- Winning a Champions League is the pinnacle of Football Manager achievement. But, FM puts up some roadblocks when you get to the final hurdle. Once you have your FM dynasty in the making on the cusp, how do you pull past the best teams in the world? Is it finances? Scouting? PILES OF WONDERKIDS? Well, Football Manager is typically complicated at this stage, but after taking BATE to a title in less than 10 years, I have some road maps to share.
This is a concept in Football Manager I have touched on in passing on a couple of different videos, but as we get later in the FM cycle winning the UCL has become a much more common question. How to finally get past Liverpool and City and United, or how to build your local team into a power despite being in a far-off league. Champions League titles can come for anyone, this video will help.

One aspect of FM I have found useful for winning cup finals are finding the winning personality traits and tailoring player stats directly to your tactic when team building. For example, I had teams before with incredible stats all round in every position, but lots of my key players were inconsistent in their assistant report analysis, some players also had a personality trait which were temperamental or low determination. Low and behold, I would loose finals all the time when on paper I had stronger players, when looking at attributes alone. As I have played more saves over the years, I now prioritise particular attributes over any others which are determination and work rate, these form the basis of a winning mentality. Then I look for particular attributes which suit my tactic (i.e. passing and composure if I am using a tiki taka style tactic). I also prioritise the personality trait, to the point where even if a player as amazing attributes but has a fickle personality I would not let that player anywhere near my carefully curated team, which is full of winners, with traits such as professional, resolute, ambitious, model citizen ect. I also look for the hidden stats through scouting reports, these include two major traits I also avoid, inconsistency and does not enjoy big matches. You want to see a scout report which either shows that a player loves big matches and is consistent or at least doesn't say the opposite. Curating teams with these attributes and traits creates a winning squad and I have only win the champions league with teams that have these aspects to their game. In addition, you will notice that this team building style sets a culture in the dressing room, so as you bring in future prospects, lots of these personality traits and determination levels rub off on the younger players and they too become winners as they start to establish themselves. I hope this helps anyone struggling to loose their champions league virginity.

I'm managing PSV and my UCL groups are cursed. 3 years in a row my group would consist of previous year's winner + PSG or Man City. 4th team once was Salzburg. Downgraded to europa league last year I beat Porto and Man city eventually loosing to Arsenal who in the second leg scored free kick from 30 meters, corner deflection + longshot. 4-3 on aggregate. This year hoping to break the curse even tho there are Real Madrid and Man city in the group

my current save is man utd reborn. except i won CL in the first year lol. i was even resting ppl for some of the knockouts expecting to lose anyway. it was the easiest effortless weird CL run I've ever had.

I recently signed a Czech Striker in Bulgaria who was tipped to be the best player in the world, signed him for 5.5m pounds (might have overspendt but i just needed a young striker at the time) and at 17 he is already almost the best striker in the premier league with 20 aperances and 18 goals

I bought a typical Brazillian 19 year old for my Turkish team that qualified for the European League. Paid 11m or so. He was the key player instantly. Won the Turkish league and got to even the semi finals in European League and lost to Arsenal. Next season, BAM Athletico Madrid bought him for 74m and my board accepted because ''too good of an offer''. Well, I wasn't too upset since I bought another younger player for cheaper that had better potential.
Similar case when I found a young Syrian player that I bought in the lower leagues. Paid barely 100k for him. 2 years later, a Chinese team came and paid 30m for him.
Getting very deep into my Polish League Warta Poznan save. Lost in the final 4 seasons back and gone out in the last 16 every season since despite my team getting better year on year. Think my team cohesion is poor as everyone is constantly getting unsettled, will look at match review/team bonding to fix.

Great video as always Zealand, also another tip that I stole from you is to find junior affiliates with very established or extensive youth recruitment so you can get world class regens. Also improving facilities as often as possible. Only thing I disagree with is the team talks. Everything you said is correct when applied to home games as the expectation has to be that you win every time at home but you need to soften the stance away from home. If the team has missed a few chances but you are drawing at half time, telling the team they are doing well has usually served me well

In my Bayern Save I started back during the FM19 Beta I'm currently in the early 2030s, Joshua Zirkzee (Bayerns biggest talent irl) is the best Player in the World and battles Mbappe (who I bought a couple years ago just for the lolz) every year for the Ballon d'Or. I won the CL the last four years in a row, three out of those four times were Triples.

