These days it's kind of like 'yeh cool I guess' but imagine showing this thing to somebody from 100 years ago.
It would blow their mind and it would be an international event and newsworthy for probably years.
Shows how far we've come.
The legend of the mysterious crab spread swiftly among the crustaceans of the shoreline. It became a tale whispered among crabs huddling in their sandy burrows, passed down from generation to generation. The brave act of protecting the vulnerable soft-shell crab against the menacing stingray ignited a spark of resilience and unity among the crab community.
In the days that followed, the once-solitary crabs began to form alliances, recognizing the strength in numbers. They learned from the mysterious crab's example, understanding that by standing together, they could face any challenge that came their way.
As time passed, the memory of the heroic crab persisted, its legend growing with each retelling. It became a symbol of courage, determination, and the power of solidarity. Crabs from far and wide looked to the tale of the legendary crab for inspiration and guidance in their own struggles.
Through unity and perseverance, the crab community flourished, thriving in the face of adversity. And though the mysterious crab may have vanished back into the depths from whence it came, its legacy lived on in the hearts and minds of every crab along the shore.
What a lovely read
Tried reading this in my best narrator voice. Great read too
it is stated, that he resides in the deepest darkest part of the ocean, slumbering away, for among it lies its creators, giants taller then any crab among the shores has seen, they too rest, until the day he is needed again then he will come forth once more, awakend by his giant creators, but for now, in that deep darkness, he resides, slumbering
They were so impressed with the robots bravery protecting that crab, they crowned it their king.

I love how the crabs actually work with each other and protect each other. Even the crabs with hard shells are smart enough to shield the crabs with weaker shells. I thought crabs were sea animals that worked alone, turns out not.
The logic for it is sound: all crabs as they grow need to shed their shells to grow a bigger one beneath it. This time you are the hard shelled one but next week after you shed your own shell you need those neighbours to protect you so if you protect them now they will have your back later. No one can be strong all the time we all need some help every now and again.
the strongest take care of themselves, the strongest take care of others
@@simonwahlen7150 But then the crab that gets protection and provides none gets all the benefits and no risks, which would then be the stable evolutionary strategy. For reciprocity to happen it is required that individuals are able to identify each other and penalize those that do not reciprocate, and I don't think this is the case. The other alternative, altruism, should only happen when close kin, since they share most genes.
@@ronin1648 That wouldn't be a stable evolutionary strategy, if the crab passes on that trait to his offspring and his offspring pass that on to theirs eventually the crabs that don't protect would outnumber the ones who do. The crabs who do protect would find their numbers diminishing as more and more crabs seem to not care about protecting one another.
Soon enough there are no crabs willing to protect each other - the ones who did have since died. That leads to extinction or a servere drop off in population.
Doing what you suggest only leads to small short term gain but dooms their species.
@awawawacm7120 no, that's a common mistake, natural selection is about the differential survival of competing genes, looking at it at the species level is the wrong level of abstraction

Overpopulation changes the game. If there were too many crabs, this wouldn't happen. Instead, they'd learn to burrow and let the ray reduce the competition, so that they might survive.
@@Chameleonred5So why are they doing it?

Not all crabs, but spider crabs do it. They usually live pretty deep down, but once in a while they'll all come migrate into shallow waters to molt new shells, which is when you see this defensive behavior. As soon as most of them finish molting and hardening up, they'll all migrate back into much deeper waters and disperse out again.

