Thank you, Hannah! Over the years, despite the early issues within the online vegan community, you've remained a constant voice of reason. It's so hard when 'health' gurus online get sick from their restrictive plant-based diets and blame veganism for their health problems. Positive influencers like yourself allow non-vegan audiences to see that there are tons of us out here sustaining normal healthy lives!

Thank you for sharing. When i 1st watched dr McDougal’s video i was on a keto diet that left me hungry all the time. Having had my tongue removed due to cancer led me down that path & i was having trouble swallowing the meat & fish that i had to eat. I was put on that diet by my oncologist. The moment i heard dr McDougal said plant based diet w/ lots of starch can reverse some cancer, i shouted out hallelujah coz i no longer have to eat all those animal proteins. I went cold turkey quitting meat, fish & dairy and never looked back. The only thing i miss from time to time is cakes & pastries. Cakes i can bake myself, vegan version oil free. The moment i made the switch i was so much happier and my body doesn’t seize up as much. I sleep better and recover better from “strenuous activities”. It has been 2 yrs now and i can only keep going. Cancer treatment medically is so stressful to the body & so toxic that i wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. I wish you lots of luck on the baby project. I got 2 kids of my own & they’re my pride and joy.

Hannah! Thank you for sharing this video. I've noticed several popular TH-cam leaders who are addicted to health (orthorexia) turn to extreme short-term diets (starvation, water fasts, juice fasts, etc) and then blame being vegan on their health issues. It's insane. A balanced vegan diet isn't remotely related to extremist methods of altering the body. I've been vegan for 7 years, and my health has been incredible. Thank you for sharing YOUR story! I send you so much love, girl!

10:30 YES! Vegans can still get cancer or have asthma or have serious medical problems. A healthy vegan diet will not fix genetics. Needing medical help does not mean you're a bad vegan. THANK YOU! More people need to say this.

    • @davidthescottishvegan
      @davidthescottishvegan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Amy Montgomery, I agree with what you said. Vegans have to realise that there's health problems that aren't diet/lifestyle related that can't be cured by any diet/lifestyle because it is in their DNA. I have a illness myself that can't cured by food because of that and I know other vegans that also have illnesses that they would still have if they weren't vegan because it is genetic.

    • @Ramiromasters

Asthma is related to allergies provoked by lectins in some plant foods.
Most cancers are the result of carbohydrate processes inside the body.

We are all going to die eventually regardless of whether we eat healthy, eat vegan or eat omnivore. Some people act like if you don't make it to 100, your efforts to stay healthy were a failure or something... come on. Saw this with Andreas Moritz.
My great grandfather lived a high quality of life, no major health problems, independently, til age 98, then went to assisted living and passed away relatively peacefully of old age at 103 in the late 80's. He ate like most vegans do today (from what I understand and saw as a child) beginning in the early 1900's to the late 1980's. None of his descendents followed suit and ate a SAD diet, for the most part... and he outlived them by a solid 25 years each... all his children and grandchildren, who did not even live as long as their parents.... Except us great grandchildren are still here (we are doomed if this trend continues)... we are all in our late 40's, early 50's. But, there are some people who lived long and independently on beer and chips too, although they seem to be the exception to the rule... but, the best chance for most people is to focus on foods that promote health and avoid junk, regardless.
If a plant based diet is the approach, go for it... if something resembling a blue zone diet is the approach go for it... if you don't want to... eat chips and drink beer... we all have choices and who knows how long anyone will live or what kind of maladies we will suffer or not along the way... we can do what we generally know to prevent maladies, but there is no guarantee for anyone

Hannah! I watch your videos often, and this is by far my favourite one!! It's so true that the vegan diet can be tweaked to bring a certain result - higher protein, higher fibre, less fat, etc. Plant-based diets can be extremely diverse, and I appreciate you mentioning that. Sometimes I feel like people assume we (vegans) all eat the same diet - usually assumed it's only raw, very low protein etc. Thanks for sharing!

    • @Ramiromasters
      @Ramiromasters 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You do know fiber was a scam by the grain industry?
Basically everything you've heard about fiber the opposite is true, and in fact starch is the one doing the lifting and fiber all the bloating and gases and constipation. Though it does reduce the absorption of carbs because you are inflamed... Can't digest properly.

I'm 23 and I've been experiencing the same thing you have throughout your weight loss, drinking, smoking, going vegan, gaining weight etc.
this is why I've followed you from the beginning. your path is so similar to mine it amazes me. I'm 23 and I've been vegetarian for 9 years and 4 years vegan.
its hard watching all the old youtubers i watched for inspiration into my early years of learning about veganism. It also makes me mad I watch their videos and im like maybe this isn't best for me, but deep down I know its possible to live this lifestyle. ive gone through so many trial and errors and being subscribed to you has changed my life. thank you for making this video. its frustrating when I feel like I have no right guidance on this journey when it comes down to this stuff. but I know its all very possible and im not giving up.

