New York City is loosing population still a great city the population decline in Detroit and Cleveland actually stabilized and is not as bad as it used to be. Many tech companies are leaving the west coast and the east coast and moving to Cleveland same thing for Detroit. Ford is actually building a electric car assembly plant in Detroit and ford is adding 20K jobs to Detroit that’s a huge boost and will really help out Detroit. And this pandemic is making people choose places like Detroit and Cleveland for the low cost of living and people are leaving cities like Los Angeles Portland and New York City. Do your research kid you know nothing about the country I bet you don’t even know what caused the decline of these once great cities in the first place. If you take a look at downtown Detroit from 2010 vs 2020 and it’s a HUGE improvement same thing with Cleveland. Really Portland Los Angeles and New York City are in huge trouble.

I've never experienced anything like seeing Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall. Don't get me wrong, I love Motown but my daughter is a violinist so I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to take her there. I live on Catawba Island but work in Toledo.
Im from Oregon but I've been to Cleveland twice in the last decade and actually really liked it. The architecture of the older downtown buildings has a "Gothic" feel to it.
Overall I like a lot of the dominant Architecture along the Great Lakes States. Plenty of modern stuff but a lot of it is old fashioned and maintained rather than remodeled. My home Town in Huntington has looked like it’s been stuck in the 90’s for decades.

I’ve lived in both cities. Now I’m in Cleveland. I will say Detroit was way more fun for me as far as night life and shopping/dining but I can’t speak for everyone. Cleveland has better site seeing for me out in the suburbs (where most people really live) beautiful parks and arts. If I would have to choose it would be Cleveland only because the cost of living and great suburbs to choose from that are very affordable and well kept. Not saying Detroit doesn’t have that but suburbs around Detroit can be pretty expensive (but well worth it). You can’t judge the two from this video. Travel to both, they both have a lot to offer.

I honestly feel bad for these cities Detroit had a population of 1.8 million people in its peak in 1950 while Cleveland had a population around 900k. I blame the politician for the destroying Detroit.
I’m from Cleveland. Live downtown, and work in the city, ive lived on the west coast and have lived in the south as well, and keep coming home. It’s not the prettiest and it’s not fancy but for the most part Cleveland people are inherently good, and just hard working people. I love it here!! It’s not terrible at all ❤️
i was born there, not raised. Was raised on a horse farm in Sacramento. i lived all over California. Was even stained there. i have lived in Cleveland twice. Last was 2001-2003 to assist my ailing, now late, grandfather. Overall, Cleveland is just okay in my opinion. That snow ❄️, man. i eventually dealt with it. In fact, after work, i would jog four miles home in it. But, i would rather do without that snow. Loved its culture and museums. Women are much better also. ESPECIALLY than a lot women in Las Vegas.

Venture farther than the "flats" and "ohio city" you may just change your opinion, I was just up there for family business and the divide between race and class has never been higher, your safe in your bubble I suppose, might do well to stick there.
Cleveland's population has gone down but the downtown population has increased dramatically over the past decades. Alot of new development in the downtown and its actually nice to walk around. I dont know about other parts of the city though
CLE has Improvided many areas, but East CLE remains the same (bad). The suburbs are growing faster than the city today since you know how us the lifestyle of city vs a nice house in the burbs.
When I came to Cleveland everyone have a least 4 kids.. there was children everywhere now the millennials are childless.. I'm sure no to many people left.. when they do they always comeback.. I don't know a single person who have left and don't come back I left 3 times and stay for good now for 26 years. Cleveland is easy ! Unfortunately Dogs are the new generation population
I lived in Cleveland in the early 2000s, my daughter was born in Cleveland in 2004. I like Cleveland but it has a long way to go. I haven't visited Detroit yet. The job market is improving in both cities especially with Amazon having multiple locations in both cities.

I've lived in the Cleveland area my whole life, so I'm a little biased. However, I think in order to experience Cleveland, and probably Detroit, is to have a local take you around. Everyone loves to shit on Cleveland, even the mayor who called us the butthole of the world, but I've learned over the years that the locals secretly hate on Cleveland so no one moves here and destroys this hidden gem of a city. I mean Cleveland has a phenomenal theatre scene, the local food and brewery scenes are thriving, there's a National Park just out of town and the Cleveland Metroparks make up the Emerald Necklace. I moved out of the area for several years during and after college, but having travelled coast to coast, there's something about Cleveland that just drew me back. I think it's the city experience but with friendly small town atmosphere. Anyone reading this who has ever been a Cleveland sceptic, I assure you that we're worth a visit!