Should look up Christmas Island crab mating season - it wild!
I like to think the other crabs thought the spycrab was one of them but just taller and bigger
So they protected it also
I also love the crabs realized the stringray wont eat the hard-shells
And they are smart enough to realize that the armored ones can protect the soft ones
They don't realize either thing. Millions of years of evolution have shaped their instincts such that hard-shelled crabs respond to a threat by climbing over the soft-shelled crabs. The crabs that lacked this trait were eaten by sting rays millions of years ago and didn't survive to pass on their genes. Everything you're seeing is just a stimulus response. That's why they protect the robot too. They don't actually know what's going on, the crabs with hard shells are just compelled to climb to the top of the pile, so they climb over the robot.
i also didnt know they eat 50 crabs a day... i cant even eat 2 crabs a day. Them things is hungry
people are being like "omg crabs r so smart" no buh,,, crabs r dumb, stingrays are smart as hell. they're one of the few animals that can recognize themselves in a mirror
@@TheCollectiveHexagon I don't if the other crabs would even be able to notice? Like it looks robotic, to us, because we have a full HD video with good lighting. Crabs have small little eyeballs that can't collect much light, so to them the world seems kind of dim and blurry to them. Plus, they have the stingray to worry about, they might not be focusing too much on what their neighbors look like
Yeah, I mean they only had like 100 million years to realize that.
It's crazy how a stingray can leave the crab intact after eating all of it's insides, the crab became lifeless. Straight out of a horror movie
I wish I could eat crabs like stingray.
Was the crab actually dead after the stingray spit it out? i was worried it might be still alive and suffering😔
@badidea6034 Nope, stingray broke open its main shell and sucked up all of its innards, including the brain. Those are part of the stingray now.

This just made me smile to my core. 🤗 Never knew these crabs did this to protect one another and then to protect the robot as their own, too.
I love how even if the iron crab is an absolute unit who can tank a stingray, the other crabs saw it left out and attacked by the ray, when the iron crab boi fleed to the pile of crabs, the boys immediatley protected the iron crab like their own from any more apparent danger. Its wholesome asf.
The sting ray was the only one who knew the spy was the true enemy.
It's possible that the stingray was able to recognize the threat posed by the spy robot, which the other creatures were not able to do. This highlights the importance of paying attention to our instincts and being aware of potential threats, even when others around us may not see them.
It knew that the spy has already breached their defenses
Seemed the ray just wanted to eat it, nothing seemed special about its response to the spy crab
The spy robot does look larger in general than the crabs around it, it doesn't move it's claws around to attack like a real crab, and I don't think it was fleeing like a real crab. So to the sting ray it may have looked like a big crab that was too stupid to fight back and would thus make an easy meal. Then when it tried eating it, it found out it didn't have any meat in it and was too tough to crack.

Underwater robots, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), are essential tools for ocean exploration. 2:22
Bizarrely, scientists know more about the surface of the moon and Mars than they do about the seafloor. As of 2021, only around 20% of the ocean had been mapped, in large part due to its inaccessibility, opacity and sheer size. That’s changing thanks to underwater robots. 3:13 [Revolutionized]
@@Gurci28 That comment is a rehash of one from the 1950's when the sea floor was first mapped, Sadly your knowledge has not kept pace with reality.
Mapping has nothing to do with knowledge.
There is vastly more knowledge that has been gained by square meter of the ocean than the moon or mars, which per square meter hasn't changed much and can read as one sentence, rock and dust.
Matthew
Chosen By God.
More than eighty percent of our ocean is unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored. Much remains to be learned from exploring the mysteries of the deep. 3:31 [NOAA]
As of 2023, 24.9% of the global seafloor had been mapped with modern high-resolution technology (multibeam sonar systems), usually mounted to ships, that can reveal the seafloor in greater detail. 0:07 [NOAA]
I absolutely adore any kind of scene where there is just... an absurd amount of one kind of animal. Just hundreds or thousands as far as you can see. Makes you wonder if they feel happier being all together like that, like being with your buddies
They dont. They act on survival instinct, not emotion.
Lower level lifeforms like crabs can't feel emotion. They protect each other like that because it improves their odds to mate when the season comes. Regardless how they act, they're still bottom feeders. They'll eat each other if there isn't enough food to go around. Their instinct to eat is a lot stronger than the instinct to mate. Makes sense?
