That’s not how preload works. Maybe if your car was riding In its fully extended position all the time but preload on adjustable coilovers is to change the bump and compression stroke. Think of it like this when your linear spring is under the weight of the car it will always compress the same amount you’re just changing it’s position in the shocks piston stroke. By adding more preload you increase bump travel so the shock can compress further when you hit a bump and by reducing preload you increase rebound travel. Running around on 0-5mm preload you’ll end up on the bump stops a lot in a street car. I have bc brs on my r56 and I set them up according to factory spec at first. The ride was harsh and bumpy on our terribly paved fl highways and even playing with damper settings made a negligible difference due to the fact that I simply didn’t have enough preload/bump travel and I was hitting the rear bump stops often. Next I removed everything and started over. I measured the distance from my bumpstop to the top inside of the shock at full compression under the weight of the car and realized that I had 1.5cm of bump travel with zero preload and several cm of rebound travel. I wound the spring perch up another cm effectively increasing my compression stroke by %60 and now it rides and handles so much better. Just my experience

Good vid. Nobody ever shows the rear adjustment which I think is the hardest on bc. I’m trying to raise my back but the ring won’t turn without taking the threaded column with it. Do you need to compress the spring or something to adjust?

From what I read in the BC instructions, at 5:27 the method you show is correct to raise the vehicle height. However, to lower the vehicle the instructions say to turn to TOP collar. The very first one at the top. That collar should be turned counter clockwise to lower the vehicle.

    @ 6:40 ~ 6:53... 🤦‍♂
And I was so looking forward to seeing the rest of the video, after a strong start of the video...
Milan Mastracci is absolutely correct in saying: raising or lowering, should adjust the bottom mount.
Unfortunately, "pre-set" is the most often misunderstood concept.
Can't blame Milan Mastracci here; there's too much wrong info circulating out there, and most folks got guided to trust that wrong info.
Plain and simple: There is no real "pre-set".
Reason: Once the car's own weight is dropped onto the wheels/tires, the spring will be compressed until it's supporting that corner of the car.
Where the pre-set nut was placed at, does not change that spring rate. Since the spring rate is the same, it'll always compress to the same "at rest" location, for the same weight in that corner of the car.
So, what does "pre-set" really change?
It changes the relative "at rest" position of the piston inside the shock body.
In layman's terms, it changes how much of the shock is available to droop/extension (dips in the road), vs how much is available to compression (bumps in the road).
One should NEVER change this pre-set, thinking it'll change how much the spring is "pre-compressed". The moment you do that, you mess up the droop-vs-compression ratio.
Also, if these coilovers came from the factory like that (where the height is all messed up), then clearly those various adjustment nuts were not setup to this specific vehicle from the factory.
In this situation, you cannot trust the pre-set position, you cannot trust the lower mount position.
Installation should have gone the long way:
Remove the spring from the coilover.
Mount the spring-less coilover onto the car.
Mount the wheels & tires onto the car. (Car should stay lifted, since there's no damn spring in the suspension/coilovers)
Fully compress the shocks (raise the wheel/tires) until bump stop. If tires rub, then extend/lengthen the lower mount adjustment until no more rubbing when at bump stop. For front wheels, make sure you also checked steering extremes.
    Fully extend the shocks.
    Between full-compress & full-extend, calculate shock's total travel.
Divide that into 1/3 for droop & 2/3 for compress.
Setup the car's chassis to the proper ride height. Meaning: something needs to support the car's chassis and safely hold it at ride height vs the floor. (No, 2x4's are not safe. But if you do that, that's on you.)
Allow the wheels/tires to "rest" on the "ground". (still no spring in the coilover)
Now change the lower mount position, until 2/3 of the travel-able shock (piston) is outside the shock body.
    Lock the lower mount lock-nut.
Take this measurement (lower mount position) - copy/paste to the other side (left vs right).
    Remove wheel/tire.
    Remove coilover from car.
Put the coilover's spring back in.
    Reinstall coilover, wheel/tire.
Allow the car's weight onto this coilover now. (The "spacer block" that was prop'ing the car's chassis at ride height, should be removed at this point.)
At this point, you might not have 2/3 of the travel-able shock (piston/rod) outside the shock body, that's fine.
Turn/change the pre-set, until you've again exposed 2/3 of the travel-able shock (piston/rod) outside the shock body. --> Keep in mind since the car weight is all resting on the coilover/wheel/tire, every time you attempt this adjustment, the car should be lifted at this corner to get the weight off the coilover. If you attempt to make this adjustment with car weight on it, you will destroy the coilover's threads for the preset.
Once this proper position (of the preset rings) is reached, copy/paste this measurement to the other side.
    Now, that's the THEORY.
In practice, this procedure is extremely impractical unless your car is on an alignment rack with a built-in lift, that can lift/drop the car relative to the rack.
Otherwise, there simply is no space for your arms & tools to reach the adjustments - and you'll be forced to mount/remove the wheel/tire almost every single adjustment iteration. Pain in the neck.
This is a useful page to reference. Same procedure I described above.

