    California and Texas
The Golden State and The Lone Star State, and there are important reasons why the two have those nicknames. More on that later.
Anyway, the two big ones. Sure, Alaska is quite a bit bigger than both of them in terms of actual size, but both have a higher population than any other state in these United States. California has the highest population, and has around 10 million more people than Texas. (C- 39.9 million, T- 29.9 million)
Still, Texas is one of the fastest growing states in the country.
And more folks are moving to the two than most other states. The channel The World According to Briggs has just released a video going over how and why so many have moved to California and Texas. Be sure to check it out when you’re done watching this one.
While many Texans have moved to California in recent years, more Californians have moved to Texas than any other state. And while you could fit more than two Texases into Alaska, you can almost fit two Californias into Texas. How big is Texas? El Paso, Texas is closer to San Diego, California, than it is to Houston, Texas.. How big is Texas? There’s a ranch there bigger than the state of Rhode Island. Ok, I’ll stop the how big is Texas stuff.
Being the two states with the most people and the two biggest economies, both heavily influence the rest of the country, and I’ve noticed the trash talking between the two has only gotten worse recently. However, based on my research, it seems to be mostly Texans talking trash on all those Californians moving to their beloved state. Yeah, even the Texas governor has been in on the trash talking.
But perhaps Texas has more in common with California than most would assume.
First of all, both are so big they are hard to stereotype, even though I’d argue the two are more stereotyped than any other states. East Texas has more in common with Louisiana than El Paso, and El Paso arguably has more in common with New Mexico than East Texas, but then go up to the upper Panhandle and it feels like Kansas. Even the four biggest metro areas in Texas- Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, seem radically different from one another. And California, first of all the major coastal cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, are dramatically different from any other part of the state, especially Northern California and the Central Valley.

5:35 I would also mention that the place initially named California is way south of California, the the conquistadors first landed at La Paz in Baja California Sur (basically Cabo) after navigating across the Gulf of California, as they made their way up they didn't find the connection to continental New Spain (the peninsula is crazy long, something like 700 miles) so they assumed it was an island. When they arrived they saw the natives wearing pearls so they remembered the story of a rich island ruled by a black queen called Calafia herself, California derived from there.

Thank you for acknowledging the California Genocide. I went to school largely in CA (more than any other one place in any case…it’s a little complicated) and can say most classrooms *completely* avoid the California Genocide and similar topics revolving around the 1848 Gold Rush and the origins of Californian US statehood - instead the Gold Rush is presented as this exciting pioneer-like adventure, and in my case we even went to Sutter’s Mill and “panned for gold” on a fun field trip. There was never, ever any hint that there may have been a dark side to what was in reality another totally brutal chapter in the ruthless story of Manifest Destiny. Also I can say that CA is politically much, much more purple than people realize. Of the past 10 governors exactly 5 have been Republican, including Reagan. I am also a resident of TX and can say that living in an ex-slave state is a distinctive experience - yes there are many “Confederate flags” flying around and traditional everyday racism (if you’ll permit the expression) seems more common, but you also consequently have Juneteenth and a greater general awareness of the history of racism. That may surprise you about Texans. Californians often seem out of touch with the history of race in the US, even though SoCal has a massive neo-Nazi problem and I have many memories of skinhead and Aryan gangs causing mayhem at the OC County fair. Yet your typical white Californian thinks their state is “above racism” in some way while exhibiting a noticeable amount of casual racism themselves. Just some remarks from a dual resident.

I lived in Texas for four years and now live in California. Yes... California has worse and worse wild fires ravaging both Northern and Southern California and the smoke has been especially bad these last couple of years. The freeways are crowded most of the day. Cost of living is higher than most areas of the country. Those are some of the negatives of California. Texas on the other hand has mosquitoes the size of horse flies. The summers usually run from early May until October and can be brutally hot and humid. The humidity is what saps the life out of you. The landscape is mostly flat (nice around Austin). I would not call Texas a beautiful state. Freeways are almost always crowded and the state has been very slow to ramp up mass transit. The mantra in Texas is every man has the right to drive his truck or suv. It is a conservative state (except for Austin). Don't cut someone off on the freeway or you can easily be road raged with a gun pointed at you. I had a friend who was falling behind on his rent and even though he told his landlord that he will be caught up within 30 days, he came home to find his front door removed. There are little protections for citizens in Texas unless you want a gun or go to church. California has a coastline like no where in the world. You can go from Southern California sandy beaches that stretch for miles to a rocky coastline in the northern part of the state where you can see whales migrating north of south. The wine country feels like you are in France or Italy... the Sierra mountains feel like you are in Switzerland... The weather is amazing. Warm, "DRY" summers with literally no humidity to mild winters in the south to cooler winters in the north. If you want snow, you need to travel to the mountains where you can snow ski all winter. Yes, California has problems but there is no comparison. I am the happiest I have ever been living in this beautiful, amazing state.

