Understanding the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15

  • I've heard people argue that Gentile believers are only required to obey the 4 commandments listed in Acts 15, but is that really what the Jerusalem Council decided?
Understanding the decision of the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 is very important, but did they really decide that there are only 4 commandments that Gentiles must obey? I think we need to take a closer look at what actually happened and why.

As a Muslim I liked it. Most of us think that after having faith laws aren't applied. Law can't save but faith can.
But we need to know laws are given to love God. Faith is also important.

Exactly at sunset for the start of Shabbat here in the UK the notification you'd published a teaching prompted by my question re the Jerusalem Council Acts 15 popped up on my desktop with a lovely assuring heart prompt to 'meditate on this today'. Did you not read the Bible? I hope before you die you get your faith out of yourself and put it on Jesus Christ ask him about where it says should we put a yolk on them that we couldn't do ourselves? Does that sound like they're going to tell them later that they should do it? Man do not be tricked I mean I don't even know how you could be tricked by that read it it's about as plain as a kids you should read the Bible literally a parable is a parable but when it says something plain as day you don't try to make it mean something completely different the Bible is clear your Works will not get you to heaven the Bible says faith without works is dead so there must be some context in there or else I would like for you to explain to me how the thief on the cross went to heaven? Right? Just believe what the Bible says and stop believing teachers that want to push self-righteousness they want you to think that you're not saved by the grace of God that you're actually saved by your adherence to the law or some strict form of behavior and Jesus Christ that's twisting the gospel up if God wanted you to know that you're saved by strict obedience to the law and by faith in Jesus Christ do you not think he would have made it just as plain and clear as day you wouldn't have to wonder about it a bit? That Bible verse that he is talking about you read that whole thing it's obvious they're not planning on telling them later how to do the law telling them later how to keep the Sabbath or how not to eat bacon you can't be serious? I don't know how long this has been for you or if you'll ever see this well it says for years but maybe you'll still see this at some point but man I sure hope you wake up and put your faith in Jesus Christ and not in religion

Sir, why did you skip Acts 15: 13 & FF?
When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:
16 “‘After this I will return
    and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
    Its ruins I will rebuild,
    and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[b]-
18 things known from long ago.[c]
19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

A continued reading of Galatians five seems to show Paul having not unlearned the lies either. He told them DO NOT let yourselves be circumcised. Twice! He said that doing so would devalue Christ and commit them to the whole law. He also said it would be a fall from grace. What scripture tells the gentiles to later get circumcised? Not an assumption but an actual verse because Galatians 5 is an actual clear warning.

The verse he mentions at 1:13. According to him this is about the Pharisees saying Gentiles must be circumcised in order to be saved, but the verse itself says that the elders and apostles met together to discuss the issue which the Pharisees raised, the issue being whether it is "necessary to circumcise them [Gentiles], and to command them to keep the law of Moses."
So clearly, the Jerusalem Council was meeting together to discuss whether the Gentiles should be made to keep the law of Moses. It was not solely about the issue of circumcision for salvation.
Lex fails to unpack this whole verse in its context, but rather leaves bits out according to his own agenda.

Wait, so does this mean we should eventually get circomcised even though it's not required? I mean it was part of the Torah I think(or at least doing it to 8 day old infants was), but didn't Paul say that if you are uncircumcised, don't seek to be circumcised?

    • @jordan7985
      @jordan7985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Griffin Nunnelee 💯. Scripture with scripture makes things clear. Your example is good 💪🏼
Another thing, Notice Paul said he became like Gentiles to win them over. If Paul believed he was bound to the law, then he would be acting contrary to his beliefs when evangelizing to Gentiles. He would be a hypocrite.
I noticed that he stated in the video that these 4 things were given so as not to burden the gentile believers, and they’d figure it out later. This is treating the believers as “new Christians”, but The believers in Antioch who the message was given to were not new converts! They were under the teaching Paul for 2 years, and still weren’t circumcised.
This is incredible when you consider the fact that Paul, a Pharisee, didn’t believe they needed to be, and he is not rebuked for not doing so.

Since Law is spiritual and after Jesus Christ resurrection, it has been to spiritual level. For now, circumcision been taken to circumcision of heart, for Paul being or not being circumcision is nothing, but keeping of the commandments. Hence it is now circumcision of the whole body through baptism, you are dead to this body, and now we live after spirit and the law that is spiritual is applicable to this spirit.. the body is dead.