I really thought we were going to get a Cleveland Pittsburgh video that would have the comment section very busy. Being a life long Clevelander and never being to Detroit I have heard more arguements with Pittsburgh or Columbus.
Lived in Cleveland (and the suburbs) my whole life, am old enough to have witnessed the city's decline and struggle to rise again. There is no denying the huge social and economic challenges we face, but we don't have earthquakes (an occasional tremblor originating under the lake), we don't get hurricanes or forest fires......some winter snow, but not usually terrible. Our sports teams have not been overwhelmingly good, but the fans are amazingly loyal and vocal. If you get sick, Cleveland is a good place to be with the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals right here. We have amazing theater district.....don't need to go to New York, a world famous orchestra and art museum......plus the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We might be short on glamour, but folks here are friendly and generous. I've been other places, but for me, there's no place like home !
I love Cleveland & I love the greater Cleveland area, there's is a lot to do there & I love all the parks & trees surrounding the suburbs of Cleveland. So the next time anyone tells you Cleveland sucks, just know that it doesn't & the town & area are only getting better.

As an Indianapolis native (I don't live there anymore), I appreciated the overall message in this video. Both Detroit and Cleveland are fine cities with fascinating histories. I wish people felt less compelled to follow a crowd and automatically regurgitate stereotypes about places, but instead thought for themselves. Although I prefer warmer climates to call home, Detroit and Cleveland both seem like lovely places to visit.
A couple of things you missed about Detroit: Belle Isle, a wonderful Michigan State Park in the middle of the Detroit River, Detroit's version of Central Park NYC. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a world-class art museum. Wayne State University brings all the benefits of being a college town. And Detroit is just a couple of short hours from the beautiful land of lakes and forests known as Northern Michigan (5 hours from the Mackinac Bridge). Drive 2 hours in any direction from Cleveland and you either get corn or Youngstown.

I've lived in both cities. Each one is pretty amazing in its own way. It's broken my heart to see what's happened to them. I'm really glad that this video incorporates some positive things that are happening for each one.
You say that Detroit has an arguably better music scene than Cleveland, but fail to mention the Cleveland Orchestra which is part of the "Big 5" and currently ranked 7th in the WORLD (2nd in the USA with Chicago Symphony ranked 1st). We also have Playhouse Square which is the second largest performing arts center in the US outside of New York City! I love living in Cleveland and I love visiting Detroit!
I was born in Cleveland and lived there until I was 9, in '98, at which point I moved to Georgia and have been here since. I was too young to gauge Cleveland's quality relative to anywhere else, lacking a lot of other points of reference, but my house and yard there were small and cramped, and I certainly appreciated the bigger place we upgraded to in Georgia, and the more rural surroundings. I definitely have some happy memories of the city, though. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Sea World Cleveland were two of my favorite places in the world as a kid, and I spent a lot of time in the Rocky River Reservation, one of the Metroparks, especially its nature center. I remember the natural history museum being nice, too. I've made a few short trips back to Cleveland to visit family, most recently in 2013, and I've become steadily more aware of how run down and... not great... the place is, and am not in any hurry to live there again. Even the zoo didn't impress on the last visit, and of course Sea World is long gone. The Rocky River Reservation is still very nice, though, and its nature center had been totally renovated since I was a kid, I'd say it's worth a visit. I need to get back up there and visit the Cleveland Aquarium at some point. Anyway, I'm glad to know Cleveland is in the process of improving, and that Progressive Field is no longer haunted by sadness.
Cleveland went to hell in the 2000s. I used to go to SeaWorld and Geauga Lake a lot as a kid...if only Six Flags didn't buy the park and ruin it. I can't speak on the zoo but they've made improvements in the gentrification zones of the city. Plus the region's housing market finally stabilized and incomes started slowly growing again.
I've been to the new aquarium many a time. Save your money not worth. Take the time to visit the Cleveland Art museum instead, its free and consistently ranked one of the best in the nation

I went to the art museum once when I was about five; I was way too young to appreciate art, so all I remember is that I knocked over a big metal guard rail (not my fault, I hardly touched it! It was just really badly balanced on its supports!). It made the loudest, most over-the-top crash you've ever heard, and just echoed through the whole building. A whole squad of security guards came charging in with their guns drawn, though they calmed right down when they realized what happened. We didn't get into any trouble or anything, but we left right away just to be safe.

Cleveland has a rapid transit line and also two other light rail lines. The rapid transit line is the red line I think and it goes to the airport and goes downtown and out to the east side period and they have a blue line and a green line rapid Transit line that serves the Rock and roll Hall of Fame the museum campus and then they go out to Shaker heights and some other area. They also have the terminal tower.
Both were great cities that were devastated by manufacturing loss and white flight to suburbs. Live in Cleveland but also just outside Detroit, which I go back to often. Been all over the country and these remain two of my favorite places! You can have those sparkly, growth cities of the south and southwest.Plus we have the best accents! Basically the same as the accent associated with Chicago since it is basically a Great Lakes region accent that can be heard along the shorelines in the industrial cities from Buffalo to Milwaukee.

