Let's not forget that the spotter is a world class shooter, world champion as well. They are busting the myth of tiny groups at very long ranges. Rare and somewhat lucky.
For those of you who missed the myths he debunked, they were: 1. Shooting a sub-MOA group automatically means you have a sub-MOA rifle 2. A sub-MOA rifle is necessary for long range shooting 3. Suppressors decrease bullet velocity
@Charles Lindberg While the inventor did coin the invention a "silencer", that would only apply as a name to that specific item he marketed and sold. The item in general sold by numerous other companies and different models is correctly referred to as a "suppressor" as they almost never manage to silence the report of a firearm but are only able to suppress it. This is a decision agreed upon by firearm experts all over the world. Everything else you've stated is entirely missing the point and context of the myths he stated in the video
@Charles Lindberg Suppose that goes to show you can be an operator and still be a dumbass in terms of firearms 🙄 Your argument is that a single company wrote an article. The GOVERNMENT who is notorious for mislabeling items when it comes to the subject of firearms. Wikipedia which is a mixed bag facts and fables. Your argument is a joke. But if you insist on arguing with the decisions and statements of actual firearms experts across the world instead of ACTUALLY educating yourself, go for it 👍
@Charles Lindberg No, no and no. In no universe is it referred to as a "Silencer", outside of libtard jurisdiction. You people are the most cringiest POGs I've ever witnessed.
@Charles Lindberg a Can doesn't silence gun noise. It suppresses it. Silencer is just the term the feds chose to characterize it because that was the name on the patent. It is a suppressor.
Right but people shooting with a suppressor often will use subsonic ammo, which does decrease bullet velocity and range. So it wasn’t a myth about the suppressor itself. They didn’t even address this in the video.
+GamePhysics basically, common sense would dictate that the suppressor lowers bullet velocity, and in turn range. but in this case, because the ranges are so great, and the ammunition is not subsonic in the first place, the additional barrel length from the suppressor actually gave the rifle about another 100 meters of range.
Just about all of life is designed to enhance your consumer experience. Larry is a hero. He's spend years in special forces. Nobody should diss the guy.
As it turns out, if you know nothing about rifles, you know nothing of the "myths" he was referring to. It is a common misconception (perpetuated by video games) that a suppressor will reduce distance and velocity. This video proved both myths wrong. Both distance and velocity are actually increased. Also, he specifically mentions the "myth" of the sub-moa group; that just because someone shoots a sub-moa group doesn't mean they have a sub-moa rifle and that a 1/4" group doesn't carry out to any distance. A 1" group at 100 yds. is amplified to a 15" group at 1,500 yds. TH-cam is not a replacement for qualified instruction and should only be used as a supplement to enhance your pre-existing knowledge of a particular subject.
It's a stupid argument anyway because the general implication is you're using subsonic AMMO alongside a suppressor which therefore lowers your velocity.
Yep, I'm one of the guys that didn't know about this myth (kind of assumed it to be honest), and was very surprised he had better performance with it being suppressed. Now I know!
Well I'm impressed. 20 inch 338 Lapua Mag reach 1500 yds at 1 moa. I think everyone is missing what spin and weather conditions do to a bullet at that range. Good video. Thanks
Not everyone who has the knowledge has the ability to pass it. Having the knowledge and being able to convey it to the people who do not have it is what being a Professor is all about. Mr. Vickers here has both. Thank you Mr. Vickers.
Yeah but I won't be buying those $1 bullets anytime soon. I need to shoot way too much to get my skill up to shoot that stuff. Blems, seconds, and overstocks for me, sucka!
Screw the negative comments thanks for the video Larry. Great video I'm glad you guys showed that suppressors do boost velocity just adding to another factor in getting hits on target past 1,000
That's an awesome gun, but those shots were incredible. Most of us could take that same gun and not make those shots. People can laugh if they want, but when I hit a 12 inch target at 500 i'm happy.
TexanUSMC8089 those shots weren’t “incredible”. Heck in 2 months of going to the range every second weekend I’ve taught myself to hit a milk jug at 1000 meters with a 243. I taught myself to do load development based on what I researched from many sources, then learned about ballistics and drop, load tuning and with that 243,and many other cartridges as well. My 260 will run 1400 meters before it drops subsonic, making 24” gongs easy. Anyone can do it as long as they are consistent.
