    I gotta tell ya man, as a 25yr mechanic, you have the most detailed instructional videos ive ever seen on youtube. You explain things in the same way i explain things to young apprentices so that they understand it right the first time. Never skipping over anything, and knowing all the small details that need to be pointed out is so key to learning. Well done brother!

    GREAT VIDEO. FINALLY someone who explains how to install and adjust the rear coil overs. I really don't know why so many videos just skip them. I read somewhere random that I just had to adjust the height of the rear shock. Totally left out of wack my spring. It kept banging hard, Until I finally found your video explaining how to properly install them. I just went ahead and took them off and adjusted them. Kinda perfect now, only feeling how soft or hard i need to leave em. Great video, learnt a lot !Will recommend to friends

    Each to their own but I've always used shock body to dictate bump stop engagement, then spring perch (preload) to adjust compression travel vs rebound travel.
    -Adjusting ride height using shock body adjustment only is a good way to get the tyre to collide with body work.
    -Adjusting spring perch to a generic 5mm is a good way to either not have enough compression travel (no grip), or not have enough rebound travel (no grip) depending on spring stiffness.

    Very useful video. I found this because I searched how to adjust the preload because the inner rear wheel has been spinning too much in tight corners. So I'm hoping this makes a difference to the performance of my Skyline.

    Unfortunately most people (and most cheap coil over manufactures them selves) don't know how to set up these types of coilovers properly.
    The required bump/droop ratio (2/3 bump to 1/3 droop is usually a good guideline) should be set by first installing the coilovers on the car with no springs fitted. Adjust the coil over in the damper body so the piston is at the correct point for the desired ratio at the desired ride height. You can fit the wheels and fully compress the suspension at this point to check clearance. If all is well, refit the springs and use the spring "preload" to bring the damper piston back to the required point determined above (set the ride height).
    Doing this allows you to set the height without altering the bump/droop ratio like you are doing when you adjust the height with the lower damper body in the video. You're either taking away bump or droop doing it as you are.
    You may find you need a helper spring if the spring now separates from the seat at full droop. Don't worry about using preload to adjust height either, it makes no difference how much preload the spring has once the weight of the car is compressing it, it will be the same length (as long as it's the more common linear spring type rather than progressive).
    Suspension Secrets website have some great articles about this on their website, it takes a bit of setting up but is absolutely worth it to get the most out of your coilovers.
    Usually the higher end brands like KW/NITRON etc use single body dampers so none of this is required, they set the bump/droop for you and only adjust height via the spring perch. These dual body designs are just used for cheapness so they can carry the design over to other models, but for that reason setting them up as above is pretty important.

      @daokochan6245 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is correct. Blows my mind how much misinformation is out there on this and continues to be repeated. What hes doing DOES achieve what most people are buying coils want and thats to just lower a car. I'd wager most dont know any better, may just not care about doing it this way, or will never use the shock in a situation where you want full use of the shock travel.

    • @wrkls_
      @wrkls_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like how you adjust the rear coilovers preload vs how BC explains it. Turning the damper to lift/ compress the spring bucket 5mm is easier than jacking the spring bucket up, and then putting the bolt through the lower mount. Especially when working on a car that’s on a lift. Great stuff man, much appreciated! 👌🏽

    From your video,I kinda understand the front adjustment - Preload first followed by height adjustment, and i can adjust the height independently without messing the preload
    But for the rear, it seemed like height adjustment first followed by turning the absorber to match the bolt, lastly rotating the absorber to achieve the preload.
    My question is, if I want to adjust my rear height again, I will need to make adjustments to my preload again as this is the last step?

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey K Y Lee,
      Yes you will have to adjust the preload if you change the ride height for the rear suspension. For the front, if you want to adjust the ride height, you do not need to adjust the preload.

      Your video - height adjustment/ lower the absorber to match the bolt/ Preload achieved by raising the absorber up
      Other BC videos - height adjustment/ preload by using a jack / either lower or raise absorber to match the bolt.

    Just a heads up, you adjust ride height with spring and the base is for tuning bump/rebound travel. This applies to both coil over & divorced designs.
    If you adjust height at the base you'll have the wheel colliding with the body work. You use it to set a limit for bump travel.
    If your spring is loose at your desired ride height, that's what helper springs are for. Spring pre-load is not a thing, just an outcome of height settings.

