Opposition Instructions: The Complete Guide

  • I have been hounded for this video for an incredibly long amount of time and it’s finally here. A complete guide to opposition instructions, from the mysterious tight marking to the beloved hard-tackling, from the tough close down decision to the ubiquitous force onto weak foot command. Tactics in Football Manager have so much focus on where to put players, what FM role should they have. Should it be a high pressing tactic? A counter tactic? All of this stuff can be determined in part by something we almost all ignore. As you probably guessed, that’s these magical opposition instructions.
There are even more advanced ways to use these opposition instructions to set traps on players or direct the balls to certain players in your tactic. I touch on this stuff here but feel free to ask in the comments about that stuff and I’m sure that there will be people there to answer even if I don’t manage to read them all. Tactics and instructions are something I have to research a lot to understand because it’s one of those things that just playing the game doesn’t help you fully understand, so forgive the time it took to get this tactical piece-de-resistance out there!
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

An abstract scenario but hear me out. If you take over at a lower league club and your star player comes to you on day one and asks to leave and you offer them out to clubs and a club 2 divisions above you offers you a fair price and the transfer goes through and at the end of the season his new club gets relegated and your club gets promoted and you end up playing against him then you have to select hard tackling. Just to teach him a lesson.

Great guide, I’ve been getting good results on my Club Brugge save when setting them myself. In previous years I would just leave to the assistant. However I never really thought of the impact of telling players never to do something. I just used never tight mark on PSG’s front three to great effect. 0-0 away and 3-1 at home to me in the UCL!

I usually go for Man Management, so he handles the players better, Judging player potential and current ability so he knows which players to focus on with his instructions and suggestions and tactical knowledge so he actually knows whatahell he's doing when suggesting things for my formation.
But again, it's all speculation, not even SI knows what the attributes mean and most of the times the numbers are completely useless.

@@jrman413 I have actually looked at this in the past in all the knowledge forums. For opposition instructions it is: Judging Player Ability and Potential, Knowledge of the country, tactical knowledge. That was the consensus. Then speculation is that he prefers a similar tactical style to what you are playing. General Assistant Management I like these although can also have a coach do opposition instructions. Motivating for good suggestions on the team match talks and my fav for an Assistant is level of discipline if yours and the assistants are high it will lead to less player complaints.

for players I'm looking to hard tackle due to their weaknesses I like to also tight mark, that way they won't fancy those 50/50s and are often made the culprit for turning over the ball. I tend to only do this on attacking players and sometimes players in the middle of the pitch where they lack aggression, anticipation, and work rate. aside from that I mostly let the assistant dictate the rest

2 questions... If your CB or DM or whoever has the 'Marks Opponents Tightly' thing, is he naturally going to do this in spite of the instruction, or will he just be better at doing it when asked? Also, if you are gegenpressing or just generally doing a lot of pressing via your tactic, do you need to set the closing down to always or will it be happening anyway due to the tactic, and if you tell them not to close someone down, will this just confuse them if the tactic is telling them to close down? Does the tactic take precedence over the instruction or vice versa? I realise this was more than 2 questions...

I’m with Denmark u-19s right now and this is what I’ve learnt. Check the national pool regularly and send your scouts to the players you’re interested in long before the international window because you don’t want to risk not knowing how good they are when you want to be playing them. Also don’t set up a really complicated tactic that they are not very familiar with. I keep it simple and my players have a good understanding when they arrive (this is important because you don’t get much training time with them)

When you have tight marking as a team instructions, you tell your team to mark the opponent rather than the space. So your players will get closer to the opponents, making it harder to pass balls into their feet but opening up space in behind. If you tell someone to mark a specific opponent they will mark that guy regardless of his position.

    Tight marking
Offensive threats, players you can dominate physically, low speed and dribbling
    -
    High speed and dribbling
    Pressing intensity
Poor mobility, dribbling and control (especially threats)
You using a narrow formation against wide players
Defenders with poor concentration and composure

So having played FM for way too many year's I've decided OPI use should be minimal and only to add a little something that you don't already have in TI and PI, as in if you have TI extreme pressing & counter pressing is no need to go and set a bunch of players to pressing with the OPI or if you have TI tighter making or players with tight making then no neee to set a bunch of player's OPI to tight making, but if you don't have any TI or PI set tight making then maybe not a bad idea to set some OPI to tight marking, same if you don't use TI get stuck in and no player's with tackle harder PI then maybe set some OPI to tackle harder on some players, basically i think OPI can overkill some instructions that you already have ir could help in area's that you don't have instructions.

Wing backs so not full backs but wingbacks, have your wingers man mark them so they actually track back if it is the 5 2 3 variant. Defeated that Conte tactic so many times doing that hehe.

i've recently learned the virtue of starting games with no oppo instructions and see how first 10/15 goes. like you say, sometimes they can stifle and hinder rather than help.
don't set it to your assistant because *they will* make weird mistakes that will cost you at the very least chances and field position and at worst, points and promotions/relegations.

DON'T MARK ANYONE WHO IS NOT A FORWARD OR A PLAYMAKER! and for the love of god don't mark the entire team or each individual player..if the opposition gets past the player you specifically marked on them and you have your other players marking specific players, no one attempt to pick up the guy on the ball.... this is why zonal marking was created lol

always show wings and attacker and wing back in their weak foots unless he is player that play with both foots
never tight marking fast wingers and if thay can't shots don't close down players
tight marking use only for best strikers in the games and don't use it in 2 strikers plan you don't want to leave the other striker rooming free in 2 strikers plan just show them in their weak foot and tackle harder
tackle harder any players that can make the difference that's the basic of it good luck you need it the second year of the game
if your going to buy players and you 100 % know he is goings to play for you until he retired use 50 % next sale claus