Great advice and honesty. Much needed this week 😊 and yes, the doctors and researchers are the ones to pay attention to!! Fruit works for me but I don't eat it exclusively, I still eat cooked sweet potatoes, veggies and pulses and I eat enough to be full, not slamming in too many calories than I need, I'm only a tiny vegan 🐹 you've inspired me to share my recipes and thoughts on youtube but in an honest and balanced way. Thanks Hannah. There are different ways to build a healthy vegan diet with whole foods.

Hannah, I support you 100%. I have had to deal with alot of stuff being a fitness/yoga/ personal trainer. These are our truths we have sought out. I went to Judy McFarland who in the 50s opened up her store Lindberg Nutrition. She knew I was Vegan... I sought answers. Like you I saw my needs. Knowing whay works for you and all plant based food is healthy. Swinging one way or the other does not work for everyone. OD on Supplements is not good; but knowing what you need is best. I can not as a trainer prescribe things... yikes no! I can only talk from myself. Yes being Orthorexic is dangerous or purest mind set. You are so wise seeking out a plant based doctor. I think you are right on. You really needed to bring this out into the forefront of your channel. My friend is a youtuber... What works for her...works for her. I hope you stay well and happy. I enjoy your videos. Peace be with you. Namaste'💓

Thank you for this video, and for being consistent, not just dropping out of your morals over health issues, but figuring out the root cause and getting better. I think the main issue is sometimes people think being vegan will fix everything but the time we live in it’s very easy to fall out of eating unhealthy and many vegan alternatives don’t contain a variety of things. I’m trying so hard to eat better, less vegan junk food, but even how I eat now I don’t gain weight nearly as fast as I used to.

logical, levelheaded, critical, scientific AND intuitive ( most people choose this or that, when it should be both simultaneously because they are intertwined ) willing to research, does yearly bloodtest to stay up to date, seeks professional plant based doctors, not afraid of medical help, willing to try everything before going back to eating animals and betraying her own values...
    you madame earned my respect.
    good job.
    keep up the good work.

So interesting! I just posted something about this subject. My husband is doing a more starch diet and after constantly trying, I stopped losing weight, started gaining and feeling bloating. Turns out what works for me is G-Bombs. Mainly because I'm HIGHLY Insulin Resistant. Type II diabetic, hypothyroid, PCOS. I'm on insulin so the excess insulin stores as fat. Any fat in my diet raises blood sugars and my numbers are higher with white potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, pastas, etc. After chatting with another WFPB Type II diabetic who lost a lot of weight, I'm finding that we as Insulin Resistant folks need to cut out the starches like potatoes, rice, etc. until we're less insulin resistant and THEN add those WFPB starches back. I felt so confused and discouraged because my husband was making headway and I just hit a road block. I recently mentioned that every body is different. What works for my husband doesn't work for me and that's okay! It shouldn't mean defeat if our way doesn't fit the mold. It's the end result that counts.
Thanks for the informative video. Loved it Hannah!

This is a really great video, Hannah. Another good resource for doing a plant-based diet sustainably is Pam Popper (she has a TH-cam channel) and her company is The Wellness Forum. She's a naturopath in Columbus, OH, who is closely affiliated with Mcdougall, Esselstyn, etc, and her business is all about helping people make informed decisions about their health based on actual scientific research, how to talk about your health with your doctor (whether or not they're plant-based), and she offers a ton of online classes, a coaching program, etc. She also answers all her own emails so she's accessible and super passionate about helping people thrive on this diet. Just wanted to share because I've learned sooooo much from her and her videos etc. Anyway- sending you love!!

wow thank you for actually stating some science, I went vegan bc of listening to gary null for 10+years on the radio, hes a vegan nutritionist hes been vegan for more than 35 years.i think its important on a vegan diet to get all the vitamins you need and one thing these raw foodists go wrong in is some veggies actually need to be cooked to release there healthy properties example" broccoli and mushrooms" after watching alyse and rawvanas bs videos today i needed to watch a real vegan, thanks for being a REAL vegan!

I love this video. I think it's important to remember it's not about perfection but it's about trying to find a sustainable diet that is moral and ethical. There is vegan junk food and processed foods if you need that. There are vegan foods that are fortified to contain a lot of vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins we need so that we can be efficient in our eating (I happen to like to graze all day anyway). I hate when people say it's unnatural or impossible to live your life vegan because people in non-western societies have been living and eating like this for generations, for centuries! It is completely doable! Beans, rice, vegetables and fruits, they contain all you need.

