    Original description:
    This is the condensed story of how I found my ULTIMATE couch gaming setup. I wanted to be able to play all of my PC and retro games in the living room, with one controller- just pick up and play where you left off- simple right?
    Well, the reason I made this video in a sort of story-time fashion instead of telling you straight on what setup I ended up with was because I feel strongly that there is a lot of information here that can be useful to a lot of people, and it's much more useful when presented in the context of all the other things I tried in order to create my perfect living room gaming setup.
    If you still feel like you need to skip ahead, the TLDR; starts at about @6:59.
    This video assumes you already have some working knowledge of PC gaming, retro emulation, and game streaming, etc- so if you have any questions please let me know in the comments and I'll try to provide learning resources or make new videos on those topics.
    Below are links to everything you need if you wanted to create the same or similar setup.

      I’m really glad I put in the initial effort to find a setup that’s finally “set it and forget it”! I find myself picking up the controller, swinging down on the couch and scrolling through Steam and picking games that I wouldn’t otherwise play. I’m having so much fun with it that I just had to share!

    Just a heads up, the Xbox Series S and X have some sort of "developer mode" you can enable very easily (made so that people can easily develop their own games and not need a dev kit), and people are already creating full-blown RetroPie setups that you can launch right on your XSX.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Correct! I briefly mentioned that I tried this in the video, admittedly on my Xbox series S, not X, but my problem was it could barely run PS2 games, never mind PS3, Switch or others that my PC could run no problem, so in the end I ultimately went with game steaming. This concept gets me excited though because it means in the future as the power of graphics chipsets keeps creeping up, you’ll be able to emulate more and more consoles on all kinds of systems- whether Xbox, or a cheap mini PC, etc. Very kühl stuff!!

    I had a laptop that crapped out on me after two years. Buying a replacement when the components are tied to an expensive motherboard was a no-go for me. That meant I had to go with a tower again so that a dead motherboard doesn't take everything with it.
    This meant that I had no laptop to use over my friend's place anymore. Using this as a guide with the moonlight app on my phone saved me the trouble of lacking portability, so thanks.

    Hey Dylan! Would this work with higher end games? I just found out the new Star Wars Jedi game coming out in March won't play on my older Xbox series S. (not the newer S) and I have a powerful PC w/ big graphics cards. Wasn't sure if the Apple TV powered these games w/ the link setup or if it's just streaming it. I believe it's the latter. Thanks!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes! The Apple TV is streaming the games that are powered by the PC over the Steam Link app- so if you already have a decent / recent graphics card in your PC you are good to go since the game will be powered by the PC! Just connect the controller to your Apple TV, launch the Steam Link app on your Apple TV, and input the pin on your PC’s Steam program window. Once you’ve done that once you’ll be able to connect any time, open any Steam game such as Star Wars Jedi Survivor, or even non-Steam games and Retro ROMs as I show in this video. Hope this helps!

      @brianmonarchcomedy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dylanmacintosh Thanks man! How do you play non-steam games with the steam link app? Also, really appreciate it. I think you just helped me to never have to buy another console system again!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! There’s a few ways to do it. The most simple way is to open up Steam, click the “+” and select non steam game, and navigate to the executable file for the game. The method that I’ve utilized in this video is to use a separate program called “Steam ROM Manager” in order to add my retro ROMs as non-Steam games in bulk. Adding “non-steam games” gets more difficult if you’re looking to add games that you have purchased through other launchers (other than Steam) because each launcher typically requires their own login, DRM etc. that prevents their shortcuts from being opened directly by steam. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions whatsoever. I’m also releasing a new video soon utilizing a different game-streaming method

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Question! I’m not so sure about the PS3 ones, I took a look at a couple Amazon listings and they seem to mention “PS3” quite specifically even though they are Bluetooth. I would think perhaps it’d be better to search for generic controllers that are advertised to work with android to get the compatibility that you’re looking for. Also, before you buy, check your TV specs to see if you can find how many simultaneous Bluetooth controllers connections your PC supports at once- otherwise you might have to upgrade to a dedicated streaming device like a Google TV or Apple TV that can support multiple simultaneous controller connections. Hope this helps!