I get your point, but grace - when understood for what it really is - REQUIRES obedience. To most Christians, grace is a free pass. But grace was a secular term, used during the Roman empire at the time Jesus lived on earth, and it describes the relationship between the patron and the client. It is a patron - client relationship. For the best teaching on Grace, watch "What is Grace" on the TH-cam channel "Founded In Truth".

@@peteholms9298the Bible itself defines throughout what it means by law. Read the Bible in its context. Context is king and will help protect from twisted doctrine. Compare scripture. With scripture. Look how the Bible doesn’t change our gender or our nationality when we get saved, but He did make the ground level at the cross. He tore down the partition between Jew and Gentile so we can both be a part of His family. The wild branch doesn’t get grafted into the natural branch but into the root. Many verses are clear in context. The Holy Spirit will guide you to clearly understand the truth of Scripture. In our flesh we want rules that help us feel spiritual instead of relying on Christ’s righteousness alone both for salvation and for sanctification. Read through Hebrews, Romans, Galatians, Colossians, Acts. In understanding Israel-both the National and Spiritual Israel (Jewish believers) read through the first books of the Bible. So many shadows that point towards the later reality, the substance. When a person walks towards we see a shadow, when they are here the shadow fades away.

    Mr. Lex Meyer
first I'd like to thank you for your efforts to show the people the truth of the Gospel and the true word of God.
I have a question, PLEASE asnwer if u see my comment:
I'm quite convinced that we christians should also observe the old testament including food laws, contrary to what is told that we are free from the Law (Old Testament). But my question is: some commandments are not just difficult but also impractical for us in this time, for example, there are many researches carried out on different species of animals which are cited as unclean animals, and if as aresearcher u want to observe the commandments, u should stay out of the city after u are done with the laboratory and want to go back home, which means, as a biologist, you will have to stay the whole your life out of the city.... I can see that the Law has cared about the medical aspects of lives of the ancient jews, and by observing these rules, jews didn't get many potential diseases which exist, but I'm confused how to observe this commandment in the present time ?
Or for example, killing the people who do adultery, although I'm totally against it, but KILLING these people is something that I can never accept... I'd rather do what Yeshua did as the addulteress woman was brought to him: go and don't sinn anymore....
Could you please comment on these questions
Best Regards and God be with you

And you added that they was given those four laws to ease them into the rest of the commandments. It doesn’t say that in the scripture. Love you guys tho, just calling it how I see it. The decision of this council was incredibly plain. The Yoke Peter spoke of was the Law of Moses. The Gentiles were not expected to be circumcised at any point. Look at how angry Paul is in Galatians just for them adding a single work of the Law to the Gospel. Paul hated the false gospel of the Judaizers and so should we.

he taught correctly because if acts 15 is where the law was never taught why would paul say in
romans 3:31 do we then make void the law through faith ELOHIM FORBID yea we establish the law
1 corinthians 7:19 circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of Elohim
romans 2:12-13 and as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law and whosoever sinned in the law shall be judged by the law for not the hearers of the law are just before Elohim but the doers of the law shall be justified.
romans 7:12 wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good. ( and thats what paul means when he talks about good works )
colossians 1:10 that you might work mightily to YAH to all pleasing being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of Elohim
romans 16:19 for your obedience is made abroad to all men i am glad therefore on your behalf but I would still make you wise to that which good ( the law ) and simple concerning evil.
acts 24:14 but this I confess to you that after the way which they call heresy so worship I the Elohim of my fathers believing all things are written in the torah and in the prophets
romans 7:25 I thank Elohim always through Yeshua Ha'mashiach our adonai that with the mind I myself may serve the TORAH OF ELOHIM but with my flesh the law of sin. This isn't judaizing people it's following Elohims torah and being part of the Spirit
      Romans 8:1-2,4,6-7,9
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Ha'mashiach Yeshua who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Ha'mashiach Yeshua has made me free from the law of sin and death.
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against Elohim nor it is not subject to the law of Elohim neither indeed can be.
But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of Elohim dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ( which is keeping the torah ) he is none of his.

