G2 Research R.I.P. Shotgun Slugs - FIRST! Tests

  • Using non-traditional ballistic mediums, we test out the performance of the new G2 Research R.I.P. Shotgun Slugs. I don't think we have tested a slug with SUCH a specific application before, short of the bean bag rounds. We received only 5 of these slugs so we showed every single shot. We didn't have any spares to take practice shots or correct for cameraman malfunctions.
The wet magazines were MOSTLY uniform in thickness, but we did have some variations in overall thickness. We measured the depth of the various projectiles the closest we could get. For those wishing we shot at $160 blocks of clear gel, we'll leave that to other channels so they will be able to add something to the discussion.
Check out Gy6's awesome test of the OATH Tango slugs here:

TAOFLEDERMAUS it’s not about how much it is to produce. I can appreciate that it’s a mechanically well made round. But, the trocars are a useless gimmick. It’s like someone putting a LRM rifle scope on a 9mm pistol. The extra cost just isn’t justified. For them to be worth the 10x cost of the federal slug or the 20x difference in the wax slug, you’d have to see a commensurate increase in performance. I just don’t see that.

Hmm, I think I called it pretty well. It does spin a little bit, but goes sideways/yaws into a flat spin because the fins aren't catching any air until it tumbles a bit. They need to offset the slits in the front blades halfway between where they are now, so the air can flow out of the pressurized front into the valleys of the rear fins.

But on the other hand, ANYTHING you throw at someone out of a 12-gauge shotgun will kill in one center of mass hit or headshot at home defense distances, which are typically 5 yards or less. I can see something like RIP rounds helping in a handgun, because conventional ones suck at killing people fast, but a shotgun is one and done, and a rifle round doesn't actually benefit much from hollow points or anything like that,. FMJ is best for a rifle cartridge, because the tumbling and hydrostatic shock from the 2000-3000 FPS velocity does a crap ton of damage on a rifle caliber. So RIP is only useful-ish in handgun bullets, and from what I've researched, RIPs are decent in that area, though the jagged fronts can cause feeding issues, and they're awfully expensive for how little extra benefit you get.

As always a great video guys! This slug did as it said which seems rare these days but i do agree it would be nice it they make it universal but as for range i agree that for home defense 10yrds is more than appropriate! As always thanks and keep up the great work!!!

That was worth the wait - not being a shooter😩 (from the UK - Scotland) it's great to see direct side by side comparisons. As per usual a fantastic video, in very testing conditions (Question - does temperature affect ballistic gel or clay, or would it require a much larger temperature difference?) Just curious.

3ountyhunter ftw You say that as if it's perfectly obvious but (a) I live in Scotland so it never gets anywhere near those kind of temperatures (b) I live in Scotland so ballistic gel isn't too common. So what is obvious to you might not be to someone from somewhere else. It's affected, not "effected" BTW. Thanks.

I have learned so much from Paul Harrell.
For my pistol, practice rounds will be Remington Green & White box 124 grain jacketed hollow points. For my carry rounds, I will be using Remington Green & White box 124 grain jacketed hollow points. It is rare that for these "hyper" ammunitions, that you get what you pay for. Not always, but rare.
For my shotgun, practice rounds will be Federal 2-3/4" Speed-Shok 12GA Waterfowl Loads using steel BBs. For my home-defense, rounds will be Federal 2-3/4" Speed-Shok Waterfowl loads using steel BBs. These are devastating to soft targets at close range with little chance for overpenetration if shooting inside a structure, while still being able to shoot at longer ranges with effect.
    (Don't have a rifle, sorry.)
Basically it comes down to consistency and price for performance. Many times I have seen Remington G&W box have similar or _better_ performance than the "hyper" ammunition, even if that "hyper" ammo has a higher muzzle velocity. One of the few rounds that did impress me was the lightweight Xtreme Penetrator from LeHigh, the temporary cavitation is incredible, but still not worth it - *to me.*

couple things if you shoot someone you shoot them until they are dead and when it comes to rounds it's a toss up you give up range when you get it to wax slugs and buckshot or these G2 rounds but when get into slugs you get over penetration and it could be an issue depending on where you live but your range increases. In my experience with indoor or close range engagements 00 buck is the way to go. You can shoot it out of pretty much every shotgun and it won't penetrate nearly as much as a slug but will penetrate clothing well and knock a man down. Most deadly engagements happen within 20 yards and inside your house much closer. The best way to figure out what type of round would best fit your needs is to measure the distance between you and your most likely farthest shot think about what's behind it and see how different rounds perform at that and closer ranges. 00 buck and a flight control wad May be to tight a group for use in your home remember the goal is to put max amount of pellets into the target but also you want a spread because in a high stress situation your aim is going to be a little off in most cases. And in a home most people don't have anything close to 20 yards of distance most are going to be 10 yards or less. These G2 rounds are great but what if the guy is 20 yards away and running at you with a knife. A person with a knife can stab you from 7 yards in 1 1/2 Sec or 14 yards in 3 Sec that is faster than most people can even identify the attacker and draw aim and get a round off. So that in mind if your ammo only has a effective range of 10 yards it might not be the ammo for you. The point I'm trying to make is that it's mission dependent and if yours and your family's life depends on it you want to make the right choice.

