Switched from an Android ecosystem to Apple this year (iPhone SE 3, iPad 9 with Pencil, Watch Series 3, and Airpods 2nd gen, so nothing cutting edge yet). Ended up adding the Apple TV 4K 3rd gen 128 last week because of Roku doing forced arbitration along with the ads and honestly I spend more time in Retroarch than I do watching TV on it. The CPU is plenty powerful enough to handle N64 emulation, the 128 gigs storage can handle practically everything from the cart era of gaming before CDs became the norm, and after doing some homework I generated playlists and added artwork to all my games as well, with around 60 gig left over for TV apps and downloads, along with a few games from the app store. Retroarch is a killer app for this thing!
Yeah. The AppleTV is one of the most underrated pieces of tech out there. Hands down the best streaming experience. And now with emulation…. (Chef’s kiss 😚)
did you try to run the NGC or PS2 games on the apple tv? I have tried the PSP, that was so awesome experience play with the PS controller, much better than any other iOS games
Can anyone help? When I use the webpage that it tells you to ( I.e go to 192.161.171 etc) when I click retroarch folder or even “upload files” all my ROMs come up with “error “ in a red bar?! Yet they work on my iPad? Does anyone know why this is?
Thank you for the vid, Im having an issue, i search for the ip address or the local link it gives but its not loading the UI to upload the ROMS. I tried on several browsers (google, safari, edge, firefox). Not sure if this error message that pops up when RA is opened is important “mfi disconnected from port 1”. Pls help ⚠️
My understanding is that RetroArch allows users to play/access games from a personal server if you direct it towards one locally which should mitigate any issue of losing save files (since this would mean save data would be sent to your server instead of your local Apple TV). I’m attempting this now so hopefully this works out.
I've tested it on two different Apple TVs, the newest model and an older model, and they both work great. Save states are there. Directories have stayed loaded. Configuration files are there too.
I hoped this was a “ill set you up tutorial AtoZ” nope this vid was good enough to get me exited but way to useless to really help the not so digital savvy people 😪
I believe you go to Main Menu > Information > Network Information > Interface (en01) 192. 16x. xxx. xxx. I can't remember if that's exactly right, but it's close. I'd have to check when I get home from work. Thanks for watching.
It's odd how I import a folder into the website and it just uploads separate files so now I have to figure out what goes where. Edit: I just relized it put all of my files into the download folder....so I guess I can just point it to that folder instead of a ROMs folder. Edit AGAIN: I just realized you can create folders and find them it's just clunky. Now I am putting them in proper folders. It's just a little annoying.
It's great to download the shaders straight from the core updater, I use one called "crt-caligari" found in the CRT folder, it's perfect but only when integer scaling is selected.
Somehow, all games play slower on this for me, like they have a very small slowdown (most noticeable in music), both on Snes and Psp titles. Any suggestions?
It works super well, but unfortunately it won’t last. Apple allows only 500 kb of persistent storage per app on Apple TV. This means all settings, roms, saves, etc get wiped after a few days, randomly. It also gets wiped when a new update gets pushed to the Apple TV. Until Apple changes this, RetroArch is basically unplayable for longterm use. 🤦🏻♂️😩
My understanding of this is that anything over 500 kb goes into a purgeable storage that is only deleted if your Apple TV starts to run low on storage. I have the 128gb model and haven't had anything purged yet, but I'll be keeping my eye out for this.
Has anyone had issues playing N64 games? I use a PS5 Dualsense controller and when using the left analog stick, sometimes it acts as if the dpad is pressed when I don't touch it. Makes most N64 games unplayable. I see people discuss this on Reddit.
I have a Nintendo Switch controller (enhanced - not the pro). I went through the steps up until connecting/pairing the controller with my Apple TV via Bluetooth (which states that it is “connected”) but when I press the “B” button on the controller (or any other button on the entire controller), it does nothing - it doesn’t leave the screen on the tv (as yours did when you pressed the “B” button) and doesn’t allow me to go out of the Bluetooth screen at all (I have to go back to the Apple TV remote). The controller lights are still flashing so it’s still connected, but still can’t use the controller - even when I go to my games in RetroArch. Do I need to be registering or pairing or connecting my controller through another device/app before pairing through the Apple TV?