    Do I need to run the ethernet cable from my PC to the Apple TV if I already have ethernet in the walls?
    For example, office PC > office wall socket > home switch in network cabinet > living room wall socket > ISP router/switch combo > Apple TV.
    They are all cabled connections running through the walls to these switches, so they should all be on the same network segment right? in this case, no need to use an "external" CAT6 cable or am I missing something?

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! If your PC and Apple TV are connected to the same wired network then it will work whether the wires are in the walls or otherwise. I didn’t have Ethernet wires already in my walls so it was easier for me to run a new wire along the baseboard and over the doors, but if you already have ethernet wiring in your walls then that’s even better!

      One thing I noticed is anything out of big picture, like the desktop or any other game launched as a shortcut from steam is laggy as hell and doesnt play well with controllers. Native steam games are fine. However, I seem to be one of the only ones with this issue, not many results on google search.

      Thanks for reporting back! Im glad native Steam games are working well for you, but non-Steam games can be tricky. I’m not sure about the lag portion of your issue but I’ve definitely experienced the controller issues before. For the controller issue you might want to try setting up your Steam Big Picture “Desktop Controller Configuration” to mimic your game controls, as opposed to the mouse emulation mode of the “actual” Desktop Controller Configuration.

    If you're running an ethertnet all the way to your tv, wouldn't it be easier to just run an hdmi over to the tv? I'm wondering because I'm trying to set up a pc couch gaming setup from my desk set up.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question! The answer really just comes down to your goals for your setup. HDMI cables can generally be as long as 25ft before they become unidirectional, which isn’t a problem but can be a pain to find the right cable for a decent price. So if you’re just going around the corner or through a wall, an extra long HDMI cable might be just fine. To take it to another level though, setting up a game streaming method like the one in this video can take your setup beyond just the extra living room TV- once setup, you can stream to any device in the house, or on the go. So basically it just gives you more options if you’re interested in that. An ethernet cable between your router and your gaming pc will give you the optimal connection to build upon while connecting your client devices for game streaming whether they be wired or wireless. So, you don’t really “have” to wire in your client device, for instance when I stream to my iPhone it is of course wireless, but my Apple TV is right next to my router so wiring it in was no problem. So, you can certainly pick and choose which devices you bother to wire in and if the performance is good enough for you while connected wirelessly, I say go for it, it’s really up to you and your setup / house layout. I hope this helps! And of course thanks for watching 🙏

      Nice! Thanks for watching and I’m glad the Steam Link fits your needs! Of course the Steam Link hardware is way cheaper than an ATV obvi so I wanted to start there- I wouldn’t go out and buy an ATV if the Steam Link works for you- But because I already had an Apple TV I started using the Apple TV with the Xbox controller just to test it out, and once I realized I could also quickly switch from playing games to watching Netflix, seamlessly connecting AirPods, and other assorted niceties that the ATV affords, I knew I landed on my perfect setup. I’m planning on doing a follow-up video, is there anything you’d like to see? Again, thanks for watching!

    Great video! What video resolution does the Steam Link app output at? I currently use the Steam Link box and it can only go up to 1080p, though it runs great with virtually no input lag with my Bluetooth 8BitDo controller. • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, I can add it to my list of video ideas! If the PS4 controller is working on the emulators on your local PC but not over steam link, I would just double check that your steam link device supports DS4 inputs, and maybe take a look at your steam controller settings and see if you have to enable any settings for your PS4 controller compatibility. For 16:9, of course you can stretch the screen of old games to reach 16:9, but you might get funky looking graphics depending on the game. For instance, Mario might look fat, etc… up to your personal preference if you want to stretch to 16:9 or leave the original aspect ratio, but yes it’s completely possible.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly- most TVs are 60hz but if you happen to have one with a higher frame rate like an LG C1 with 120hz refresh rate, you’ll be able to play at whatever that frame rate is. You’ll also have to keep in mind that some retro games will be locked to the fps of whatever the console it was released on, whether it be 30, or 60, etc so a higher frame rate TV is really only useful for those PC games that you’ll be streaming. If you have any more questions feel free to let me know! Thanks for watching 😁