so i grew up in the Cleveland area and now live 30 minutes south of Detroit. I LOVE Cleveland. well the cleveland area. so much to offer. it gets a bad rap but really surprises people when they visit. 5 star chef run restuaruants. musuems and music. sports. and the gorgeous view of the lake. Detroit is also a really nice city in the downtown area. great various cultural resturaunts. the monorail to get around easily. lors of gorgeous architecture and a lot of art. I am loving living in Michigan. Much of michigan has wonderful nature. Michigan also is o a state with one of the most waterfront properties. i actually live on an island and have nearby one of the nations protected marshlands and a park that is one of the stops for many migatory birds. we also have quite a large Bald Eagle population. Weekends you see all types of boats on the river. from small fishing boats, small and very large personal watercrafts and frieghters. The midwest gives you the most for your money. There are oppoutinities for trades and many non college jobs can be successful if you have a good blue collar work ethic. it is a well kept secret how good life can be and we kinda like it that way.
As a native Metro Detroiter, I enjoyed this video! You did not mention that both NFL teams are the only two teams to go winless in a season (Detroit in 2008 and Cleveland in 2017). What makes Detroit unique is how close it is to Canada-the tunnel to Canada nor the Gordie Howe Bridge were not mentioned. (The Gordie Howe Bridge is set to open in 2024. The Ambassador Bridge is the current bridge that connects Detroit and Canada.) Detroit is really developing and becoming a very hot market. Most people I meet when I travel only hear the bad things, such as crime and poverty. Don’t quote me, but I believe in 1929 Detroit was the fastest growing city in the world. Also, the Michigan Central Station was not mentioned. All in all, I love this channel, these videos remind me of my 9th grade US History teacher who also taught my US Government class in the 11th grade. This is one of my favorite channels on TH-cam!

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with the horrible Detroit rush hour commutes for a while as I've been working from home, but I'll be looking forward to that (not) once I can return to the office. Detroit isn't perfect, but it is great to see the city make a comeback. There are a lot of great parks and restaurants in downtown as well as in Midtown and Corktown. Wish you had talked about the cultural attractions in both cities. Both have arts and culture that are much more respected and influential than their populations would normally create partially as a relic of their past status. The orchestras, museums, and arts culture in both have been incredibly tenacious and resilient through the economic hardships that the cities have endured and are part of what give both cities so much life.
I can say that myself. San Francisco you’ll pay $4000 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. In San Diego you’ll only pay $3000. 😂 But all kidding aside, San Diego has much nicer and more down-to-Earth people, not a bunch of superficial snobs like LA and The Bay Area.
As a Canadian and frequent visitor to both cities in the past, I'm quite fond of both of them. Cleveland and Detroit are about 4 hours from Toronto and both have good food, music and great people.

Cleveland is an awesome city! I also think Detroit is pretty cool. They have their problems, but they also have great food, great art districts. Cleveland has great theatre and the finest symphony in the world!
Cute video. Only thing I’d say differently is that Detroit didn’t really steal the auto industry they’re the ones that started it. Henry Ford model t was made in Detroit and built the first auto plant there. Detroit has always been the hub of the auto industry. Often referred to as putting the world on wheels. Cleveland’s auto industry came after Detroit started it. Just like Flint later became an auto industrial city
I live in Cleveland. And I lived in a Detroit suburb (Waterford) for about 3 years in the 90s. I love both cities. But Cleveland is my hometown, and so I am a bit bias. Cleveland's good and bad points. Starting with the good. Cleveland is a very cultural city, which most people around the country aren't aware of. We have a world renowned orchestra, The Cleveland Symphony. In the performing arts, we have more theater seats for Broadway shows, than anywhere else in the world bèsides Broadway itself. We have an enormous art museum, which was a gift to the city by Rockafeller, a one time Cleveland resident. We have beautiful sunsets on Lake Erie. And we have world renowned health care, with the Cleveland Clinic. The cost of living is low. And we have a great system of beautiful parks which surround the city. Locals call it the Emerald Necklace. Cleveland Metroparks is the proper name. On the bad end. We do have more than our fair share of crime. Unfortunately Cleveland is considered the most dangerous big city in Ohio. Our sports teams have struggled to win championships. But finally the Cavs won the NBA title in 2016. Over 50 years since a Cleveland team won a championship game. Although our Browns are showing great potential after 21 years since we became the reborn Browns. The city has a lot of blighted areas. Our public schools are rated as some of the worst in the country. Although individual schools within the system vary. We sometimes suffer through brutal winters. And our politicians are the worst. With the exception of a good council rep here and there. Detroit. To me, Detroit looked and felt like a much scarier place than Cleveland's toughest areas. And that's saying something. Corktown seems to be up and coming. I loved the Motown museum and the Henry Ford Museum. The Red Wings have a huge fan base in Detroit, and they are among the best in the NHL. The Detroit Zoo is nice, and has lots of exhibits. The Woodward Ave cruise is always a great thing to see. The best and most beautiful classic cars cruising the main drag. The winters in Detroit do seem colder , but less snow is correct. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to visit the art museum in Detroit. Nor have I ever heard their orchestra play. But the Fox Theater in Downtown Detroit is huge and beautiful. And I am so happy to see Ford Field and Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit. People having to drive all the way to Pontiac for a Lions game has to suck. If you live down river and have tickets to a game, you're almost tempted to give them away for the 50 mile drive to the Silverdome. The Casinos downtown are cool. My favorite is the Motown. So that pretty much sums up my experience with both cities. I think both cities deserve respect in the sense that they were two of the nation's largest cities for many years. When towns like Houston and Phoenix were just one horse towns. And they were and to some degree are, industrial giants.