And by the way @Lex. to refrain from eating from "...things strangled" is in reference to the law of Kosher. Clean and Unclean animals.
Strangled meat means animals who were not slaughtered in the way God has specified (a swift manner of slaughtering and having the blood completely drained). Being that these animals either died naturaly, or by desease, or choked. Animals who die by those means are then called "strangled", and their meat is called "strangled meat"
But in the first place, the apostles wouldnt call an unclean animal's meat as food because the Law of Clean and Unclean meats never called the meat of unclean animals as food. And the apostles, being jews, know that law very well.
That said, it is a common knowledge to jews and gentiles together AT THAT TIME. Meaning, they all do recognize the law of Clean and Unclean.
It is evident, because there is nowhere in scripture that says or references that the law of Clean and Unclean meat is done for. It was always there from the beginning :)

But now christian bound with Jesus and apostles law. This Apostle decision also repeat in Acts 15:29 & Acts 21:25 without must do shabbat law for gentile

The issue was not simply circumcision, but was spelled out in verses 1 and 5: it was whether or not the Gentiles had to be circumcised and follow the Law of Moses (that’s why the sign of circumcision was out forth by them as a must).
And it wasn’t just a “follow the law in order to be saved, as the Group in verse 1 declared, but the Group in verse 5 (the group who logically are found to be the ones who sent out those who troubled the Gentile believers in Messiah) said that they were to be commanded to follow the Law of Moses (and didn’t say it was in order for the Gentiles to be saved- just that they had to follow it).

What about stoning a sinner to death? Are we to follow the laws? In the old testament, everything was in the flesh, except for those that had faith ( to them it was counted as right with God, such as Rahab). We need to love the Lord with all of our hearts, minds and souls, and love our neighbors as ourselves. When in the spirit the body is absent, when in the flesh the spirit is absent.

RelaxHound also I think the dinosaurs (most of them died in the flood) this is why they are buried in dirt and mud and fossilized also people don’t seem to understand that fast moving water wears and ages things fast so a worldwide flood could age rocks fast this is why carbon dating says millions of years when it is definitely not that old

CHRISTIAN TRUTH It matters because if the Earth shape is flat then all space agencies and government are stealing our hard earned money to show us cartoons. CHRISTIAN TRUTH Those fossils are not real, all dinosaurs in museums are fake replicas or so they say. The "real" bones are kept in a vault and have never being showed to the public. This is why the debate spurt of wether the Bible actually mentions any of this. Please of you are not going to answer with proof, don't do it. I want Biblical truth, not an opinion.

    • @messianictruth4653
      @messianictruth4653 6 ปีที่แล้ว

RelaxHound well the Bible has a couple of possible mentions of dinosaurs although there is no proof the Bible speaks of them also the Bible is not a scientific text book (don’t get me wrong it knew things about the world before science proved it) the Bible is a book instructing us how to seek, love, and have a relationship with God. As for the flat earth most of the verses people use in defense of a flat earth are symbolic and not meant to be taken literally the rest are semi poetic which also must be taken with a grain of salt. Also a few verse used by flat earthers can also be used against them so yeah. The funny thing is it was the Bible that encouraged Christians to study the cosmos and to explore the universe our lord created these Christians discovered the earth rotated around the sun and that the earth rotates. Flat earthers like to say the Bible says the earth is the center of the universe. I say just because the earth isn’t the center of the solar system doesn’t mean it isn’t the center of the universe. Also a flat earth is basically impossible also it was impossible for nasa to fake the moon landing. It would have been easier to put someone on the moon then to fake the moon landing at the time.

If we are to follow all the Mosaic law does that mean when a woman has a baby she needs to follow the law? When she has her menstrual cycle? Or are we getting into a lot of legalism here?

I know probably no one will read this, but here is my take on the law. The law was first given to Moses on Sinai on tables of stones. Paul says that those stones were superseded by something greater, that something being grace (the Messiah). However, this doesn't mean that the law has no place in obedience to the will YAH, but with the arrival of the Messiah, we now have an example of how we are to walk in the law. With only the tablets, we could keep it but due to mans corrupt nature, imagination, and personal interpretation, we would go along to perform it as we see fit, which is not what the Most High intended. But through the actions of the Messiah, who is the law made flesh, we have a much clearer instruction/example of the way we are to walk in the law; and our end goal to work towards. However, with a sinful nature, we should know that our works of the law are not what will save us; but our faith in the Messiah. And if we truly love him we will keep his commandments as best we possibly can. I pray this helps someone. Shalom!!!

