Visiting the British Normandy Memorial
A look at the British Normandy Memorial at Vers-sur-Mer, with the additional 'Standing with Giants' installation - 'For their tomorrow.'
From our base in Beyeux, as part of our 2024 Normandy road trip, we start by pulling into the British Normandy Memorial. We then take a walk along the path to the memorial, passing the story of the D-Day Landings and the battle to free Normandy.
After a walk around the British Normandy Memorial, we head to the 'For Their Tomorrow' installation, walking between the 1,475 silhouettes representing those who died on D-Day as we overlooked Gold Beach.
Returning to the top, we passed the waymarkers for Utah, Omaha, Juno, and Sword beaches before wrapping up our visit.

    Thanks for this. Can you swim in the sea? Is it safe to swim, with the nuclear plant nearby?

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Sofia, The issue is not the nuclear power plant. The main reason not to swim here is the strong currents from its shape and position in the English Channel. If you want to swim close by, Littlestone is on one side, and Camber is on the other. You can check the water quality at UK government's environmental agency site 🔗environment.data.gov.uk/bwq/profiles/ for the water quality and whether it is safe to swim. I hope that helps, All the best, Gary & Janis

You don't like the sound of my voice, but the back sounds are okay The content of the narration could be better Just prefer to look at the video without any audio I'd be interested. I always thought it might be nice on TH-cam to have the narration on a separate channel so you could mute that, but I guess that's a little niche. Anyway, assume you won't subscribe to the channel because all new content comes with narration. However, I'm not offended because I know my style is not for everyone. All the best, Gary (& Janis)

      Hi John, Firstly, so sorry to hear about your little brother - another side to the horrors of war, the innocents. Erith seemed like an odd choice being on the banks of the Thames, officially still in Kent then, but so close to London. My late father used to tell of his childhood getting chased off bomb sites, and once got a whipping after he was caught at the site of the wreckage of a V1 trying to salvage a little bit of memorabilia. That would have been in Welling, not too far from Erith. We just got back from the British Normandy Memorial, overlooking Gold Beach, with Juno to our east, the Canadian beach. Sounds like you'd has a life. I (Gary) was born in '67, and you were just settling down. We've been to Hong Kong ('97), San Francisco ('02 & '06) and Montreal ('10) but Japan is still on the wish list, and never been to Western Canada, still there's plenty of time. You are lucky to have seen so much and experienced so much; I'm struggling to understand what life in Japan for seven years would have been like in the late '60's. I think we're all a little spoilt these days. Anyway, lovely to hear from you, All the best, Gary & Janis

      @OurWorldForYou 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Ian, Thanks so very much. I think I prefer the French version of "Cinque Port", it makes more sense, "Five Ports", rather than the Anglicised version, but in future I'll refer to English pronunciation. I do love our Anglo-French History and recently came back from Dives-sur-Mer, where William the Conqueror left for England on that fateful day in 1066; it is a fascinating place, in fact, the whole of Normandy, and our intertwined history. There will be more of that on the channel soon. All the best, Gary & Janis

      @@OurWorldForYouyes it is interest history and I agree about the French origin of Cinque but not how it’s pronounced locally. Did you know that some of Norman Armada tried to land at Romney (there was no Old and New Romney at the time) but were beaten back. There were later repercussions after the main landing and battle of Hastings. Which is also partly why the church in NR is so big. I think one of William’s relatives took an interest (Bishop Odo?). The church was originally one of five. Also badly flooded in 1287? during storm. This is why the steps to church lead down due to build of sediment/shingle around church. Can still see the flood level on the pillars in the church.

One by-product of that is the heritage Spitfires that do tours over the southeast, which still pass over RAF West Malling and RAF Detling Hill, which means I get a free air show most days of the summer. Sadly Rye is typical of most Historic English Market towns , "all fur coat and no knickers". No doubt it's a great place for a day trip but it's not a great place to live unless you're a wealty middle class ex London type looking for that "Quaint second home in the country". There is little to no genuine community spirit left , zero housing for people who earn even a modest wage because the great and the good who could afford to retire of move there and have the spare time to get on the local government bodies will fight tooth and nail against any development which would benefit those on low to average wages. Housing is unaffordable for local people and many of those shops in the film are just fronts for websites. You can't buy anything from them , they are in akin to film sets. Take a walk down Watchbell street on a cold January evening and there's barely a light on and it's not due to any power cuts ,it's because many are second homes. I've lived in and around Rye for 55+yrs and Rye in 2024 is just a facade.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Adrian, Firstly, thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment - The "all fur coat and no knickers" made me smile on a Sunday morning. It's a shame, but I know you're right, the flip side is where I live in a village of 750 homes, surrounded on all sides by green space, has approval for 950 new homes, with possibly a few more hundred later along the line (I don't suspect too much will be affordable though!) Maybe the new government's approach of overruling NIMBYs may help, but developers rarely build homes for the modest/affordable - less profit. I really like Rye in the winter; a lot fewer tourists, and next time I'm back, I'll take a look at the shops - from the outside, it is a breath of fresh air that doesn't look like every high street, but is it all a facade? Let's hope we see change in 2024 and beyond, and that the locals, the real locals, are represented. All the best, Gary & Janis

    • @AdrianSams
      @AdrianSams หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OurWorldForYou Hi Gary & Janis, I'm glad I made you smile. It's good to smile and takes less effort than frowning apparently. I totally agree with you regarding genuineky "affordable housing" doesn't make enough profit for the developers apparently. So many agree to include affordable/Social housing but conveniently are allowed to not include them when they actually begin building which is totally wrong. Bung the council a few £'s and they are allowed to remove them. If we go back to the 1980's there was plenty of self build's being built but even that is now for the wealthy only. Regarding the shops, I guess like most High Streets in the UK we have an over supply of coffee shops and Charity shops. Many of the Hotels are owned by very few people which is never a good idea because it stifles competition. There are still some good pubs and the Water Works on the Corner of Rope Walk and Tower street is very popular. It used to be the old Public toliets and even a soup kitchen back in the 1800's. There is no doubt that Rye has some great history but it really isn't a thriving town full of life. The biggest issue is countrywide which is the total loss of Community spirit. I remember Bonfire Night was a huge event and in the 1960's had a Fire breathing dragon, imagine that moving along Rye High Street with all the timber framed houses. Carnival day was a massive community event with long processions of fancy dress,bands, floats etc and the vast majority of the community took part. We like many towns and villages had May Day celebrations, Pudding races, "Hot Pennies" where the Towen Mayor would throw out hot pennies from the Town hall for kids to pick up and compete for. Today there is little left. My personal view is the Politicians don't actually like our culture,history and traditions. Look no further than today where England will be playing Spain in the final and barely a St Georges flag to be seen anywhere apart from the pubs. I'm gald you like Rye and hope you do come back.. All the best and thanks again for replying. 🙂

      Hi Adrian, I always try to reply, although there may be a few days of radio silence as we head off to Normandy next week. It's strange, our little village does have a touch of community spirit, but the expansion will damage that, I guess we need to 'make hay while the sun shines.' Maybe we can hope, with the right community champions, we have a brighter future. All the best, Gary & Janis
