my American friends :-) Holding hands, putting arms around others' shoulders.... (or even on waists :-). These are friendly gestures among friends and brothers, and no Koreans would see it as homosexuality. Also know that some other Koreans nowadays avoid those gestures because they now know that those gestures could signal homosexuality from outsiders' point of view. The country is still quite conservative (there are big generation gaps), homosexuality is seen very very harsh unfortunately. I think creating their own variety shows, RUN BTS, was a great idea since they couldn't trust general media who often twist scenes depending on who they support based on money or merits something. Also, BTS, since they debuted so young, they are deprived of fun days, and RUN BTS has provided them to enjoy their growth with their members (leaving pressure among the members for a while). They got a strong bond from those experiences, I think :-)

22:57 No the odds are definitely not in their favor. Which makes it even more phenomenal how much they’ve achieved just in 2013/2014/2015 alone, let alone today looool.
23:57 YEEEES PREACH MAN!!! So many people don’t fully realize that!! Thank you!!!!
25:45 So…in SK skinship (cuddling, hugging, sitting in each other’s laps, etc.) is common. It is a physical sign of closeness between friends/family/people you care about etc. not necessarily just a sign of romantic attraction, like we would see here in the West. It could be assumed that due to that homosexuality in SK is embraced yet sadly, homosexuality in South Korea is EXTREMELY looked down upon, to the point where Human Rights Services had to step in and tell SK businesses and government that they can not discriminate against homosexual people and not pay them, fire them for that reason, etc. It’s a very big mess there, sadly. In the entertainment industry, not idol groups specifically, coming out as homosexual is almost a suicide attempt in your career. One person did it in the early 2000s and he immediately lost everything. However, in recent years, 2018 or so, about two people in entertainment came out and though they have received heavy backlash for it, they can still do singing, thankfully. So….small steps forward. US is much more advanced for LGBTQ human rights in relation to SK.
28:14 You’ll slowly learn every BTS song is epic 😈😈 Soon enough you’ll never be able to match any artist of today to what BTS have done and are doing. Enjoy! 🤗🤗
32:50 YES PREACH YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IS WHAT BTS ARE TRYING TO DO
34:35 Yeah pretty much, so many people who had BTS, and just idol groups from small companies in general, are not taken seriously. Yet another hurdle that BTS had to overcome.
35:08 Yes we all are protective over BTS but as you are now understanding, it is for good reason. This first antagonistic event is going to be the first of many and they will go through an endless amount of antagonism to come that I simply haven’t seen coming at any artist today, and you will see it all as you go through this documentary series. So it’s understandable, the protectiveness, and you are starting to understand why by this research you are doing. Many outsiders perceive that protectiveness in bad light but it’s simply because they don’t know what BTS have gone through, so thank you so much more than your understanding but you actually TRYING to understand us. You’re one of us now anyway 😂😂 Okay went in a bit of a rant there, back to the video now 🙂
35:50 YES!! That’s what I love about RM in that moment too!! In public he is so, so careful and considerate of all his words, because he knows he has influence and audience and wants to use it for good. The place he lets out his frustration about the event will be in the music 🙂 It’s the same for BTS in general, in public, in areas of great influence, they always try to show their best side to us as fans and people as general, and the gritty feeling they can’t necessarily show on screen they have an outlet for by putting it through their music. BigHit and Bang Pd were caring, realistic, and considerate enough to give them that outlet as entertainers and idols.
37:54 yes that’s why fans felt bad for them. BTS and BigHit were NOTHING in the idol music industry, let alone entertainment in general. They couldn’t get on stages for music shows, they couldn’t get air time or their air time was cut due to them being so small. They just took what stage they could get, and so every performance they did they did as if it was their last because it very well could have been. They had no way to truly get themselves out there except for their albums, and if the albums did bad they were done because BigHit had no money to spare at all. Fans back then felt bad because of all those things because there was no grounded, reliable way in which they could support them in the music industry world outside of album sales. Like, imagine in your group chat getting the hang together on a school night to go see them at a nearby show and making all preparations and you get to the line and look at the line up and they aren’t there. Because they were in a small company BTS were shoved in last minute or excluded form line up altogether, so some fans who could go to the shows would only know BTS were there an hour before show time, so BTS could have gone on stage with no audience for them due to the last minute line up. THAT was what BTS were facing and that’s why so many fans felt bad for them.
40:20 Yes exactly, another reason BTS stood out from all other idol groups, at their core they didn’t act as idols, as they were perceived to act. They were leaning towards acting and showing their human side, as seen through these logs and behind the scenes stuff. Idols did NOT do that back then, you never saw that vulnerable side, but BTS were brave enough to do it. They WANTED to do it! Them and BigHit both from their beginning, their goal was to always go against the unfair practice and expectations of idols.
44:44 It’s so brave, so freaking brave. If there is one thing I can say about something in common with every single BTS member in their personality is their bravery.
47;30 loooo yeah it was like group therapy, most definitely therapy for BTS 🙂 I’m so glad that was done.
47:34 Jin is just such a fucking real person man. He’s amazing. He’s a big part of the reason BTS stay humble. You’ll see this in later videos but Jin really, really has a way of staying humble and realistic and inspiring the other members to do the same. He’s definitely a big reason BTS are so humble today, being the biggest thing ever on the planet.
53:14 You go man!!! I’m happy for you
You know I got to say I loved your reaction so freaking much!! I loved how dynamically you perceived everything. Perhaps it’s because of how much your researched beforehand but you understand BTS and their beginning perfectly so far!! Thank you!! I’ll see you for the next reaction and I hope you like it just as much as you liked it now. RoB is truly brilliant