I ask this question not to argue but to learn more. You said that this is the first step. But the letter in acts 15 did not say first step it is said not to be add a heavier burden. I remember in genesis after the flood: After the Great Flood, God changes the rule, allowing consumption of meat: “Every creature that lives shall be yours to eat; as with the green plants, I give you all these” (Gen. 9:3). There are, however, restrictions: “You must not, however, eat flesh with its life-blood in it. What is yoyr thoughts on this?

the laws regarding foods did not change while Elohim did say in genesis 2:16-17 And YAH Elohim commanded the man saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it for in the day that you eat thereof you shalt surely die. there is no scripture which says they couldn't eat meat but that could have dominion over them ( genesis 1:26) and Elohim didnt say to noah eat whatever you want in genesis 9:3 he said all the herb bearing seeds shall be meat for you genesis 1:29 And God said Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth and every tree in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed to you it shall be for meat. so when we look at genesis 9:3 Every moving HERB BEARING SEED ( remember gen 1:29) that lives shall be meat for you even as the green herb have I given you all things. so Elohim wasnt talking about all the animals but all the plants so no violation of the torah whatsoever

    • @methodius--9405
      @methodius--9405 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Red Man I will of course tell you why I asked. Many people have been taught that the second of the Ten Commandments prohibits icons. However, if correct, all artistic representations of anything would be forbidden. The Lord Himself in the same book of Exodus commanded Moses to make two gold cherubim (angels) “of hammered work,” and to place them at each end of the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant (Ex 25:17-21). The Lord also stipulated that the ten curtains of the tabernacle be woven with images of cherubim on them (Ex 26:1), and likewise the veil (Ex 26:31).
When King Solomon built the temple, the huge basin, or “sea,” was set upon twelve statues of oxen (3Kg 7:13, 30). And upon the ten bases of the sea were cast or engraved “lions, oxen, and cherubim” (3Kg 7:16), as well as palm trees (3Kg 7:22). The Lord bestowed His blessing upon all these artistic representations first by filling the new temple with His Glory (3Kg 8:10, 11), and then by declaring to Solomon, “I have consecrated this house which you have built to put My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually” (3Kg 9:3).
Perhaps a most striking example of an image made at God’s command in the Old Testament is the bronze serpent that God ordered Moses to make and put on a pole in order to protect the Hebrews bitten by the deadly serpents (Nm 21:4-9; see Jn 3:14, 15). Hundreds of years later, when the Israelites were offering incense to this same bronze serpent in a kind of idol-worship, King Hezekiah, who “did what was right in the sight of the Lord,” had the serpent smashed into pieces (4Kg 18:3, 4).
So it is not the image itself which is faulty or prohibited, but rather its improper use. The prohibition in Exodus 20:4 is not against all artistic representations. Rather, it is against images, whether in human form or not, which would be worshipped as gods and goddesses-“gods of silver, and gods of gold” (Ex 20:23). For the Lord knew that such images would tempt the Hebrews to depart from worshipping Him, the One true God (Ex 20:3-5).
Certainly, before the invisible and limitless Lord God of Israel became incarnate, it was impossible to make an image of Him. However, after God the Son assumed a visible and tangible human body, it was natural and beneficial for the Church to create artistic representations of Him-and of His holy Mother, and of the saints and angels-from the earliest times. According to tradition, St. Luke the Evangelist made at least three icons of Christ and His Mother.
Every image, or icon , of Christ has significant theological content. For it proclaims anew the Incarnation of God, who “became flesh” for our salvation (Jn 1:14). Recognized icons of our Savior, prayerfully made, provide us with inspired, trustworthy representations of Him.
The Seventh Ecumenical Council, held in Nicea in AD 787, condemned the heresy of iconoclasm (the rejection, and even destruction, of icons). These Holy Fathers articulated the critical distinction between the worship reserved for God alone, and the veneration/honor/ reverence given to the icons. In addition, this Council declared that “the honor given to the image passes on to that which the image represents.”
Through icons, Orthodox Christians are drawn closer to Christ. A hymn sung the first Sunday of Great Lent, which commemorates the restoration of icons in AD 843, declares: “the icons that depict Thy flesh lead us to the desire and love of Thee.”

