Skin Infections: Red Flags (Never Miss These Symptoms)

  • How can you tell right away whether your patient's skin infection is something you can easily treat with oral antibiotics or something more complicated and even life-threatening?
Something that will require diagnostic tests, broad-spectrum antibiotics, or maybe even surgery (sepsis, abscesses, areas of necrosis, necrotizing infections, bacterial arthritis, prosthetic joint infections, diabetic foot infections, osteomyelitis, etc.)?
In any patient with a skin infection (cellulitis, erysipelas, etc.), we should always look for signs of systemic spread, abscesses, deep tissue infections, necrotizing infections, and other factors that make treatment more difficult. The danger signs and red flags covered in this lecture are absolutely essential! The red flags covered in this video will help you recognize severe and potentially life-threatening skin and soft tissue infections as early as possible, even if they appear unimpressive at first.

I want to remind everyone that my videos are for educational purposes only. Of course, everyone is welcome to watch, but the information I present is most useful for junior doctors, nurses, and students. As I stated in the description of every video and on my channel homepage, none of this is medical advice for patients. I don't practice medicine over the internet. If you are a patient and have any questions about your health, please get in touch with your doctor.

I got cellulitis from my cat. We were playing and I got nicked on the side of my hand. I didn’t notice until my hand swelled up , followed by redness and very painful. Within one day I went from no symptoms to the urgent care.

Wow this is an amazing doctor... I wish more like him were that knowledgeable, i got this bacteria infection more than 15 years ago, was horrifying and painful. The worst pain and story of my life, doctors mistake it for many other illnesses they did not know nothing medicating me for another condition they thought it was like thrombosis;( which i was so young on my 20s with no vains exposed or issues with it. But rhey gave me blood thiners... omg so crazy, until many other private doctor cultures brought out i had this bacteria, and needed surgery on mu joint cause infection advanced to my bone in that month thay they dod not know what was goimg on. At first infection was only on skin.

Thank for the info! Seriously. After tearing the skin on 2 nails, the hospital wound care they would clean, wrap it, but no antibiotics as I ask in clinic over 3 months. Wash with warm water & soap. It bubbled up and me cleaning it, I used the same wash cloth on the uninjured left ankle, it became infected. End up in OR with antibiotics injection & oral Rx. Now over the 4th, family came to town and broke my eating habits w/high salt in the foods they serve. Now left foot started turning red and extremely painful to the touch. I see my GP next week. Vaseline and PH neutral cleaner, gauze and compression sock. I am headed for a broad spectrum antibiotic.

I was diagnosed with cellulitis. I thought it was insect bites. I was given steroids antibiotics and Triamcinolone Acetonide cream USP. It didn't really work. Cellulitis reoccured.
I followed up and visited with a Dermatologist, she prescribed antibiotics and Clobetasol cream. It worked for while. It seems like I am getting cellulitis again or maybe it's an inect bite. I had a skin biopsy and I've seen about 3 doctors. I swell up it turns red and it itchy real bad.😢 Thank you for your advice.

Excellent information. Thank you. Two things worth mentioning. First, dead teeth. Dentists bekieve root canal treated teeth are benign. They are not!! Get a 3D x-ray done by a biological dentist only, not a traditional dentist!! Second, ozone gas can be used as a VERY effective adjunct to conventional antibiotic treatments, with no side effects if used properly by a trained professional. I coach my patients to own their own ozone machines to be used at home on a daily basis, as needed. Everyone should know about ozone gas and it's applications. It's wonderful. that's my two cents. God bless all of you

good point. Dentists also believe fluoride is important for tooth enamel. That is a qwack job. Its a neurotoxin.
