  • Great 56 mile ride from the Brook n Woods campground to Poughkeepsie NY. Miles of beautiful Rail Trails. Highlight was the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and The Walkway Over the Hudson. I'm calling this ride from the Canadian Border to New York City, the No Excuses Tour since we find it easy to make excuses not to be as active as we once were. We can be the best we can be with the right attitude.
    As I ride this tour, I remember Casey Neistat's friend Quentin Kenihan who despite severe limitations had no excuses and always aspired to be the best he could be. May he rest in peace.

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Werner, thanks again. The pinion gearbox is bombproof with no chain to deal with it's great. It's a heavy bike (35 lbs) but with the lower gears it does just fine. Not a bike that I would like to ride with friends on road bikes for a long distance. A bit slower due to the 2.25" tires with 45 psi max. But great for bike packing and off road use. For extended road riding I still like my Jamis gravel bike with 40mm tires at 55 psi. Riding the 600x solo on the road is just about perfect as long as you're not trying to keep up with a bike with harder tires. Love the 600x

    Just tripped across your channel the other day. Peaked my interest because you were on the Empire State Trail. We live in Elizabethtown NY and bike by the waterfalls many times in the summer you passed on day 1 and 2. Got a kick out of seeing the shot you had of the Boquet River in Wadhams as you passed by. Perhaps you were lucky enough have the Dogwood Bread Company there open and were able to stop. I will watch the end of your trip, but wanted to ask your opinion on doing this trip in reverse - NYC to Canada?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom and thanks for watching and the nice comment. You live in a beautiful part of New York! I think either direction on the trail would be nice. However, I don't recommend the first 135 miles from Canada south unless a person is a very experienced "road" rider comfortable riding in traffic with minimal road shoulders. It's a dangerous part of the trail and I wouldn't ride it again. Otherwise a great trip. Thanks again and all the best, Steve

    Wonderful video Steve. I read thru the comments and you suggest not doing the first 135 miles from Canada. Great information!! Wonderful video, glad you love your bike. The bike trail looks like mostly packed bluestone or paved. Any single track?? Thanks - Barb

I think I've done well with setup based on Infinity's instructions, but it would be great to hear from a rider like yourself who has used it a lot. Thanks for considering! • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ride 50% on/off road. Can't give an opinion on the 600. My gut feel is that the 600 would perform fine off road with 2" + tires. There always a trade off. Larger tires run lower pressure, therefore more resistance on the road. Thanks, Steve

      I'm not Steve, but I have ridden my 600 on many rail trails, gravel and paved and it has been fine. I don't think it would be as comfortable on a technical singletrack as the 600X. I would venture to say the 600X is overkill for the trails Steve is riding and the 600 would have been better. But Steve would have to address that opinion.

    Hey Steve - great video. I just decided to cancel my cycling journey through Quebec this summer due to the smoke forecast. I now plan on doing a simple loop… leave Brewster on the Empire Trail - north, cut over into Vermont to visit sister near Middlebury, jump over the Green Mountains, and follow the Connecticut River and various trail systems south back to Connecticut.
    Sorry… a long way of asking a simple question. Does one need to make arrangement to stay at a lock or just show up?

    I just learned something new from watching your videos. I was under the impression that the Empire State Trail was one continuous trail end to end. But, it's actually a series of interconnected trails. Which is still cool. Are the trails mapped via GPS? How many miles of the route is on roads?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there and thanks for watching! The first 135 miles are 95% on road and I don't recommend that section for any but the most experienced road rider. A lot of areas with minimal shoulder. And you are correct, a series of interconnected trails after that. The Empire State Trail association has a book for sale that maps the entire trail along with points of interest, motels, campgrounds, etc. It was a great ride after the first 135 miles.