    Perhaps I am not understanding. On the rear divorce, why adjust the damper after adjusting ride height? You eventually have to adjust the damper for spring preload. Doesn't that defeat the previous step of adjusting the damper for ride height?

    You don't know how useful this video was saved me so much, first time doing anything like this and completely messed up installing the rear but hopefully now we are chilling

    Thanks for this video, very helpful. I have watched many of your videos on the 370z and after months of collecting parts and finally getting them on the car, I have to say thank you. Your videos have helped me out tremendously. I'm super stoked that my ride is set perfect and feeling good. loving my new coilovers. Much appreciated.

    Hey @milanmastracci - Question in regards to adjusting the rear divorced setup, so after changing the spring for ride height, I see some people undo the bottom bolt that holds the shock and spin it that way to align it with the control arm hole again, whereas you just undid the collar and spun it whilst it's bolted on. Do both ways achieve the same thing? I am thinking your way is much easier and no need to re-bolt things.

    Milan Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Jake and i at Eliminator Performance hope you got your snowblower in good running condition with all this drifting snow we are getting here in Port Colborne. Our neighbour just finished shovelling out his side door entry drift that was 7 feet high luck he could get out of his entry door.

      Merry Christmas and happy new years to you guys too! Yes thank you guys for the help. I was able to band air the shift fork for the mean time. I had a good 4 feet in front of my main entrance, and about 5 feet in front of my garage doors. Wasn't fun to clear lol

    I’m tired of seeing this misinformation spreading through the car community. It’s important to note that adjusting your coilover this way is a recipe for poor handling or a damaged fenders. You adjust shock lengths with the lower collar first, achieving a proper bump and droop sweep with the bump stop hitting before the tire hits your fender. Then Adjust height with the upper collars/spring perch collar. The spring doesn’t necessarily need to be captive and wont clunk if you don’t remove your sway bars. But it is recommended to get a helper spring if your height is too low for the spring to remain captive.
    Again…
    Lower collar = shock length
    Upper collars = ride height

    great video Milan thank you, i noticed that you linked the 06-11 skunk 2 camber arms but i did some research and they make the arms for the 12-15 as well, do the 8th gen arms really work on the 9th gen?

      Hey Juan, from my understanding, they're identical between the 8th and 9th gens

    How do I know if my back shock is in right height? Correct me if I'm wrong but the height of the car ajusts on the spring, and the shock height is soft/hard settings? 🤔

    Just a question why the others when adjusting the lowering of the Devorce suspension is only the spring and not the Strut, it was said in the video that when you adjust the spring, you also need to adjust the Strut

    When adjusting ride height in the rear, making the spring longer makes the car lower or compressing it shorter makes the car lower? Hope that makes sense

    Thank you for share this with us 😎 ! In my personal opinion i really prefer the old school suspension that Honda what did use before coilovers front and rear without the spring in the rear easy and simple !

      You and me both! It's insane how many different rear suspension designs there are, and how some are easier to work on than others! Ideally, multilink rear would be nice for these cars, especially since it would eliminate the heavy steel trailing arm, but oh well lol

    Nice video , I have the same coilover on a x5, but the rear tires are robbing with the fender when im driving and go over highway imperfections, should I raise the rear or should i just put more pressure to avoid too much damper in the rear? Thanks

    • @HafroSamurai
      @HafroSamurai 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, I'd just ditch the way that so many people and manufacturers get wrong. What I mean is that......
      A) The lower spring perch is actually what should be adjusted for ride height.
      B) The lonesome lower locking collar is actually what should be adjusted to dial in shock travel.
      C) You are likely rubbing because you haven't set your shock height to hit your bump stops before your tire rubs. There are some really good videos that cover how to do this.
      I'm still learning and far from an expert but I can tell that well over half the content on here on coilovers is incorrect. Mike Kojima with MotoIQ is phenomenal and explains a really easy way to adjust your dampers once you dial in your ride height. Also, depending on your desired ride height you may have to switch to different springs.
      I should mention that you of course can shorten your shock length but know that I'm doing so you are sacrificing shock travel. Hope this helps you in some way. I've been trying to dial in my godspeed/bracing/custom coilovers for the past 1.5 years with limited info/resources for my car. Good gods has it been an adventure and will eventually post my experiences on a couple forums in the future.
