    I've carryed mine for 15 years. I live in northern Canada and am hunting, fishing, and exporing the back country pretty much daily. Often the only equipment I have on me is that Farmer... I've even field dressed a few deer with it. Mine was almost confiscated at a hockey game in Edmonton recently, so I switched to a "Hiker", easyer to replace, the spare blade and philips are handy.

      Hi Everything JI, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah that is the problem today. When I was 13, many years ago most of us would carry a knife for fishing and camping and just messing about. The best way to get your parents consent is to have a use for the knife. If you are thinking about going camping or fishing then it is nothing more than a necessary tool. I think with the knife crime as it is a lot of parents worry. But if you need one to do a job, then you need one. Thank you for the sub.... it is very much appreciated, all the best, Mark :)

      @markbailey2981  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Marc, many thanks for watching :) I am not familiar with the boker range, but 12c27 is a nice stainless to work with. I find that it can be sharpened easier than most other stainless blades. I tend to find that some Victorinox can be more tricky to re-sharpen once the edge has gone as the steel is hard. The edge does last for a long time, but if I was choosing I would look at 12c27. I hope this helps. Have a great weekend, all the best. Mark :)

    I love Alox swiss army knives they just feel higher quality and that thicker blade is fantastic, i'm a bit stuck between 2 models at the moment, i like the farmer but i also like the pioneer harvester/swiss army seven. the seven has a hawkbill blade in addition to the regular one and im not sure how often i would use the can opener these days as most stuff has ring pulls. the other thing is that the harvester for some reason doesnt have a keyring so i couldnt have a lanyard or hang it off a carabiner. reckon the farmer might win this one. cheers for sharing all the best from Bristol

    This video was a breath of fresh air. I have friends who either underappreciate or downright hate Swiss Army knives, and they just can't understand why I like the Spartan, Camper, or Farmer Swiss Army knives as a multi-tool pocket knife. They all buy Cold Steel knives, btw. Not that there's anything wrong with owning Cold Steel knives, because I own a Laredo Bowie which is great for chopping and splitting wood, among other camp duties. And I own a Large Espada knife, which is just a showy fighting knife. In all probability I will never need to use it for anything. I only ever used it to sharpen a nephew's drawing pencil when he asked me to. lol

    Hi Mark, hope you're doing well, my friend. Good review on this awesome bit of kit. The Farmer is a pretty good choice for a 'Bushcraft' swiss army knife. If I was to compare it with a standard cellidor version of a SAK, the Victorinox Hiker is a good alternative, a bit cheaper as well. Take care.
    Tip 1: Make your Farmer much more ergonomic, by removing the split ring, and filing down the little tab at the end with a metal file. Put some electrical tape on the end of the knife's body, around the tab, to stop if from scratching.
    Tip 2: The wire stripper is much more efficient when used in conjunction with the main blade of the knife, to score the wire.

      Hi Ed, I hope you are keeping well brother. Thanks for the tips my friend. Someone else mentioned about filing down the split ring tab as well. I only have a small hand and the tip does sometimes rub on the inside of the hand. I might give that a go. Yeah, good call about using the blade to score the coating of the wire. I have seen it done like that. My dad and older brother were sparkies (electricians), and I think I may have picked up their bad habit of just pulling the coating off lol. Cheers Ed, Take care my friend, all the best, Mark.

      @@markbailey2981 Totally agree about removing the key-ring. On this weight of knife, who would really wear it on their keys?!? What were Victorinox thinking? You do not see it on the issued Alox Soldier (which, as the Alox Pioneer, was issued to the civilian market with just the addition of the key-ring). You do not see it on the Alox Solo or the Alox Army 7.
      The problem with it is that it creates a real hot-stop on the palm of you hand.
      The good news is that it is easy to remove. A small hack-saw and a dremel will do the job in five minutes. Once done, you have one hell of a great outdoorsman tool.

    Do you know this Farmer comes with the same saw like the traditional red 91 mm swiss army knives?
    I really love my Pioneer X, Cadet and Solo alox knives. The thing I appreciate the most that the alox scales are really wear ressistants. Much tougher than the red plastic scales. Also the bit tougher blades and springs are really good in everyday use.

      @markbailey2981  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lev, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍. I have just measured the knife and saw and the knife when closed is 92 mm, and the saw is about 73 mm. I'm not 100% sure if it is the same saw as the red knives, but it looks the same as the ones I have seen. I measured them so you can compare if you already have one with a saw. I agree the alox scales are a nice addition. They are a lot more rugged and wear resistant. I have lost scales off the red swiss army knives in the past, but these look like they will last. Hey friend! Another great video👍🏻 I have been eyeing one of these for a while. Especially for that awl. It seemed to make short work of that hole. Also I have been looking at the trekker. About the pocket... I have seen a pretty popular guy on here Joe Robinet put a key ring on his belt loop and tie bank line from the ring to that little lanyard on the knife. Not sure it would help you get it out of the pocket but it’s so you can’t drop it and lose it. I imagine you could do the same with it in its sheath. Great informative video again🙂 I think I may pick one up now👍🏻 Those are some beautiful woods you have in England