If the controller lights are still flashing, then it's not really connected. I would go back to bluetooth settings and "forget" that bluetooth device. Then reset that controller and try pairing it again. If that doesn't work, then whatever controller you're using must not be compatible for some reason. The official Nintendo Switch Pro controller does work, and I believe the JoyCon do as well, though I can't remember for sure. If you're using a third party Switch controller it may not work. I'm not sure about those.
You should. Although DOS games take a little setup to run as they should (setting up joystick/gamepad instead of keyboard) . It should also support Atari / Amiga versions of the games, IDK if setup there is easier.
whenever i scan the directory for all my games and then go back to the homescreen, the new area where my games should be doesn't show up on the homescreen. any remedy for this?
@@BoKnowsGamingOkay, so I just tried doing the GBA first and the main playlist icon came up but content icons didn’t, and after that I ran PS1 through and the content icons came up but the main icon didn’t. i’m so confused😅
also, sorry for all of the replies but I am also having issued getting boxart for the games. they come up in the history playlist but they aren’t coming up automatically in the playlist i made by scanning the directory for the games.
@@tcraskoutdoors120 No need to apologize! Both of those issues are bizarre. Do you have the latest version of the app? You're the first person I've heard of with these problems. I just lingered on a game title for a few seconds and the art work popped up for me. If your ROM isn't titled correctly the artwork won't show up. For example, if the text read _Super_Mario64_001 or something like that instead of just "Super Mario 64". If can't determine what that is. So check your titles. Upload single consoles at a time. And I wouldn't do more than 10 games at a time either. That's about all the advice I have for what you're experiencing. Hope this helps! 🤞
Anyone else having an issue with gamecube games? For some reason I cant get the emulator/dolphin to show after downloading it like 50 times. If you figured this out, let me know!
It's my understanding that the Dolphin emulator does not work on iOS or tvOS, and may never work because of Apple having something locked down on the OS side. If you figure out a way, let me know, because a video on that would blow up! 😂
FYI, your uploads stopped when you moved out of RetroArch on the apple TV. You have to stay in that app during the upload or it stops the upload.
Oh okay. Gotcha. Thank you! And thanks for watching!

@@BoKnowsGaminghow? Because unless I keep the app in the background and let the tv sleep, I’ll lose my roms.
Did someone try to add 4 controllers? I tried 4 xbox mfi controllers, but i will only detect 3.
The 4 controllers work fine with just the apple tvOS.
I’ve never tried four controllers. I didn’t even know if you could connect 4 to the Apple TV. That’s cool that you can.
Okay where you get the game from ??
You either have to create the ROM from the game cartridges you own or find them online.

There's a list in description of RetroArch on AppStore of what works. So.....Gamecube doesn't.
can it run ps2 games?
Retroarch cannot. Sorry. That doesn’t mean a PS2 emulator won’t eventually come to the App Store for Apple TV though. Fingers crossed 🤞
The reason your PS1 games weren't loading is because the emulator requires a PS1 bios
can you do ps2 on this?
No. It doesn’t support PS2 emulation.
hello bo, do you have a zip file of all of these roms by any chance? i’m setting this up for my dad that had most of these consoles and games
Hello drods, I’m your dad. I don’t own any of these consoles but I do have access to google.
@drods Unfortunately, I cannot share game roms like that for legal reasons. Sorry. But thank you for watching and I hope your dad really enjoys it!
Everytime I try playing any rom on my Apple TV in Retroarch, the game immediately crashes
Did you follow the instructions in the video? What systems are you trying to emulate?
Apple TV deletes all the files for retroarch
....if your storage is almost full, it does. If you leave some Gb's of space , it will not.