Let’s think about the massive people moved to Texas 2020 and had to go through THE WINTER 2021 omg 😱
everything frozen with no electricity..., in California, you can last summer without air conditioner and winter without heater if you have to.
If you have money with tax sheltered income ( very high tax state), I think it’s the best place to live perhaps in the world.
We, as Californians are fighting to keep this state safe from crazy politicians ( recall governor ) in an effort to not completely go down
the drain ..., bc we love this state in spite of high cost of living.

As a Texan I lived in California for my high school years and some middle school. Horrible education and drought. Too expensive and too much gang activity. When I went to Hollywood and San Francisco. I was shocked at the dirtiest and the huge population of homelessness. Didn’t feel safe at all. I have opposing political beliefs so in high school the kids were awful and treated me horribly. Poor housing. Too crowded at the beaches.
I rather be bite by big ass mosquitos. Live in the heat ( I got pool, I’m good). I know how to handle the “crazy road rage”. I get a nice two room apartment for super cheap.Better education. Better business opportunity. And I hate wine. So Yeah! I’m okay living in Texas. You stay in California and I’ll stay in Texas.

Also no one wants to hear you stupid political takes in school, just because you were a social outcast doesn’t mean it was the governments fault. And California also has a lower housing and property tax then Texas, which proves your only taking your “real experiences” from the media as the majority of California taxes are put into consumption.

Interesting. You didn’t mention the Bear Flag Revolt though. California had a proclaimed republic for about a few months around 1846. Our state flag is in fact based off of the California nation’s flag. Also, the weather in northern California (the entire half of the state, including the San Francisco bay area, the Central Valley and North-Central Coast around Monterey County) is very varied. The coast all along it (including the area around Eureka and Ukiah, the San Francisco bay area, and the north-central coast are much colder compared to the south coast (Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo areas, Los Angeles area, and San Diego area) which are warmer. For some reason coastal winds make northern Cali’s beaches freezing and unbearable for many, including myself. The Central Valley, which is in the north of the state is very warm and hot in the summer, however. Sacramento and Stockton are only an hour or so away from the bay area. And yet they’re boiling hot in the summer. Im many ways I feel like north-eastern California has weather that’s more like southern California. Also Southeastern California (the areas around San Bernadino, Riverside, Calexico, and Palm Springs) are practically all desert. So hot there.

Seriously the reason California have a lot of homeless is because everyone think they can become rich for some reason and move to the coastal area or expensive area...some part of California are affordable and liveable. Because of the big industry in California like Hollywood and Silicon Valley are where people always aim to be. If you don't have a good job don't move to the coastal area lol.

Creepy Closet The minimum wage is a bit to low (should be closer to about $9), but, it is way cheaper to live in Texas. Anyways, a minimum wage job is meant for teenagers, not forty year old high school dropouts. Sure, Texas doesn’t have environmental regulations, but California’s regulations are way too restrictive. I’d rather live in a place where you’re free to do what you want than “combat” climate change.

    • @Spongebrain97
      @Spongebrain97 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@MrKEMills in California you are also free to do whatever you want. The difference is that the line gets drawn when when it starts to negatively affect something else like the environment. Also dont forget that Texas still doesnt have legal weed so it definitely doesnt have that more individualistic freedom. And no the line of reasoning that minimum wage jobs are only for teenagers needs to die off because of how ridiculous that sentiment is. Many people dont have the same opportunities to progress and the notion that people should just "suck it up and work harder" also doesnt work because more americans do that anyways yet work paycheck to paycheck. Why do you think more people live at home into their 20's nowadays when supporting themselves and paying for some kind of school? The 7.25 minnimum wage is far too low and only favors big buisness in Texas and should've been at least 10 bucks years ago. Also the US produces more services now than anything else so the pay should reflect that.
