You are the first pro painter I've ever heard mention (1) the hardners and which temperatures you should use them in and (2) the wait times between base coats and clear coats!! Thank you for that! Now I'm going to watch your video on how to set up the gun.

Orange peel is caused by not enough pressure to make the spray a mist. That's why factory paint jobs has orange peel to get more paint on the car by using a lower pressure to minimize the overspray.

Never really knew the difference between fast/medium/slow reducers. This is going to help me a lot. Also wasn't sure about wait times. And little details mean a lot. Like not using a tack rag between clear coats. I was going to. This video rocks. Nice to see cool people wanting to help others instead of trying to show off. You rock buddy. Going to check out that set up the gun vid now.

Orange peel is a fact of paint jobs but the things you mentioned definitely help keep it from being terrible

  • @starbattles1
    @starbattles1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

One suggestion: Sometimes it's because of temp change. (working in uncontrolled climate garage environment) Time don't stand still while spraying so you have to consider the temp when you start, and what will the temp be when you lay down the final coat. Also, end of the day temps, air temp might have cooled to desirable temp, but surface temp of car still warmer then you want. Just happened to me, orange pealed aprox. half my car. Some areas are good, some bad. Surface temp was not all the same on all panels. Recommendation: Spray in the morning while surface temp is low as possible. The air temp will warm as you work, but surface temps take longer to warm. I did a black car in the am and same clear, same mix, same temp, same spray, turned out awesome. This car I did in the evening when temps cooled to 70. But car was little warmer, surface took longer to cool, and ended up with more work to do now. LOL.

I enjoy learning am you speak with confidence because of you common sense guided by experience. My brother-in-law painted cars at home. He would use two different temperatures to reducer and never get in a hurry. He always told me that are the clear coat cures, cross-links into one gigantic molecule, the next coat would melt into it and bond the same way, but thicker. Shops, techs, managers are all about time. They watch the clock to start the next job & have a tendency to hurry it up. It’s subconscious and they are trained to think that way. A truck came into the dealer with 4 cars for us, but the top two where Rolls Royce, one was a two tone Black/Emerald Green the other a Silver Ghost. Not base coat-clear coat, but 27 hand rubbed coats of Lacquer. It was $3,000 extra for the two tone in 1976 dollars. About $18,000 in 2020 dollars. Thanks for the video!

Great video brother ! In the past I had trouble with orange peel resulting from a combination of smaller compressors, hvlp guns and improper technique. I was always able to wet sand and buff it out. My advice would be to stay away from hvlp guns, ensure enough air supply and dial in the gun properly for the material used. Everyone seems to be looking for the best gun to avoid peel, but I have sprayed clear flat with cheap guns and got peel with the best. HS clears will be more of a challenge than ms clears. 👍

Orange peel is basically you paints to thick, add reducer thin it down ! No expert by no means but took 4 years auto body in school ! When you pull the paint paddle out of the mixing cup /paint gun it should drip within 3 seconds that about fight ! 👍if I hadn't got a very good job at a steel mill, would have painted cars ! Good luck ! 👍 loved that stuff !

I'm in West Texas...and humidity NORMALLY isn't a problem (this year, it's been TERRIBLE so far)...10%, MAYBE, on average...it's the temps that will get you out here...110-115F, it's slow reducer, timed to the day (normally morning before 10-am)...orange peel isn't that bad, NORMALLY...one other thing, though...I have a dedicated compressor...and have not one, but TWO air driers on it! Why? DRY AIR is way more critical than atmospheric humidity...from my own experience. I change those things often, mine, I can dry the elements in a low-temp oven and re-use them, too...saves a TON! I can get orange peel down to where a good buffing compound at the end, and it will come out like glass! I can't imagine how guys in really high humidity areas are ever able to paint! (I'd probably have a couple of dehumidifiers running, CONSTANTLY)...

Slow reducers and activators allow the paint to self level and "flow". Many shops use faster chemicals for production not quality finishes. The slower the chemicals the longer the finish will last. The only downside to slow chemicals is you run a higher chance of getting paint runs if you apply the paint in heavy, wet coats. A skilled painter can get great off-the-gun finishes without the need to cut and buff, only de-nib and polish. An uncut finish will also last longer and require less detailing over the years.

Hi Mr Pharraway! Thank you for all the vids and tips .. great inspiration!
I’m painting the cowl cavity of my old 58 Chevy and it’s turn out great but later discovers a small pencil eraser size drip , . I guess it dripped from a corner of the masking tape .
Can I use the razor blade technique and sand with 1500?
But in worst case , after removing I’d like to just blend spot that area.
Now blending I would just add 50 percent reducer to left over paint?
It’s also single stage and metallic.
I’m not really worried about it being weird looking when dry cause it’s in the far side cowl cavity and will be covered with the cowl grille. But I feel like it’s not as perfect knowing there’s a drip ..
I know you’ve probably encountered these before.
What’s you best recommendation without having to redo the whole cowl cavity ?
Thanks again for you time ,
    Frank

always have a test panel like an old hood nearby to test your spray before you spray the real piece. blame it on the painter not the paint. the paint only does what you make it do

Thank you for explaining on reducers and activators, im planning on painting in my garage, and other than just throwing paint on a car I never thought of these additional supplies that I would need to achieve a great paint job. But how much would you know to add? Im in the Miami area and normal temperature here is between 80-95.

Thank You! I am tiring to spray a base coat with out orange peal. I found it showing up thorough the coats of clear and color. In this case, ALSA chrome, it shows everything from below. I just watched your film on reducers and that maybe part of it. I have a qt. of Medium and the temp. scale on the can say's below 85 degrees. I am just north of El Paso it gets to 85 before noon currently. Do I just start praying at 7 am or go buy more slow reducer? Jeff Stephan

I sprayed a single stage paint and the data sheet actually told me the dry times between coats. It was 1 hour in my case. Perhaps just read the data sheet?