Peter says that God gave the Gentiles the Spirit, and “cleansed their hearts by faith” ... which fits with what Paul also said in Galatians 3 to the troubled Gentiles (who were going back under circumcision & thus the law): “I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?”...(Like Peter said, they received the Spirit and God cleansed their hearts by faith) “Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” (The yoke Peter describes)
    ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:2-3‬ ‭NIV
The second part of the Galatians passage, “After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”
Isn’t talking about the first step, or of salvation, either- Paul is addressing how to LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE. From beginning to end, it’s through the Spirit, by faith.
    (See also Romans 1:17:
“For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed-a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”)
We’re not supposed to simply LEARN how to live the right way, but to let the SPIRIT LIVE the right way through us.
    By faith. First to last.
Yes, read the Word. Study the Torah and Tanakh, and the New Testament.
But more to the point, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NASB‬

But it does seem like Peter is saying they don't need to try to keep the whole law even for obedience reasons. I've found that walking by the Spirit and prayerful study of the word has led me to eat only clean meats, to keep the Sabbath, and to avoid the pagan holidays and be aware of the feasts (though I don't exactly "celebrate" them). However, I don't think my aim should be to keep the whole Torah (which is impossible anyway because of the sacrificial laws). If I had a child, I wouldn't circumcise him, for example.

For those who say Paul tells us we don't need to keep the Law, I say either you don't understand Paul correctly or he's a heretic. I've spent the past 11 years defending Paul and saying he taught the Law. To be honest I've been doubting that lately. I'm very good at defending Paul and the Law. I'm currently up in the air as to whether we should continue to defend Paul.

the greatest save in the council was not to mandate circumcision for salvation.
If we know whether we should have circumcision later in life or not?
I stand that circumcision is not required for believers.
Through Paul's letters, the Gentile churches received commandments and put away any teachings that required them to conform to Jewish culture to be saved or believers.
Hopefully, Lex will talk about that. I would say Timothy but he was half-Jew so he went through circumcision so he can reach to the Jews. The letting go of Jewish law/culture was being able to eat non-Kosher food.

Hanging the whole argument in verse 21 is rather fishy the least. Verse 21 means that those who wants to follow The Law can do that if they wishes , because it is taught in the synagogues every week. But that there is no need to insist in the Law since God had given His approval to those who are turning to God through the experience of Peter and the miracles done through Paul and Bernabes. The jerusalen council does summarizes any and all binding obligation for Christians in regards to the Law and this applies to everyone, it doesn't matter if you are a recent convert or not. This passages does not make this kind of distinction. I repeat, verse 21 has nothing to do with the Christians, ver 21 has to do with those judaizers who are concerned about leaving the Law out. Jacob response is that is not totally out because Moses still being taught in the synagogue. If the purpose of James was to encourage Law keeping, then the whole purpose of the council is counterintuitive to what he himself advised to do. this video is a bad exegesis.

Kinda follows, then, that faith without works is dead. Could it be said that fidelity is a "work"? Could it be said that never bearing false witness is a work? Doing no murder is a work, yeah? Really, as I see it, being free of sin is worth the work, which is to say that we needn't steal, covet what our neighbors have, worship a made-up god, and so on. I'd say that to be free of sin is to not bother with it. I'm just asking, isn't that freedom in Christ? Why, then, would anyone need circumcision of the flesh? That's what gets me about the argument: wouldn't you think those guys would've been happy that Jesus fulfilled the law?

So basically Gentile believers need to become Jewish in order to become Christian. Didn't Paul take issue with Judaizers? The Jerusalem Council wasn't only about circumcision. It was also about keeping the Law of Moses. The Hebrews Epistle seems to strongly say believers in Christ are under a different covenant. Religion is full of confusion. The more I look into it, the more confused and frustrated I get. Faith shouldn't be so full of confusion and frustration.

I hear you. Those four commandments are a starting point. However, I don't think I would have converted if I had found out later that I had to get circumcised. Sure, I would like to have everlasting life, but as an adult, I would never get circumcised. I'm so glad my parents cut me when I was 8 days old. I would take purgatory rather than get circumcised as an adult. I'm just being honest and bet most men would accept purgatory rather than adult circumcision. Had the church told me after I converted, "Well enough time has passed, not you now must get cut." Then, I would un-convert. You probably would, too.