Also I can say for sure Cleveland and probably Detroit are very segregated. Cleveland's west side is predominantly white while the east side is in many parts exclusively black.

Down by w25th, fulton, clark area is heavily Spanish a lot of Puerto Ricans etc. Up 25th in ohio city and tremont you got ur hipster yuppie inner city area. Black mixed in all areas. But yeah east Cleveland basically all black and has the worst areas in the city.

Here's one left out terrible fun fact Belle Isle is a island downtown in Detroit you have to cross a bridge to get to, its like a huge park family friendly fun place with multiple parks, driving range, club house, police station, the infamous giant slide, and zoo, the sad thing about it now is that its sinking rather quickly now starting with the part we called "The Strip" its definitely not the same but as you said its under ton and tons of new development in fact downtown Detroit looks so good now its unrecognizable it is now a tourist attraction in my opinion.
I'm a lifelong Detroiter, and that song at beginning is hilarious. I laughed until I was almost crying 🤣🤣🤣. I knew both cities had alot of similarities because we're both rust belt cities with alot of the same social problems. Ironically, most of us in Detroit have relatives in Cleveland and vice-versa. I'm a life long Metro Detroiter and I married a woman whose mom and sister and nephew and stepdad live in Cleveland. I love both cities, they are both charming in their own ways. Downtown Cleveland is awesome, with Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage Arena next to each other. The baseball stadium is just awesome the Cavs home arena is nice. Then a little more east in downtown Cleveland is First Energy Stadium and it looks beautiful from the outside and it's nice inside too. Then next door is The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and that looks beautiful too. The inside is phenomenal! I always enjoy when we visit her family cuz it's always fun. I try to get to a few Indian games a year, and try to see the Tigers there once a year. Downtown Detroit is pretty awesome now. There is no shortage of things to do. Comerica Park and Ford Field are next door to each other and it looks beautiful. And a quarter mile up the street is the best arena in sports. Little Cesar's Arena is phenomenal a lot of it is built in ground. So when you drive up to it, it looks like a very cool building but if you didn't know better you might not think it's arena. Inside LCA is state of the art. In the back of the Arena there is another ice rink and that's the Redwings training facility. So if the Pistons are playing a home game or if there is a concert, the Redwings can still train at the arena. LCA is one of few hockey/basketball arenas that have 2 concourses one in the upper bowl and one in the lower bowl, and this makes it so much easier to get around with a sellout crowd. Also Downtown Detroit has 3 casinos with hotels and if that isn't enough drive 5 minutes away under the tunnel to Windsor Ontario and they have a Cesar's casino and hotel and a little performance arena inside. I give a slight edge to Detroit but Cleveland is a close 2nd. I forgot to mention that Cleveland has a downtown casino, and about 15 to 20 minutes away in Northfield they have Northfield Downs a racetrack and a casino in one, a Racing. Both towns are worth a long weekend trip.
Never been to Detroit but I’m considering moving to Cleveland in the next few years. My partner gets care at the Cleveland clinic. We’ve enjoyed our time there and houses there are half as expensive as they are in St. Paul, MN.

Cleveland resident - Both towns have great art museums. The fires on the Cuyahoga have been caused by rafts of greasy flotsam, which is bad enough, but it was not the water itself that caught fire. Up until the late 1960's the area that is now the Canalways Metroparks was an industrial boneyard and chemical dumping ground. Our then mayor Carl Stokes and Senator Lewis Stokes and others secured funding to clean it up and reclaim the land. Today it is a jewel filled with wildlife and I have seen coyote, bald eagles, snapping turtles, great blue herons and mink on my walks in that park which is in the middle of inner city neighborhoods.
Cleveland is more compact and walkable than Detroit, with fewer people and less traffic and MUCH more public transit besides regular city buses. Plus, the Cleveland Orchestra is among the Big Five ensembles, alongside those of Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston (though that concept is somewhat dated by now), while the Detroit Symphony falls just short of that level of prestige.
@@yodorob Both cities have their great points, ones we prefer to dwell on! In my lifetime (64 years), both cities have taken tremendous hits in population and wealth, as well as industry, but both are still thriving in many other ways.
I live in Cleveland and I have visited Detroit a few times and I definitely rock with the music scene (Doughboys, Peezy, Vezzo, Babyface Ray, Etc.) let me just say we are the two toughest Midwest City out there!
My favorite nickname of Cleveland is "Sixth City." As a review not bad. Though I wish you would have mentioned that the Cuyahoga River has actually become a case study for river rehabilitation around the world, it's recovery has been that great. Of course being from Cleveland, I must say it's better. And xyla moved away, so I don't like her anymore haha.