  • @MichelSampson

I'm not Korean, so I can't speak for them, but from what I observed and learned from fellow ARMYs, LGBTQ+ community is still not very accepted in SK. The guys, however, are very affectionate with each other. You can often see them hugging, touching, sleeping together etc, which from a western POV might seem a little bit 'too much', but it's a culture thing I guess. I think I read somewhere that they don't find it that weird when two boys are this close since "there's no way for them to be together (as a couple)" (since they don't support the idea of two people of the same gender being in love).
The guys (BTS) themselves never revealed their sexual orientation (and it's honestly not our business whatsoever) and never openly talked about supporting the community (if I'm not mistaken) but a lot of their love songs are gender neutral and they have always tried to spread the message of "love is love". They're not afraid to show love for each other, some are more affectionate than others, but overall they're very close and treat each other like family.

    • @ipurpleu1668
      @ipurpleu1668 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

They have openly spoken about supporting the LGBTQ+ community. They have spoken about many LGBTQ+ movies, saying the theme is why they like and recommend them. They also have always supported and recommended LGBTQ+ artists, such as V's favorite photographer being known to take naked photos of gay men and them being big Troye Sivan fans. Bang PD recommended The Blue Neighborhood Trilogy (Troye Sivan's trilogy MVs about a young gay couple) to the boys and stated that he felt like it held an important message. BigHit also had the first non-binary K-pop idol (who J-Hope is very good friend with) who told a story about how Bang PD gifted them their first pair of heels. So we can see from the Troye Sivan recommendation and Bang PD’s support of his idols, their boss is very supportive of the community and seemed to strive to make sure BTS was educated on the LGBTQ+ community to some extent. RM also tweeted about loving the song Same Love (a song about marriage equality) and loving it even more after 'reading and investigating the lyrics'. In their Love Yourself speech at the UN, RM explicitly said 'gender identity' showing inclusivity to the trans and non-binary community, rather than just saying 'gender' or 'sex'. Suga also owns and sometimes wears vans that were sold during Pride month that was used to raise money for the LGBTQ+ community. If we want to talk about direct support for the community, Suga is the only one who has directly spoken about it. When asked in a Billboard interview if they supported the LGBTQ+ community, Suga explicitly said, "There's nothing wrong. Everyone is equal," showing direct support for the community while the other boys didn't directly answer the question (probably due to Korean social norms).

They play games and those who lose the games have to do penalties, such as getting pinched, drinking a vase of spicy smoothy, dressing like a girl, etc... (Run BTS was modeled after these type of Korean variety shows.) The kiss was a punishment, the punishment was to recreate a scene from a movie. (It was the first Korean movie do depict a gay romance, the kiss is the final scene and it's sentimental/cute scene, I think.) It was just a peck, obviously. ARMYs think it was funny, I guess. This is not hate at all, but i think when u say that they seems to be so connected w army, I think it’s because they put it all in the fans, they do the hard work but without the fans that hard work wouldn’t be supported. Other singers that debuted in big3 what could happen if they fail? Obviously they could be disappointed they’ve worked so hard but probably they can keep doing others thing. For example BP i guess they really appreciate their fans but so far i know that one of the members even wanted to be an actor not a singer, and she is starting that way now, and probably is that don’t works they can keep going, they never go through no money situation, no support or something like that because the privileges of being in the big3. But BTS in that time have nothing but their hard work and passion, Suga had say that him worked doing delivery job and one time he get into an accident, his family was poor, and he didn’t say anything about the accident cause the company was paying his studies, and bts aren’t just singer but trully artist and performers, producers, songwriters, they love music and they put it all in just one hope, in army. I think that’s because the relationship was different. When they win something I watched clips no like awards speech where they say as if they wants to work harder to compensate us but they already do we support their hard works because it deserved it, they come from nothing and that makes the relationship really trully.