I know this is a year later, but thanks for this Zealand. First year of my Inter save I made it to the SF where I lost 3-2 agg to PSG thanks to a goddamn Icardi penalty. Second year I got knocked out in the last 16 by Bayern, having wasting too many chances. All this considering I'm absolutely dominating Serie A. Anyway, I'm in the third year now, and I hope to bring the CL back to Giusseppe Meazza.

So, FM20 was free, installed. Last played version was FM06. Thought, piece of cake, but let's try out what's new. Started with Arsenal, 4-3-1-2, got 9th and was sacked before the season was up. What the ... ?!
OK, let's use a bigger club. AC Milan then. Transfer budget was ... 3mil?! Wtf? Did the football world changed so much since? (Answer - "yes".) In debt even, but has a few good (i.e. 3*) players. Bear in mind that in FM20, i had no idea who this Zealand was (I just watched his videos weeks ago, 2022, in fact~!) ... ok, noticed that the Arsenal was always been countered to dearth, so ... recalling Sir Alex (DISCLAIMER - Blackburn fan here actually), i plug for a 4-4-1-1 so as crowd the midfield ... with mainly the 3*-s and a few 4*-s, got 2nd place. The Zebras (aka Juventus) had a 10+ points lead with Ronaldo and company though. Wow.
2nd season. Transfer budget was ... 4mil, i think? AC Milan. Wow. Got an old AMC named David Silva from Man C i think. Another 30+ SC free from Denmark. 2nd placed again, and finally a SC who scored 10+ goals (albeit with penalties). Ronaldo is destroying teams.
... next few seasons about the same (at work, so cannot check, sorry). Comfortable "best-of-the-rest" (2nd), but Zebras is untouchable. Around the 5th season, cannot even make it to the CL's knock-outs and went to Europa knock-outs instead. Confidence took a dent. Though Milan did win the Europa that season (first major trophy), but ...
Yeah. Finally used a Cautious mentality, esp for away matches. The next season though, beat PSG away at the Group Stage (with a mainly 3*/4* team, mind you. Think the brilliant GK hasnt reached his full potential yet), and was, ok, an improvement~! ... Decided to use a Cautious Mentality for Away CL matches. Perhaps a few key Serie A matches too ... That season, was 2nd again, but ... Shocker - won the Champions League~! I repeat, I cannot win the Serie A for years, and then actually won the Champions League. With only 3*/4* players, and without a top scoring SC. Team cohesion is only half bar too, i recalled.
Big Wow. Anyway, finally Ronaldo had to retire, and then finally Milan went on top. In fact, it was 20+ seasons later that i finally got a 5* regen SC, and finally got a SC who scored 20+ goals a season (because i am like Wenger who doesnt like spending. This 5* SC is "only" 87mil). Btw, this SC has only 13 Finishing for some weird reasons, ha.
Then finally, what Zealand stated in this video happened, and Milan plays Attacking all season with the same old 4-4-1-1 (ok, maybe a few times when things got too close, i would go to Cautious in the second half Away). No second tactics ever - just let the AI overcompensate the "Half-season-syndrome" until the AI mess itself up. And while it is 2045 and i won the Serie A for 18 consecutive years, Milan only started winning the CL more regularly when the 5* SC joined, even when my players were now 3* - 5*s. Seriously, he singlehandledly carried the team at times. Wow wow.
My takeaway is the same since CM97 - get the best staff (gradually if in LLM), scout and buy the best players, and play the way you want. As long as the team of 20+ players are really good (in FM20 terms - 4*/5*-ers), the (great) players (likely with high Decisions) would override your lousy tactics and a 6 Header Winger is gonna head a goal in from the far post anywayz.
Do wanna add that in FM20, keeping the players happy is KEY.