As a gunsmith, I have been informed by some clients that the rate a bullet drops is due entirely to the price of the ammunition. Apparently, the more one spends the longer the laws of gravity leave ammo alone. They might have attempted to state that some overpriced ammo brands rated at a very high speed allowed a difference in trajectory but was unable to explain why. Actually, in the retail world the customer is frequently wrong because of many misconceptions and myths. Not wanting to ask questions in a misguided fear to appear dumb is the biggest problem.
+James Okello Why would it? They are still hitting hard to 1400yards. Try that with .308win. Short thick barrel vibrates less and is easier to transport. And keeps suppressed lenght to be operatable in field conditions.
So what? Sure bullet does drop more, but when shooting past 300 yards you need correct firing solution anyway. Whats with the need for speed addiction.
Because you still have to carry that rifle to your spot, preferably consealed. Certain rifles are just desinged for different stuff. Philosophy of use. .308 to 800yards. .338lm to 1400yards, .50bmg antimaterial and beyond 1400. Sure if you carry that rifle in your truck to local range, you can have 40 inch barrel if you wish. But that rifle isnt yours or isnt desinged for prone range shooting.
Suppressors may give the bullet A LITTLE more velocity out of the barrel, but the main thing is that it calms the air outside of the muzzle and gives the bullet a cleaner exit it out of the rifle, so the bullet gets stabilized sooner and better than without a suppressor.
Citations fo this "calm air" business? Sure suppressors can/do improve accuracy, more to do with barrel harmonics than anything to do with air stabilization from any information i have come across.Simply adding weight to the front of many rifles, without any suppression or braking, improves accuracy. If you have any interests in the subject check out johhnys reloading bench's series on barrel harmonics.
Because a can traps all the turbulent air behind the projectile as it exits, unlike a brake that creates turbulent air, and especially a barrel with no muzzle device that shoots air and gases out in the same direction as the bullet and in front of the bullet. The velocity you gain isn't really enough to matter.
Man this Larry guy wants to talk the talk so bad. Mister Serious face would shit bricks first hiss over his head. Just waiting for him to start saying “outstanding” “tactical”
Thank you so much for making this video, this will help me explain long range shooting to ArmA players and should help me get them past some of the most common misconceptions about ballistics in general.
Are these adjustments before battlefield prior to the actual target shooting or at the same time when you are in the enemy zone, wanna take down the target? Because, If You are long range sniper in the enemy zone, looking for your target for days, suddenly you see him a mile away, you need to shoot him before he disappears for you don’t know how long again, no time for adjusting your gun with target by shooting around it, ---- what do you do in that case ?
John Doe Still, why deal with the recoil if you're not going to fully utilize the cartridge? There are other rounds that'll hit at that distance without killing your shoulder, and they cost less too.
FishyMacaroon6: 1. L. Vickers is a has-been with loads of funding and sponsors, so cost isn't really a factor for him as it pertains to shooting. 2. As for recoil, it isn't nearly as bad as you'd think. Muzzle brakes go a long way toward mitigating recoil.
This has to be one of your best videos Larry! Thank you for putting it up. Nothing against your first attempt last year, but Gunsite and their instructors are some of the best on the planet. Performing at those distances require a "system" of sorts - having a second person who is very experienced as your spotter/ballistics dude really helps.
I don't hunt at more than 300 yds, but if I had to punch paper at 1000, maybe I'll go with a 30 cal, or something in 7mm or 6mm (edit 6.5mm) because it's lighter to carry, cheaper, less recoil and the faster round makes for less wind deflection. It's just seems to me there is lots of lost potential in a short barrel 338. But then again, it's like cars. If you like it and it works for you, it's good and there's no point arguing.
Walt was my instructor for the .223 Carbine class I took a few years ago. He is a very knowledgeable and a very good person. I would like to shoot the Long Range course with him some time.
It's not the length it's the freebore boost. You have pressure behind the bullet pushing it through unrestricted airspace because the bullet isn't gripping the rifling of the barrel.
It's both. It's still primarily the length, however. Without a tight grip around the Bullet; some gasses could escape, and that wouldn't be as effective as a Bullet going down the Barrel.
+Big6Duke There is nothing mythical about freebore boost. It's real, it happens plenty of data to back it up. My case in particular was 32fps with a Thunderbeast 30P-1 with a 6.5x47Lapua.
