Stingrays and Steve Irwin have become synonymous. My granny used to show us a lot of Animal Planet when we were young and 90% of the time it was Steve. What great memories.

Nobody could have done anything, even if he got stung in the middle of a hospital. His heart was pierced and venom was secreted right in the middle of it, not that that even made a difference at that point.

speaking from experience it is like being in a real life horror movie. in '84 I went surfing and found that out. this is what happened. normally I drag my feet when I'm heading out, until the water is at least waist deep, then I hop on and paddle out. there had been a big storm and the sand wasn't flat like usual. it was really bumpy. so I was just stumbling along. then, I stepped right on one. immediately it folded his wings up on my foot. it held on to me, while the tail whipped around my ankle an held on to me. then, he stabbed me. it only took a second. I jumped up and blood went every where. I tied my tee shirt around the wound that was on the lower part of my calf, about 7 inches above my heel. I hauled ass to the ER and they put 9 stitches in. my whole leg was on fire. it stayed on fire. I went home and after a couple of hours I about lost my mind with the pain. I called the ER and asked for help with the pain. the guy that answered the phone says, oh. they didn't tell you? No! all you have to do is soak it in real warm water and it will stop hurting. grrrr! I did and sure enough it quit hurting pretty quickly. @#$%&×!! I was at the pool with my gf and she accidentally popped me with a wet towel, right on the bandage. greenish black stuff started leaking out of the bandage. she took me to a different ER. they put me on a table on my stomach and opened up the bandage and the flesh around the wound had died and turned really dark and rotten. they picked all of that off and at the bottom they found piece of the barb, about a half an inch long, in there, at the bottom of a crater. after that I had to endure a failed skin graft. the area where they took the donor skin hurt way more than the hole in my leg. goosebumps were brutal on that big patch where you could tell that they had made a practice run to adjust the cutter thing. then right next to it the real cut. a slice of bread would cover all of it. after 2 months of crutches I was finally back to work on light duty. oh, and I had called into work sick, the day I got stung. woof!

I'm sat here recovering from a stingray sting that happened yesterday. It was a large one and the stinger impaled my foot and went in one side and out the other along the ball of my foot. Far and away the worst pain I've ever been through, and I've been racing bikes (and crashing bikes) for years, had horrible oral surgeries, and more. I just as easily could have been stung through the chest because I was swimming around near the shore and riding waves. These (large ones especially) are no joke.

The venomologist who was with him when he got hit stated that he opted not to have them harm the animal even if it woiuld have helped him. Steve was a gift to the world, and it still breaks my heart that I never got to meet him.
Jeff is still around. He is working at the Georgia Atlantic Aquarium. Went there to see if I could spot him with the penguins. Haven't. But it was nice to know that he was around. people will call anything trauma these days. you did not know steve irwin personally, his death did not impact your everyday life. yes his death was saddening but you were not traumatized due to it. its not like youre the one that got stung by the stingray.

I got stung by a little round ray about the same size maybe a little smaller. I was trying to yank out the hook with pliers and he got me right in the thumb, I was on a kayak at the mouth of a harbor and the tide was outgoing pretty fast. My friend that was on the same kayak already could barely paddle and seeing me freak out as I literally felt the venom work it’s way up my arm towards my heart cramping up my muscles, it just made him even more useless. As we were getting sucked out we found a boat that towed us back to the harbor. Fun memory but never wanna experience it again 😂

The stingray was massive (about 2.5 metres or 8 feet long) so the barb on it would've been able to go all the way through and stick out the other side. How it hit his heart though? The stingray probably was able to build up a lot of force and push his ribs out of the way. Idk, just my hypothesis

The one I had is a traditional smoked stingray braised in a spicy coconut curry, its quite common here in central java, Indonesia. Its really soft and flavourful. And its safe to consume as long as u knew how to prepare it~

I'm totally disappointed in this whole comment section, that the stingrays are getting so much hate.
It is truly unfortunate Steve, one lovable and wholesome biologist died because of 1, we get it... But people need to stop antagonizing/humanizing animals, as if they were a serial killer. Steve loved animals. He even said in his dying breathe to his brother to not hate on them.
And yet, to this day, you still see hate towards them. Shame on them.

Second, this misinformation has been *already* spread and some people demonize the Sting Rays because of this. You may think this is a "joke", but certainly the massive hunt of sharks after "Jaws" wasn't a good joke for all the species of sharks either.
I know people love Steve Irwin. I also love him, but because Steve loved animals and so do I, demonizing the stingrays because it was the cause of his death, and put them in danger because of a "vendetta" for him, it's something people wouldn't like.

I can't imagine the pain Steve went through 😢 he was my favorite when I was little I was young when he died my mom told me I cried and cried!
I got stung by a little round ray about the same size maybe a little smaller. I was trying to yank out the hook with pliers and he got me right in the thumb, I was on a kayak at the mouth of a harbor and the tide was outgoing pretty fast. My friend that was on the same kayak already could barely paddle and seeing me freak out as I literally felt the venom work it’s way up my arm towards my heart cramping up my muscles, it just made him even more useless. As we were getting sucked out we found a boat that towed us back to the harbor. Fun memory but never wanna experience it again 😂

I still can't understand how that stinger was able to make its way through Steve Irwin's breastplate and into his heart
The stingray was massive (about 2.5 metres or 8 feet long) so the barb on it would've been able to go all the way through and stick out the other side. How it hit his heart though? The stingray probably was able to build up a lot of force and push his ribs out of the way.

@@K4L3L_._ I'd say the texture is more like a mix between tuna and crab? Like, the meat is stringy, but firm at the same time. The one I had is a traditional smoked stingray braised in a spicy coconut curry, its quite common here in central java, Indonesia. Its really soft and flavourful. And its safe to consume as long as u knew how to prepare it~
