- I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF PEOPLE LAUGHING AT ME, IT'S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.
In this Mumbo Jumbo Minecraft video, I chain my hand to my desk to prevent myself from pressing shift with my thumb. After being voted 2nd weirdest Hermit on the Hermitcraft server behind Ethoslab, I have decided to cure my thumb shifting problem. Can 2 hours of playing with my hands tied up change a lifetime of thumb shifting? Let's find out.

Turns out your index finger is your pointer finger, and your middle finger is... well, just your middle finger.
Also my keyboard is full sized, my hands are just big - I've only had this keyboard for 6 months and I can promise you I have done my weird hand placements on every keyboard I've owned! Mechanical, laptop, fisher price, you name it my thumb is shifting on it.
i can HEAR the clarity in this comment
We still love you
I also press shift with my thumb 🤣

The phrase finger bondage forced me to like this.

That explains why mumbo moves around in that distinctive way always - he's only using one finger to fidget-move.
Yeah. I always wondered why his movements were a little odd, and corrections to his movement took longer than I expected.
I had just dismissed it as him being a little quirky, but hand straining contortions are more than a little quirky.
Does this mean we won't see it anymore
That’s what I said, it was always a little odd the way he moved and it makes so much sense now
this also explains how all his deaths in the secret life series were so bafflingly clumsy...

This makes so much sense actually. This explains why there’s a slight delay between when he shifts side to side when talking to hermits. He literally uses one finger for WASD
Literally had to put my hand on the keyboard to see how I do it, and ya, no wonder it's odd, doing with one finger what I use 3 for.

OMG we finally know why Mumbo's movement in his videos is SO different from anybody else. Who would have thought that way of using WASD would make such iconic movement patterns
Zuko: Got violently Ill after doing one good deed
Mumbo: 3:52
Fun fact, the Nausea is very probably because your brain isn't used to those movements (in the game) coming from those movements (of your hand) It's very similar to the root of Motion sickness.
yeh
That makes a load of sense
This happens to me when doing repetitive tasks. Like having to type out a excel sheet 1, 2 etc instead of dragging it makes me sick
Ahh, I did wonder, but I hadn't considered that. Must be similar to playing inverted controls, then, yeah
Don’t remind me how easy it is get sick from a car headset and how just changing your finger positions could affect it too.
This felt like watching a therapy session. We uncovered layer after layer of hidden past trauma... By causing present trauma by chaining your hands to your desk.
xDDDDD
I really hope that isn't how your therapy sessions went, with the chains and all that.
i mean if we get more mumbo videos....🤔
Technically we did watch physical therapy! I went through physical therapy as a kid, learning to balance, skip, and having a horrible rubber thing on a pencil to force me to hold it correctly 😂
what therapy. shock therapy?
Strangly knowing Mumbo presses WASD with one finger makes sense cause his character moves in a way it just matches him
This is extremely funny but also genuinely probably good for you; you are probably saving yourself years of arthritis from undue joint stresses down the road. Godspeed and keep up the good work o7
The fact that you play with just one finger for all directions is honestly super impressive but also horrifying. The nuance in movements goes out the window.
Especially when you realize, during all his meetings with other hermits, HE NEVER STANDS STILL
No wonder he fell in the lava during secret life.

6:57 ah yes selling Mumbo finger bondage as merch, Call it keyboard masochism.
Hey, Mumbo, fellow thumb shifter here.
I've been trying to get out of thumb shifting for a while, and I'm part of the way there, but sometimes I just go back to thumb shifting. I think the reason for this is that ctrl is uncomfortable for your pinky to press, so you train your thumb to press keys in the shift/ctrl area instead. This ziptie thing has to be one of the best gaming ideas I've ever seen, but my advice is if you really want to change your habits, change sprinting from ctrl to something like caps lock like Gem has it. I have it set to z, which is better than ctrl, but I'm going to change it to caps lock, too.
The pinky is slightly uncomfortable yes, but the THUMB? I tried reaching for shift with my thumb and immediately got a cramp lol
I have small hands, its nearly impossible to thumb shift for me on a full sized keyboard without some really awkward wrist placement...i think my sprint is just double tap w.
Control as Sprint just baffles me. I have played way to many other games where Shift is sprint and Control is crouch for me to switch now. Every time I launch a new modpack, I have to run to the options to put it that way, the way God Intended!
@@robertellis6853same here, shift for sprint just makes more sense! it is a bit uncomfortable to crouch with ctrl but i sprint more anyways, and when i need to do a lot of crouching i turn it to be a toggle
I always put sprint on the front side button of my mouse (since it has those), so now I'm too used to shift being crouch that i have to change it in other games

He's used to associating using his pointer finger to move so when doing it doesn't make him move, or when doing it with the other finger, it triggers motion sickness. This is basically the same thing as when playing vr for the first time, most people get motion sick. I have never seen this happen with a 2d screen with someone who plays so much Minecraft. This is fascinating to me.
Agreed, it’s quite odd tbh.
Oh, many non gamers get motion sick from playing on flat screens, it's a very documented phenomenon, and FOV and screen/HUD shaking options are often explicitly there to battle motion sickness
It definitely helps that this guy has played minecraft A LOT.
Maybe mumbo revolutionised both slime farming and causes of motion sickness?!
@@andrewmirror4611Yeah, that happens a lot. What IS weird thou, and what he probably meant, is that he never got motion sickness... and THEN started doing so because he changed how he clicks the keys. Getting sick because of an underliying association in the brain between the fingers movements and the expected screen movement as a result. If everytime you tried to walk (in game or in real life) forward, you moved to the left... yeah, that's where the motion sickness seems to be comming from.