Also the controller settings seem to get a little off, I get too fast up and down movement and adjusting the settings do nothing for it? Once again this is with Warframe, I am able to Login through PC in regular steam mode then connect to Steam Link and play, but this defeats the purpose of your Ultimate Set Up, any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a great question!! Unfortunately there are all kinds of games out there and not all of them conform to Steam Link perfectly, so what I end up doing whenever I get a pop up message or password box etc, I usually end up opening a Remote Desktop app on my phone, selecting the window, typing in passwords, checking boxes, etc before I can get back to the game. I’m still working on this, and have been testing more methods with different features as well to someday have an even MORE ultimate setup. But when it comes down to it, these issues that pop up stem more from the companies involved not being willing to work together to achieve this, rather than not have the technology to do so. Every company wants their own launcher and their own “walled garden” for their own selfish reasons (money, control). So I know this isn’t the answer you were hoping for, but I will download Warframe via Steam and see if I can tell if there’s any thing I can do with the settings for just that game specifically. Thanks for watching!!

I don't move for a month, but I am curious how that latency is, currently I don't have the best internet connection. But I have been using Parsec for the last several months which allows me to remote into the entire PC.

      Hey thanks for watching! Great question, if you’re just streaming from one room to the other inside your house then really you only need to worry about your internal network speed, which if you’re using any decently modern equipment you should be just fine. Past that if you’re looking to actually stream games outside of your house, that’s when your internet speed / latency from your internet company will come into play. But yeah I would definitely recommend trying out game streaming to a device like Apple TV or google TV before splashing the cash on a second gaming PC just for the living room, you might just be surprised at how well it works out! Otherwise if you find game streaming doesn’t work out for you, then building a second gaming PC for the living room can be tons of fun as well. There are tons of options these days which is the best part of living in 2023 🙌

      Great question! For 120hz game streaming, I might recommend my other video on streaming with Moonlight instead of Steam Link. The Moonlight app supports high refresh rate, but you’ll also just need to double check that your device supports that framerate as well- at this point in time the Apple TV 4K does not support 120hz so it does not show as an option in the tvOS Moonlight app, however the iPad Pro and iPhone Pro models support 120hz, so the 120hz option will show up in the Moonlight app on those devices. I hope that makes sense and helps you out!

    Controller works for me for steam games , but not for dolphin via steam rom manager , weird. I can use my controller on my local pc but not in steam link. A solution could be retroarch , but it's less elegant . Do you have any idea about what the problem is ? Maybe Dolphin can't communicate via steam link

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question, when using Steam Link to stream games that are added as “non-Steam games” (which all of the Steam ROM Manager games are) sometimes depending on the emulator Steam will decide that you are actually streaming your “desktop” instead, and will use the controller in Desktop Configuration, which by default has basically nothing mapped that can carry to the game- so one thing you could try is to configure your Steam controller Desktop Configuration to essentially be a game controller, assign the sticks to be sticks, face buttons to be face buttons, etc, so that even when Steam thinks you’re on your “Desktop” it will pass those game controls. Past that, make sure you have ViGEM Bus installed, and finally depending on some emulators you may have to setup the controller while connected over Steam Link rather than the local desktop. This is because a local usb controller will have a different “input” than if you configure a virtual controller. So if you set up the controller locally, then try to stream, the emulator wont see the local controller anymore. So you might have to bring your streaming device like iPhone or iPad near your PC and start streaming the game, then open the Dolphin options and re-configure the controller while streaming, because it will show as an option for that virtual controller while streaming. Once you configure the virtual streaming controller once and save that configuration in the Dolphin options it should remember it, so no this isn’t something you have to do every time you want to use that emulator. I hope these tidbits help, let me know if you have any more trouble and I’ll do my best to help!