Hey larry I temporarily reside in Singapore and I saw you on documentary channel and you were talking about the legion and the famas and I thought it was pretty cool to see you on TV :)
if you think about it, a suppressor should increase range and accuracy. 1: the extended barrel length means that the bullet receives more 'correction' before exiting the barrel 2: by the extended time inside the barrel, the gasses has a longer time to propel the bullet = greater velocity and inertia = range though I dont understand how the suppressor affects muzzle flash yet can someone explain the interior design of a suppressor
+INSTALL: You do realize, I hope, that even if the bullet did not slow down, (as if earth were airless) the bullet still drops much further per each succeeding second, or per each succeeding 100 yds, as it moves away from the gun. For instance, in the first second the bullet drops 16ft off the boreline. At the end of 2 seconds it is 64ft below the boreline. At the end of 3 seconds, 144ft below the boreline. This all tends to point out just how improbable are some of these hilariously long shots at animals, using laser rangefinders, uploaded to utube. But I guess we expect naïve bullshit on utube......
Learned a valuable thing, when a supersonic gun's round goes below the sound barrier, that distance is really the end of it's effective range. Didn't know that, makes perfect sense though.
I love marksmanship I varsity lettered in High school J.R.O.T.C. then became a Rifle and pistol expert in the U.S. Marines eventually getting battalion high shooter on the old K.D. course with a 243 out of a possible 250 i wound up becoming a school trained Range coach. I trained at Quantico Virginia and learned the rudiments of B.R.A.S.S. and night shooting as well as range estimation how to correct a shooters mistakes. how to instruct Marksmanship. bow to be consistently good at the good habits of marksmanship. how important front sight clear tip is. (iron sights) and how important it is to believe in ur dope adjustments and to do a proper ZERO. I shot expert at camp Schwab in Okinawa Japan with a tropical storm raging all around us. wind and rain. (affects the shooters mental state more than than the bullet down range) weather can be dealt with in ur mind and u can overcome the weather and still score hits on target even at 500 yards with iron sights M-16 (a2) Okinawa U.D.P. 1988 Hog Battery 3/11 Semper-fi
+kramotakra I would love for Todd Hodnett to come on here and school all the folks who refuse to change with the times and new training techniques. There is a reason why he is the foremost expert on long distance and all of his .308's and .338 LPM's bolt guns are barreled at 20 inches (granted they are all Bartlein like mine).
+Patrick Miller Yep, short and thick better than long and hanging LOL Nah, Todd won't have the time.... he can make people feel extremely inferior though "long range is easy, just apply the fundamentals" Reminds me of the bullseye masters who explain how they do it "pick up gun, squeeze trigger, put gun down." Well, I apply fundamentals all day long and not shooting as well as Todd!
+kramotakra It definitely includes a ton of practice and range time too. I can say that Todd's teaching technique is very calming and confidence inspiring. Before I took his class I struggled to get out to 1k, I had the same cockeyed body position, and inconsistent fundamentals like I saw in this video. The old guys like Larry and a lot of commenters really struggle with letting go of out dated ideas such as longer barrels and really wrenching down on the gun. Long distance is really not that hard.....
Great video, and so well filmed. Just one thing I don’t agree with is that the idea of sub-MOA is a myth. It depends on the shooting type, distance and related factors. At longer distances due to wind, projectile speed and related factors, groups will open up and sub-moa becomes unachievable at some point. At sub-600 with a good gun/load combo, half moa isn’t unachievable, but rather, can be a viable goal that allows you to develop loading and shooting knowledge and skills that are critical to distance shooting anywhere even close to an MOA. Two years ago, when I was shooting a lot more before a lack of rain and fire restrictions, with my 308 and 5 load variation averaged across the 1425 round season I shot .594 MOA not counting my routine of 5 round gun and sight acclimation. My 300 yard season average across 906 round on my 6.5 CM was .414 and my 1,000 yard 112 rounds on my 338 LM was .877 MOA. All of these were post gun warm-up on hand loads. I did some 1,500 - 2,000 yard shooting, but that is always gong shooting. In fact, given wind variations and unmeasurable misses, I think that the idea of an MOA gun/load combo is the real myth. How do you even track that honestly, and what would it really mean? You picked only still days at even temps? Some types of shooting revolves around consistent 3’s, while some even lower.