The Cleveland Browns won 1 game over the course of 2 years and the city threw them a parade. You can't put down a city with that high of loyalty.
They had a preseason champs parade! Ironically both teams (Browns and Lions) had zero win seasons. Of course, as luck would have it. In both years, the teams were undefeated in the preseason.
Cleveland's orchestra is very, very good; it's one of the Big Five in the US and no slouch on the world stage. The arts in general are solid here too.

Detroit Symphony is also phenomenal. Comparing these two cities and not mentioning their orchestras at all is a huge oversight.

New York City is loosing population still a great city the population decline in Detroit and Cleveland actually stabilized and is not as bad as it used to be. Many tech companies are leaving the west coast and the east coast and moving to Cleveland same thing for Detroit. Ford is actually building a electric car assembly plant in Detroit and ford is adding 20K jobs to Detroit that’s a huge boost and will really help out Detroit. And this pandemic is making people choose places like Detroit and Cleveland for the low cost of living and people are leaving cities like Los Angeles Portland and New York City. Do your research kid you know nothing about the country I bet you don’t even know what caused the decline of these once great cities in the first place. If you take a look at downtown Detroit from 2010 vs 2020 and it’s a HUGE improvement same thing with Cleveland. Really Portland Los Angeles and New York City are in huge trouble.

I've never experienced anything like seeing Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall. Don't get me wrong, I love Motown but my daughter is a violinist so I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to take her there. I live on Catawba Island but work in Toledo.

Im from Oregon but I've been to Cleveland twice in the last decade and actually really liked it. The architecture of the older downtown buildings has a "Gothic" feel to it.
Overall I like a lot of the dominant Architecture along the Great Lakes States. Plenty of modern stuff but a lot of it is old fashioned and maintained rather than remodeled. My home Town in Huntington has looked like it’s been stuck in the 90’s for decades.
Detroit has some gothic style churches, and also has some pretty cool art deco style buildings. Look up Albert Kahn for some more specifics.

I am from Cleveland and very proud, a few things that you missed, one of the best hospitals in the world, a top orchestra and art museum. We also have one of the wealthiest communities in the country and it has been a very long time since we were a mistake on the lake. Also don’t forget the show Hot in Cleveland!

I’ve lived in both cities. Now I’m in Cleveland. I will say Detroit was way more fun for me as far as night life and shopping/dining but I can’t speak for everyone. Cleveland has better site seeing for me out in the suburbs (where most people really live) beautiful parks and arts. If I would have to choose it would be Cleveland only because the cost of living and great suburbs to choose from that are very affordable and well kept. Not saying Detroit doesn’t have that but suburbs around Detroit can be pretty expensive (but well worth it). You can’t judge the two from this video. Travel to both, they both have a lot to offer.

I’m from Cleveland. Live downtown, and work in the city, ive lived on the west coast and have lived in the south as well, and keep coming home. It’s not the prettiest and it’s not fancy but for the most part Cleveland people are inherently good, and just hard working people. I love it here!! It’s not terrible at all ❤️
I would argue University Circle and Playhouse Square are pretty fancy.

i was born there, not raised. Was raised on a horse farm in Sacramento. i lived all over California. Was even stained there.
i have lived in Cleveland twice. Last was 2001-2003 to assist my ailing, now late, grandfather. Overall, Cleveland is just okay in my opinion.
That snow ❄️, man. i eventually dealt with it. In fact, after work, i would jog four miles home in it. But, i would rather do without that snow. Loved its culture and museums. Women are much better also. ESPECIALLY than a lot women in Las Vegas.
I was Born in deconis hospital in 1982,, There is a whole city named Cleveland, not just downtown. Venture farther than the "flats" and "ohio city" you may just change your opinion, I was just up there for family business and the divide between race and class has never been higher, your safe in your bubble I suppose, might do well to stick there.
Cleveland's population has gone down but the downtown population has increased dramatically over the past decades. Alot of new development in the downtown and its actually nice to walk around. I dont know about other parts of the city though
CLE has Improvided many areas, but East CLE remains the same (bad). The suburbs are growing faster than the city today since you know how us the lifestyle of city vs a nice house in the burbs.

I lived in Cleveland in the early 2000s, my daughter was born in Cleveland in 2004. I like Cleveland but it has a long way to go. I haven't visited Detroit yet. The job market is improving in both cities especially with Amazon having multiple locations in both cities.

I've lived in the Cleveland area my whole life, so I'm a little biased. However, I think in order to experience Cleveland, and probably Detroit, is to have a local take you around. Everyone loves to shit on Cleveland, even the mayor who called us the butthole of the world, but I've learned over the years that the locals secretly hate on Cleveland so no one moves here and destroys this hidden gem of a city. I mean Cleveland has a phenomenal theatre scene, the local food and brewery scenes are thriving, there's a National Park just out of town and the Cleveland Metroparks make up the Emerald Necklace. I moved out of the area for several years during and after college, but having travelled coast to coast, there's something about Cleveland that just drew me back. I think it's the city experience but with friendly small town atmosphere. Anyone reading this who has ever been a Cleveland sceptic, I assure you that we're worth a visit!

