The statement "and now am currently effing up a slice of carrot cake" has been etched upon my lexicon list of "I did not see THAT phrase coming." (Carrot cake doesn't get nearly enough love these days, tbh--and I say this as a chocoholic!)

Since you like carrot cake and chocolate, may I suggest carrot cake with chocolate sauce on top? It's really popular here in Brazil and some people will literally fight for a piece of it at gatherings.

"I think I was the Karen" story: when my family moved from the city to a more rural area, we found that our neighbor's cow got out and visited our lawn. Our reaction was to laugh hysterically, and then help the neighbor get her back. She kept visiting several more times, and it just got funnier every time we found her there, because we never knew when she'd show up. The neighbor kept trying to rebuild her pen to be stouter and stronger... but she's a very persistent cow.
We recently sold the house to some friends... and we left the phone number to the neighbor who owns the cow on the fridge door, so the new homeowners will have it. Just in case she comes back, so they'll know who to call. 🐄

There's definitely more to the pig story than loud music and a dirty look. Farmers don't tend to have the type of disposable income for petty revenge to the tune of $100k to get permits, build a pig barn, and order pigs. If a farmer isn't already a pig farmer, they're not going to decide to start raising pigs out of a little spite. Farmers days are full from sun up to sun down, they're not going to just add new work to fit into their already packed days.

    • @hodgeelmwood8677

      @iamthecheese2737 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@hodgeelmwood8677 context matters, as does reading and comprehension. I didn't say a farmer wouldn't or couldn't do these things, what I said is a farmer wouldn't do these things out of simple spite over music and dirty looks. Hence the "there's more to the story than she's telling". I've had family members who were farmers their whole lives. Taking on more work and deciding to spend money excessively is not something they do lightly or willy-nilly. It's either done as a business decision or it's gotta be extremely important, as what they make in a 6 month season is used to fund the household for the entire year including preparing for the next season. Retribution for dirty looks is not "extremely important". All that aside, we don't actually know this happened. It's a story on Reddit, that doesn't automatically make it fact. So your assertion "And yet he somehow.... Yada yada yada", may not even be based on a true event, at the very least someone's exaggerated recollection. Or most likely as everyone's pointed out, half truths and withheld information.

It depends on the country, location within the country, and how the land is zoned+defined. This would be legal in a lot of rual places in the southern USA states on lands that's zoned agricultural.
Im only really familiar with certain parts of agricultural farmland in Kentucky USA, Georgia USA, and Tennessee USA. There are often limits of how far from the property borders large structures and animal housing are allowed to be, but that distance feels and seems a lot smaller when the area is so wide open. 30 feet seems like a LOT in a city where things are closer together but can seem like nothing at all on farmland that is practically empty with everything spread out.
I'm assuming op is exagerating when they say 20 feet from the house, but the scent and noise can definitely travel quite a bit and make it feel like it's right next to the house.
It's also not unheard of for very small, close knit agriculture towns to overlook things here and there on purpose, particularly if it's somone well liked in the community who is doing it, and couple may not be fully versed in the legalities enough to question or involve a lawyer (not to mention how expensive lawyers are).
This is also a common tactic used to drive people out of the community so that neighbors can purchase their land.

Once our dogs got out and wandered onto his property and he decided the appropriate response was shooting them with buckshot. We also caught him sabotaging the trees that were in the contested area even after my Dad resurveyed the land and paid for it when asked. All this is to say is that OP didn't really do anything wrong and those farmers are just more small minded petty people that will take any offense and make it into a generational war if they have to. The only reason it won't affect me is I left my home town and have no intention of returning. There are nuisance laws, contruction laws etc etc etc, was it legal to build the pig barn that close to the property line ?? was it build according to code (I am sure a pig barn should have ventilation, but what kinf and is it installed properly etc) The small you might not be able to do much about, but the sound I think you act upon still, as before and after a certain hour of the day, it can be considered noise polution etc etc. So I would look into all those things, never piss of someone who can be destructive to some pork.

Having been a farmer, having had farmer neighbours And having had a few pigs, l struggle with this first story.
Most farmers live a decent distance away from each other. To be bothered by one’s neighbours music would require some sizable speakers.
Even in the country there are building codes on domestic and farm buildings.
Building a piggery on a boundary line without the correct ventilation systems doesn’t sound right.
To get the legal building permits takes months as all buildings have to meet those codes, and a notice of intent would have been issued to all the surrounding neighbours so they would have the right to contest the construction, long before the neighbours would be purchasing pigs. Being permitted to construct a piggery on a boundary line next to a domestic dwelling doesn’t make sense. Especially the numbers of pigs that constitute a commercial business. This issue would have gone straight to court.
I will conclude that pigs are really clean animals, unfortunately a lot of owners mistreat and poorly house their pigs so the poor animals end up living in their own waste. My pigs free roamed in very large paddocks. They had a small pond in which they could wallow, and they slept in clean dry sheds with clean fresh hay every night. I should add that it didn’t snow in winter where l lived so housing pigs was easier than if it had. And yes we had shit loads more farm animals which are too many to be included so the pigs were just a small part of daily chores.

So #2: Neighbors got pissed off because the girl told them to control their animal and they didn't like "her kind" (wonder if she had a different skin color) telling them what to do so decided to be asses about it. I grew up on a farm and the OP has nothing to apologize for, if anything the farmers should have apologized for their cow getting out and ruining the neighbors lawn. Animals get out but it is the owners duty to try to keep them contained and to keep them from damaging the property of others.
Bet the neighbors were hoping to buy the land (or had been using it when it was vacant) and are now pissed they don't have it.

Story 2: Sure OP was an asshole and should have apologized for how they handled to cow situation. Still 9pm is a reasonable time to still be making noise, talking from a town with farm experience. If it really bothered them the way hand to handle it was go out and ask to turn it down, no yelling. They went nuclear for petty revenge level. Everybody sucks but neighbor could go to amithedevil.
Obviously this is if op gave us all the information and didn't gloss over anything important.

Story 2: I dont think op is leaving much out, because like shes a teenager. How much could she have reasonable done to upset a grown ass man?
If I had to guess if this is legitimate farmer country and not rich people with a lot of land farmers: OP is a minority or is a woman not acting conservatively. Especially with all that bit about her attitude, she probably wears crop tops or something that dude's pissed that she's tempting him.

Story 2: Everyone is assuming that OP is leaving details out, but you can't really assume that. Based on the information given, OP and their family moved to a rural neighborhood and did little more than exist next to farmers who decided to hate their new neighbors because they didn't fit in. Farmers and country folk are more than capable of being petty and vindictive over small slights just like anyone else, and assuming OP left things out because it doesn't make sense to you in unfair. I'm not saying there's no chance she didn't leave something out, but we can't assume she did based on our own values

Also it seems like an awful big thing to take on just because OP was rude. The triggering incident seemed to be not helping capture the cow, which as I said above, is unrealistic on the farmer's part to expect someone who has never been around cows to help get one back to their property. I like cows but I would be very hesitant to approach one that didn't know me.