While I was disappointed the title was misleading I did enjoy watching those guys shoot. Im a newby slowly building up my first LR set up. So far I have a Daniel Defense 6.5 CM topped by a Vortex Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 EBR-7C and slowly paying off an Altas BT46. next buy will be an Area 419 Hellfire break and maybe after that a silencer Co or Thunder beast ultra 7. Maybe its just me but I always enjoyed iron sights vs scopes.
..yes, the voices from the rookie seats is inevitable. They are not capable of keeping teeth together. It’s quite a thing..these folks who critique every detail of these videos..yet when I ask them where is their instructive video..? As they speak as if they are somehow a expert marksman since they read guns and ammo and other internet sites, and those articles become their “experience” I don’t know why these expert critics don’t join up with a military or LE unit to impart their great wisdom ..
Another *great* video...quickly becoming my favorite channel if nothing else for the production quality! Good info, straight forward delivery...can't ask for much more than that.
Shooting a 20 inch 338 with inferior 250 grain bullets with a crappy BC proved you weren't using the right gear to shoot at distance. Not to mention your body position for LR shooting is garbage. And WTF kind of world class spotter says favor left/right edge? With a properly trued ballistic calculator and a world class "spotter" he should be calling out baseline windage in mils. And then calling out the change in mils as the wind changes before the shot. Oh and you didn't disprove any myths.
Interesting video. No suppressors here in The People's Republic of California, but that would be a nice add to my BarrettMRAD. Hitting out to 1,690 with 6.5. Creed. Really shocked the .338 didn't have those legs with that heavy bullet, but I don't shoot that caliber. Good Stuff Larry! Always happy to see distance shooting as a topic
+Random Task Virtually all of the disadvantages of a suppressor is gone from video games. Increased overall length makes it more difficult to maneuver in cqc, yet most games let you clear rooms with guns that are longer than pogo sticks with no issue at all. Harder cycling which wears parts faster, most games don't have weapon degradation Heat build up, temperature has no effect in games Cost most multiplayer games have you unlock attachments rather than buy them Increased weight and shifting the center of gravity of the gun, some games reflect this through handling statistics that affect recoil but otherwise it does nothing.
Thank you for this video. That was great shooting. Lucky to have a top-notch guy to help you home in on the limits of the firearm and ammunition. Subscribed.
+Shane Kennedy the implied myth was "one shot one kill" At really long ranges, things like temperature, wind at your locations and wind at the target not being the same direction and speed, the coriolis effect and spend drift and mirrage, make first round hits past 1200 yards VERY HARD and most shooters connect with the second shot after a correction. the worlds longest kill with a 338 lapua connected on the second shot
That AX 338 looks like a great weapon. I used an Accuracy international L96A1 back when I was a sniper in a infantry C.O.P unit (British army), menu year's ago. You are so lucky in the US (and other nations) where you can buy and use these weapons all the time. In the UK, if I have a baseball bat in the boot (trunk) of my car and I don't have a ball to go with it. I will be arrested for carrying a deadly weapon. Don't ever let the liberals take your gun rights from you.
Common misconception is that liberals want to take away guns. They want to keep nutjobs from buying guns and then going in and murdering a bunch of innocent people the next day. I own a half dozen guns and would own more if I had the money and the time to shoot. Don't allow biased media make you think that liberals don't own and want others to own guns. What we want is to keep those who are mentally unstable from being able to go in on Monday and buying a 2 assault rifles 10 clips and 500 rounds of ammo and Saturday throwing a all you can die party at the local nightclub. Finally you are allowed to own shotguns, machetes and other weapons in your home in the UK and I seriously doubt you would get arrested for having a bat in your car unless you told the cop that it was for self defense at which point you may or may not depends on the cop. Pretty simple to get around that though isn't there...keep a damn ball with your bat. Geez think outside the box a little.
@@Parents_of_Twins I couldn’t disagree more. There was I point when I would have agreed with you, but after watching the stunts that NY (of which I’m a resident) and CA have pulled in the last couple of years, there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that liberals most certainly do want to take away your guns - through legislation, through social media campaigns, and through financial arm-twisting/blackmail. On that last point, google NYS Comptroller Thomas J. DiNapoli’s action last year of sending letters to the nation’s largest lenders suggesting that they should consider no longer doing business with any facet of the gun industry (firearms manufacturers, ammunition manufacturers, vendors, and consumers). There was no purpose to that except to try to cripple the gun industry nationally. Then please tell us again that all they want to do is keep AR’s out to the hands of mentally unstable people.