Good video. You should make another video mentioning the eyelet hole on the shock body because I talked to a BC rep about what that hole is and it's a safety measurement mark show the minimum point you adjust the cartridge. Every BC application is different on many cars so some have bigger or less minimums. So pretty much if you dont see anymore threads in that hole then it's too high and have the possibly to crack components because there is not enough material to be supported. Keep it in mind.

  • @EnjoyCar
    @EnjoyCar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You should remake this video for 2024- how to PROPERLY set your coilovers. Ride height is adjusted by moving the spring up and down the shock body. It doesn't change preload or anything. The lower shock mount is only for adjusting clearance at maximum bump (when the whole knuckle is pushed all the way up into the car). You move the lower mount down so nothing hits. This video is all wrong and can cause people to have accidents.

thank you for making this video. my buddy pretty much said the same thing last year when the BC was installed on my 9nth gen si. but as someone who wants to doublecheck, there was little information explaining these coilovers, and in one video, it was comprehended that you had to change preload with ride height. doesn't help that the instructions were just as vague and when I asked on a forum, no one could help me out or there was any past thread regarding how to make changes on the coil overs. This had prevented me from switching out my OEM wheels with nice advans. now I can make the changes with confidence. thanks

I’m new to coil overs and am currently adjusting my ride height. I just want to know if this will effect the preload and do I have to do anything to it after changing ride height?

Damn, it must suck being a runt. When I have a vehicle that my jack doesn't fit under, I grab the fender, pick up on it , then slide jack under

I install my coilovers on my 350z today and the back moves or jump a lot, any reason why ?

Put mine on out of the box and had the left front 2 inches higher than the right and the right rear an inch and a half higher that the left . Had to do some crazy tweaking to level everything back out . Hindsight says spend 700$ instead of 300 . Whoops

preload means the gap between the suspension ? we should maintain the gap between the top ring and the bottom ring ?

The front looked nice though, being slammed like that

Yeah I agree!! That's where bags come in.. Slam it like that when you park, and then raise it to drive away

*Good video. Didn't scan the comments all the way through. Just wondering if anyone mentioned that an oval track is left side turning?*

I lowered my car but can’t properly align the rear tires and I am dreading excessive wear on one side only. Are adjustable control arms the solution for this?

If coilover means coil over shock does that mean the factory shock on my car is a coilover? Because it looks just like this aside from the adjustability.

Do you need adjustment of wheel and camber when adjusting the height of coilover?

Old video I know but the springs on mine weren't spinning when I was adjusting the ride height while they were on the car. Is this a problem?

When i turn the locking lock collar to the right to raise the car, the collar moves but the springs doesn't though the height adjusted fine . Why is that?

That is not a micrometer, those are calipers. Micrometers measure how flat a surface is. Calipers measure the distance between to surfaces or the inner and outer diameter of circular shapes. Calipers and micrometers and two very different things

How do you know how high is maxed but being safe without lifting it too high? My dad wants to make his car as high as possible.

What if the 2 collars keep coming apart when trying to lower the vehicle? Even after tightened them back

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Then tighten them more. I've never had any of those collars loosen, but I've had some of them seize from tightening too much 🙈

Hey brother, do they sell a stronger spirng forbthe BC coilover, insted of preloading the spring more

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  ปีที่แล้ว

You would preload the spring, regardless of the spring rate.

That is not a micrometer you are using. They are digital calipers. Big difference.

I have GC coilovers on my FC3S and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't raise...
Turns out I was adjusting the top 2 collars thinking that's how you "raise the height" (makes sense, right?) when in fact I was just increasing the preload, smdh.
    Back to the drawing board...