I was visiting Cleveland as a tourist (I'm from Puerto Rico) and I don't know if i'm crazy or not but I'm in love with Cleveland goddd Idk why but it has everything, its like having a great city, with everything in it and then a beautiful metropark with lot of nature. Lived in Cleveland (and the suburbs) my whole life, am old enough to have witnessed the city's decline and struggle to rise again. There is no denying the huge social and economic challenges we face, but we don't have earthquakes (an occasional tremblor originating under the lake), we don't get hurricanes or forest fires......some winter snow, but not usually terrible. Our sports teams have not been overwhelmingly good, but the fans are amazingly loyal and vocal. If you get sick, Cleveland is a good place to be with the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals right here. We have amazing theater district.....don't need to go to New York, a world famous orchestra and art museum......plus the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We might be short on glamour, but folks here are friendly and generous. I've been other places, but for me, there's no place like home !

As an Indianapolis native (I don't live there anymore), I appreciated the overall message in this video. Both Detroit and Cleveland are fine cities with fascinating histories. I wish people felt less compelled to follow a crowd and automatically regurgitate stereotypes about places, but instead thought for themselves. Although I prefer warmer climates to call home, Detroit and Cleveland both seem like lovely places to visit.
A couple of things you missed about Detroit: Belle Isle, a wonderful Michigan State Park in the middle of the Detroit River, Detroit's version of Central Park NYC. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a world-class art museum. Wayne State University brings all the benefits of being a college town. And Detroit is just a couple of short hours from the beautiful land of lakes and forests known as Northern Michigan (5 hours from the Mackinac Bridge). Drive 2 hours in any direction from Cleveland and you either get corn or Youngstown.

You say that Detroit has an arguably better music scene than Cleveland, but fail to mention the Cleveland Orchestra which is part of the "Big 5" and currently ranked 7th in the WORLD (2nd in the USA with Chicago Symphony ranked 1st). We also have Playhouse Square which is the second largest performing arts center in the US outside of New York City!

I was born in Cleveland and lived there until I was 9, in '98, at which point I moved to Georgia and have been here since. I was too young to gauge Cleveland's quality relative to anywhere else, lacking a lot of other points of reference, but my house and yard there were small and cramped, and I certainly appreciated the bigger place we upgraded to in Georgia, and the more rural surroundings. I definitely have some happy memories of the city, though. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Sea World Cleveland were two of my favorite places in the world as a kid, and I spent a lot of time in the Rocky River Reservation, one of the Metroparks, especially its nature center. I remember the natural history museum being nice, too.
I've made a few short trips back to Cleveland to visit family, most recently in 2013, and I've become steadily more aware of how run down and... not great... the place is, and am not in any hurry to live there again. Even the zoo didn't impress on the last visit, and of course Sea World is long gone. The Rocky River Reservation is still very nice, though, and its nature center had been totally renovated since I was a kid, I'd say it's worth a visit. I need to get back up there and visit the Cleveland Aquarium at some point.
Anyway, I'm glad to know Cleveland is in the process of improving, and that Progressive Field is no longer haunted by sadness.
Thanks for sharing all that. The city still has a ways to go, but at least it's on the up and up.
Cleveland went to hell in the 2000s. I used to go to SeaWorld and Geauga Lake a lot as a kid...if only Six Flags didn't buy the park and ruin it. I can't speak on the zoo but they've made improvements in the gentrification zones of the city. Plus the region's housing market finally stabilized and incomes started slowly growing again.
I've been to the new aquarium many a time. Save your money not worth. Take the time to visit the Cleveland Art museum instead, its free and consistently ranked one of the best in the nation

I went to the art museum once when I was about five; I was way too young to appreciate art, so all I remember is that I knocked over a big metal guard rail (not my fault, I hardly touched it! It was just really badly balanced on its supports!). It made the loudest, most over-the-top crash you've ever heard, and just echoed through the whole building. A whole squad of security guards came charging in with their guns drawn, though they calmed right down when they realized what happened. We didn't get into any trouble or anything, but we left right away just to be safe.