@@Parents_of_Twins "Shall not be infringed". End of story. Nothing in life is safe. There is danger everywhere. I would much rather be able to defend myself and the one's I love to the best of my ability, than have some government entity tell me what I can or cannot use. Especially when that entity has her own armed security. BTW the UK is currently banning knives because there so many murders by stabbing. That just furthers the point that no matter what, people are going to hurt other people. Most of the shootings happened in places where people are distracted and more than that, disarmed already, i.e schools, bars, concerts, because mass shooters are cowards and want to minimize the risk. You make a place riskier to attack, you decrease the odds that someone is going to attack. Gun free zones don't work. That suppressor man I wish I could add that to my gun. Wow Larry awesome keep these long range vids coming. That was one of the most interesting things I have seen amazing love your channel.
One part I loved in the Marines was rifle qualification week. Everyone has to score at 500 yards with iron sights. On top of that every rifle I was issued must have had about 50,000 rounds fired through it. The boot camp rifle was the worst. It would fire again when I released the trigger. I never once ran an entire magazine without it jamming. Ahh, good times. I miss those days.
Yeah, 500. The front sight is the same size as the target at that range. Every Marine has to do that. I believe infantry has more stringent requirements. I was a simple fiber optic repairman.
Robert Marks thats crazy man, i didn't know they did that. i was kind of skeptical at first because 500 yards with iron sights seems crazy. but, i guess they make the targets 6x6' even so thats still a crazy shot. realistically probably not going to hit moving enemy combatant at 500 yards with iron sights, but hey i bet you would scare the crap out of them by just by hitting close to their position.
I guess from a technical standpoint it makes sense. A suppressor increased the length of the barrel, which holds back the gases even longer, building pressure. What happens inside the suppressor is the gasses being diverted around a few holes which drops the pressure infront and behind the bullet, muffling sound. That happens AT THE END of the barrel, therefor the increase in length is a plus. The supposed effect of pressure absorption is neglectable, because we previously INCREASED pressure through barrel length (0=0)....interesting findings.
oBseSsIoNPC Doesn't have a thing to do with physics, no part of a suppressor ever touches the bullet. Which proves my point even more, you don't know shit.
Ohh boy, here we go. Since when does there have to be ANY contact with the bullet, in order to restrict gas pressure inside of the barrel? BTW, this isn't the place to compare dicks.
He used supersonic (faster than speed of sound) ammunition in this video. Subsonic (slower than speed of sound) ammo is what makes some guns tolerable to operate with little to no ear protection.
+ElectricPyroclast It's got nothing to do with the bullet speed. I find 5.56mm fine without protection and that's supersonic. The noise level is determined by the size of the explosion behind the bullet and how far away the barrel end is.
+dom69foco Okay, you are more correct that I was, but I think there's a general but imperfect correlation between bullet velocity and energy of explosion.
i didn't hear any Coriolis Effect adjustments. Is this because they do not exist? I downloaded the Army sniper and artillery manuals and neither mentioned the effect. What gives?
No they do exist but, the range could be facing south and since the earth rotates that way it wont effect the shot, could be wrong but thats one possibility.
This is all entertaining, however I think it's meant to be. In the US Army a few years back I saw 2 Schmidt and Bender scopes fail new out of the box because of internal failures of their manual adjustment mechanisms. I have shot for years with the same glass and literally only manually adjusted when "I" changed loads. No holds barred, I shoot a US Optics with Horus Reticle and their premier glass.... I trust my life to these guys and they never disappoint.... V

There are many kinds of suppressors and low speed bullets to be used by those suppressors to prevent bullet reach speed of sound . Imo this is a special suppressor for sniper rifles that effetcs as an addonn barrel to 20' . It reacts as a 23' barrel and increases its effective range ..
And yet the Accuracy Intentional AW (predecessor to AX, using .338 has a proven accuracy (verified sniper kill confirmed by GPS) to 2475m (2707 yds) in Hot climates, So I guess your expertise isn't what you think it is. .
That was British sniper Craig Harrison. His rifle had a 27" barrel. Most AX338's come with the same barrel length. I can't understand why anyone would want a 20" barrel for long range shooting.