lol im doing a comment again but idc so
As person who likes hip hop and is informed i can say that no, idols can’t be called real rappers just because they talk fast when they don’t even touch a pencil or have 3 songs and as harder as it is these are facts, in kpop i just know 3 rap lines who are or have real rappers. Talk fast, shout, make a deep voice or w “flow” dont make them a good rapper or even a rapper, bts has the best rap line causa have three real rappers, who were underground or learned in the pure ways of hip hop as j hope did, im not an underground rapper so I can’t understand that guy but for sure is stupid thinking if u have an opportunity to get paid u wouldn’t take it just because of what they thinks, and for the hip hop I don’t think they betrayed it in some way cause hip hop is not just how they looks or if they get paid or not, the thing is they’re real rappers and in kpop the best ones cause their flow/syllables in time/lirycs/wordplay etc:)
Bts made the idol-rapper concept works but they do it because before they were real rappers, but the man is not wrong at all, one singer is not a musician, is not a rapper, is not a songwriter, is a performer and not always a good one. In kpop there’s so much “rappers” who just called themselves like that because that was the position that the company gives to them, that doesn’t mean they’re actually rappers

You have only scratched the surface and you are already getting protective over them. You are starting to understand ARMY! Can I suggest you tag on the deleted scenes and bonus content episodes as you need these too!
Rookie King was their own show and a way of playing with ARMY. This morphed into the monster that is RUN BTS, the best show in the world! They are up to episode 155!💜

I am at the age when everything is pressuring me, idk if being an Asian is one of the reasons why I am like this. I study too much, I became too harsh on myself to pass everyone's standards and expectations. I dont want to be like this, N.O.'s lyrics means so much to me

Korean standard is really too much. Education system is too harsh, being an idols/celebrities has too many unrealistic qualifications (even the little mistakes that you made in the past would affect your career badly), even being a normal citizen has standards, from skin to weight to everything. The suicide rates is a reflection of those.

Loved this reaction! But if you are making one episode per video PLEASE make as well the Deleted scenes and Bonus content right after. Because it's literally the continuation of episodes and only make sense to watch it right after. She had so much work doing this, it's really worth it to check. There are literally things that were on the chapters but in a extended version and stuff like this.

You said MCAS? I know where you’re from then haha. I’m a teacher in MA and omg the students have to do MCAS even during this pandemic. My poor students are so stressed this year. 😞
Also NO is just one example of BTS pushing back against older generations and societal issues (Baepsae, Not Today, and a B side called Paradise are some more great examples). It’s a big reason I love them. They are respectful but assertive. They are humble but they really push back.
When you get to Cypher pt2, you’ll hear Suga and RM clap back at B Free (the rapper that called them girls). It’s very satisfying. He isn’t doing well in life or his career these days either haha.

Hi Jim, glad you’re taking this approach, cos one of the things that is striking about BTS is the organic development of their music, as they themselves grew from teenaged boys to young men. As artists, they genuinely LOVE music and allow themselves to explore different genres. So you will see as you journey along. You’ll find they do R&B ballads, jazzy numbers, even as they continue to do hard retro Hiphop, techno and disco pop… They experiment a lot, and refuse to be pigeonholed. So you see them evolve. And whatever they can’t do as a group, they do in their solo mixtapes, as gifts to their fans. Look out later for RM, Suga & JHope’s mixtapes. Works of genius, truly mind blowing. (BTW I’m over 60, and a classical music and rock fan. So, not a teenage girl fan.)

I'm enjoying following your BTS journey! I watched your album reaction on Twitch and I found your reaction to the skits very interesting but I think you actually gave the answer to your question yourself: The skits allow us to connect more closely with the members. Also, BTS albums follow a narrative arc, they are more than
just individual pieces of music put together. The packaging is also part of the whole artistic concept, by the way. In that sense, the skits are simply part of a bigger narrative that goes beyond music. By the way, 2 Cool 4 Skool is called a "single album" by Big Hit, so it's basically their extended debut single. As it's part of a trilogy, I don't think ARMYs have ever seen it as too short. The spelling is supposed to look cool, like in advertising our youth slang ("kidz", "Froot Loops" etc). I guess ARMYs consider it as charming rather than cringy. After all the boys were between 15 and 20 (international age) when they debuted, they really were very young. Looking forward to your next reactions!

Fast forward to 2021 and they’re still the same. Always communicating with us in all platforms, always being grateful to us. The biggest band in the world yet you see them asking dinner recommendations from us, asking how we’re doing, recommending us songs, talking to us like we’re best friends. I’ve never seen an artist like them. Just incredible.

"Watching Bts, it's like hanging out with buddies" (you, haha). YES! This is why we love them. Some Armys are very thirsty, lol, but some of just want to be best friends with them. Wait until you watch a Run episode or In the Soop - the boys are so naturally funny and charming - and it's very obvious they all love each other very much and it's not fake for the cameras.

When bts made N.O they literally saved millions of lives, special for people that where going threw that process of school and success, and prevented then from commiting suicide. And people from South korea respects them so much for that and that's one of the reason the country has so much respect for them, even it back then they were traded unfairly. And I'm saying this because my friend was living in South Korea at that time and the reason she got into bts was because they stopped her from committing suicide, she was tired and school was such a big deal. I'm glade she's here and is so much better.
