What's Inside a Rattlesnake Rattle?

- In this video, we find out what's inside a rattlesnake rattle to learn how rattlesnakes make noise. I thought they made noise like maracas, and have little bits inside of them that knock around, but I was wrong. Instead, rattlesnake rattles are composed of a number of different segments that nest together.

All living things show us the perfect art of creation and infinite power of Almighty Allah. Living things in nature and the perfect systems they contain cannot have come into being "spontaneously" or "accidentally" as atheists claim. @motherlandmars5999 Perfect systems don't exist, and abiogenesis and evolution would disagree with you with many decades of experiments and discoveries.
@@Lobod287 The theory of evolution is nonsense. If the process of evolution has continued for millions of years, why are there not millions of intermediate fossils found underground? The fossils of all living things are complete. It is not incomplete. And the theory of evolution cannot explain how the first living organism emerged from inanimate matter. Evolution is a fairy tale without any scientific proof. Unconscious coincidences cannot provide living things with what they need.
The Cambrian explosion proves that living things appeared all at once without any evolution. Even though this snake's rattle is complex, could it not be complex itself? After scientists saw the complexity in living things, they started inventing gods like "mother nature" or "aliens". Allah Almighty is the only creator. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

No, it belongs to a science team.

Lol😂
That's not its ass. Its ass is where its anus is. Past the anus it's just the tail.
No we eat it
You shaking it was what I thought the snake sounded like. That's probably because in all the old westerns, it WAS a snake rattle being shaken by someone!
More like a Cicada, when you think about the sound. Funny, that.
Here in Texas you hear it almost all day. It's soothing when you're out working
It does sound like that when it's shaking it's tail slow. It doesn't shake it's tail really fast all the time.

I just found this channel and it is immediately my new primary mode of mental therapy. I feel so calm, I could listen to this 100 times. It makes me nostalgic of 90s kids programs that utilizes this style of musical storytelling.
Well it's a channel of misinformation...I have several rattles they DO have little "beads" inside of them that make noise. They come out fairly easily if you're not careful....so I'm guessing either that rattle had a defect or they fell out. They are very small....mine were fresh off of the snakes that firefighters killed in my yard in California. I had to dry the flesh off etc. If I had just found it somewhere it could be very likely it would've been hollow by then even with wind knocking it about.
The way you present is so imaginative. I love that you're working with the actual specimen and showing us what it actually looks like. Best of all, you tell it like a bedtime story!
This channel is aa team production with the same investment as a mainstream television show, and probably has members that where on mainstream television project's.

@@ari3lz3pp Am I understanding this correctly, that you believe that the scientist who makes these videos, who studies animal anatomy professionally, is just... making this all up? I'm not sure what to tell you. What did your snake specimens go through before you analyzed them? A fire? "Dry the flesh off," you said? How were they preserved? Have you considered that your very small "beads" could be the remnants of skin shed or something environmental? If they "come out fairly easily," that doesn't sound like it's part of the snake's anatomy.
Here's a bit from the wiki entry on rattlesnakes. Perhaps you might want to do some research, or talk to your local snake guy and ask some questions:
"The rattle is composed of a series of hollow, interlocked segments made of keratin, which are created by modifying the scales that cover the tip of the tail. The contraction of special 'shaker' muscles in the tail causes these segments to vibrate against one another, thus making the rattling noise (which is amplified because the segments are hollow) in a behavior known as tail vibration. The muscles which cause rattling are some of the fastest known, firing 50 times per second on average, sustainable for a duration of up to three hours."

How fortunate for you
Were you raised in the woods as a feral child, and if so, how were you not bitten?
I mean, you learn very quickly what they are in most situations. Either an older person tells you the first time you hear it, or you get bit pretty quickly and find out yourself.
@@Nylak-Otter I live on the West coast of Canada and I've heard that sound lots but never seen a rattler, lots of garters but no rattlers. I do know burrowing owls sound just like rattlers though, maybe this person lives near those.
@@burnyizlandfun fact! many common non-veminous snakes have evolved to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake by just shaking their tail really fast in leaf litter. theyre trying to fool potential predators into thinking they are veminous and not worth eating! ive witnessed it myself in my garden once, really cool.

So that's why gopher snakes sound like that, theyre mimicking a the sound of the rattle. Cool.
The only actual rattlesnake I ran into was really young and didnt have a full on rattle so ive never heard the sound in person, and just kinda assumed the movie rattling sound was accurate. Still, even if I didnt know what its supposed to sound like, all the gopher snakes ive had to evict form did thoroughly intimidate me with the sound. But theyre easier to grab when theyre trying to scare you though lol.

Allah NEVER died or sacrificed himself for Anyone.
But if you don’t believe like a Muslim then you wacko’s can kill that person, which makes your religion a religion of HATE and not Love.

Who wants to serve a god that demands that everyone bows down to him so that their freedoms are taken away?

My grandparents lived on a ranch, when I was a child, and I used to spend every summer with them there. They had a fairly large blue ceramic jar filled with rattlesnake rattles. My grandparents had killed them all, and cut their rattles off. I would sit and play with them, for hours, over the summers.
This channel is the coolest PBSadult show ever! Thanks Mr.Rogers! I stupidly thought there was small beads inside the tail
I live in a place with a lot of rattle snakes and at first it would make sense to think that it worked like a maraca but if you think hard about it that makes no sense because the snake would have to grow hard balls or bits of bone or something inside the rattle and then have it somehow detach. So if you think about it really does make perfect sense why that isn’t the case.
In my youth I would catch and release rattlesnakes in the hills of Southern California. I was never quite sure how the rattle part worked. This is a very good video explaining the process of rattling. Thank you for making it!
You would catch rattlesnakes when you were kid?! Scary
Notice that they aren't going back and forth either. They are being rotated side to side. That also affects the sound and, frankly, the musculature to do that would seem easier to control and accelerate than to simply shake it back and forth.
Knew that they were hollow but didn't know how they actually _make_ sound exactly... Nice vid 👍🏽. I suppose being hollow amplifies the sound too
I’m with you - I thought it was like a maraca - with little pebbles or something inside. Mother Nature is way too smart. And that sound does send shivers down your spine. 😬

What is also interesting is that the rattle snake is aware that it has a rattle on the end of its tail which is why it rattles the rattle by vibrating its tail.

Thanks now I understand from were that noise comes from the woods and exact rattling.
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, until you step on a rattlesnake.
Used to get these from my dad as a kid they were weird but at least a rattlesnake tried to warn you when you get close, Water moccasins don’t care and are far more terrifying in my experience.
Ive encountered them while hiking and they've sounded like a soda can that someone shook and opened or like a sprinkler.
Cool! Through natural predation, the rattle was useful to keep predators at bay as an alert to stay away, so more rattle, more baby snakes with rattles. Sadly, recently, humans have been easily hunting the snakes because of the rattle sounds drawing them to their location, and as such have influenced the population to start to 'devolve' back to being 'rattle-less'. It's similar to how during the industrial revolution, white moths in urban environments disappeared due the coal soot covering the buildings as the white color wasn't good camouflage. When people switched to cleaner energy sources and washed the buildings, the black moths started to disappear just like the white moths earlier as they now stuck out for predators to eat instead.
