0:46 Can someone explain me why the laser hits Falco but goes through him anyway?
Here's what I believe happened.
Falco's laser is made up of four individual hitbubbles which are in turn made up of smaller circles. Normally they travel horizontally in a straight line until they hit their target. However, in this case, Zain powershielded the laser really close to Mango, causing the laser to fly back at Mango and hit him. When Falco shoots a laser, the laser graphic takes a few frames to extend into the full red line shape we are accustomed to seeing. During this period, not all of the hitbubbles of the laser exist yet. Only the one or two hitbubbles in the front of the laser exist, because they are generated earlier than the hitbubbles in the back of the laser. Because Zain was so close to Mango when he powershielded AND because Mango had just shot the laser not long ago AND because Mango was full drifting forward, his laser did not finish exiting his gun and therefore his laser could not extend to its full length by the time Zain had already powershielded. This means the hitbubbles are also not finished generating out of his gun either, as the 4 hitbubbles generate individually over the course of a few frames as the laser lengthens. Zain's powershield causes the game to register the entire laser (all 4 hitbubbles grouped together) as Zain's. Now, the game sends the laser back at Mango; however, we must keep in mind that the last laser hitbubble has not been fully generated yet. On the same frame the final laser hitbubble is generated, the game sends the entire laser (all 4 hitbubbles) back at Mango, causing him to be hit immediately. The red laser line graphic lags behind the actual hitbubbles as it comes back towards Mango; if you view frame by frame, you can actually see Mango get hit by something invisible (a hitbubble belonging to the powershielded laser) because the red laser graphic is lagging behind the actual hitbubbles. Why? Well whenever someone powershields a laser, visually, the laser isn't truly reflected straight off the shield. Rather, a laser originating from inside the powershielding player is sent back instead. The red laser line graphic then proceeds to pass through Mango because the game sees Mango as already having been hit by a laser. You know how when you shoot someone with a Falco laser, it's only the first hitbubble that touches them that deals damage and hitstun? Though Falco's laser is made of 4 individual hitbubbles, only 1 can come in contact with a player. Then the whole laser disappears because it'd be wrong for all 4 hitbubbles to collide with a player and deal 4 individual instances of knockback and hitstun. That's not how laser works. Anyway, the rest of the laser's hitbubbles and the red laser line graphic have no effect on Mango and appear to pass straight through him because he has already collided with one laser hitbubble, disabling the others from touching him. And the laser sails off towards the right blast zone and the game continues.