Now that I think about it, has Mumbo ever walked diagonally, it would require pressing 2 directional keys at once. I can't even imagine playing like this. I kind of want to try it out as a sort of challenge, beating Minecraft with Mumbo style. Which would include thumb shifting of course.
Is that weird??? I can do pretty easily

One issue I don't think I've fixed yet is my typing, though. It feels clunky and like I'm doing something wrong, but I cannot figure out what. I guess I'll keep on making typos. _-o-_

This led to a severe joint injury. The pianist could never play the same as before. So, maybe dont make this cable thing a habit?
Right, but that cable was so the pianist had to strain the joint more to move. Mumbo’s safety-cord things aren’t straining his finger, they’re just preventing them from moving to a different key

He said in the pinned comment that's it's a full sized keyboard, he just has big hands.
Having big fingers over a comparatively smaller keyboard. Hmm. He probably also faced the issue Ren had with fingers too close to use on WASD, but he just used 1 finger where Ren keybinded it differently.
I have average hand size (like 20cm) and microsoft ergonomic keyboards do the trick for me, sadly there's no mechanical variant and newer ones suck
a larger keyboard would have to be entirely custom built because his hands are. Large.
Could definitely get or make a larger membrane board too
The fact that Mumbo got withdrawal symptoms from not pressing shift with his thumb really shows he was addicted
Not withdrawal: having to consciously keep on top of your mechanical behaviors constantly is a great deal of additional load on your brain. Walking (for example) is natural and automatic for a lot of people, but if you had a stroke and had to learn again, keeping up the focus to move your body in the right ways drains you a ton even if your muscles haven't atrophied very much at all
Bro xD
It's muscle memory. When I had switched from a bicycle with a foot-brake (pedal backwards to brake) to one with a hand brake, but then had to use my old bike for a photoshoot, I kept finding myself reaching for a lever that wasn't there whenever I wanted to stop. Luckily I was riding slow enough that I never needed to stop quickly. Was I "addicted" to using the newer bike's hand brake? No.