I finally did it in my 5th season with PSV, thank you
I did this once, lower league all the way to the top. But it got so boring for me.
Now I try a different challenge, I start in some second league, with one of the poorer teams, and try to win the champions league as well, but I cannot sign more than one contract per club. First time I went Volendam, got promoted, to PSV, got to the CL final second season, then had to wait a couple months of unemployment for Ath. Madrid, got bored, quit.
Now I'm thinking of trying again with a different second tier team, but haven't been able to decide yet. Was considering starting with a B-team, but those can't get promoted, so a second season with those could become very boring.
The fact that you get 2-3 years Max at a top club makes it considerably more challenging, because you have to actually pay real money for players that could make a difference in those years. Your video on how to sell players should help me a lot though, it was really challenging to not be able to get a good price for my dead wood, I think your advice can make this challenge more feasible.

I dont want to brag but im going to anyway. Im with you on the euro cup 2. Before my current save on my new pc i had a journeyman save that started at wigan and went around Europe. Lasted 14 seasons before my new pc arrived. I won the euro cup 2 three times. Twice with montpellier and once with Boavista. Im like Sevilla.

For me in my game I wouldn’t want to get to the point where I’m winning too much and I enjoy making mistakes with players as that happens in reality but I do want to improve scouting because that’s what top clubs do and in my save where we’re like a new PSG but started in the 8th tier in England with a self made team in Essex we are looking to compete on a big level (currently in the championship 2025/26 season promoted every year so far)

I started at FC Bayern II in the 3rd german leauge. I won the 3rd league 2 times and went on to train St. Pauli in the 2nd german League. I was 2nd in the 2nd League, went to the Bundesliga, and managed to be 10th then 7th, then 6th. I waited for a call from Bayern, they never called. I moved to Leipzig, they were 7th at that time (me being above them with St. Pauli). Won the league with Leipzig 7 times in a row now and the CL three times. I managed St. Pauli so good, that they kept being a Europe League contender throught all these years without me, with the main players being the ones that I once brought with me from Bayern II :)
How I avoided the pulling power? Big ass contracts, so high that even PSG thought it's not worth it. My top players scratch, or are above, the 20 mio/year line.
Made 539 mill summer transfer, reinvested 200 mill into squad and 100mill into investment players. Still made another 100mill in winter, still got 244 mill to spend.

If you don’t have time to wire the world - just go to Boca or River and buy their hottest prospect- usually cost around 6-7M euros and they will easily be worth 20-30 when they come to your team. Banfield has been weirdly a good wonderkid factory in my save. Atletico National in Colombia - these players are cheap - around 1.5M euros you could have the next James or Zapata.

Printing money is a good idea IRL if you distribute it in a way that increases productivity. It offsets the inflationary effect :) US, UK, Japan, Australia, any country with a sovereign currency has been doing it ever since the gold standard died and it's a pretty effective way of stimulating the economy.

in my Manchester United save I won the champions league 2 times in a row really early on... Then I moved to Atletico Madrid and won it in my first season... I don't know how I did it cause I'm generally not very good at FM... But I've been avoiding playing on that save so I don't lose my winning streak lol

I have won the champions league once, but never won PL. I have consistently placed top 4, but it's so hard to win the league.
My Milan didnt win the league as long as Ronaldo is with Zebras. Wrote earlier that i actually won the Champions League before winning the Serie A, when Ronaldo finally decided to retire. That's what, 7 seasons later? 😆"
And, season 2045 now, but i did notice that the EPL is really a much harder league. Also, the Wolves and Watfords outbid Milan for seasons, like, wtf? Always dread facing an English team in the CL (which would happen eventually in the later rounds, ha. I would have an all 100% condition best-11 team because of heavy rotation, they have 90% condition, and still it's a roll of dice), and then when managing Italy (as an English co-manager of Milan, ahem), facing England is a FM nightmare. I dont save/load CM/FMs (because the fun is about the journey indeed, win or lose), but just as an experiment, i keep loading the 2040 Italy vs England game until I got the win. NEVER scored in open play, won only because of a penalty 1-0. Seriously. *shrugs

