      Maybe if they were playing with fire they’d have burns so it makes perfect sense to me. Swiss Army Knives don’t usually need locking blades in my opinion, except for the 111mm ones. Victor Unix has got it right already.

    The red knife... You call it a Trekker... Later you call it a Traveller, but surely it's actually an Explorer.

  • @simonh6371

    I think the reason people compare the 2 is that in fact the Pioneer i.e. Farmer without saw blade was the actual ''Swiss Army Knife'' meaning that it was issued to the Swiss Army 1961-2008. From 2008 to present the ''Soldier'' i.e. One-handed Trekker, but just with green nylon scales with grips in an ''Adidas'' 3 stripe configuration on each end of the scales, is issued to the Swiss Army. The Germany Army Issue knife (from the 90s I think) is the same but has plain olive green nylon scales with a Bundesadler (German Eagle) motif on them. Anyway I do have both. The Farmer is my EDC on a rotation with the Hiker, the Hiker because it has more or less the same toolset as the current Swiss / German Army issue knife (i.e. the one-handed Trekker). But I can't EDC the one-handed Trekker here in the UK because (a) the blade is longer than 3 inches and (b) it's a locking blade. The Soldier is for when I go wild camping / bushcrafting and anyway I'm going above and beyond those limitations, as I carry a fixed blade knife - Mora or Linder - and the Soldier is secondary. I just like having a saw capability as EDC although I very rarely use it. For scissors I also EDC a Classic, they're small but very capable. Plus a ''medium'' multitool for pliers and extra blade, the SOG microclip, or a bladeless Gerber MP600 if I'm carrying a bag, again both are UK EDC legal, unlike most Leathermans. The Squirt is just too small to be of any use for fixing my mountain bike or whatever.

    I carry the _Pioneer X_ for daily EDC and the _Soldier 08_ if I'm somewhere in the outskirts like in the forrest, the mountains or even somewhere in my backyard.
    The beauty with Victorinox knifes is that you can choose from so many models, depending on what functions might be more or less important for anyone. ;)

    Have to say I'm always a little surprised at how many videos mention a SAKs ability (or lack thereof) to strike a ferro rod. Just about every rod I've bought in recent years has had a dedicated striker tethered to the handle, which I much prefer to putting extra wear on any of the tools on my SAK.

    What about the serrated blade option on Trakker?

  • @GlockNinja
    @GlockNinja ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing I like about the Farmer is the awl. Other than that, in my opinion the Farmer offers me nothing but a waste of time. The hard rough alox scales is not something I would want to carry around in my pants pocket and it's definitely nothing I want to hold in my hands on a cold day.
    I used to carry a one handed open flipper pocket knife and a Swiss Champ as my EDC. 100 percent of the time when I needed a blade, I would go to my flipper because it was so convenient and then I would go to my Champ for tools like the bottle opener, can opener, and saw. I even used the magnifying glass to read cooking instruction.
    Then one day I found my Trekker. The Trekker eliminated the need for the flipper pocket knife. I added a pocket clip to the Trekker which glued on the side of the Trekker handle via 3m tape. I also added a peanut lighter to the key ring of the Trekker. Now it is my one and only EDC pocket knife / tool. Well...I also wear a peanut Rough Ryder knife on my neck sheath.
    I do miss carrying my SAK Swiss Champ which I keep in my EDC sling pouch these days. I made videos of them. By the way, good video. I subbed. :-)

    Maybe it's a tenuous link but the thing they have in common is the Swiss Military. The OHT is the civilian version of the Soldier knife, which has been issued to the Swiss Army since 2008, with green nylon scales and textured grips in black, and no toothpick or tweezers. Prior to that it entered service in the German Army, but with green nylon scales with a German Eagle embossed.
    The Farmer is like the previous Soldier knife, i.e. the one actually issed to Swiss soldiers, with the addition of a saw. The old Soldier is just a Pioneer without a keyring attachment.
    I own both and they're both good outdoor knives. If I'm going overnighting in the woods I'll take both, the Soldier in a pouch or in my backpack, the Farmer in my pocket. But for just a day out or even for EDC I have to take the Farmer, since here in the UK we're not allowed to carry locking knives without good reason.

      I don't live in England but, isn't everyday tasks a good reason to carry a multi tool? I mean what else would be a good reason?

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikejeffsteel Firstly it's about the locking blade rather than a multitool per se....the law is a bit vague about what constitutes valid reason...they cite examples like it's needed for a job or hobby. I keep my rebar in a pouch containing bike repair tools, carried inside another bag so I think that's okay but I can't be 100% sure! A lot is up to the discretion of the policeman and depends on circumstances. Certainly nobody here would carry a locking blade multitool on a belt unless a tradesman. Even then they shouldn't really walk into a supermarket with it on but I guess in a village it happens.

    Assuming you don’t need pliers in your gear, the farmer is a great step up from the cadet if you are going to EDC it in the woods or to complement a fixed blade. The one handed trekker is nice as a stand alone folder for when you need a knife to get you fire but don’t need the full strength of a fixed blade but more firepower than the farmer. Of course the Classic SD always has scissors close at hand!

    Put a magnifying lense, tooth pick, and tweezers on the Farmer and it could be almost perfect. A lanyard attached to the key ring could make it one hand opening. I’ve survived 60+ years using slip-joint knives so a locking blade is not crucial to me.
    One could replace the toothpick with the compatible ferro rod, then square off the edge on the bottle opener screw driver to improve versatility.
    Just thoughts. But, I’ve tried and Victorinox is not interested in my thoughts. 😀

    The Trekker might also be illegal---has a locking blade and the length is beyond 3`as is the saw blade. I`m assuming all `lock-able`blades are illegal in the US as it they are in the UK. Countries seem to have near identical knife laws. Casnada included.
    want a poket knife for EDCÉ Pioneer X. Not sure how long the saw blade is in the Farmer...i`d make sure it`s 3`or less...assuming it is. Or that could get one into trouble...on the very rare chance you`re stopped and you have to produce your knife.
    So odd to me that there are so many pocket knives on the market today that are mostly illegal to carry in public. :)) Most of them are. Because most have blades longer than 3`and are lockkig (liner, frame.....)...

      Apples and oranges. Both are good. Don't underrate the Farmer. the thick blade is shorter than a 111mm blade, but makes for a strong design feature. A lot of good bushcrafting gets done with it.

      @Chiefs500 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You are not only rude, you apparently cannot read. You made an "unsupported" claim in you original response. I did not say it was unfounded. It seems obvious to me that neither knife is "far superior" to the other; it all depends on what your intended use is. Anyone should be able to see that. For me the Farmer is a much better EDC than the Trekker. The Trekker is too big and bulky for that purpose. The awl on the Farmer is also more useful. As for the blade and saw, both are compromise tools. If I am in the woods I also carry a bushcraft or hunting knife and a small folding saw. Both of those tools are far superior to those found on the Trekker. The Trekker suits some folks but it offers no advantages to me.
