Living in Ramsgate makes one rather blind to the beauty one see's everyday without a second glance. But something like this helps reaffirm my appreciation towards my home, thank you!
🙏 Thanks Johannes. I think we can all be guilty of that. Ramsgate is beautiful, sure it's not perfect, but where is? Enjoy where you live and take in the captivating history.
Well hello. Fellow Ramsgatolian here. Sad to not hear about Queen Victoria's summer residency in Ramsgate. But everything else you shot and described was 5 star.
Hi, Thanks so much, I need to revisit Ramsgate again, later in the season. I know there was a fair bit I didn't cover, it was difficult to squeeze everything into one day. I bet, as the summer season hots up, it's getting a little crazy. As soon as they turn on the sun, we're going to have six weeks of madness 😎 Anyway, thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Thank you again for showing Sundowner, the boat owned by Charles Lightoller, 2nd officer on the Titanic, he had it berthed on the Thames, he and his son went over to Dunkirk to pick up the soldiers off the beaches, one of the Little Ships, he had an amazing life, he was the most senior of Titanics officers to survive, he was shipwrecked twice more and was a gold prospector in the Klondyke, another of my heroes, and such a wonderful little ship
Linda, we love stories, and they are all around. As you spotted in Ramsgate, just one little fragment of its history unfolds into a series of stories about an extraordinary gentleman. Glad you liked the video Thanks, Gary & Janis
Dear Gary and Janis, Lightoller wrote a book entitled " Titanic and Other Ships ", I have not read it or own one, out of print, however, I have adored and been interested in Titanic since I was 12, am a researcher and have named a couple of the bodies including the unknown child, who lived in Fulham, where I live
Linda, I (Gary) too love the story of the Titanic. The romance and dreams of the Ship, the tale of Edwardian standards and arrogance (the privileged vs the poor), the catastrophic failures, both in design & the events of that dreadful evening in April; Once again, so many stories. And referring to ancestry, I have a link to your area. My great, great, great Grandfather was a Chelsea Pensioner from 1853 until his death in 1866, and he was laid to rest in Brompton Cemetary, I believe in the Chelsea Pensioner plot. It's a strange old world, Gary & Janis
I grew up in Ramsgate and you have reminded me how lovely it is. My dad was home on leave from his Naval service on HMS Calcutta when the 'Little Ships' happened. I remember him telling me how he helped 'comission' the boats in the harbour, and how he was involved in the Dunkirk rescue. There was always a tear for those who didn't make it home. Some of the lifeboat men had guided the tugs leading the convoy, through the dangerous sandbanks, tethered together.
That's lovely Julie. I guess there are parts of Ramsgate that have not changed much, and other areas perhaps a little more. It's still a very special place. A fascinating story of the Dunkirk rescue. I always think of how it must have affected people like your father after the war. I hope he was on HMS Calcutta after that. I read she didn't survive the war. Anyway, thanks so much for your comment, stay safe, stay well - Gary
@@OurWorldForYou Yes my dad went back to HMS Calcutta after his leave. Throughout his life he was very much a presance around the harbour, recognisable by his trilby hat. Close neighbours across the road were lifeboat crew, ran a trawler and had lobster pots. At 6 I knew how to make a lobster pot, take a cooked crab to pieces and collect shellfish from the rocks! I remember the flares that went up when crew were being called to emergencies and also a siren that could have been lifeboat or the fire brigade crews being called. One night there was a call for my dad, who could drive the cranes, to help unload VW cars because the ship carrying them had hit the Quay in bad weather and was letting in water. I'm spending a week in Ramsgate soon, having moved away more than thirty years ago. I'm really excited about it and have lots of catching up, in such a lovely town planned. Its been amazing finding so much history and fabulous reviews on line.
Julie, that will be so nice to go back. There's a little bit of me that's sad the model village has gone, but I guess times change. I do wonder when men stop wearing hats? I watch archive footage, and if you see a man without a hat, he's the odd one out, and now - when did that change? Here's hoping you have a wonderful time when you return, and it brings back fond memories again.