    Hey cool video! Im really interesting this idea. So the apple tv plugs into the TV, and you run steamlink on it. The apple TV is also connected to your pc via ethernet. So apple TV talks to steam link, which talks to your computer, to stream the game to the TV. Is that right? sorry I am a dinosaur and just want to make sure I understand. How well do more recent console work this way? assuming the computer is powerful enough to run it normally, could I run ps3/switch games this way? Thank you!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question! And yes- you’ve got the gist! Also yes, if the PC has a powerful enough dedicated graphics card, you could definitely run a lot of PS3 and Switch games. Just keep in mind when it comes to emulation nothing is guaranteed, so I would recommend looking up compatibility lists for RPCS3 and Ryujinx/Yuzu before you buy anything if you’re looking to emulate a certain PS3 or Switch game. If that game is on the list and is marked as playable, then you should be good to go when using a PC with any modern graphics card! Once you have the emulator set up and running well on the PC, the next step would be to try and get streaming going like I have in this video. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I’ve even seen people use their smart speakers with automations so you can just say something like “Alexa, turn on my PC” etc. and it will send the magic packet to wake the PC. Thank you for watching! Exactly my point 🤣 it’s about to be 2023 and if I struggled to find a way to make video game streaming happen for more than just steam games then I’m sure others will find my journey useful at least. I’m planning another video showing another method that works pretty well and has some advantages, but has some drawbacks too. As I get deeper down this rabbit hole, I realize that the reason this is difficult in 2023 isn’t because the technology isn’t there, it’s just a case of brands not wanting to collaborate with each other on a launcher that works for everyone because it won’t help company A make more money- such BS if you ask me 🤣

  • @dziggify
    @dziggify ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, I'm going down the same rabid hole this week, haha. I ended up with : Using my Xbox with Moonlight app, combined with Playnite Fullscreen as the launcher (looks tider, customizable and simpler than steam link IMO. Not to mention it supports EA play , Ubisoft, and others). On the PC I need to install Sunshine since AMD is not natively supported by Moonlight. For me, the image quality and latency is way better than Steam Link.
    I also use reWASD so I can switch configuration on the game pad (I have one as normal xbox layout, one for switch layout, and one for mouse and keyboard layout). There is also controller companion app which is way simpler, have this awesome keyboard typing layout, but unfortunately it binds select + start that moonlight app in xbox needed so no go.

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว

      Woah good stuff!! I downloaded Moonlight but haven’t tried it out yet with this holiday season starting to get busy, but I’ll definitely move it up the list after hearing this- I already have Controller Companion, it was actually a tool that I used while attempting to go through Playnite, but while on Steam it would sometimes get stuck- sounds like it might just be the ticket to try with Moonlight!! Like you say, the biggest issue with Steam + Steam ROM Manager is no Xbox/EA Play support so I’ve definitely gotta try this! The reason it wasn’t a super high priority to get that support the first go around is I already have a Series S and there aren’t many XGP PC games that I would need to play on the couch that aren’t already on the Series S… but to have everything in one place is the dream, so I can even play XGP/EA Play while traveling. And for the rest of the XGP games that are console only, well most of my mobile devices have the Xbox app to stream either from my Xbox Series S at home, or from the xCloud. Thanks for watching and now I’m stoked to try Moonlight- thanks!!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, I just spent some more time with this method this week, and I gotta say, I think the winning formula might be Moonlight + Sunshine, Playnite fullscreen, and reWASD, IF you absolutely have to have everything streaming from one interface- though it’s not for the faint of heart. Obviously if you buy everything through steam, don’t worry about it, but yeah if you have a bunch of retro ROMs and steam games and game pass games that you’re looking to stream, this is the way to go. New video coming soon 🥳

      Great question and thanks for watching! Because I’m streaming from my gaming PC which currently has a 3060 GPU, I’m really only limited as to what emulators have been developed, and how well optimized they are- as you learn more about software emulation you’ll come to understand that it’s not an exact science per-say- you’ll really just have to try systems out for yourself and see what happens.
      That being said I’ve had success with systems as modern as PS2, PS3, Wii U, Switch, etc. Basically everything up to the most current consoles like PS4, PS5 simply because they’re so “new” and the emulators are just being developed now, and Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, simply because Xbox Game Pass along with the Microsoft Store means I can play most of those games that I want to play for little cost on my Xbox Series S anyways.

