The Paradox Lurking Inside Rick And Morty

  • The best Rick and Morty Episodes all have one thing in common, and its one thing the show is doing better than a lot of its contemporaries. Rick and Morty has been one of its networks most successful shows and season 4 continued that ratings trend. But for every funny moment, or even emotional one, there's a writer trying to better understand these characters. Rick and Morty may not be perfect, but its writers are nailing one of the most important tasks in television.

I’ve always had this idea of how Family Guy is Peter slowly becoming an alcoholic. In the first episode he gets really drunk and Lois gets extremely upset which happens less later on telling me he didn’t really drink before. So what we see is a combination of what happens as a result of him drinking and falsified memories with how it affects the family dynamic.
I’d like someone else to make it because I don’t really want to.

Zoe Kin I don’t think he is. Sociopaths do not, deep down, care about others. Meanwhile, we see that Rick’s greatest weakness is that he cares about Morty and hates himself for it.
Also, Rick is on the autism spectrum, and we generally have trouble expressing empathy in a way that makes sense to others. This led to the misconception that autistic people don’t have empathy.
On top of that, he is an alcoholic who has, again and again, seen that his life does not matter. He has watched his loved ones die 100,000 times in countless ways. That would seriously fuck a person up.
He is not a good person. But I don’t really believe he’s a sociopath.

You kinda left out Summer and dismissed her. When you peel away the teen angst, she's easily the most Rick-like member of the Smith family apart from Rick himself. She's jaded, she's generally unphased (compared to Morty) by the hand full of crazy adventures she gets taken on with Rick and she'll usually have little trouble quickly adapting to things like a post-apocalyptic universe or a female-controlled alien planet. Also, like Rick, she desperately wants others to love her even though she always pushes everyone away (oddly, the only character she seems to show open affection for is Rick, since she normally addresses him as "grandpa Rick vs. Morty who just calls him "Rick"). She berates Morty every bit as much as Rick does even though she cares about him and, also like Rick, she says she wants Beth and Jerry to get divorced and abandon her even though she runs off with the Mad Max dude rather than trying to face her parent's divorce. She seems to be the show's creator's way of portraying a less nihilistic version of Rick since she seems to see some value in human life, being disturbed by things like Rick's space ship's murderous tendencies or Unity's slavery system and the ensuing nipple-based race war when Unity starts to weaken. I think Summer kind of portrays a more "normal person" mirror of Rick.

Excuse you, Summer is extremely important. She represents the "normal" part of the family in the beginning (normal whiny teenager) but then slowly becomes more like Rick as he becomes more of a role model to her (she also is the only tangible connection Jerry still has to the family as she was the only one to willingly visit him after he moved out) before she finally departs from his antics as she's mostly figured out that she doesn't need Rick's approval to be herself. Yes, she goes on adventures but she's her own person during them.

    • @timlicht2670

It's not something I would have thought of either, not in the context of a show that is as much sci-fi adventure and drama as it is comedy, but it's a pretty sensible basis for comparison - a lot of standard comedy works the same way, by having a "zany" character, usually called the "funnyman" or "banana man," and a "straight man," or a character who reacts normally and rationally and shows the zaniness of the more comedic character.
In this case, naturally, Rick is the funnyman, and Morty is the straight man. Much like Jim, from The Office, or Michael from Arrested Development.

@Rhys Higgon When I say well written, I mean that a lot of thought is put into the episodes. There's a lot attention to detail. Things that happen in one episode carry over to the following episodes. All the laws of physics are internally consistent within the show...they may disagree with real life, but it is a cartoon, and a satire, at that.
If you're complaining about the depth or lack of depth in the stories, I can't help you there. I can compare Rick & Morty to any number of other popular comedies and the maturity level is on par. Fart jokes are popular but they don't appeal to everyone. It's like South Park in that respect. If you're crapping on the show because you don't like that kind of humor, you're probably missing the serious undertones of social criticism.

I keep saying it over and over again; what makes a good show? Character Development.
If the characters don't grow and change, they don't feel like real people and you don't become attached to them. The more raw and real the emotion of the characters, the more connected the viewer becomes. A good foil to Rick and Morty in this sense is Family Guy. Peter doesn't grow and change no matter what happens in the show. You feel no emotional connection when something good or bad happens, and that's fine because the show is just for pure laughs. Then take something like Letterkenny that is also comedy-centric but the characters experience real problems and when Wayne has a certain relationship problem (I won't spoil anything) you feel the hurt along with him. It makes you sad and angry and those feelings linger even when you turn the TV off.

  • @tornadochaser2457

Excellent video! I just discovered this channel, and I LOVE IT! I love Morty's character development throughout the show - Aside from what you said, it's just a realistic, natural evolution that has given the show wonderful character depth. A once frightful, anxious, over-stressed boy has turned into a resourceful, mature person, that can hold his own under pressure. This evolution is firmly felt since he's one of the two main characters of the series, it colours all of it, and the realism of this evolution aids the grounded family drama you mentioned in the video, which makes the show impactful by being relatable. There's nowhere left to go with Rick really, perhaps an evolution will occur for him far later down the line when the show is nearing its end, but as of now, he stands as a delightfully entertaining, unique character, and you know the old saying - "If it ain't broke...". I say "nearing its end" as that way, the show retains the fantastic character it has now for essentially its whole run. However, with Morty as opposed to Rick, there have been great places to go, and I actually still see some more potential for evolution, that I expect will get fulfilled.

The fact this show has an amazing group of characters that carry this show should be a surprise to no one - Harmon nailed that aspect in Community and built on that for R&M.

And I know that the characters are killers and thieves but it doesn’t make your attachment to them any smaller. Yeah, you can change the story by the way you progress through the story but it won’t end one thing: Clementine, as well as AJ, is a killer.

That's one example, but there are lots of them, of varying quality. Decades ago we had "very special episodes" where a character disrupted the idealized sitcom worlds to walk down some dark path, but either got scared straight or punished for it by the end of the episode. Now we have series built around the transgressions, i.e. "what if Mike Seaver or Vanessa Huxtable (or whoever) pursued a self destructive life that got them estranged from their families?"