🙏 Thanks so much Rhoda, glad you liked it 0 I do wonder at times if I waffle on a bit, but I do love a bit of history 😍 Thanks again, take care, stay safe 👍
Hi , thank you for the video , I remember going to Ramsgate for my holidays between 1967 -1974 with my mum , uncle and older brother , I remember going to Pegwell Bay ,
🙏 Thanks so much James. I am really glad you like the video, and it brought back many fond memories. You'll also remember the Viking ship at Pegwell bay. The hovercraft departed from there for the cross-channel service too. That will feature in an up and coming video of a Kent Coast Road Trip we have planned. Thanks for your comment, take care, stay safe 😍
@@OurWorldForYou do you remember the names of the hovercrafts , my brother and I used to guess the name of the hovercraft before it got to Pegwell Bay , and I remember the big ships coming into the harbour to unload Volkswagen's , and the cafe at the end of the pier
James, sadly I can't remember the names ( I did look them up, so I guess that's cheating), I can't remember the cafe, but I do remember the model village - sadly, no longer there. Still there's plenty about Ramsgate that has not changed that much over the years
@@OurWorldForYou we used to stay in a big white hotel on the front called the Marine , I can also remember going to Dumpton Market , I remember the model village
James, that's pushing my grey cells just a little too much. Ramsgate for us was a day trip from our home on the Kent borders. We moved a little closer in later years, so it's not too far for us, easily a nice day out.
How great - did you recognise some of the areas in the clips? I think it's a beautiful little place. Were you local? or was it your family holiday? I remember Ramsgate as a child, and it's such a shame the model village has disappeared, still times change I s'pose. Thanks for the comment, and take care. 😀
Our World For You recognised all the clips, although I came from the midlands I know it like the back of my hand. I visited the model village many times. Do you remember the underground toilets and showers by the memorial. Happy days
I vaguely remember the underground toilets, not sure about the showers though. Being brought up on the London/Kent borders, a trip to the seaside was more of a day trip, and we'd alternate along a number of those coastal towns. It was sad to see the rough times, and it was good to see the recovery, fingers crossed it keeps going in the right direction. I have to sadly say we haven't explored the Midlands much, except touched on Stratford-upon-Avon, which I guess is the southern Midlands. Although 20 years ago we took on the 5 country ring on a canal boat. Thanks again for commenting, take care and stay safe.
Pegwell Bay is also a beautiful Nature Santuary and let's not forget the Viking Ship. Commemorating the first landing and the beginning of the viking trail up the coast of England
Hi, I'm (Gary) also old enough to remember the hovercraft leaving Pegwell bay 🫢 Not sure we've been through the nature reserve - one to add to the must see list. Thanks again for the comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Loved it can’t wait for the wonderful walks from Broadstairs in one direction and Pegwell Bay in the other. How did you get such fantastic quiet views, no cars?
Well it was December, so nice & quiet - and you need to pick your timing. I think we'll need to feature the walks in a later series of videos because there are some lovey ones along the Kent coast.

😂 Things may have changed a bit since the early '90's - Actually maybe not that much in Ramsgate, like a few places it's wrapped up in it's own little bubble.
I live in the "Harbour Ward" of Ramsgate, my working life was always around Heathrow, I feel now I have come home to rest (although I'm a Devon boy). Did you know that Van Gough considered the light in Thanet to be the best anywhere for an artist?
Hi, we heard that Van Gough was smitten with the light in Ramsgate, it was the same with Turner & Margate - there must be something special about the Isle of Thanet. You're lucky to call it home, but I bet it can get a bit tiresome in the height of the summer season.

im a painter and decorator I wood like to move to ramsgate is there much work
Hi Clifford, I don't live in Ramsgate, so not an expert, but I think there should be. It seems along that coastline there's a lot of redevelopment
I'm going there for a week
Cool 🤞 for plenty of sun 🌞. Are you just staying there, or are you planning to explore a bit more?