Hey, Jeff, I have a pretty decent idea. Please hear me out here, but in the future when you get more of these slugs, try filling the empty space in the shell with wax just as you do with a birdshot shell. My hypothesis is that it may reduce air resistance and allow for the round to go further with more accuracy. Maybe even try something such as silly putty or hot glue. Once again, great vid!

these are like land mines. you buy them once and if your replacing them more than once then you're in a situation that is inadequate for the protection the land mine provides.... so I've heard.

    • @benvaun1330

Ro Bc well these are designed to be home defensive rounds. the slug is designed to shread on impact and dump all it's energy so that it doesn't go through your target and the walls behind it that could have your children, neighbors, wife, husband, etc.. in a home defense situation the longest shot you will probable have is about 20-25 ft. these are accurate to 10yds or 30ft. unless you live in an 8000+ sqft house there will be no occasion you will shoot over 30ft with this round.

  • @warpedone3711

My uncle found them and gave me a box of 5. Ask me to try them out see what I thought of them.
2 for sighting in 100 yards within an inch. Third round I hit 160 lb whitetail at about 75 yards. Hit him just above and in back of the heart.
It took out both shoulders, the whole rib cage on the exit side half on entrance side, third of the back strap was junk and shell shock went halfway up the neck. The organs were like a gelatinous blob.
The last two were used to cut down trees.

I'm curious how a 'home defence' round is judged? Something intended to ensure death? Seems like all these home defence rounds will leave a target with little to no chance of ever pulling through.

If criminals know there is a risk of death, they might think twice before breaking into your house.

iStormUK home defense rounds are rounds designed to neutralize the threat with the least risk of collateral damage.

    • @LinkHyrule03
      @LinkHyrule03 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

iStormUK, the well being of the criminal is irrelevant to the task of home defense, survival, and keeping you and your family alive and safe. The goal is to remove the criminal's physical ability to fight (or even pull a trigger) as quickly as physically possible.
Most of the time, that means disrupting the central nervous system, stopping the function of vital organs, or exsanguinating the target quickly enough to cause unconsciousness via insufficient blood flow to the head.
Their safety or well being is entirely irrelevant. In most cases, the means to stop their biological ability to fight comes with the high likelihood that they might lose their life.
To further compound issues, the US criminal court system arguably inadvertently punishes the innocent defenders if the criminal survives while the US civil court system intentionally punishes innocent defenders by encouraging surviving criminals to sue the innocent defender who legally used force against them.
These RIP slugs are actually somewhat underperforming compared to most other 12 gauge defensive offerings. Traditional high-powered slugs will be FAR more devastating than this. 00 buck produces more wounds in more organs over an area to increase the likelihood of a rapid cessation of the threat. Each of the 8-15 pellets are individually viable wounds. Combined, they are highly effective, if prone to a full pass-through, which may cause issues. #4 buckshot does more or less the same thing, but with 27-41 pellets, each of which is a viable wound that won't overpenetrate. The size of the damaged area, the density of the pellet strikes, the sheer number of affected organs, the number of wounds per organ, and the penetration of each pellet makes it an amazingly effective load for self defense within the home.
Firearms are not to be used lightly against non-violent threats. You use a firearm when a bad guy wants to kill or rape you or a member of your family. When that is the case, I guarantee that you won't much care about the well-being of that crazed murderer/rapist.
If, for whatever reason, you really do care about the well being of the person who wants to kill you or your family, such that you refuse to use lethal force even if it means you or a family member will die, then may I suggest using words or defensive tools that are not firearms, such as pepper spray. You'll likely die in the process, but at least you stuck to your morals of refusing to ever use lethal force to defend yourself or a loved one from a horrible fate.

That happens with effective terminal performance. I I have to shoot someone in my home, at that point I couldn't give a rat's ass wheither they die. In fact, you are better off if they do. They can't make up a tales about how you invited them in, and then shot them. Plus, if you maim or cripple them, or they require medical care the rest of their sorry life, they or the family will sue and empoverish you the rest of your productive life. If they die, generally speaking, all that can be sued for is their projected income. If not gainfully employed, that might be zero.

I laughed out loud when the clay block blew apart... I am so broken! I would think the use of the fragmenting load has a very premature wide pattern. I think the Taurus Judge using .410 triple 0 buck has a far cleaner shot. After it goes boom, you own it.

Considering that it's for home defense, do you need any more range?still overpriced

    • @Sciguy95
      @Sciguy95 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@zuccx99 I'm not sure I would consider something specifically designed to do extreme amounts of damage to a person at close range "defense". In the same way that using a machete to hack off someone's arm wouldn't be considered self defense.

Notice the projectile penetrated a lot of dry paper without expansion. Expansion only took place after a deep penetration. On ballistics jell the expansion is very quick. Shoots through clothing and expands in flesh. Just the things for home protection.

For the record, I'm 51 and I've never seen Kelvin used for temperature since I was in college taking chemistry and physics in 1993/4, outstanding. 🙂 So much easier given it starts at absolute 0, 273 is freezing temp of water, 373 is boiling temp of water at sea level or 1 atmosphere/101 325 pascals. Rankine is pretty exotic, never seen that either, I suppose given each degree is based on Fahrenheit from absolute zero, it's likely used almost exclusively in the States and I'm about 5km, at this moment, North of the United States, pretty much, permanently on this side.