I was trying to see if he mentioned the barrel bore twist ratio. I understand that the most common standard for 24 inch barrels have either 1:10-1:12 twist ratio. Curious about 20 inch barrel and the12-14 inch suppressor what was the preferred ratio that they company used with that platform from MILE HIGH? It will have a significant impact on its performance.
when even i hear about long range kill/hit im always more impressed with the ability to find the dam target in the first place

Let's not forget that the spotter is a world class shooter, world champion as well. They are busting the myth of tiny groups at very long ranges. Rare and somewhat lucky.
For those of you who missed the myths he debunked, they were:
1. Shooting a sub-MOA group automatically means you have a sub-MOA rifle
2. A sub-MOA rifle is necessary for long range shooting
But if you insist on arguing with the decisions and statements of actual firearms experts across the world instead of ACTUALLY educating yourself, go for it 👍
@Charles Lindberg
No, no and no.
I didn't see any myths debunked. Anyone care to explain?
+GamePhysics I think it was about whether the suppressor reduced rifles effective range or not.
akumarisu But they never said that that was a myth and that they would test that.
***** Yupp. Bullshit video.
SERAPHlM No.. Common sense would dictate that it does increase velocity. The gas has more time to push the bullet.
this isn't a video, it's a 17 minute product placement commercial

You didn't really debunk any myths or even talk about any like at all lol.
Now I know!
7:29 he doesn't have to have a point when these tits can sell anything
Well I'm impressed. 20 inch 338 Lapua Mag reach 1500 yds at 1 moa. I think everyone is missing what spin and weather conditions do to a bullet at that range. Good video. Thanks
Silly me...I thought this video was going to be about long range shooting myths...
Myths which myths ? are you talking about ?
Not everyone who has the knowledge has the ability to pass it.

Screw the negative comments thanks for the video Larry. Great video I'm glad you guys showed that suppressors do boost velocity just adding to another factor in getting hits on target past 1,000
I find it very interesting how Larry was shooting Lefty with a right handed gun. Never removing his firing hand from the grip. Unusual technique.
thats how i roll with bolt action too :)
That's an awesome gun, but those shots were incredible. Most of us could take that same gun and not make those shots. People can laugh if they want, but when I hit a 12 inch target at 500 i'm happy.
+TexanUSMC8089 Makes me smile when i hit a pop can at 700 three times in a row.
Happy with a 12 inch plate at 500?? That's just plinking.
Chris Pellatt I was about to say with a lapua you can probably hit that even out past a grand reliably if you had a longer barrel.
I'd be happy to find a range past 200 yards within 100 miles of my house, too hilly and too many trees.
Why use a 20" barrel when shooting long range? Wouldn't a Palma rifle with a 30" barrel give you significantly higher speeds?
+vyshemirsky Just a 26" barrel would have given him 1 mile.
Exactly my thoughts.
Much respect from Ohio. Thanks for your service men.
What's with all the 20" barrels on 338 magnums? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a large caliber like that.
+James Okello Why would it? They are still hitting hard to 1400yards. Try that with .308win.
Short thick barrel vibrates less and is easier to transport. And keeps suppressed lenght to be operatable in field conditions.
But it loses a lot of velocity
So what? Sure bullet does drop more, but when shooting past 300 yards you need correct firing solution anyway.
Whats with the need for speed addiction.
That becomes an exponential factor as range extanges, why wouldn't you want every bit of speed to remain supersonic.
My regards Larry, you are a true Marksman, Cheers from Chile South America
Suppressors may give the bullet A LITTLE more velocity out of the barrel, but the main thing is that it calms the air outside of the muzzle and gives the bullet a cleaner exit it out of the rifle, so the bullet gets stabilized sooner and better than without a suppressor.
Kyle Teeter absolutely ridiculous.
Kyle Teeter sure bro, you learn that playing call of duty?
Maybe there is a little more pressure left behind the bullet.
Because a can traps all the turbulent air behind the projectile as it exits, unlike a brake that creates turbulent air, and especially a barrel with no muzzle device that shoots air and gases out in the same direction as the bullet and in front of the bullet. The velocity you gain isn't really enough to matter.
Outstanding advice on MOA accuracy and expectation management; gold.

