  • Steve Wozniak discusses his early days at UC Berkeley, and how they led to the foundation of Apple.
    A Silicon Valley icon and philanthropist for more than thirty years, Steve Wozniak has helped shape the computing industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products the Apple I and II and influenced the popular Macintosh. In 1976, Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer Inc. with Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. The following year, he introduced his Apple II personal computer, featuring a central processing unit, a keyboard, color graphics, and a floppy disk drive. The Apple II was integral in launching the personal computer industry.
    In 1981, he went back to UC Berkeley and finished his degree in electrical engineering/computer science. For his achievements at Apple, Wozniak was awarded the National Medal of Technology by the President of the United States in 1985, the highest honor bestowed on America’s leading innovators.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Steve Jobs is the visionary leader and salesman of Apple. Wozniak is the brains and heart of Apple at least the original Apple. Such an amazing inventor, tinkerer, engineer, and human being. So grounded and humble and open to sharing.

    • @The-Rest-of-Us
      @The-Rest-of-Us 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +80schampion Although I would argue that Jobs was also the heart of Apple. Also, he surely learnt a lot from Woz. Bill Gates once said "even though Jobs is not an engineer, he has amazing intuition for what works and how to do it". I think much of this comes from spending so much time with Woz in the early days.

    Steve Wozniak has the heart at the right spot! He got what life is all about, the polar opposite to Steve Jobs. Where Steve Jobs wants to restrict, confine and lockdown products possibilities... Steve Wozniak wants to explore the possibilities of them, in a child like manner with eyes wide open looking for fun together with everyone. Unlike Steve Jobs that only looked to enrich himself, limit customers possibilities and try to chain them to the apple ecosystem.
    But this story is also a good story about karma, you reap what you sow. I am no one to judge people, Steve Jobs included... so I don't want to say he reaped what he sow.
    But the moral of the story is... do what is right, be nice to people... don't be selfish... and people will love you for it, just las much loved as Steve Wozniak is!

    That being said, Steve Wozniak is one of those quiet innovators who inspired my engineering mindset, people approach and the creative process.

    Ha...I grew up in Berkeley and I remember when Steve Jobs finally graduated under the alias. I read a newspaper article about it at the time. I know all the places he talked about in his talk. Some of them are still there (except the phone booths, of course ;) ). Don't forget Steve is the one who put on the US Festival in 1982 which was a huge outdoor concert with all of the best bands of the day. He lost money so he pretty much did it for the same altruistic reasons that he helped the other people who worked at apple.

    I am watching this video again after many years. It just reminded me why I loved Woz so much. It's like he has figured life out!
    Woz is such an honest, kind and just an overall fun person! I loved his autobiography. To anyone here who still hasn't read it: you HAVE to read it. That book changed my life for the good.

    I've been reading Job's biography and I find it fascinating how similar yet different the two Steve's are. They are a perfect match in terms of creativity and pure engineering genius. If Woz had his way you will be seeing free iphones or no apple at all haha. There is this account of he doesn't want to be an authority and manage people that when choosing to work full time with Apple or leave his job at HP he initially chose his secure job at HP. Even after some begging by Steve and his father, he didn't want to leave HP until someone said to him that he can just be a lifelong engineer at Apple.

    I was one of the fortunate few who actually owned an Apple II computer. Later I read an article in a magazine that Woz had actually formulated a previously unknown math calculation that improved the speed of a certain routine in the Apple II operating system. Still trying to find that article...
