  • I talk about dust control in my shop and test the spritzing method of just light spraying the CBN Wheel with water. I will add links below to Items related to this video you may find helpful.
This is an Amazon seller who has informed me that his wheels do work fine in water with no need for any solutions currently many of my normal places are sold out. He has both rounded or hard corners and a variety of grits and a few good reviews. I have not tried him out, but I am considering his 400 grit wheel.

Since I am a nice guy I will list this shop I have purchased from him before My front vertical mount came from him. He's located overseas, but he does ship fast. Clearly knows what he's talking about when it comes to sharpening and even though he disagrees with me on the quality of CBN wheels from Woodturners Wonders. I don't think you would be disappointed in anything you would purchase from his shop. He also has many other cool sharpening items for sale.

This is the store from Australia he has lots of great info and products but he did sadly pass away this past winter. I think the store is still selling, but I did try to by a front vertical base here and they gave my money back so not sure what's the exact status of the shop.

I have had a T 8 for several years now and have used it very little. I just couldn't get the angle set correctly and the knives were rarely sharp as I would have liked! Since watching your videos and seeing there are better sharpening wheels now and I don't have to fool with the water trough I have renewed interest in it! I ordered two CBN wheels and the slick stick to start 600 grit and the 1200 grit and am watching your videos to educate myself I wish there was a school for sharpening near bye . I do like having a sharp EDC! Thanks for your videos!

I belong to the Guild of Professional Sharpeners Matt has a lot of great training in the guild also there are many great videos for Tormek but the 600 grit CBN is the bomb you will love it. I usually find that if you are using a Tormek and not getting the results you expect it's probably because of improper honing and not improper sharpening. Make sure you spend a decent amount of time honing. If your still having problems once you get your wheels reach out to me and we can do a video call and ill see if I can help you.

Hey Paul, regarding the 600 grit hitting the water trough, from the camera view I can see about a 1/4" between the side of the 1000 grit wheel and the TORMEK housing. When you put the 600 grit on, the gap closes to about 1/8" or less. I just bought the same two wheels from WoodTurners after speaking to you on the phone. I'll have to see if I have the same fit problem on my 600. Just got the CBN wheels today, only used them dry. They cut like crazy compared to the TORMEK stone wheels...takes some getting used to the way the CBN cuts. Thanks again for the advice on the wheels and making the video.

I never use mine in water I just did it to see if I liked it but isn’t it awesome how they cut fast you will definitely get use to it and soon you won’t have tolerance for slow cutting wheels. I am seriously considering getting a second Tormek custom machine so I can run two at the same time especially for when I do use my diamond wheels as I almost always use two wheels and also to do some testing with my Japanese Stone that’s getting lonely from not being used. I want to try mixing it in like PG does in his videos to see if it gives me any even better results many people like it as there hone and don’t even bother with the leather at all.

Thanks for the video, man. I love your vac system but it's not really an option in my setup, where my "blade lab" also serves as my home office and gym. I run two CBN wheels on my machine, with one in the standard trough. For a while I was using a sponge to wet the second wheel, which worked okay, but I ended up getting a second trough and now I use it with a spacer to lift it up high enough to run the 2nd wheel in water. Works for me.
I also have a Ken Onion but 99% of the time I'm using it with leather belts, so almost no dust there. If I'm grinding metal I wear a mask.
I also have a 1/2 speed grinder, but again, I just run that with paper wheels so almost no dust.
If I had a dedicated shop for sharpening I would likely dry grind and set up a vac system.

My Ken Onion is also mostly used for stropping but I have had times it’s been the best sharpener for certain jobs I recently sharpened a food processor blade and have also used it for Alaskan ulu knives and a set of mezzaluna knives anything with difficulty curves I find the KO to be an option.

Love all your videos I have the tormek diamond wheels and I feel like when you run them in the bath of water you do have the potential of more spillage especially when you're doing long nights but it seems like all the debris ends up in the water instead of clogged in the wheel if you're spritzing the CBN wheel well you're going to have to dry it when you're done anyway so why not just run it in a full bath and then you don't probably have to use that slick stick and scrub it with PB blast and all that but I could be wrong I have yet to get one they're backordered so much because of all the popular exposure eventually I'll probably get the 200 grit and experiment

It’s just easier for me to not deal with water since my shop is full time sharpening it’s always a shop vac at the end of the day - my shops not insulated so it also gets cold so in the winter I prefer dry - I run water sometimes but more in the spring and summer

I’ve been using some of kens wheels for a while now with water spritzing. No prob. Going to use some pub blaster for some deposits though.

I have scrubbed mine in the utility sink as well to clean them if they where really loaded up. That has also worked well for me I just make sure i dry them throughly when done and treat with wonder slick lube.

Like what you're doing. What honing wheel do you like for the t8?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I currently hone on the leather wheel and sometimes I even use a Ken Onion Elite Sharpener with a leather belt with Tormek Paste on it. I am considering buying the synthetic one to have as a backup for when I wear out my leather wheel and I am also building a variable speed 1x30 that I will be able to use leather belts on as well but will definitely try the synthetic Tormek wheel at some point from what others have told me it’s just as good as the leather with no mess. I do like tormek paste for mirroring up knives it’s good for mot than just burr removal.