Cleveland has a rapid transit line and also two other light rail lines. The rapid transit line is the red line I think and it goes to the airport and goes downtown and out to the east side period and they have a blue line and a green line rapid Transit line that serves the Rock and roll Hall of Fame the museum campus and then they go out to Shaker heights and some other area. They also have the terminal tower.
Both were great cities that were devastated by manufacturing loss and white flight to suburbs. Live in Cleveland but also just outside Detroit, which I go back to often. Been all over the country and these remain two of my favorite places! You can have those sparkly, growth cities of the south and southwest.Plus we have the best accents! Basically the same as the accent associated with Chicago since it is basically a Great Lakes region accent that can be heard along the shorelines in the industrial cities from Buffalo to Milwaukee.

so i grew up in the Cleveland area and now live 30 minutes south of Detroit. I LOVE Cleveland. well the cleveland area. so much to offer. it gets a bad rap but really surprises people when they visit. 5 star chef run restuaruants. musuems and music. sports. and the gorgeous view of the lake. Detroit is also a really nice city in the downtown area. great various cultural resturaunts. the monorail to get around easily. lors of gorgeous architecture and a lot of art. I am loving living in Michigan. Much of michigan has wonderful nature. Michigan also is o a state with one of the most waterfront properties. i actually live on an island and have nearby one of the nations protected marshlands and a park that is one of the stops for many migatory birds. we also have quite a large Bald Eagle population. Weekends you see all types of boats on the river. from small fishing boats, small and very large personal watercrafts and frieghters. The midwest gives you the most for your money. There are oppoutinities for trades and many non college jobs can be successful if you have a good blue collar work ethic. it is a well kept secret how good life can be and we kinda like it that way.

As a native Metro Detroiter, I enjoyed this video! You did not mention that both NFL teams are the only two teams to go winless in a season (Detroit in 2008 and Cleveland in 2017). What makes Detroit unique is how close it is to Canada-the tunnel to Canada nor the Gordie Howe Bridge were not mentioned. (The Gordie Howe Bridge is set to open in 2024. The Ambassador Bridge is the current bridge that connects Detroit and Canada.) Detroit is really developing and becoming a very hot market. Most people I meet when I travel only hear the bad things, such as crime and poverty. Don’t quote me, but I believe in 1929 Detroit was the fastest growing city in the world. Also, the Michigan Central Station was not mentioned. All in all, I love this channel, these videos remind me of my 9th grade US History teacher who also taught my US Government class in the 11th grade. This is one of my favorite channels on TH-cam!

Both have arts and culture that are much more respected and influential than their populations would normally create partially as a relic of their past status. The orchestras, museums, and arts culture in both have been incredibly tenacious and resilient through the economic hardships that the cities have endured and are part of what give both cities so much life.

Cleveland is an awesome city! I also think Detroit is pretty cool. They have their problems, but they also have great food, great art districts. Cleveland has great theatre and the finest symphony in the world!
Cute video. Only thing I’d say differently is that Detroit didn’t really steal the auto industry they’re the ones that started it. Henry Ford model t was made in Detroit and built the first auto plant there. Detroit has always been the hub of the auto industry. Often referred to as putting the world on wheels. Cleveland’s auto industry came after Detroit started it. Just like Flint later became an auto industrial city
I live in Cleveland. And I lived in a Detroit suburb (Waterford) for about 3 years in the 90s. I love both cities. But Cleveland is my hometown, and so I am a bit bias. Cleveland's good and bad points. Starting with the good. Cleveland is a very cultural city, which most people around the country aren't aware of. We have a world renowned orchestra, The Cleveland Symphony. In the performing arts, we have more theater seats for Broadway shows, than anywhere else in the world bèsides Broadway itself. We have an enormous art museum, which was a gift to the city by Rockafeller, a one time Cleveland resident. We have beautiful sunsets on Lake Erie. And we have world renowned health care, with the Cleveland Clinic. The cost of living is low. And we have a great system of beautiful parks which surround the city. Locals call it the Emerald Necklace. Cleveland Metroparks is the proper name. On the bad end. We do have more than our fair share of crime. Unfortunately Cleveland is considered the most dangerous big city in Ohio. Our sports teams have struggled to win championships. But finally the Cavs won the NBA title in 2016. Over 50 years since a Cleveland team won a championship game. Although our Browns are showing great potential after 21 years since we became the reborn Browns. The city has a lot of blighted areas. Our public schools are rated as some of the worst in the country. Although individual schools within the system vary. We sometimes suffer through brutal winters. And our politicians are the worst. With the exception of a good council rep here and there.
Detroit. To me, Detroit looked and felt like a much scarier place than Cleveland's toughest areas. And that's saying something. Corktown seems to be up and coming. I loved the Motown museum and the Henry Ford Museum. The Red Wings have a huge fan base in Detroit, and they are among the best in the NHL. The Detroit Zoo is nice, and has lots of exhibits. The Woodward Ave cruise is always a great thing to see. The best and most beautiful classic cars cruising the main drag. The winters in Detroit do seem colder , but less snow is correct. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to visit the art museum in Detroit. Nor have I ever heard their orchestra play. But the Fox Theater in Downtown Detroit is huge and beautiful. And I am so happy to see Ford Field and Comerica Park in Downtown Detroit. People having to drive all the way to Pontiac for a Lions game has to suck. If you live down river and have tickets to a game, you're almost tempted to give them away for the 50 mile drive to the Silverdome. The Casinos downtown are cool. My favorite is the Motown. So that pretty much sums up my experience with both cities. I think both cities deserve respect in the sense that they were two of the nation's largest cities for many years. When towns like Houston and Phoenix were just one horse towns. And they were and to some degree are, industrial giants.