Debunking these myths should hopefully help my shooting, thanks Vickers Tactical! :)
Because,
If You are long range sniper in the enemy zone, looking for your target for days, suddenly you see him a mile away, you need to shoot him before he disappears for you don’t know how long again, no time for adjusting your gun with target by shooting around it,
---- what do you do in that case ?
Why a long range cartridge like the 338 Lapua Magnum and use a short barrel ? Thats like putting snow tires on a dragster.
you only lose about 300 fps.
John Doe Still, why deal with the recoil if you're not going to fully utilize the cartridge? There are other rounds that'll hit at that distance without killing your shoulder, and they cost less too.
FishyMacaroon6:
1. L. Vickers is a has-been with loads of funding and sponsors, so cost isn't really a factor for him as it pertains to shooting.
2. As for recoil, it isn't nearly as bad as you'd think. Muzzle brakes go a long way toward mitigating recoil.
The rifle is designed for tactical use.
That thing will still punch hard plates at 1k keeping 1moa.

Fellow ohio native here. Its nice seeing our little state getting mentioned
I like Gunsite!!! Went there 2 years back and learned a lot.. i appreciate everything they taught me and i hope to one day return.
What's the point of a 20" 338 Lapua??
I don't get it either. What muzzle velocities do you get with that?
it can hit a grand...whats wrong with that?
Fj4LiFe23 If you hit steel or paper it's cool I guess but you're losing precious fps for damage.
What are you hunting at 1000+ yards? Anything closer still has plenty of energy left.
What i have said all along adding a suppressor to a gun will give it some extra range capability, because you are in theory adding length.
+Rikki Wells adding a suppressor adds VERY VERY LITTLE velocity and is actually more of a Myth
+Big6Duke There is nothing mythical about freebore boost. It's real, it happens plenty of data to back it up. My case in particular was 32fps with a Thunderbeast 30P-1 with a 6.5x47Lapua.
I'm guessing you've never seen a suppressor. It's not an extension of the barrel.
Hey larry I temporarily reside in Singapore and I saw you on documentary channel and you were talking about the legion and the famas and I thought it was pretty cool to see you on TV :)
Really wanted to see the 50 bmg in action
if you think about it, a suppressor should increase range and accuracy.
1: the extended barrel length means that the bullet receives more 'correction' before exiting the barrel
2: by the extended time inside the barrel, the gasses has a longer time to propel the bullet = greater velocity and inertia = range
though I dont understand how the suppressor affects muzzle flash yet can someone explain the interior design of a suppressor
PerciusLive wrong
You should try and recreate the Carlos Hathcok 1mile kill with a M2 BMG
Matthew Arenson today you’d have to use the Barrett.
The bullet doesn't tumble when going back from supersonic THAT is a myth
it just travels slower making the drop more every yard/meter and more influenced by environment.
Forgot to mention where you bought your socks from Larry
This whole video seemed like one big ad, great for me because I use adblock.
Learned a valuable thing, when a supersonic gun's round goes below the sound barrier, that distance is really the end of it's effective range. Didn't know that, makes perfect sense though.
So the myths are?
It´s a prank bro!
That suppressors decrease velocity.

I want to see a redo with Todd Hodnett + Bryan Litz ballistic calculator with the rifle trued at 1300
+kramotakra I would love for Todd Hodnett to come on here and school all the folks who refuse to change with the times and new training techniques. There is a reason why he is the foremost expert on long distance and all of his .308's and .338 LPM's bolt guns are barreled at 20 inches (granted they are all Bartlein like mine).
+Patrick Miller Yep, short and thick better than long and hanging LOL
Nah, Todd won't have the time.... he can make people feel extremely inferior though "long range is easy, just apply the fundamentals" Reminds me of the bullseye masters who explain how they do it "pick up gun, squeeze trigger, put gun down." Well, I apply fundamentals all day long and not shooting as well as Todd!
Rounds going trans-sonic is a real ball- breaker.

Excellent representation of the physics involved in long range shooting! 👍👍👍👍

Really shocked the .338 didn't have those legs with that heavy bullet, but I don't shoot that caliber. Good Stuff Larry! Always happy to see distance shooting as a topic
games make suppressors have a penalty otherwise everyone would use them making the game worse
+Random Task
Adding suppressors to different guns can have different effects.