I have totally embraced the Okinawan/Tarahumara staples. I make a big pot of soup with sweet potatoes, corn, beans, squash, various greens, and chia seeds almost every day. It's fast, simple, and super healthy. That soup makes up probably 85-90% of the bulk of my diet. Once you embrace a variety of starchy veggies as the base and bulk of your diet, this becomes really easy.

Thank you so much for the links. I was surprised to see that there are no plant based doctors in Seattle, there are a couple in Vancouver WA, which is three hours away, but it would be worth it. I believe there are some plant based nutritionists in Seattle. I would like to suggest that plant based eaters who suffer from digestive issues and IBS check out a book called "What To Eat When You Can't Eat Anything". It is a Low FODMAP vegan cookbook. Following a low FODMAP vegan diet totally turned my IBS around, and it helped me identify the foods that I couldn't eat. Definitely anyone having health issues should see a real doctor though. I ran the low FODMAP diet by my doctor, who is not vegan, and he said, try it! After a few months I introduced each food group back and found the only thing that caused symptoms was gluten. I had beeb diagnosed with gluten intolerance and peanut allergy in in childhood, and mistakenly believed that I could have "small amounts of gluten". I can not. I suppose that I am lucky that my health issues were so easily managed by an elimination diet, but I suspect most people can manage their health more creatively than simply adding animal products. Definitely, vegans should talk to vegan doctors! Thank you so much for the links, I will absolutely look into the possibility of seeing one of the WA based plant based docs!

Thank you for the excellent and well timed information & inspiration. You are one of the best vegan role models - not to put pressure, but keep on sharing, even repeating yourself. Immeasurable value in your work.
One essential concept about dealing with nutrition issues on a plant based diet: as a vegan our challenge is to seek and find PLANT BASED SOLUTIONS rather than a quick fix from other solutions. Animal products may fix a problem, but they are not the only solution, and definately not the best ETHICAL solution. xx

Enjoyed your video as I recover from my Western intervention (emergency gall bladder removal, ambilical hernia repair)😒. It wasn't in my plan of a fun thing to do, it wasn't on my bucket list, but pain makes you do things you never thought you would. I'm researching now because I did my yearly blood work and it wasn't what I wanted to see, this surgery, plus I'm doing a spit test for female hormones next month to see where I'm at with all those jewels 😂. So we definitely have a advocate for ourselves. Loved the video! I love your Veiw on only supplementing when needed but not living in fear of suppliments. Can't wait for the next video and congrats on your speaking engagement in the vegan world!!💐

I've had a similar Journey To You Hannah. I started off following a high carb low-fat vegan raw fruitarian diet. Then a HCLF vegan raw till 4 diet. Also, I used to be scared of supplementing. But, through all of my years of trial and error I still believe that the 80 10 10 diet is the most ideal for human beings. With that being said we don't live in an ideal world and raw fruitarianism is difficult to implement when you have I history of food addiction or just a genetic predisposition to gaining weight or being diabetic. That's what I found. If I were in the tropics and had access to organic fresh fruit everywhere then I would totally follow a fruitarian diet. But being that I live in a heavily industrialized Society like most of us, I have found what works for me is definitely low-fat but higher protein and also high carb.

This is exactly why I love you and follow you. Thank you for the plant based doctors link as well. This is exactly what I need in my life right now as I deal with EDS and it’s very hard to figure out what I need to be doing on my own, especially when regular doctors really don’t know much about nutrition let alone EDS and what a person with EDS needs to do nutritionally. I’ve been doing so much of my own research but like you I’m no doctor. I’ve been vegan for nearly 4 years. I’m better for it on many levels. I’m looking forward to getting medical help from a doctor who is plant based who will be equipped to monitor my nutritional values and recommend plant based ways to support my body even with EDS. Bless you Hannah! 🙏🏻

I don't do fasting, high fat, low carbohydrate diet, raw diet, fruit only diet I have a balanced vegan whole plants foods based lifestyle with lots of vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, legumes, spices and herbs etc.

As a small vegan youtuber, you are a breath of fresh air. I love you so much. ❤️ I’m an ethical vegan so I will never change. I went vegan after becoming a wildlife photographer. It competely changed me. I love nature and animals so much. I eat a wfpb diet with the occasional vegan junk foods and treats added in. It keeps me sane, satisfied, and happy. It’s about long term sustainability to me. I eat a rainbow of plant foods and I feel amazing! I also love and trust the plant based doctors and the literature. I definitely agree with finding what works for you. Myself, personally, I can't eat low fat. I've tried to in the past and it just never worked for me. I find fat to be the most satiating macro for me. When I try to just eat a hclf diet, I'm ravenous constantly. I need a good balance of carbs, plant proteins, and whole fats to feel my best. Especially with my hormone issues, fats are key. But, everyone is different. Some people feel better eating higher protein, or higher carb. As long as it works for you, that's what's important.