Omg I love you mumbo! Thank you!
The design is very human
Mumbo is rapidly moving up the play style weirdness scale for putting his individual fingers on leashes to correct his abhorrent behavior
yknow, now that i've SEEN how it actually looks, im not so against it
now i know that:
a) your hand is MASSIVE (thank grian for that one)
b) you actually relax your whole hand and only use the index for moving (actually makes sense now that i think about it)
c) your hand slightly comes from the side, its not such a sharp, 'thumb u-turn'
d) your keyboard is compact, its a laptop keyboard. this make SOOOOOOOOO much sense
make no mistake, you're still one of the weirdest
I don’t think it’s a laptop keyboard. Looks like the Mac Studio keyboard, which is similar to a MacBook keyboard I guess
yeah I think the main thing is actually the index finger doing all the movement, I have really big hands and i was trying to figure out how he could confortably press wasd with his 3 fingers (especially ring finger) and it felt off but as soon as i swapped to just index and sometimes index and middle finger it felt way more natural
As soon as I saw the keyboard size, reasonable. Then when he reveals how he uses WASD.... that is WEIRD.
It reminds me of braces, braces for your hands
Getting a larger keyboard would actually just fix all of his problems wouldn’t it
The way I play is W and S are controlled by my middle finger and A by my ring and D by my pointer and then I press Shift with my pinky and jump using my thumb. It's so cool to see your process behind things because I always wondered what was the unique thing you did for your movements!
Mumbo love you man just play how you want cuz i also got motion sick watching you struggle hahah. But fr this is funny af
Good job mate! Now to watch the other hermits cure their issues...
imagine how much you need to fix etho
Gotta get Etho an entirely new setup lol
FIX THE BOX ETHO-
ARE YOU SERIOUS THE UUTP IS HERE TOO??????
@@EthaDaDaemonNO THAT BOX HAS MORE HISTORY WITH ETHO THAN SOME HERMITS DO WITH THE SERVER
This thumb shifting problem is becoming an entire character arc at this point.
And I'm here for it.
Watching this made me think of my entire history on how i used the keyboard starting from Y8 games 😐
And how i came to the standard way of playing.
To make it easier to prevent your one finger from doing all the movement, you may want a keyboard with more key travel to make you finger stuck if you slide between directions.
this intrigued me to analyze my own way of playing since I have a bit of a different set up then most and here are my findings:
(Key note I play using a track pad)
• I left click with x
• I right click with u
• apparently I am also a thumb shift user
• I sprint (cntrl) with my thumb too
• my f5 button is delete
There is no way Mumbo “biked across Europe” jumbo is calling himself unfit
People did this with factories back in the day. In order to prevent workers from crushing their hands in machinery they would have ropes attached to the wrists and pull back their hands when the machine activates. They are called “press pullback” if you want to look it up. We found out that all you need to do is require the operator to punch two buttons with both hands to prevent them crushing their hands rather than physically pulling back the hands.
That's what I call a monkey brain approach to problem solving.
Lol, this is actually still a thing. They're used in sheet metal manufacturing when the operator has to hold a piece at the same time they operate the press. I also work in the powdered metal industry and all the operators have figured out how to press both buttons with one arm (hand and elbow)
Yup still in use for when you are working around punch presses that have pinch points. Trust me after watching a de-gloving video or two you don’t forget the straps lol. I used to work in a metal forming and parts fabrication factory and as annoying as those straps are they keep your digits intact. It’s really easy to become complacent when doing monotonous tasks around heavy machinery.
Still a thing for example in Brandon's video on the words of radiance leatherbound
I work in a factory, and a good amount of the manual machines that use any hydraulics require two buttons to activate. The exception being anything old. Every old machine there could well be a Deathtrap.
mumbo's laugh is actually really cute 😭🫶
oh. my. god. i’m not really into games in general, but i recently joined a minecraft server.. and. EVERY person there was so surprised i clicked shift with my thumb… i think about a lot, now i switch between a pinkie and a thumb, but it never worried me before, i used to play piano and still do sometimes, you have to be pretty flexible in your hand joints, so i was never bothered anyway :)
He realised how weird it was after the ordering of the weirdest hermit
I don't think you actually need to force yourself to change your habits, but I have to admit, this was one of the most hilarious videos I've seen in a long time. So much laughter...
it would make minecraft so much easier for him in the long run though
@@__AbAbeits not even that, with the way he did, especially his thumb, he could get tendinites or carpal tunnel, it was a health risk!
It will help, just that there would be a quirk manifesting. Just like when I was forced to write with the thumb and the index finger rather than the entire fist, my ring finger started doing ... things.
I’ve been playing like this for years too, awesome video to make out of this haha. 💪
You got my respect with playing with that keyboard.
I initially got one for normal devops work but ditched it for a keycron 😂
Mumbo. Listening to you giggle hysterically for ten minutes while watching your fingers move while tied to safety cables was the BEST possible way to spend my afternoon
2:23 that have to be one of the cutest noise I have heard from a grown up man (like a squeaky toy) surrounded by genuine laughter.
I loved that laugh so much! He laughs like me!
XDD he just makes so many odd noises
for real, ive never heard him laugh that hard before!! made me smile :3
Lol it's actually like a squeaky toy. I didn't notice it the first time round 😂
Right? Like that DOLPHIN SQUEAK
Now I have to watch all mumbo videos with full focus, just not to miss any updates on his progress
Inspiring story... thank you for sharing your journey 🙏 Remember to go to rehab/therapy everyone, there is hope for the weirdest of us
I always controlled wasd with 3 fingers, pointer middle and ring. Kudos to Mumbo for managing to play with only 1, but certainly explains why his movements were rarely at angles
Well, I press W and S with my middle finger, D with my pointer/index finger, and A with my ring finger, so there's that. I got it from when I used to play a game called Tanki Online, and I would move the tank using the arrow keys with the same 3-finger deal with my right hand, which made it very easy to turn and go forward/backward at the same time, and with my left hand I would have my pinkie on Z to turn the turret left, my ring finger on X to turn the turret right, my middle finger on C to bring the turret to center, and my pointer/index finger on the spacebar to fire the gun, not even touching the mouse, and you didn't have to aim the gun up or down, it just kinda fired up or down within a certain window automatically. When I started playing other games, I did the same 3-finger control with my left hand on WASD. It's a bit weird, but at least I have a reasonable and understandable explanation for where it came from, unlike Mumbo.
Yes, that is how most people play video games
@@andreinaf Oh, when Mumbo was going on about using his pointer finger I got confused and thought he meant that most people push WASD with only their middle finger.
@@sambrown6426nope normal people use 3 of their fingers on WASD

We’re all proud of you Mumbo.
I don't think I've ever heard of anyone committing either of these keyboard sins, and I have a friend who only types with their index fingers. What works works ig -w-'
Props to you tho, fixing it. That's genuinely impressive to manage in only a couple hours, assistive device or no. I grew up touch typing (ie homerow), and using the keyboard pretty much how one would expect for gaming, so I've never really had to train myself out of a habit like that >w
2:42 Ah yes, I too remember learning to play the piano by having my fingers forcibly held in place by cables capable of withstanding a hundred kilos!