      Essentially yes- the glory of this setup is that your PC games and retro roms are now accessible anywhere you can stream to, in this case I'm showcasing the Apple TV since it's my all around media box, but it could really be anything- a Raspberry Pi, Shield TV, Google TV, FireTV, Steam Deck, etc., you name it. The downside of this setup is that the games are unfortunately not running on the Apple TV itself- if you were looking to achieve similar levels of local emulation (up to PS3 and beyond) in the living room without streaming you'd essentially be building another PC. Please let me know if you have any questions about this setup or need further clarification on its pros and cons!

      I hear ya! The Steam Deck is a great piece of hardware, but at this moment in technology history it’s unfortunately still a bit difficult to run games in 4K at 120fps. But hopefully someday soon there will be new breakthroughs in hardware that might allow cheaper APUs to run games at 4K/120. On the flip side of that though, it’s really incredible that we are living through a time where the Console experience has gone handheld with the Switch and Steam Deck, and now the ROG Ally, etc. Very kühl stuff is on the horizon!

    • @dylanmacintosh

      Great question! I have not seen a solution like this yet, mainly because of the way our operating systems work with “active windows”, and how games run on them. Especially when it comes to streaming, the game will want to be run in an exclusive fullscreen mode, which will take the mouse and cursor away from your productivity application so that it can be used for the game, and vice versa if you’re trying to work on a productivity app while a game is running. Of course anything is possible, and if you’re willing to install a hypervisor OS on your PC you could split your resources and have a gaming PC running on a VM for streaming, and a productivity PC running on another VM for work. So, anything is possible, it’s just an uncommon use case. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I understand this would be significantly more expensive - but if you’re going to take the time to hard wire your steam link to your pc via ethernet, why not just use an hdmi cable to avoid network drawbacks altogether? Sure, you could certainly wire an HDMI for your setup if that works better for you. It’s just rare to see an HDMI cable that’s longer than about 20ft so if you’re not in the same/adjacent room as your PC that might be difficult. Also, if you make the effort to setup streaming instead, you can play anywhere really, not just the same apartment, but different houses or even countries as well. I also utilize a Chromecast with Google TV which has the Steam Link app available, and allows full UI remote control with a Bluetooth controller such as an Xbox controller. What about Provenance in comparison?

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question, the big difference between Provenance and what we’re doing in this video is that Provenance is running the emulators and games on the device itself, iOS or tvOS, while what we’re doing is streaming the games over from a separate gaming PC. So, with game streaming anything on the gaming PC can be played on any client device. However I would recommend Provenance to folks who maybe don’t have a gaming PC already, or want to run the emulation locally on their iPhone or Apple TV for any reason. Provenance is limited to certain systems though, so just depends on what you want to play. For instance provenance supports PlayStation emulation, but not PS2 or PS3 like we can while game streaming from a gaming PC. So, at the end of the day it really just comes down to what you want to play and how. I hope this helps!

    • @dylanmacintosh
      @dylanmacintosh  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be super kühl. I think you could say they “did” make a mini PC console with the original Steam Link hardware from 2016, but yeah I’m not sure if it supported controller waking or 4 simultaneous connections, and the other side of the argument is any PC can be a “Steam console” if you slap Steam on it, and I think that’s kind of why they got out of the hardware game- that is until they released the Steam Deck, which I would guess if you setup on like a docking station, that would be a pretty dope “Steam console”, that you could also walk away with like a Nintendo Switch- so, we’ve got lots of options and that’s an amazing thing! But to your point it would be really kühl if Valve revitalized the Steam Link hardware with like an Apple TV sized box, but came with a gamepad instead of a remote and loaded the SteamOS just like the steam deck. That could be pretty sweet at the right price/performance ratio!