+Random Task Virtually all of the disadvantages of a suppressor is gone from video games.
Increased overall length makes it more difficult to maneuver in cqc, yet most games let you clear rooms with guns that are longer than pogo sticks with no issue at all.
Harder cycling which wears parts faster, most games don't have weapon degradation
Heat build up, temperature has no effect in games
Cost most multiplayer games have you unlock attachments rather than buy them
Increased weight and shifting the center of gravity of the gun, some games reflect this through handling statistics that affect recoil but otherwise it does nothing.
+Michael Nguyen The harder cycling, is that because of the higher pressure because the bullet takes longer to clear the barrel?
+Michael Nguyen I guess you're an expert on game development
+Michael Nguyen The only game I know that has heat effects is Red Orchestra, since you can destroy the barrel on a mg42 by firing too long
Thank you for this video. That was great shooting. Lucky to have a top-notch guy to help you home in on the limits of the firearm and ammunition.

where's the myths? just saw shooting and product plugs

@@Parents_of_Twins You are a good Liberal, you are not in power. Nancy Pelosi is not a good Liberal and she is in power.

Very little talk about any facts,, no mentioning about The corriolis effect bs either, or did i miss something? Didnt watch all this crap tbh
You're doing God's work Larry.
unfortunately i could never afford to buy one of these rifles. fortunately i would never need one these rifles. i never made a shot past 300 yards.
Robert Marks 500 yards?
with iron sights?
+oBseSsIoNPC "A suppressor increased the length of the barrel" Learn what a suppressor is.
"learn what a suppressor is" -learn what physics is
oBseSsIoNPC
Doesn't have a thing to do with physics, no part of a suppressor ever touches the bullet. Which proves my point even more, you don't know shit.
Ohh boy, here we go. Since when does there have to be ANY contact with the bullet, in order to restrict gas pressure inside of the barrel? BTW, this isn't the place to compare dicks.

albi131 It is when you don't give a shit about your hearing anymore lol
+albi131 I've been next to one before.....It's pretty damn loud still. Hearing protection is still a must.
+dom69foco Okay, you are more correct that I was, but I think there's a general but imperfect correlation between bullet velocity and energy of explosion.
man u need 60 fps cameras , ur videos are enjoyable
i didn't hear any Coriolis Effect adjustments. Is this because they do not exist? I downloaded the Army sniper and artillery manuals and neither mentioned the effect. What gives?
No they do exist but, the range could be facing south and since the earth rotates that way it wont effect the shot, could be wrong but thats one possibility.
i just want to see "Coriolis Effect" in ANY official Army pub.
+Nick Veritas yeah i know what you mean, you'd think they would at least explain it, does seem quite strange.
i downloaded the Army Sniper Manual and the Army Artillery Officer Manual and there is no mention of the Coriolis Effect in either... strange.
The coriolis effect is the least important factor in long range shooting.

Great video. Growing up in Indiana and shooting Groundhogs, I can relate! :-) However, the most accurate rifle I have shot (and this was a long time ago) was a Styr with a Shepherd Scope. Very accurate. :-)
Thanks for the video. Very good info
wow its a lot of people talking shit with no videos or military/police/contractor careers lets see the video if your so much better whats that¿? your only a keyboard warrior and all your groups come from call of duty oh what i thought seriously get a life kids. larry fellow vet and long time sub awesome video from start to finish. i just got a SCAR 17S cant wait to see what it can do and yes your SCAR video is to blame why im out of 3k keep it up brother
+CombatVet88 Well Said. A gun can only do so much, it takes a serious shooter to hit at 1500. lay down with a bipod and give it a try. LOL
real shit, i love how these kids are so judgmental its unreal. what this man did was no game he really put it all on the line, can't stand by and let them belittle him like that.
Dude, it's TH-cam. If these people could, they'd be training instead of WATCHING people do cool shit and commenting
In fact I just found a video on here about a Canadian sniper with a confirmed kill at 2.14 miles. So these guys aren't exactly experts.
@@philcoleman4086 1. Thats the record not a daily occurance
2. They used a 50 cal
3. They have a way longer barrel
It will have a significant impact on its performance.
this is nothing but a commercial.
Mr Vickers... with all due respect you done some great shooting out there you made a 20 inch gun run great at that distance
good to see a south paw shooting as a pro.
lot of obstacles to overcome!