If you offer trials to players immediately after their newgen day, they almost always accept, you can sign them and pay a nominal compensation fee. If you're a smaller club than their parent though you might need to offer them a truck load of cash
11 seasons spent with MU, even I'm now at the point where i need to revamp the squad for the 2nd time (spoilers: it made me finish at 7th where i won the treble last season. but no UCL, bottled the final, against Tottenham :'), ironic), still no UCL, either smashed by Barca, or bottled the 2nd leg, or bottled the final too, and now even at European Conferences League i won't finish at the top at the Group Stage, it made me depressed and unmotivated to play FM again :') and i have a problem with FFP now btw
btw one tips for y'all, have a good relationships with ur players, it should says "Hold u in the highest regards as head coach", it'll be useful someday, like in my save, no UCL next season, half of my squad being unhappy, and i said you won't get these same atmosphere everywhere, you won't enjoy football etc and they like forgetting the fact there won't be UCL next season.

What do you usually do when two players form a bad relationship on the pitch? Is there any way to improve it? Does it actually affect the way your team performs?
I'm curious how Zealand would play as a team like Barcelona or Real Madrid. A team that is playing at the top, but a year or two later is weighed down by players on a rapid decline. Players with years left on their contracts and wages that guarantee no one will buy them. Sure, both have a large stable of great youth players, but when those players start getting the playing time, they'll want the wages that go along with that, which is really hard to provide when you're shoveling €15m into a 3 pace, 34 year old Busquets, or €32m into a 9 acceleration, 32 year old Bale who spends half the season out from a training injury.
Its funny. I'm usually terrible at FM and struggle in domestic competitions but in my 2nd season at Ajax I managed to cause an upset and win the UCL after signing a bunch of high potential South American players. FM is weird man.
To be fair though, the country you’re in can depend on pull even if you win the champions league as a player you’d still want to leave that smaller club/nation to play in a bigger one. Look at Montpellier or Leicester when they won their leagues teams still took their players

A lot of this holds up in the older, simpler FM games too (at least in my experience). I don't have the entertainment budget to buy the new version every year, so I'm sometimes left playing the older version of a game like FM. I also play a few different games, so I don't progress through my saves as quickly as others would. I have a newer version of FM that works (my FM 16 broke and before getting a new system my old system couldn't handle FM 18), but I'm trying to take care of some unfinished business on my trusty copy of FM 13 before moving on to the newer version.
I've taken Hayes & Yeading from the 6th tier in England to the Premier League and gotten to the point where I'm regularly earning Europa play. I brought in the best scout that was willing to come to my team when I was in 6th tier, which helped me hit more than I missed on my signings, which led to me going up through the leagues pretty quickly, and I now have a scouting department that I think would make a number of national team managers envious. I built a young squad with good potential. The consistency was sometimes a bit lacking, but I was under my wage budget so my finances were in better shape than a lot of teams as I promoted through the leagues. Now as I near the end of my 6th season in the Premier League I'm in the top 20 richest clubs in the world and I'm narrowing the gap to the top 4 and finally breaking into the Champions League. Pretty much my whole starting 11 (and a number of my regulars off the bench) are current 3.5 ability with 4.5-5 potential. My next match is actually the Europa Final against Schalke and I'm being touted as the favorites. One area where I do need to improve is not dropping as many points against teams I should be beating and being more aggressive from the opening whistle against those teams may help do the trick. Adding some additional depth and growing my reserve squad will also help. My new board seem to have more interest in discovering our own talent than the old board did, so hopefully I'll start getting better regens next season.
In my current game I have won 9 CL's in 16 seasons, 13 prems, 7 FA cups and a league cup. Its really , really , really fucking simple. you buy 1 or 2 essential player you need to fill whatever squad holes you have.......and from then on you spend 90-95% of all you budget and future budgets on buying the best 16 yr olds every year, within 3-5 years you will win league titles and constantly make money through selling the ones that dont quite make it, works in EVERY CM/FM game I have ever played

I managed a similar team in Leicester and in the first few years its about scrapping into the champions league, while trying to close the commercial and match-day revenue gap with the big clubs.

Any tips on how to manage a low level team? Im planning on starting with a USL or MLS team if I dont decide to just say "**** it" and start with Bayern right away, but Id be clueless trying to manage a team with the budget to hire next to nobody.