      Hi Spider5001, Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment my friend. I may take you up on the advice of fastening the knife to the key ring. I have a tendency to loose smaller knives like this. I think I must of lost about 10 or so over the years, or I have given them away. I am very happy with the farmer. It has a good selection of useful tool (well for me they are useful), and the price is very good too. Yeah we do have some nice areas here in England. Just like any country really, Good and bad. The woodlands here aren't anything like they use to be unfortunately. According to old records, they recon that you could climb a tree in the South of the country and clamber your way all the way to Scotland without having to touch the ground. Most were cut down for the wooden war ships, farming and fuel. Now we have small pockets surrounded by motorways and factories!! Thanks again Spider, have a great day, all the best, Mark.

    I use the back of a saw on a 10ish year old SAK Camper with a ferro rod, so the tools are a little looser and it's never folded on me. Maybe it'll be a hazard in 20 years time? It's a Camper, got a new one for £14 recently. No need to be using worn out ones. I really like my Farmer, especially the beefed up blade and forward facing awl though the Campers tweezers, pen blade and thinner awl are a great little first aid kit in a country with lots of brambles and general thorns, some more manky than others.

    • @simonh6371

      If you find a Classic cheap (they're around a tenner) and use that in conjunction with the Farmer you get the bonus of scissors too, that way you can use the Classic for ''clean'' jobs like grooming, first aid, indoor jobs, and the Farmer for dirty outdoor jobs. Combined weight of the 2 is 108g as opposed to the Hiker's 68g but spacewise I think the 2 are more compact.

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonh6371 I solved the issue. Got a Gerber Dime, it has tweezers, a pen sized blade, scissors, pliers and others. In conjunction with the Farmer it's a good tool set.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jelkel25 Yeah that's a pretty good solution, covers all tools and you have 2 blades. Actually I was looking at a multitool as well, to have up to 3 tools as EDC i.e. Classic + Farmer + Multitool with pliers...I wouldn't always carry all 3 though, just classic if going to the shop or cafe walking, add multitool if going somewhere by bike, add farmer if going to work or out of town on bike and so on. Looking at Dime & Vise but I've seen a mix of good and bad reviews about it. I don't want to splash out on a Leatherman either. So at the moment I'm torn between Boker mini (but there are absolutely no reviews on this of any kind, not even in German) and the SOG multiclip which like every multitool has its positives and negatives.

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonh6371 As regards a Boker Mini there's reviews on Heinnie Haynes in the UK. I have a full sized Boker Tech Tool 4. They're well made and have a great Sandvik blade. Mine is heavy for how useful it is, I have lighter better options. Never used a mini.

      Mark Bailey - Hey. that's a trick I learned years ago on the "Boy Scout" pocket knife. I still own several. Carried one everyday since I was 8 or 9?. Several years ago, I tried the "Pioneer", then the "Farmer", because of the saw. It's the perfect sized pocket tool (IMO), not my main pocket blade. Yes, I get teased because of what all I carry in my pockets, until the tool is "needed" - ha. On this farmer, I also used a Dremel and carefully ground/removed the lanyard "ring". I found it made it more comfortable in my hand. The ring would stab me in the palm while using it. I also tried the One Hand Trekker NS, because I wanted the saw. Great knife, but it was just to bulky for me. Thanks again.

    The way I like to use the back of the saw blade as a ferro rod striker is to open the saw, put a little piece of wood under it, then close it again. You can then strike your ferro rod without worrying about the saw closing up on your hand.

      Not really.
      The Pioneer (same as the Farmer bu no saw) and the Farmer were introduced in 1957. The Pioneer was then selected to be the base for the Alox Soldier ("model 1961") that was issued to the soldiers of the Swiss Army between 1962 and 2008.
      So the Pioneer (and the Farmer) is the predecessor of the Alox Soldier, not the other way around as many people think.

    GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO...I must admit, I do like this Farmer knife. I like the slightly more beefed up tools and the reamer as part of the main tool set and not on the back of the knife as an secondary tool. I have the Huntsman which I have had for about the last 25 years! And love it but could probably cope with this slightly smaller tool set on the farmer. The only thing that is missing on the Farmer is the scissors. They do bome in handy in my opinion. AND FINALLY someone who actually knows how to use the wire stripper on the Swiss Army Knife! Bravo! I've seen some pretty peculiar TH-cam videos on how to use the wire stripper. This is the correct way.

      Hi Kieron, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. For the money, I think this is one of the best knives Victorinox make. Very robust, and for me a decent selection of tools. Everyone has their own preferences of course. I'm glad it didn't come with the corkscrew. I'm glad you think I'm using the wire stripper in the right way. I've seen various ways of doing as well. Some where people use the blade to cut through the coating. In all honesty I usually use my teeth. So using it in a similar way seems logical. I don't fancy running metal wire over the edge of the blade. Thanks again Kieron, all the best, Mark. :)