Also I can say for sure Cleveland and probably Detroit are very segregated. Cleveland's west side is predominantly white while the east side is in many parts exclusively black.

Down by w25th, fulton, clark area is heavily Spanish a lot of Puerto Ricans etc. Up 25th in ohio city and tremont you got ur hipster yuppie inner city area. Black mixed in all areas. But yeah east Cleveland basically all black and has the worst areas in the city.

Here's one left out terrible fun fact Belle Isle is a island downtown in Detroit you have to cross a bridge to get to, its like a huge park family friendly fun place with multiple parks, driving range, club house, police station, the infamous giant slide, and zoo, the sad thing about it now is that its sinking rather quickly now starting with the part we called "The Strip" its definitely not the same but as you said its under ton and tons of new development in fact downtown Detroit looks so good now its unrecognizable it is now a tourist attraction in my opinion.
I'm a lifelong Detroiter, and that song at beginning is hilarious. I laughed until I was almost crying 🤣🤣🤣. I knew both cities had alot of similarities because we're both rust belt cities with alot of the same social problems. Ironically, most of us in Detroit have relatives in Cleveland and vice-versa. I know this video is a year old but it’s worth mentioning the food scene and beer scene on the westside of Cleveland are awesome.
I'm a life long Metro Detroiter and I married a woman whose mom and sister and nephew and stepdad live in Cleveland. I love both cities, they are both charming in their own ways. Downtown Cleveland is awesome, with Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage Arena next to each other. The baseball stadium is just awesome the Cavs home arena is nice. Then a little more east in downtown Cleveland is First Energy Stadium and it looks beautiful from the outside and it's nice inside too. Then next door is The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and that looks beautiful too. The inside is phenomenal! I always enjoy when we visit her family cuz it's always fun. I try to get to a few Indian games a year, and try to see the Tigers there once a year. Downtown Detroit is pretty awesome now. There is no shortage of things to do. Comerica Park and Ford Field are next door to each other and it looks beautiful. And a quarter mile up the street is the best arena in sports. Little Cesar's Arena is phenomenal a lot of it is built in ground. So when you drive up to it, it looks like a very cool building but if you didn't know better you might not think it's arena. Inside LCA is state of the art. In the back of the Arena there is another ice rink and that's the Redwings training facility. So if the Pistons are playing a home game or if there is a concert, the Redwings can still train at the arena. LCA is one of few hockey/basketball arenas that have 2 concourses one in the upper bowl and one in the lower bowl, and this makes it so much easier to get around with a sellout crowd. Also Downtown Detroit has 3 casinos with hotels and if that isn't enough drive 5 minutes away under the tunnel to Windsor Ontario and they have a Cesar's casino and hotel and a little performance arena inside. I give a slight edge to Detroit but Cleveland is a close 2nd. I forgot to mention that Cleveland has a downtown casino, and about 15 to 20 minutes away in Northfield they have Northfield Downs a racetrack and a casino in one, a Racing. Both towns are worth a long weekend trip.

Cleveland resident - Both towns have great art museums. The fires on the Cuyahoga have been caused by rafts of greasy flotsam, which is bad enough, but it was not the water itself that caught fire. Up until the late 1960's the area that is now the Canalways Metroparks was an industrial boneyard and chemical dumping ground. Our then mayor Carl Stokes and Senator Lewis Stokes and others secured funding to clean it up and reclaim the land. Today it is a jewel filled with wildlife and I have seen coyote, bald eagles, snapping turtles, great blue herons and mink on my walks in that park which is in the middle of inner city neighborhoods.
As an Ohioan: Cleveland > than Detroit! 😉

Cleveland is more compact and walkable than Detroit, with fewer people and less traffic and MUCH more public transit besides regular city buses. Plus, the Cleveland Orchestra is among the Big Five ensembles, alongside those of Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston (though that concept is somewhat dated by now), while the Detroit Symphony falls just short of that level of prestige.
@@yodorob Both cities have their great points, ones we prefer to dwell on! In my lifetime (64 years), both cities have taken tremendous hits in population and wealth, as well as industry, but both are still thriving in many other ways.
Cleveland has heavy and light rail. You can take a train from the airport to downtown, with streetcars still running in the, um, streetcar suburbs.
The Health line (Bus-rapidtransit BRT) is a streetcar. And proven successful for a lot less money

I live in Cleveland and I have visited Detroit a few times and I definitely rock with the music scene (Doughboys, Peezy, Vezzo, Babyface Ray, Etc.) let me just say we are the two toughest Midwest City out there!
My favorite nickname of Cleveland is "Sixth City." As a review not bad. Though I wish you would have mentioned that the Cuyahoga River has actually become a case study for river rehabilitation around the world, it's recovery has been that great.
Of course being from Cleveland, I must say it's better. And xyla moved away, so I don't like her anymore haha.
